For 5500 they should of thrown in the door jams engine bay and trunk
We’ll 2800$ was body work and the premier paint package started at 2100$ I thought about it cuz it was only 175$ per jamb but my budget said no lol
It's just the clear that makes it look like that, u can sand it urself n straight en the panels by hand ,
@@hodgepodgegarage3911 you should’ve just done the prep yourself
@@hodgepodgegarage3911The dollar sign ($) goes in front of the numbers, bro.
5 weeks? A “ custom shop” had my 1979 trans am for 4 years and when I got it back the body work was so bad I ended up bringing it to maaco to have them fix it lol. You made out good dude!!!
I e heard stories of paint hail! I think it’s good clearly some people have different opinions lol
I think you had a typo and meant “ paint jail”. Trust me dude, good shops don’t want to paint classic cars anymore, it’s mostly hacks with some skills with a “ custom shop” that will do them nowadays unless you pay a great shop a rediculous amount of money. A common scam is to ask money up front for supplies and then they take your car to bare metal. After that your car is trapped there and they just take advantage of their customers spending most of their deposits and doing little work. After my experience I take all my cars to maaco. I had a 80 trans am after the 79 and I took it to maaco. I got it back in 1 week and it turned out really nice. I did a lot of prep myself this time but they really took care of me. Also, what you got from your Maaco is just as good as any regular body shop that works on modern cars except maybe they would take the mirrors off. Enjoy your car buddy, I’m really happy you got it back so fast and it turned out as good as it did.
@@danhoyland142 yes mean paint jail lol I’m very happy with it after the other quotes I got I was happy to take it to maaco, it’s not perfect but I never expected it to be, I’m surprised by the amount of people who said it’s worse off now that it was 6 colors and rusty lol
She’s a beauty! Love those Firebirds!
Its not about the business, its about the employees that do the actual work!!!!!
Well, it is about if the business will allow the employees to take the time and materials to make for a quality job.
@@ProleDaddy you do make a good point 👍💯
True story: A buddy of mine in high school (2004 or so) had a 01 Prelude. His dad paid for the $999 paint job at Maaco from silver to black. His dad went up there and inspected the car in the sun and noticed orange peel and paint runs all over it. He told them to sand it and re-paint it again. This went on about 5 more time times til he was finally satisfied. (I think they got their best painter to spray the car the final time) So in a way he got a $4,999 for $999 because they had to spray the car 5 more times.. lol But man that final paint job looked so good, It looked factory.
"I'm not paying $1,000 for paint runs.."🤣
Doesn't look to tea bag for a Maaco paint. I also thought about going to Maaco so this review actually helps ease that anxiety of just thinking of taking it their. I will say I am stripping the car down to a rolling shell with no glass before bringing it to them because of the horror stories. But I will say you need to do something different with the suspension setup, like revert it back to stock height, and running different size tire.
And I will say that I will say that I will say I wouldn't do it.
They are ok if you're just having a couple panels shot for a flip car but you better do the body work yourself.
I paid them 5500 for my Datsun. The job was the same as yours I was 99% Happy. Mine was rattle canned and needed work. I am paying for another car of mine by a restoration place and gave them over 13k so I will be taking my others back to maaco
in 1984 I paid $5,000 to have my '78 repainted, they did an awesome job. Plus I paid $5000 for it when I bought it in 1980. And I was working at McDonald's at the time.
Someone spending 75-100% of their yearly income in a paint job? You don't sound cool, you sound like you were a loser 😂
5000 dollars in 1984 is around 13.250 dollars
You worked 2000 hours at McD to buy a TA? I don't think so.
Honestly and no disrespect, it’s too soon to tell how well of a job Maaco did. Proof is in the prep. If that surface rust and rust pitting wasn’t addressed it will be obvious at the first change of seasons when the finish starts to bubble knock on wood it won’t. There is a definite reason for Maaco paint jobs. You basically get a Maaco job or you spend 3x+ for a job that addresses the prep better and the final orange peel better.
Your right, and then there's the quality of the paint used. Seen a cheap paint turn flat in one year in Florida sun.
Glad to see a good review. Makes me less hesitant to go thru them here soon. Thanks for the video.
I learned by by the equipment painting bikes i found on the street then buying hoods at the junkyard . Then painted my car and it looked great.
Remember, with Maaco or Earl Scheib you get what you pay for. That car should be a 10 to 15 thousand if not more for the amount of work that needs done on it. Only time will tell how good the work really is.
I blew a four square foot chunk of paint off the hood of an old Camaro I had painted at fact o bake. The employees were baked alright.
Beautiful TA! I'd love to see more videos on it.
So happy you let her pick plum crazy purple 💜 💕 ❤️ good job dad!!!!❤
looks great for a driver. I'm encouraged because I'm paying about the same for my paint at a little shop off the beaten path.
I guess Maaco has come along way. They use to spray everything and I mean everything. The results seemed just OK but I couldn't justify the price with the results but I guess times sure has changed with inflation. I would just have painted myself.
Looks great! 👍
Good job.. I remember having my dad's 70 olds tornado for $900 at maaco 8 years ago. Burgundy metallic had a white vinyl top and blood red leather interior.. Nice Garage
In 1986 I maybe paid around $750 for Macco to paint my '78 Trans Am after I did all the body work. Included jams. It was just a winter beater.
Looks great, congrats!
Great video🤙 I’ve got a turbo Buick I want to get painted Black definitely checking Macco
Looks awesome
I took my truck for an estimate I feel
Like it was a good price for what it is. They showed me around and they give 4-5 years warranty. Great service
It seems like it just depends on which maaco you go to when I went the painters came out and looked at it and we’re the ones who told the lady behind the counter how much body work it would take and one of the painters was showing me pictures of his 77 Camaro he painted so I figured it was in good hands, they had to repaint the scoop because they missed a spot and they took it back and reshot it for free with no issues, so I’m happy with it!
Lots of luck keeping it clean I have a Corvette and Lincoln Mark VIII in black and its an endless job they show everything even scratches and chips and dust ,when their clean and waxed they are badass looking but that only last if they are parked in the garage ,Maaco did a pretty nice job on your Trans Am good luck with it .
Huge transformation for the TA. Looks good. Only real gripe I would have to Maaco is they could have done better on the area above the mirror as far as surface prep goes. Prep is everything especially for a black car. Some Maaco shops are better than others as you know. Looks like they layed down the base coat clear coat pretty good. There will always be imperfections in a paint job obviously less if you spend more money. I have seen paint errors in 10-20k paint jobs. Hard to see but they were there. Would have never seen them but the owner pointed them out lol.
I know your happy with the transformation of your TA. I would be.
Can’t wait to see it with the decal package on it . That will definitely make a huge difference.
I just finished my 81 TA Daytona pace car. Did it all myself. I had 1400 in materials. Took me 7 months to do it. Labor of love for sure. The big bird is tricky to put on but not to bad. I did do it by myself yes it was nerve racking.
Yeah, at first I was a little annoyed at some of the imperfections, but knowing how much a perfect paint job costs and seeing all the body work it needed I’m not upset, and like I said this car is a driver, definitely not a perfect show car! And I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been told “black is a mirror you’ll see every imperfection” and that’s actually the second maaco I want to for a quote the first said 2000$ and the quote said “no bodywork” lol but I’m very happy with it and can’t wait for this hood decal to show up to finically finish this thing off!!
$5500 ? Really
Looks good, what are the 4 holes on top of the driver’s fender near the windshield? I see 4 similar holes on the driver’s side rear deck lid between the rear glass and the trunk lid
Looks good.
Looks good
Love the car , love the paint for a daily driver , i will subscribe to see the decals go on , the stance is wrong but its not my car , your car your way ... Enjoy a very iconic car , Pontiac built some beauties
I have a relative that restores cars. He does all the prep work. Know the owner at Maaco. He has his best sprayer paint his cars.
I, cannot say, Thank You, enough.
I had my 80 Z28 done in black by Maaco and they did a really nice job.
Awesome video, curious about the setup of your garage. Thinking about building something similar, could you please share size and construction details? Keep it up and thanks sir!
I had economy paint jobs done back in the day from different shops, including maaco. Other then a paint crew that actually gets off they're ass and do a decent job. The trick is, take your own time to sand it down. Then bring it to the paint shop. The second lil trick is, ask the shop if they actually use hardener with they're paint. If they don't use hardener, leave the place. Cause I guarantee you, that your budget paint job won't last even a year. The first time I went to a Econo paint shop. Even letting my ride cure for 2 months. You can literally put your fingernail into the paint and it would actually make a mark or even peel off! The cheap places that actually used hardener in the mix. The paint job lasted for years. Other then that. It's best to take it to a proper place or learn on your own. Decent professional paint jobs cost over $3000 for a reason. And when a good paint shop, wants to go all the way with it, it will run you over $6000. It's cause, they gonna take your entire car apart and do the entire thing piece by piece! 🎤 Drop
PS: No maaco job is worth over $1000.00. You seriously got ripped off dude. I don't care how much body work they put in it. Job looks nice, yes. Price, hellllll fxxkin no. For over $5000, gotdamn you could've went to a custom build shop and do it right. Just sayin! Double 🎤 drop
Nice finish, Black is tough to paint. Some shops wont paint black without special prep $$$ and every imperfection shows. Lighter colors mask imperfections.
Cool , 😎!
What maaco did you use because the one in Charleston really messed up my truck paint job
I have been considering doing that with my Zombietruck, body is straight as a razor and no rust at all. It deserves a good paint job. But won't lie... people love the Zombie Response gimmick I did on it.
Hey brother; you should make a follow up video ant tell us how it held up Ofer time.
I have a 75' Formula that is almost ready to send to the paint shop. I'm going to do the same thing. It's a driver. Not a Trailer Queen. I want to have fun driving the car. Not just show my freinds what a cool car I have. Anyway, I think you got a great deal for all the body work that you had to have done to your TA. The paint job looks great. There's a very good chance that it will last a long time, no matter what the nay sayer's say. Thanks for making this video. I'm sure that a lot of us are at least thinking about this option.
I appreciate that! Yeah I couldn’t bare nor afford a 10,000$ paint job so I took a chance! I’m very happy with it and I’m already terrified I’m gonna scratch it so I couldn’t imagine how worried I’d be if it was a show quality job!
I think it came out great for what you wanted
Ok so the mirrors weren't removed which is why they look a bit dry on the sides.
Doesn't look to bad on video..
5 grand is very cheap, I'm a spray painter here in South Australia and the materials alone here would cost me around 4-5 grand at trade prices for quality products..
Looks good well done .
I had maaco paint 2 cars ive owned.... they did a fine job for the money... Its all about the employees they have for the job you'll receive.
What if had the mirrors off for them to hang and paint?
Like my Daddy used to say " Son! you can't polish a Turd " LOL
A fellow F-Body, AND it be a Firebird enthusiast?! My friend I subscribed! I'm working on getting my Firebird painted in the summer
Lol another "follower"SMH
I think it looks great
I’ve got a ‘77 T/A I’m working on. It’s never going to be a show car either so I may go with maaco as well, they did a really nice job. Just found your channel and it’s great..thanks!
You gotta do something about them big friggin tires
Make a bracket for the air cleaner base. It can vibrate and turn enough to cut the fuel line on an afb=fire. Not too bad for 5500. Be a whole different car with 4x2 tires
I think its a decent deal. If a spot bothers you, you can do a spot repair
What's with the big front tires? Are you going for the stock car look. For me I like the small skinny pro street look. But that's me.
We’ll when I first built the car I was going for a kind of Baja look, it’s got 31” all terrains all around on it, it’s got a 3” lift kit on it, everything I own is lifted lol I like the look, some people hate it…and let me know they hate it lol
I have a black 2014 Mustang GT convertible that I want painted Fighter Jet Gray. The body is perfect and only has a few rock chips and some surface scratches. Nothing major, but I hate black. I want the jambs, under the trunk and the areas in the engine bay where the black is visible. What can I expect to pay?
They told me door Jambs were $175 each( same for trunk Jambs and hoods) and if you go with their “premier paint job” the one here in sc said it starts at $1800 so I’d say somewhere around 2000-3000$ probably
Wheels and tires look great .......Bubba
How is the paint holding up now?
Any problems with paint bubbling? Posters elsewhere were brutal with a maaco patron for taking his Caddy there. And having paint bubble a couple of weeks after his car was painted. I see its all smiles over here (because that location did a better job). I suppose a bit of bad luck makes a person CrAzy, not.
Grind and Fill.
Should’ve had them paint the chrome trim too. Worst case scenario now is you could go get it wrapped for 2000 and just change color every 3-4 yrs. No way you could wrap like it was. I think i would’ve just got the surface to a place i could get it wrapped.
I was hoping you would get closer to the paint so we could see it but not bad at all. I have a T/A CZcams channel. Good job..
South Carolina! Moving there soon from NYC / Long Island New York
That’s a drastic change in location lol I’m somewhat out of the city’s so it’s nice a quiet where I’m at! As long as you don’t mind the humidity and mosquitos!
I'm from Brooklyn, moved to Florida in 2001. These hicks will drive you nuts lol
that's actually pretty good price you paid. The maaco here in Sacramento wants $5,000 just for the paintjob on my 2000 black dodge Dakota that needs no body work, just has worn clear coat on the tops. I'm looking for somewhere else to take it.
I thought so, I know paint is expensive since and it was by far the cheapest around here, I’m happy with it!
Unless the moldings for the windshield and rear glass are dented really bad all you need to do is clean them up and scuff them with some scotch bright pads and repaint them flat black. You should still be able to find the clips at Classic or some of the other restoration parts houses.
That’s been on my to do’s list for a while lol I replaced the clips when I put the car together, just haven’t taken the time lol
Looks alright to me man, bet it feels good! Just got the frame rolled back under my car for the 3rd time. 20 years of fuckin around, fixed and ready fianlly
I’m so happy to have it one solid color, never expected to be a perfect restoration job, feels good to just have it done!
@@hodgepodgegarage3911 I've got the front nose of a 78 firebird I bought 23 years ago for a lemans project I had. Going to paint a fire chicken, and smokey and the bandit for a wall hanger now
@@NickFortier I have collected a couple hoods and have them hanging on the wall in the garage lol
I'm not saying it's bad by any means. Yet for $5500, I'd would have likely purchased all the equipment myself minus a spray booth and given it a go on my own. You'd be surprised what a cheap spray gun and a bit of determination can get you. It would've been a fraction of the cost as well.
I have done that but it came out bad, I suck at painting.
@Luis Gonzalez lol, you are not alone. To do it well, we really have to want to do it and commit. It's not easy for many of us. ✌️👍
@@car-diologist I really want it to do it, took my truck front apart sand it the whole thing fix the dents primed it painted it but my skills were not good enough. I might do it again.
@Luis Gonzalez I'd put money on you doing a better job for a fraction of the price. Be patient with yourself. If you make a mistake, sand it down and paint it again. Just don't rush yourself. Have fun with it. Once it's done, you'll appreciate it even more.
Looks good, but jeez, those tires? I like stock tire size and stock springs.
I figure two things are..Your Happy and you should only have to do it once. It's hard to find a good consistent price without somebody doing a crappy job or keeping your car forever and ever. The real question is all things considered would you use them again that answer comes with a person's knowledge patience and experiences' and budget.
lets see how long it lasts before the little bubbles appear and the paint starts chipping off.
Let’s hope a while lol
Is your car 4 wheel drive, why is it sitting so high?
I used to do the body work and just send it them for paint. They spray all day.
Why dont they take off the over spray
What's with those tires.
Seen a lot of maaco videos. You probably could have just done their mid level paint job with all the body work and saved a grand. Especially if the goal is a daily driver, one color, non trailer queen.
Looks great! What size tires do you have on it?
Haha they are 31x10x15, the car actually has 3” lift spindles on the front and bigger leads on the back lol

You turned a Transam into a 4 / 4 pickup truck!😂😂
I could’ve done that same paint job in one weekend for $500 in my garage i😅 used to do it all the time
5k u get what u pay for nice job 😎😎
Worked next door to a body shop. What you don't know is how much they beat that car moving it in and out of the shop if they store the cars inside at night and move them out every morning. Beating a cold engine is not respecting the owners car
Awesome job for the price and well worth it.
It’s like Earl Schibe any car for 99.95 no ups no extras. Some of those guys worked at Earl Schibe but were shooting hot rods at night and were amazing shooting enamel and as they progressed the lacquers and when everyone got lazy using urethane’s they were the ones guys went to to get good classic paint job. I’m talking the guys around Chicago during 70-80’s It’s all they did they had to get good by default. Now prep that was a different story.
I remember when Maco first started you could get a chaep paint job for $100.00.
Overspray is always free at Maaco.
I do like free! Lol
Maybe put a coat of ceramic coat on it yourself for $100 after you put stickers on. Since the paint is new it should be easy and take you an afternoon.
5500 alot of loot! And black is not forgiving on bad body work... But looks great!
The cheapest absolute cheapest do it yourself paint job I ever did on my car as a stop gap as a beginner was sand it down to bare metal, including any surface rust, (By Hand) bondo some pinholes, with the green high bond bondo, re-sand, then use Home Depot or Lowes, spray paint for metal, in white, then gloss clear rattle can, then wet sand it.
Also to save money on spray cans, I bought a gallon of paint for metal, not automotive but like handyman paint rated for metal like an iron gate, and cheap $1 $2 paint 6" foam rollers and rolled it on. LOL
Spent $200 bucks in total. Did it over a weekend in my garage.
And as it turned out, after I used some Meguiars and Turtle wax spray ceramic wax from looking at it parked 20 feet away it didn't look like a $200 dollar paint job...
It looked like a $5,000 paint job. That was 7 years ago and it still looks good and shiny. I keep it waxed once a month.
I can always take it to a body shop when I'm ready and have the Pros re-do it for ten grand or whatever. lol
Macco is the Spirit airlines of paint shops.
😅
With that much rust on it , I wouldn't touch it for 5k.
You're never going to be able to stop that rust from reoccurring.
Good luck
I sure miss my trans am
Miss my 81. Only can afford pitcher's.
is this 4x4??
for 5500 they should not be painting your trim regardless if it needs to be replaced .. for that reason i would go somewhere eles.. I do understand your supposed to do some prep work which u didn't .. i give it a 6 for effort.. on the other hand the car is cool as hell.. Congrats .
I think you have some painter wannabes here telling you to have done it yourself. Rare is the man who can actually 'do it himself' in his garage or barn. You did right and Maaco did right by you.
In my shop a job like that would run about $12,000 thats if there is no metalwork to be done and it wouldn't be done in 2 wks!!!!
Im painting the same car but midnight blue its alot of work but painting is the easiest lol 😂
you should have used the correct tire size instead of cutting the fenders.
5500 is a bit much to be honest should've shopped around a bit more
I got 3 other quotes and sadly this was the cheapest, not to mention my boss had his 65 nova painted for 5000$ with no body work just a respray so I felt like it was a descent price, this is the first car I’ve actually had fully painted so I’m a newbie to paint and body, your probably right could have found it cheaper maybe but hey, it looks good to me lol
@@hodgepodgegarage3911 wow what in the hell! 5000$ just for a respray?!? God damn there's people out over here in socal doing full jobs for 2500-4000 body work and all those prices really shock me
Not bad at all
So anything under $5500 and Maaco is still Earl Schives level.
Earl Scheib, lol...still remember those ads-- "I'll paint any car for $99.95" 😂
It's Macco I've seen worse. but why so high off the ground
You should get a $50 mic
The problem I have is where I live paint jobs don't last that long maybe five years the clearcoat burns... Unless you have a garage.I'm thinking about just primeing it black and leaving it.. clearcoat starts turning white and peeling it looks like crap..Or maybe I'll vinyl wrap it I don't know , rust never a issue.. Black primer on you car would look fine ,
It lives in the garage unless I’m driving it, it’s by no means a show car paint job but I think it looks amazing and I guess we’ll all see how long it lasts lol
