I thought he was a joke in Breath of the Wild, and wonder how an idiot like him could do the stuff he did in the boss fight.
But between how kind of kick ass he was in gameplay, him showing he did care for his followers, and this scene, yeah I like Kohga.

Sooga wasn't just his best lackey. He was the son Master Kohga never had. And it tore him apart to leave him behind. That is why he went to Princess Zelda. That's why he cried when he saw the King and his daughter having that beautiful moment at the temple. He knows that love all too well.

It's sad because Kohga probably meant what he said about the banana in a tongue-in-cheek bantery sort of way and probably hasn't thought about it since, but Sooga took it to heart and dedicated his life trying to repay Kohga for that one simple favor that saved his life.

On another level... Sooga has a trait in characters I love because it's what I experienced. The unpayable debt. My best friend was someone I met in middle school and I felt indebted to as he kept me holding onto this world for so long. People forget how much one action can influence a person's life. In Sooga's case it was a banana that was given to him while he was hungry. For my friend it was me simply asking if I was in the right location. If the nearby twin bridges are any indication, Kohga and Sooga managed to reach Dueling Peaks, just a short ways from Fort
Hateno prior to the ground mission of Each Step Like Thunder. Here's how I break down what happened after Sooga's sacrifice:
Following Sooga's (assumed) demise, Kohga spends the next few moments mourning him whilst hiding a ways from Fort Hateno, when Link's party arrives.
Kohga secretly watches Link start to struggle against the combined assault of the Blight Ganons, as he suddenly pictures the outcome of Sooga's bout with them. His mind starts to race... "If Sooga couldn't defeat these phantoms all at once, how can this Link character?" With that thought in his head, Kohga's helplessness reaches critical mass and he suddenly finds himself secretly feeling for Link as well, seeing him as a parallel (of sorts) of Sooga.
Then Zelda finally awakens her sealing power in a bid to save her knight... and an opportunity arises. Seeing this, Kohga has an opportunity to avenge his fallen comrades, including Sooga. Knowing that Zelda and her forces wouldn't accept him among their ranks as he is due to their history, he takes the opportunity to disguise himself as one of their Hylian soldiers, inserting himself among their ranks and helping to fight off the monsters and Guardians surrounding the fort. After the victory and Zelda's subsequent rallying speech, Kohga (still in disguise) finally works up the nerve to ask Zelda if he can speak privately with her. With Impa accompanying them, Zelda asks what the "Hylian soldier" wanted to say, and in response, Kohga leaps up to (I'm assuming) the Cliffs of Quince, drops his disguise, and - as Impa goes on the defensive - leaps off the cliffs and, bowing himself before them, proposes an alliance, finally ending the Yiga's long-long-standing grudge against Hyrule.
BTW, going further, when you think about it, Link and Sooga aren't that different from one another. Think about it:
They both have someone to protect, someone for whom they're willing to die: Sooga has Kohga, while Link has Zelda.
They're both very skilled with swords, though Sooga uses two swords to Link's one.
They're both loyal to their respective groups: Sooga is loyal to Kohga and the Yiga, while Link is loyal to Zelda and the Kingdom of Hyrule.
    Comment if you noticed this.

The fact that Sooga is grateful for master kohga. But really people acting like he still survived, um no he didn't. This scene was to show he did die for Kohga to live on and lead the yiga clan. That's why Kohga turned to the good side half-way to the game, to avenge his fallen 2nd in command (friend). Much respect for Sooga

You know a playable Character in a game/DLC is REALLY GOOD on capitals when
1: They aren't featured in any trailer or promotional material at all, when it's a fan-favourite.
2: Has a unique banger of a theme that always overshadows the stage theme every time they SPAWN, not by just being close to them
    3. It's boss character that not only breaks the rule of a Boss is nerfed when they join your party, but goes beyond that by having things that makes his boss counterpart looking like lacks on everything.
    4. The fact that in order to unlock him you have to EARN IT, they aren't just "hey here you have it that character that you liked so much but it wasn't playable before" or a bland reward for just beating or completing the story/DLC, you have to play GOOD to unlock it on a single mision , which is basically like the devs are telling "you didn't paid to get rewarded you paid to play more and get rewarded for that" which what it always should be.
    5. He becomes playable out of nowhere without any warning at all, he doesn't appear as you could select him and the fact that in the instant he is controllable his theme OVERSHADOWS the menacing and despair giving song was playing throughout the entire chapter
    6. Every single one of it's animations and attacks are exaggerated and over the top
    7. And definitely the best of all, the fact that instead of the same notification type sound it plays every time a character becomes playable, Sooga straight up plays the intro of his theme.
Hands down to the best and most badass character ever created in the warriors and LoZ franchise

He knew he was dead meat so he chose to not allow Kohga to get attacked and killed, while using his own soul so that no more power could be offered to the blights in case he was captured instead of killed.

I just think/hope he was injured to the point he couldn’t fight for the rest of the events, likely returning to the hideout to heal. The clan there would probably have to restrain him to prevent him from returning to Master Kohga. When Kohga says he wants revenge for Sooga, that doesn’t necessarily mean he died. His best lackey was taken out of the fight, with grievous injuries. Kohga wants to return the favor. This is just me hoping my favorite character survives, even if he doesn’t show up in the actual game.

2 Yiga Footsoldiers: What’s your problem, little rat?
Sooga (idk how) many years later: Who are the rats now?
Honestly, this cutscene was sad. Sooga was poor and needed food and encountered the Yiga. The 2 soldiers treated him like shit, but Kohga accepted him and it was the right choice. It’s more of a mystery of how old Sooga was and if he had parents or not and if he was Sheikah or Hylian or maybe a child of a Yiga soldier. But it seems like we know that he’s alive given the fact that he’s playable. I assume that maybe he was recovering after fighting off the Blight Ganon’s in the hideout and he’s seen alive in “The Battle of Fort Hateno” where Kohga orders the Yiga clan to fight the guardian scout Is and Sooga appears. I do hope we can see him in breath of the wild 2 and learn where he was during that time and we need a whole more backstory of him and other characters maybe in a 3rd age of calamity dlc as I feel like there should be some main missions after Calamity Ganon’s defeat. I also want and wish Astor was playable but it’s still possible as they never said that the second wave would be the last dlc. Maybe BOTW 2 will release either in March-December of 2022 so that’ll be a perfect timing before or after it comes out to conclude age of calamity. Thoughts on all of this?

So, the Siege of Fort Hateno is non-canon. Also, being a playable character doesn't mean the Sooga is alive. We have Calamity Ganon as playable, but it is definitely dead and sealed away. For the end credits, they may have just added him in just for a cameo, but that is just speculation. I really like Sooga, but it just doesn't seem like he is alive.

Sooga has to be one of my favorite characters in the game and his implied fate is one of the saddest moments I’ve ever seen in a Zelda game, spin-off or main. I love that Kohga seems like a goofy, yet chill dude I wanna hang out with and celebrate with all the bananas 😂
I’m very mildly allergic to bananas, but they’re so good!
Does anyone find it annoying how people are like “aCKshUaLlY sOoGa iS sTiLl aLivE?” Like no duh, if you played the game or watched the cutscenes, you’d know, but it doesn’t make the scene less sad. It was implied that he was killed, “implied.” Regardless of whether he died or not, Sooga was willing to repay his leader for saving his life. Although I’m still wondering why they didn’t just flee with their teleportation.

It's because AOC happened in another timeline, where ereko went into the past which caused the calamity to even start in the first place. In the main timeline, all this never happened with khoga, which is why he's still a bit of a cocky bastard who just wants link dead

The fact that kohga was hesitating on leaving behide his own really must have hurt he knew he wasnt strong to be of service and would get in the way, Those couple of seconds of kohga hesitating I bet he really did have a kinda heart in there even his own yell had pain and sorrow behide it and now he will kill link if it means to avenge his fallen lieutenant.
