Fun fact about this video that most people don't know. If you turn your volume all the way up, and listen very closely, you can just barely hear a group of pirates singing.

You mean a group of Policemen?

    • @bgeniij
      @bgeniij Před 3 lety +107

@@Coldstreamer17 No, there is actually a group of singing pirates sneaking towards the Major-General's household as the police are chanting. The pirates can be heard singing, but it's rather faint and could easily be mistaken for the sighing of the breeze, which is why it usually requires listening at high volumes to hear properly.
Sometimes you can even see the pirates, although this is much harder than listening for them due to their almost preternatural stealth. There are some general tips for spotting them though. Try looking out for the distinct forward lunges often used by pirates when moving stealthily. This is often accompanied by foot stomping, mock sword swings, and rousing musical choruses sung as loudly as possible.

DM: Police, make a stealth check.
Police: Dammit! 9! They’ll see us so easily.
    DM: Haha, probably.
Pirate King: Yeah, I’m totally rolling a perception check (rolls) YOURE KIDDING ME! I got a 6!
DM: Oddly enough you enter the Major Generals garden completely missing the policemen that are hiding behind twigs! Now, Pirate King, I’ll get you to roll a stealth check for the group.
Ruth the Bard: I give bardic inspiration! (Rolls) Yeah! 10 on a d10! We’ll be so good!
Pirate King: Awesome! (Rolls) Nat 1!
Frederick: Can I roll too since technically I’m assisting him?
    DM: *sigh* fine.
Frederick: (rolls) NAT 1?! ARE YOU SERIOUS?
Ruth: Uhhh that’s plus 10 with inspiration!
DM: A Nat 1 is a Nat 1, sorry. I’ll say you hum a song about how important stealth is, and as the pirates sneak in they just thought it was such a good song that they start singing along as loud as they can with fantastic choreography! Everyone’s basically shouting about how quiet you all need to be.
Frederick: We really ballsed this up! We’re so screwed!
DM: This obviously wakes up the Major General...so he walks out to his garden and does a perception check and... (Rolls) WHa-? He...gets a Nat 1.
Pirates: *confused but happy noises of disbelief*

I'm 80, and I bet in my life time I have played this movie 1000 times. I played it because it's the best presentation of the Gilbert & Sullivan operetta ever, mainly because of Kevin Kline's amazing performance, and moves, where did he get those moves. My kids played it, in particular this song, over and over as they grew. The epitome of what the Pirate King should be,, Thank you Kevin for this amazing performance. And he did it many times on Broadway. Keystone Cop leader is also terrific

I know I'm 5 years too late to address this, but...why on earth would you change Samuel to an actual girl instead of just crosscasting and having the girl play a boy? If nothing else, it completely messes up the storyline with Frederick and Ruth (and Mabel). Literally the whole point of the "Frederick-Ruth-Mabel" thing is that Frederick's never seen another woman except Ruth since he was 8 years old, until he sees the Major-General's daughters. I went to a school where we constantly had more girls than boys in the shows we did, and we just crosscast the girls so they'd play boys. In Oliver we had a girl playing the Artful Dodger, in Joseph most of the brothers were played by girls, in Wizard of Oz the Cowardly Lion was a girl too, and in Les Mis we had girls playing sailors and soldiers and fighters on the barricade.
