Unsuccessful Hawk Attack

  • I caught a hawk attack on the run camera. First you hear the songbirds get agitated, then the pullets start watching. And then the hawk swoops down at the front left side of the run. One foolish pullet actually goes to the front to see what is going on!

      Thank you! That run just kept expanding! Only part of it has a roof, but the unroofed part has the welded wire fencing over it. It's kept out racoons, foxes, and hawks! The hawk wouldn't have gotten even that close a few months earlier because I had an outer run that had aviary netting over it and they didn't get through that either. Thanks for the compliment!

      @@handledav Idk where this notion of a rooster fighting off hawks comes from. Hawks are apex predators they've hit their pray most times before it ever knows its been got, if it hadn't been for the chicken wire that bantam or one of her chicks would have been gone. I homestead 5 acres and we free range all of our birds but our small turkeys and bantams right now. I have two roosters that run with the girls a very big black and white Maran and a game rooster mix, I've lost several small poults to a young hawk within the last month.

      lol! I had to watch to see which hen it was! That is one of my Cream Crested Legbars. Funny to try to figure out which one is which because I haven't had them since the spring. She wasn't "on guard" just watching... she also isn't one of the "loud" hens. I had a couple that were notoriously noisy and enjoyed making announcements of any kind. I wish that the tape was a bit longer so that you could hear the start of the chattering from the songbirds. That was when the hens started to pay attention. Then again someone already complained that it was too long!

    What a nice, cozy and safe place for chickens! It was so relaxing to watch them hanging out, better then watching fishes in an aquarium. And how amazingly quick they run for shelter, first under the table and than in the coop! Hawk-alarm seems to be deeply engraved in hen's DNA.
    After the last pullet went back in the coop I somehow expected a small wing reaching out and slam the tiny door of the coop shut. But of course, they had to leave it open because the tiny chick was still out there. ;) I hope the little one made it to safety too.

      Our coop and run has evolved from one of those really small tractor supply coops which was very temporary... my husband built them a run that was 8 x 8 x 8 that was screened in hardware cloth. The coop itself became a repurposed Resin shed that was outside the run... then the run expanded some more... and the external daytime run was added... then we sold the flock... and started over and had to build a new coop! It's a work in progress.

    Our worse year ever. Someone we know went on the internet to buy hen's for us to raise for eggs and meat. 50/50 split. Ended up being Small hen's. The seller swore all were Hens. 5 were roasters . Buyer beware. We have day predators, hawks, huge black birds and even foxes I've seen in my yard in the morning and afternoon. If you don't get a chicken that will naturally go to the coop it becomes a nightmare. Flying up into trees. I live near water. I have weasels, not about the food but about the hunt. Then the fox, the opossum, the raccoon, snakes, I only have a acre and half of land, live in the city. But I do live on the water, low tide nothing but mud. I had no idea of so many predators. Been living here for 20 years. Like I said this is the worst loosing so many of our chickens. We only have two chickens left. Going to take a break. Up side is that people that walk and jog by our house make positive comments. I tell them we don't have chickens. We have miniature poop machines. 🙂 It still hurts knowing that a predator would inflict such much pain .

    this happened last week... a hawk dove into my neighbors chicken coop and busted a hole in the netting to keep animals out... thank god none of the chickens were hurt...

    • @evawikoff
      @evawikoff  Před 4 lety +1

      Glad to hear that! My run and all the windows in the coop had hardare cloth to keep it predator proof. Netting doesn't work- Hardware cloth is close to foolproof but pricey. I used to have 7"wire fencing outside the run mounted on metal tposts that included another 40X30 feet, I had aviary netting over that, and never had problems with anything breaking through the netting... I did have a hawk fly through a gap over the gate, who then got stuck for a couple of minutes under the aviary netting. There was planty of stuff for the hens to hid under if they didn't make it into the run! I lost hens to hawks in the begining until I got determined to keep them out and still let the chickens out for play time!

    In love with that set up. Do they ever get let out?

    • @evawikoff
      @evawikoff  Před 3 lety +2

      Yes they do! At that time, they were only out when I was around, but you can see where the grass is growing back in front of the run - I usually have welded wire fenciing along a 50 foot section going to the left and there is aviary netting over that. It is predator proof enough to keep the hawks out. The flock is back inside the run by 6 and inside the coop once evening falls. Automatice coop door (chickenguard) that closes everything up tight. I'm usually down to lock the large door before dark, but that ChickenGuard door keeps them safe even if I'm not!

    I love how they are very human like, they go inside to get cover and for saftey, like we go under the bunker when there is some kind of a bomb attack. Lol For some reasons, it felt very human like, especially the cool chicken at the end that didn't seem all that affected, too cool to act scared, so she walks gracefully to get to saftey.
