Samsung Q990c Soundbar Firmware Update Part 3

- Updating any electronic's firmware can be unnerving since one false move may brick the electronic equipment. Unfortunately the Samsung references to updating soundbars are either out-dated (not pertaining to your model) or incomplete in the steps needed.
This video is done on one take in real time. This is my first attempt in updating and it came out fine. Worrisome was the 4 display freezing and the 3 reboots. Initially when the display froze, it looks as if something went wrong, but this turned out to be part of the process. If it takes longer than 7 minutes and you have not seen "latest version" display, something went wrong. I would stop the update, reformat the jump drive or better yet use a different jump drive, repeat the download process and start the update again. Probably had a corrupt file downloading from Samsung.
Total time took 4minutes 17 seconds. Everyone time may vary as around 6 minutes have been mentioned. It depends on internet connection speeds, traffic at the Samsung download website, type of flash drive, etc.

I did the update on last night and the improvements are really noticeable. Specially on q-symphony, separations, mids and bass.

This video was filmed live and I did not know what to expect. Other resources merely provided written instructions by Samsung or links; often which led to incomplete steps or are for older models. Lucky for me it went through in one shot so I uploaded the step by step video to help others and also provide some sort of hand holding. Glad it worked out.
Thanks, I just updated with mine i didnt think to check the website for USB updates since the APP wasnt showing any updates . Really helped clean things up for me. I really like the sound improvements, was worth it.

Worth mention that on an apple computer, the default USB format is NOT FAT32 and needs changing to that. Other formats including the default apple one, will not work.
So you can use an Apple computer then? Are there specific directions on how to do that?
@@noahsteinberg6227 apparently when formatting the drive (right click on drive) you have to manually direct to format as FAT32.
firmware update unfortunately won't raise the power of the speakers as they are reliant on the max power budget of the amplifier in each speaker box. what they improved with that patch is the connection stability to smartthings app, as it would lose connection or went offline time to time and some had to factory reset to re-connect. no other changes

If the sound didn't increase or get better why update it. If it already sounds good and your getting great sound. My advice just leave it.
My soundbar (q700c) is continuously auto restarting for every 2mins with “wifi disconnected” scrolling. I’m updating the firmware to 1004 using USB and it’s been 1 hour and the update is still going on 🤞
Looks like you have wifi issues; whether weak signal or interference. With your wifi disconnecting, it will not be able to update as the file download is not small. I will check your internet speed at the soundbar. If that is not the issue, you may have a defective wifi module.

Is there any significant improvement with this firmware update... Why taking risk while we can wait and update when it comes through app?!
Depends on your current performance but I successfully did the update which raised the volume of the rears 100% and fixed a mic issue I was having that meant Spacefit was not working. Also seemed to resolves a default input selection issue I had where it was going to ‘d.in’ despite no optical cable being present.
In short, don’t fix it if it ain’t broke, but mine really felt broke (and was) out of the box.
@@tomrochester7381 bought it last week... I get Spacefit option only not Spacefit pro... They advertise like this is the major difference between previous version B. In app the option shows as Spacefit not Spacefit pro.... And the app is also. Very laggy it reconnecting with bar every time if u want to make adjustments... I also feel there is not a much difference when I on spacefit ... And randomly I get a sound which is like a warning with the led signal ( only lower horizontal line lit) that time the sound drops down completely and then picks up suddenly.... Which is really annoying...
Samsung does not document what any firmware update does. Per Samsung, fixes minor bugs and improvements . I did not have any issues before so I did not really notice any improvements; not to say there weren't any. There could have been firmware and software tweaks that are more operational in nature.

Why after the update my Q800C does not have anymore the SYNC option, anyone else with the same issue?
Samsung been doing this for years. Says update is avaialable then you are not able to do it thru smarthings. Why do they make it so complicated?
Updating software is one thing, updating firmware is another. Firmware update failure can brick the soundbar; much like bios updating a computer. I can see why Samsung took out the automatic update as someone should be present during the firmware update. I think Samsung realizes that there are a fair amount of owners out there with sketchy wifi connections--as evidenced by people still complaining about audio drops and soundbar losing signal to tv. If the wifi should cut out during the firmware updating, this could end up being disasterous. There is no ethernet connection so usb only. So manual updating is the safest route.

Don't you have the "Channel" button on your remote control to select each speaker and increase the volume seperately? Got it from the manuals
Like I said, much more easier through the app. Can also see all of the channel levels at the same time.
Very strange the update didn't change the back surround level at all....
I had no change either, but the rear speakers are very close to my seating position so volume was not an issue with me.

@@michael-4k4000 A lot of people notice more rear channel output. The firmware update mayhave changed the input sensitivity of the rear amp pre-amp section so in essense allows the rear speaker amp to overdrive. Or remember if you set the center channel level below baseline, this in effect raises the other surround channel levels so the update may have tweaked the base line levels. Or the update changed the algorithim of the Sound Fit. In our case, we had our rear speakers close so the changes did not affect us in comparison to someone who has the rear speakers further away.

I think they did this so people would not plug their devices into it. Updating is infrequent so not much of an inconvenience.
I have the HW Q600A . My Dolby went out in the ARC. I tried new cable and did the USB firmware update. But it plays for a bit and out it goes. Bar isn't even 3 years old. Im irritated.
You should have just left it don't change what already works good. Like your sound bar.
@nmaitraiya1234 it was going out before the Firmware update. That's why I did the update to see if it would remedy the situation. But it didnt.
Folks quick question:
Does the Q900c support Wireless Dolby Atmos with Samsung 6 Series smart TVs? I am confused. How can I check that? I feel no difference in playing audio from CZcams vs Netflix.
Unfortunately, eARC won't support my TV (strangely) and hoping this 1004 update fixes it.

The soundbar does not care what your TV is, as long as it has ARC or eARC connection. Make sure your TV audio/digital out is set up correctly for the soundbar.

@@navjotsingh3888 Just make sure that eARC is turned on in the tv settings and that the hdmi pass thru is on in the tv settings. DD+ should be on as its the codec used for atmos.

I'm doing exactly the same steps, everything the same and the q990c doesn't recognize the usb as it says D.IN, tired many times over and over again, nothing, also the SmartThings said No available updates" while i'm at 1002 ver. WEL DONE Samsung, Great LAME SUPPORT.
How long have you left the stick in the soundbar as it does stall out at d.in. You may have to reformat the jump drive and redownload the firmware as the file may have been corrupt or use another jump drive and start from fresh. An older jump drive may have internal issues that conflict with the firmware files. Samsung may have disabled the auto update because if power goes out during the update and nobody is around it could brick the soundbar or the 1004 may have fixed this issue; no way to know until another update becomes available. Samsung does not publish what the firmware updates do.

I have the same problem. The update did not start. I tried two flash drives and still the same problem. Any idea?
Try power cycle. Remove all wiring from soundbar. Disconnect power to rear speakers and sub. Insert usb stick. Connect power to soundbar only@@MrSrujan007

For me I had to turn on the soundbar on for the sub to actually start working
Where to get this atmos sample video...
Apple TV, bluray disc with dolby atmos. Most of the other streaming services are dolby digital plus that is upconverted to synthtized dolby atmos (which is excellent with the Samsung soundbar).
Can you show us your current soundbar settings after the update?
My settings will be of little use as each room is configured differently. My settings will not be the same as for you. Also, throw into the mix Sound Fit which adjust the speakers to each individual room further differentiate my settings than what would be best for yours. Best to use a movie like JOLT which uses a lot of surround effects, make your adjustments to your liking. If your rear surround settings are still too low or too high even after adjusting the channel levels, you can decrease the center level which will raise the surround levels and visa versa. Don't forget the equalizer setting. In the surround modes, you can only adjust bass and treble. Play with these settings to bring out clarity but be careful as small adjustments have big consequences.

Hi, I M Amir From PAKISTAN. I Buy Samsung Q990C soundbar just 2 months ago. Last time on the soundbar and sho the msg on bar screan UPD and soundbar is off and just 1 orange Light is on and no any working. I m verry worried about the soundbar. I m going to 3 difrent sights Samsung service centers. Samsung enginears said me this soundbar is imported Item and we are no resolve this problem sorry. 1 enginrear said to me maybi main board ic damege butt this main board is not repairable. I m verry worried. Samsung is best brand butt this soundbar is verry expensive and Quality i think verry low. What i do. Any person pls help me. Or Samsung help me. I trust samsung brand butt this is not fear. In PAKISTAN Samsung service centers and helpline not any help mo just sai to me SORRY. What about Sorry. If not resolve this problem close the all Samsung srevice centers in PAKISTAN. Why open the Brand name Samsung service center in PAKISTAN.

One big issue I have .. the sound bar keeps disappearing from the smart things app. I have to keep setting it up again and again.

amazing video... followed every step, rears are solid blue but the subwoofer is flashing blue and red and when i try to re connect it goes solid blue for a second tghen starts flashing blue and red again?? plz help[
Use this link to manually reset the sub to the soundbar. czcams.com/video/0cKx7cO1NWM/video.html Make sure you do not have something interfering with the sub wifi signal, move it somewhere else. Have you solved the problem. Usually both blue and red flashing is not a good sign.

How can I update it with no usb ? I didn't have one in the box ?
At this time, have to use a usb stick in order to do the update. Look around your house, chances are you have one lying around. If not, go to Amazon, Ebay, Best Buy, Dollar Store and purchase the least expensive jump drive with at least 2GB. Should be under $5.

I had the same impression, what I did was disable voice enhancement in the advanced sound settings, the bass became more evident.
@@juniorreis8944 Click on bass enhancement to really kick up the bass levels. Bass enhancement used when listening at lower levels like under 12 as human hearing has less sensitivity to bass and treble at lower volumes. Can leave bass enhancement on even at higher volumes but bass will overpower at some point.
Why can't this update 1004 be auto updated in SmartThings app?
Looks like a bug. Manual even states that if the soundbar is connected to wifi, upadates will be automatic and no need to manual update within the app. At this point, Samsung is unresponsive so have to do the jump drive method. Not been able to test if the 1004 version fixed this as my soundbar is up to date. Maybe Samsung wants to shy away from auto updates as if something goes wrong during the process (updating done unattended and nobody monitoring the process) the soundbar can brick if the power goes out during the updating (not so much during the downloading part).

Only that it costs less. But not only do you miss out on the rear channels, you miss out on the rear dolby atmos. The rear dolby atmos combined with the front dolby atmos creates the seamless surround sound envelopment. You have to experience this with the Q990c. It is truly amazing. @@chebrubin

It looks like no auto-update via software; does not appear in the newest Q990D either. I feel that Samsung does not want to do a firmware update without someone being present as one mishap will brick the soundbar. Software updates are less prone to bricking, but firmware will brick it if the power were to go out during the process.
