Happy birthday, Frederic! In another century you'll be just about ready to retire.
"Some person in authority-"
"Who?"
"...I don't know who. Very likely the astronomer royal!"
That's my favorite line
Happy birthday, Frederic! In another century you'll be just about ready for retirement.
3:23. Kevin Kline never got his due as a physical comedian--the casual perching on one leg is brilliant.
He's great throughout the entire production.
The man has legs of rubber, and it's so much fun to watch--those lunges during "With Catlike Tread" are unbelievable. XD
I watch this every 4 years today!
A pair of ducks, a pair a ducks, a most ingenuous pair of ducks, ha ha ha ha ha ha, this pair of ducks!
I love the song "For the Pirates's Lair" I love the trumpets that play at the beginning of the song, and Rex Smith's voice, I love how it warbles, especially on the line "And so....I will be merciful" That brings me a thrill each and every time.
I also love the song "Paradox" love how the harpiscope is played in that song!
Kevin Kline you rock my world! Best all around comedian, dramatist, and dancer, since Mr Jack Lemmon!
‘If wasn’t for us you’d all be German’ Best line from fish called Wanda! Love your talent!
Kevin's a bass, and this is the only time we ever get to hear it in this!
Kevin makes this entire movie. I watched this over and over growing up!
I find it hilarious that he rips the map but carries on.
I was in this opera and we use to say "a pair of socks a pair of socks a stinky stinky pair of socks" lol
I have had this song stuck in my head all day.
Kevin Kline cracks me up every time I watch this movie.
Best song in the whole movie! The costumes... the lyrics... the acting... :D
Who’s watching this on Frederic’s birthday in 2020?
YES! My friend and I watch this every leap year. :D It must be done.
Love it! I missed it this year, but there's always 2024.
I did. Then played it again for a friend.
I'm here in 2024!
I'm too late now it's June 2024 I have to wait till 2028 now to watch it again
I aspire to be Kevin Kline. I've aspired to be Kevin Kline literally my entire life. The Road To El Dorado was one of the first movies I ever fell in love with and Tulio has always been my favorite character.
You can watch the show over & over there are always many little momments to savor.
This is the best version of PP ever made!! As a little kid I loved this musical and still do!
its the 1983 movie version with kevin kline, rex smith, and angela landsbury
omg Kevin kline always cracks me up in this movie. :)
(Computations as of Feb 29, 2016). If my math is correct, Gilbert and Sullivan's "Pirates of Penzance" takes place on March 1, 1877, 21 years after Frederic was born (Feb 29, 1856). Frederick's 21st Birthday would have been Feb 29, 1940 when he'd lived 84 years. Therefore, on February 29, 2016 Frederick would have been born 160 years ago, and today would be his 39th birthday. NOT his 40th birthday, because there IS a Leap Day in century years evenly divisible by 400, meaning 2000 (aka Y2K) WAS a Leap Year and did have a February 29th! Happy 39th Birthday Frederic!
+Chris Novak
Sorry Chris, but you're off by one. Since Frederic's life spans 1900, there's one less leapday. Assuming that he knew about the calendar oddities and correctly calculated his one and twentieth birthday to be on February 29th, 1940, then he had to be born in 1852, not 1856. So today would be his 40th birthday and he would have been born 164 years ago.
Why do we even know this stuff? :-)
Which one am I off by? 1900 was not a Leap Year, but 2000 (Y2K) was. I'd rather believe Gilbert made a math error about 1900 and Frederic would have been 21 (age 88) in 1944. Of course, if 1940 was correct, 1852 would also be correct. But I'll stick with February 29, 1856 as his birthday, because the entire action in Pirates of Penzance takes place on March 1, 1877 -- Frederic's 21st year. Why is the timing of THIS important? Gilbert apparently had some experience/inspiration with Leap Day births.....and THEN wrote Pirates of Penzance. Penzance's official premiere was at the Fifth Avenue Theatre in New York City on 31 December 1879 -- 2.5 years later. And I'm interested in this stuff because I just LOVE Pirates of Penzance!
In either case, the poor aged lad would be ending his indentures during WWII.
Chris Novak Cool! I love that idea!
That's surprising. Most middle school (or high school) students aren't really trained to hit the high notes that Mabel or Frederic sing.
Hope it goes well!
I am So in love with this movie, did you post more of this? I literally killed my tape when I was twelve by watching it six times in a row, the tape ate itself. My father drove all over to get me a new one :) Im going to get it converted to dvd soon!
SOoo much respect for Gilbert and Sullivan. My great grandmother played Mabel along time ago, I did in theater camp :)
Thank you so much!! The subtitles are heaven!!
I love this song.
I turn five tomorrow!!
Happy Birthday :D
I wish I had Kevin Kline's skill of sitting. :D
My school did this musical this year and every once in a while I get this song stuck in my head. I have too many theater friends xD
I am so stoked to perform this!!!!
Angela Lansbury is amazing :D I love the movies she's in
@skatinanwaitin Practice.
And a very good sense of balance.
Gilbert and Sullivan - the two Kings of rapid three-part harmonies
I tried sitting like Kevin Kline did... fell over though. XD
Angela looks so smart in her pirate outfit.
Happy birthday, Fredrick!! :)
Listening to this on February 29th.
yes Angela Lansbury was the original Mrs. Lovette and Mrs. potts! she's amazing!
Lol, the way Kevin Kline says "paradox" at 2:07, he sounds like he's using a different accent.
@hobyboy07 it comes after the so it really doesnt matter song. when he goes "oh horror".
I love that definition.
Here I am in honor of Leap Day, 2020. :) Pirates of Penzance never gets any less funny.
1:06 no one else but Kline could make mumbles hilarious
I'm a newcomer to Gilbert and Sullivan and I can already tell most of their stuff is poking fun at British society's ability to get into and out of trouble via twisted interpretations of vague rules.
Preach.
They cut it off before it got to the part about his indenture contract.
Still a great song, though.
Hey it's a leap year this year, I'm going to sing all day long this song or at least till I'm kicked out of the house.
this is such a fun song! my school is putting this on and tomorrow is opening night!
I love their outfits.
@WokenWildly Its on DVD! Was FINALLY released 9/14/10! Is definitely on my list.
Most people my age watched Tom and Jerry or spongebob for their childhood.
I watched this
If there was an official DVD, I know many people including me would have got it.
There WAS! I have it! It exists!
I do not think I ought to listen to you lol great line!
My Favorite Angela Lansbury role!
@sumplais I remember reading somewhere that Gilbert miscalculated because 1900 didn't have one either. So he should have been 21 in 1944. Of course it still all depends on when it actually takes place.
I agree. It may sound weird but it also make you Hear it better.
At your MIDDLE school?!
Wow. That's something I'd come out of retirement to see.
I always love the beginning:
For some ri-Diculous reason....
my middle school is putting this show on and im in it i am the very model of a modern- major general ( this means i play him) :)
omg this is my fav part of the entire operetta.
Angela Landsbury AAAAAAND KEVIN KLINE?!
EPIC WIN!!!!!!!!!!!
Happy birthday Fredrick!!!
3:24 - epic balance right there lol
Glad you like them. Not many people do.
Happy Birthday Fredrick
You can get the Broadway version, which has Kevin Kline, Linda Ronstadt, and Rex Smith. But I'll be honest, even though its a legitimate release from a studio, the sound and picture quality isn't very good.
A most ingeious parodox
@xrockstarx985 Yes,and her name is Angela Lansbury.
Happy birthday Fredric!
I got the role of Ruth in my school production of this :))
Awesome! I'm Samual, our show is in a few weeks!
I'm Fredric
I'm the pirate King
Yeah I liked that. It was giggle-tastic.
So Frederick just celebrated his birthday, which means it should be winter. In England.
England has weird weather. It hails in the summer
@ProdigyStepper A puzzle sort of thing like when you look at it, it looks like something, then when you turn it, it's completely different
If I've calculated correctly...Fredrick should be 38 today. ("in 1940 I of age shall be" (21)) 14 leapyears since then to year 2000 and 3 after (2000 didn't have one)
A never-too-late remark: 2000 was a leap year. It is divisible by 400.
@@thomasw.eggers4303 NOW you tell me. So, I guess he was 39 back in 2012 which make him (2021) 41 "and a little bit over." See you in 2024.
They have a "junior" version of the show with the songs shortened and in different keys. Also many songs are completely taken out and made into lines.
i am putting this play on
not exactly. a musical is a play with songs, and operetta is an opera with speaking parts, basically. if they sing more than they talk its an operetta. think of it as "opera lite"
3:24 How does he do that?!
Don't quote me on it...but I think some kind of mausoleum where the Major General's ancestors are buried. He points toward the area when he says "heaven help me, I am no orphan."
It's an opereetta. A musical and operetta are different.
Who else is watching this on Leap Day?
I love Angela. Mrs Lovett anyone?
Huh, I didn't know they had techno in the 1880s. ;)
I tried to sit like Kevin Kline. Ow.
Reversity To be fair, Kevin Kline can't sit like that anymore either 😋
Yeah, was a good Mrs Lovett.
Aww, Tomaswolstenholme makes me sad through his hatred.
I'm Ruth in my school play!
2:01 Love it hahaha
Teacher: Do your homework! Me: I do not think I ought to listen to you!
Teacher: And who defeated the moops? Me: I don't know who....
Me in school this week!
Has anyone noticed that at around 4:00 Fredric goes cockney?
it really doesnt matter
I don't think you can buy it on DVD yet.
In Gothard, we pronounce dragon as dgradian.
has this version ever been released on DVD?
Is there a CD of this? If so I am having trouble finding it on amazon.
@xrockstarx985 Yes indeed she was.
Happy Lead Day Folks
I got Eidith in my school play. :)))
So hard to beliece Frederic played Chauvelin!!!
Still, damn hard show for a high school to do, let alone a middle school.
Is your school abridging it at all? Or transposing some of the parts?
How come these video's are no longer available??
