This is exactly what I learned in the Army. Riding in the hatch of a Stryker vehicle, you learn to use your body as a shock absorber. You feel the vehicle move around under you, but you stay pretty well in place. Loosey goosey. Another great video Bret.

Same for shooting from a boat: decouple and pay attention to the patterns so you are ready for the hard bounce every few waves. Combo that with a technique similar to skeet shooting where you fire as the sweep of the motion is right.

Back in the mid to late 70's I had a Kawasaki KL 250 which was back then considered an enduro bike. Not being old enough to legaly ride on the street most of which you teach I learned trail riding, not racing, in the woods and strip mines where I lived. The value in your teachings is not only for the inexperienced street rider but to remind riders like me the lessons of trail riding that I have forgotten. I watch your videos and think, oh yea now I remember. Funny how we forget skills that we learned long ago. This is why I subscribed to your channel awile ago.

Love the weightless rider video. It's a lot like riding a horse. The more you try to micro manage it the less cooperative it becomes. Also, if I can add my bit, when you stand on the pegs you transfer your weight to the lowest part of the bike and shifting your weight keeps the center of gravity and therefore your control in a more easily controlled and changeable range. It feels completely counter intuitive at first but I found that I was doing a lot less steering and fighting the bike which made for a for more fun ride. I trust the bike to handle the trail now and oddly, I fall a lot less than I used to! Keep up the great work. I learn something every time I watch. T

Probably your best video yet. When on a bigger bike I find the tolerance for being offline or in a poor position to be very low, so being proactive is so important. For me the weightless feeling is almost like the bike is connected to my arms and legs and is dangling below me as it moves around the terrain and obstacles. Sounds strange I know.

Who the heck dislikes this? Geez.
I found myself intuitively doing this on my Versys 650 when I took a wrong turn down a forest service road (Witt Rd in TN). I had no clue what I was doing, and laid the bike down three (!!!) times trying to navigate that trail on stock tires! By the end of it, my legs were jelly from picking the bike back up, and I was too tired to maintain the rigid posture I had going in, so I just told myself 'screw it, let the bike do what it needs to do' and just used a lot of throttle control to keep myself constantly moving forward, never fully standing, but never quite sitting. And it worked!

I've been riding motorcycles for more than 50 years (I'm 67 yrs old). I started by riding the back trails and fire roads in eastern Oregon. That dirt riding experience taught me how to ride, and respect, my road bikes when I hit the highways. Your 'Weightless Rider' style I learned by trial and error. Your right, its a great technique for learning balance and control. Great video. This should be required viewing for all motorcycle safety courses.

BRAVO! This video perfectly summarizes how to ride on ANY surface. It isn’t easy to do and takes effort to learn but once you feel it you will understand and your “oneness” with the bike will awaken. Once you experience it its like a drug and you want to feel it again and again.
Think of it as flying over the bike. It’s a rush!

This is why watching good riders live is so important. The very best motocross riders I have seen just flow in anticipation, and the more you observe and try to emulate them, the greater your appreciation is of them, and the more you learn. But you will never truly learn until you put the lessons into action, and better yet, you have some way of getting feedback external to yourself.

Whether you ride a horse, a bike or a motorbike your poise should be the same: the head (ear), shoulders, hips and the back of your heels must align and, as much as possible, be perpendicular to the ground. The head alone weighs about 1.5 to 2.5 kg (depending of your hair cut :)) plus the helmet, and its center of mass is just forward of the rest of the body's center of mass. So, any movement of the head throw off the balance of the body, even if just a tad. There is a reason to look far ahead and where you want to go so the bike or the horse will follow. Some loosening exercises before a ride will do a good deal of help to keep the joints elastic and the muscles relaxed.

As a bmx rider, primarly riding bmx trails (and now getting started on offroad motorcycle riding aswell), it's exactly like you said, specially when jumping, if you stay stiff, chances are your bike is going to spit you out. Your body needs to act as a natural spring, and you acheive that by having your body relaxed and calm and letting your bike do what she wants (to a certain point :'D).

Excellent information - recently got an 07 R1200GSA and noted greater weight and height and am loving it but also really struggling at times in the off-road I think because of those two new factors over my former GS - I do practice this kind of body attitude when off-road and at times it seems to foster a kind of oneness with the trail , the bike and myself, not to make too fine a point of it. Being fairly tight financially combined with greater weight and height, I am finding myself being even more careful almost to a fault... The thought of breaking it in the least, a very big deterrent emotionally and psychologically on my rides... As always much thanks for your unique viewpoints and wisdom delightfully expressed!

The transition/comparison from/to mountain biking and adventure bikes is not a good fit for me. Mountain biking for 20 years gave me the skills to throw a light frame below me all over the place in rough terrain. Pulling the front, kicking up the rear or even pulling the whole bike off of the path as a "bunny hop". None of those things happen sitting on top of a 500lb. bike. I actually had to concentrate on NOT forcing the machine to move and to let it do it's own thing. The "weightless rider" technique is something I am still trying to master after 3 seasons of riding. Ergonomics is a must see video of Bret's before you try and become weightless. I would say this is the SECOND most important video. Thanks Bret for all of your hard work.

Appreciate your video series more than ever. In my area there are no courses available.

I guess this guy does a good job explaining the concept he thought needed explaining I never contemplated it before it just came so natural after doing it a few times I would’ve never thought it needed to be explained. I bet there’s a guy out there even smarter that knows more words and definitions could even come up with more in-depth explanation of something a guy comes by naturally riding his bike,

Great advice I also do same brother, the video not gonna break it apart like others... the rest of the "skills" come from practicing and riding Daily and pushing yourself... Find a good rider friend to follow and learn from I taught my nephew's there now in supercross and sponsored I love supercross etc but I love trails more nothing like flying by trees "s away doing 95 mph haha and exploring on my Enduro I still own them there haha 😝

You gotta love that jazz drumming! An upright bass addition would elevate your next video! 😀

@@BretTkacs Thanks Bret, that's really nice of you. I'm a little far away right now but I'll do my best to visit you some time.
I believe you were in Costa Rica not too long ago. I hope you enjoyed yourself. Pura vida!
