Hawk predator kills chicken

  • This is sad. After losing a chicken yesterday, we set cameras up on the chicken coop, suspecting a racoon. Here, you see a hawk come in and take out my favorite chicken, a Black Wyandot named "Sassypants." The video is for informative purposes only. It's not gory, just very sad. I will be making some alterations to my chicken coop soon. For now, all the remaining chickens are locked up and quite safe. This was shot Feb. 18, 2010 in Port Orchard, Washington. If you are sensitive, turn down your sound.

    That poor chicken was screaming in agony for about 1 full minute. I thought it was instantaneous. As a chicken owner who has found piles of feathers a few times, I am horrified to realize that it is not as fast a death as I had hoped. I know it is the way of nature, but nature is cruel.

    Thanks for putting this up. We have been losing chickens during the day and have been very unsure. I just saw some kind of bird of prey over the chicken run and I went out after it and we're another girl down. That's 5 in the last 2 weeks... We even have a hen, but no protection for a bird of prey, apparently. I had to turn the sound off on your video, so sad.. but thanks for the information. we'll make alterations for our (girl and boy) not too.

    Lost a hen yesterday I’ve had for 6 years. She was one of my backyard hens, i hand raised and I still remember gathering worms for her when it rained. I live in a suburban area so I thought I’d be fine with predators but one night I left them outside. They usually sleep on the playhouse beams (the coop is on the bottom of the playhouse) but yesterday all I saw was a small trail of blood and feathers everywhere. Everything wants chickens I guess. Sorry this happened I understand how it feels because they feel like part of the family.

    • @Scott89878
      @Scott89878 Před 9 lety +1

      SugarSnap Mama So, you don't keep chickens in Suburbia, and if you do, have a small dog in the backyard too. I've a Pomeranian that runs around the yard with the two very aggressive roosters (and they get along). I have hedged the odds against the hawks, as a hawk would have to: fight two roosters and a dog to get a meal. And with the noise made, I'd be out there within a minute or two. My roosters got sharp spurs though, I could trim them or file them, but I kinda want them to have them for the hawks. My roosters can kick pummel them three times in one jump. Not to mention my roosters were larger than every other chicken in the fair (not if only I could have entered them in). Meanwhile, the dog marks the yard with her excretory habits and I do a bit as well, being a guy in the middle of nowhere, so silly foxes and such tend to stay away too.

    • @sugarsnapmama5671
      @sugarsnapmama5671 Před 9 lety +1

      We live in the Suburbs, and I don't see a reason why we can't have hens just like anyone else. As for Roosters, they're great, but no match for a coyote or a fox anyway. I have 2 big dogs. They're great for protection, but they can't be outside with the chickens all the time. We have coyotes, foxes, hawks, opossums, and racoons,so...we built our coop like Fort Knox. Only way to do it.

The store sells chicken coops and supplies for raising chickens. Now this is in the city mind you, Seattle to be exact. They also sell chickens and ducks. They have chickens out of doors in coops. When we left I looked up in to a small tree nearby and there was what I believe to be a Coopers hawk right next door to the store. Waiting to get his chance.

    Having a livestock dog helps also. Back in the old days of common sense, if some thing was infringing on your life... you put an end to it, plain and simple. If anything comes after family, pets, food, personal property, it's lights out. Makes no difference to me who or what it is.

    Bottle rockets my ass. I don't give a good gd what the law is, the first hawk I see is going to get a load of Remington Turkey Nitro #5 shot, PERIOD. I've invested a lot of money in my French Black Copper Marans and I'll be damned if the Federal Government is going to reimburse me when one of their protected hawks kill my chickens. Yes I'm taking all precautions, but I will protect what is mine. I have that right, law be damned.

      i don't know what the law is like where you live but here you can kill anything that attacks your livestock including the neighbor's dog.
      that coop should have had a top over it but at the same time you have to protect your property and chickens should not be cooped up all the time.

    @janitabonn I did raise her since a chick, I think it has to do with the personality of the chicken, I raised all my chickens, she was the only one like that, When I picked her out among the other day old chicks at the hatchery, i decided to do a little experiment, I waited to see who came up to me, I put my hand in the cage and she came up and pecked me, I didn't want all chickens to be like that in case she turned out mean, so there you have it, she wasn't scared, the others were

    I have chickens loose all day on my property.and have a lot of Red Shoulder Hawks flying around the property. I clap with a good pop that sounds like a gun shot whenever I see them on the property. The hawks keep away. If I saw one of them actually going after my chickens they are dead. They seem to understand that.

      When i hear those sounds coming from my henhouse i know right away what to do and that is to get dressed if am not already, grab my gun and some more ammo, get in there as fast as i can, identify and shoot at the predator killing my livestock and fill the bloody thing with bullets. Simple as that. All that without a moment of hesitation and fear, with intent to do what must be done.
