    At 0:02 you can see a puff of black smoke come out the back of the engine and also hear a loud pop soon after from the engine. If you have any questions, read the description above or you are welcome to ask!

      I have to disagree. There's no deflagration and flame shoot thru the compressor section. And I've seen my share of compressor stalls. The 'pop' seems to indicate a stall, but I think it may have been a bird strike with a minor rollback, so if there was a stall, it was only partial. Have a great story about backing a 727 off the overrun at BGR at dusk, '82 or '83. Best fireworks show, ever, for the spectators, with the stall flames coming out to abeam the wing root, ~25 ft. And we avoided the CNN stringer crew. That was the cherry on the cake. (atr-17k hrs)
      I could always be wrong. The P&W JT8D was prone to stalls on some series (-15s). This -90, unless it was one of their ER versions, had International Aero V2500s. Maybe they cough differently.
      ATL, eh? I lived in Fayetteville for 10 years. Guess which airline.

    Always liked the MD90 so long and sleek looking engines all the way back wings are clean no engine hanging off.

    I agree that it looks more like brake dust. An engine surge is a pretty noisy event with visible flame.

    That looked more like brake dust when they hit the brakes after rotation. otherwise you would have heard a bang or successive bangs.

    So can the engine be restarted after a compressor stall or is it damaged?

    • @MrParamedics
      @MrParamedics Před 6 lety +6

      pcsc1097 The engine is working throughout the stall, so when the stall is over, thrust comes back instantly.

      James Teagardenj At 0:02 you can see a puff of smoke and hear a loud pop. The plane isn’t stalling but there was a small explosion inside one of the engines. It’s call a compressor stall.

    No issue if one engine failure as both engine is on the Tail. Slight compensation needed to travel straight unlike 737 or A320 where engine is far away from centre line. One engine will yaw the aircaft terrible. Main issue of MD90 is the noisy jet engine for seating closer to engine.

    So when the compressor stalls, how do they get it going again? It appeared to climb with ease

    • @flcd_
      @flcd_ Před rokem

      Compressor doesn't necessarily mean the engine shuts off. It can be a short drop in power before the airflow normalizes again.

    • @chris22capt
      @chris22capt Před 7 měsíci

      The procedure usually to reduce or even completely close the thrust lever to idle and see if the compressor out of stall condition. If the stall condition is over, the thrust can be increased again. If not, the engine should be shut down to prevent damage to the engine and then going back to the airport for checking.
