President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Prime Minister Christopher Luxon of New Zealand deliver their respective opening statement as the two leaders and their delegation hold a bilateral meeting at the State Dining Room in Malacañan Palace on April 18, 2024.
The visit of Prime Minister Luxon is considered an important milestone in bilateral ties as both nations move towards the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral relations in 2026.
Set to discuss ways in further strengthening various areas of cooperation, the bilateral meeting serves as an important avenue for President Marcos Jr. and Prime Minister Luxon to tackle the long-standing relations of the two countries in terms of the economy, trade, investment, defense, environment, climate change, maritime security, people-to-people exchanges and other multilateral endeavors.
The Philippines and New Zealand formally established diplomatic relations on July 6, 1966. For more than five (5) decades, New Zealand remains an important partner of the Philippines when it comes to trading, export destination, import source and tourism, among others.
