    We came away impressed when we saw the Alpine Halo9 receiver at CES 2018. It mounts into a single-DIN opening, and gives you a big, floating screen that works with Apple CarPlay & Android Auto. And of course, you get Alpine sound quality as well.

    So far in the past 3 months I have installed 3 of the same alpine units and the screen is bulky and the touchscreen is laggy and not worth the $900, also it’s a pain in the butt to install the screen once everything is in place

    Still waiting for a 4k display and reverse camera. VGA won't cut it anymore. Edit: I'm willing to settle for a display with 1080p and a high quality 1080p camera.

      fourbypete 4K hell I will settle for 1080/720p. Kenwood is finally increasing their car radios to 720p for 2018. Maybe by 2022 we will have 4k radio displays.

    Looks great but the resolution is sub par. I know CarPlay and Android Auto displays seem to all be WVGA but I have a $25 Kindle Fire that has better resolution then this $1,000+ display. Would be nice to have decent resolution for HDMI output.

    • @tatsumaru12345
      @tatsumaru12345 Před 6 lety +1

      Bingo. People go on about 720p being subpar on 5" phones. Not alone 480p at 9". The price has to be recouping r&d costs, rather than the actual hardware. Its still the small 18w rms, where at this price, they could've easily included their power pack. And don't even look how much the dvd add on costs.
      It'll eventually come down, but eh.

      @crutchfield  Před 6 lety +1

      You're right in that it depends a lot on the dash configuration. In some cases, you may end up blocking vents or buttons with the screen. It does help that it's a single-DIN mount, and you can angle the screen before locking it down, but it is definitely going to work better in some cars than others.

    2 things that Alpine needs to improve. Coming from an owner of this HU.
    1) 2 USB ports... Excuse me Alpine!.. but WHY is there only 1 USB port in a $900 head unit? Really Alpine? Was it THAT difficult to add 2?! Kenwood, Pioneer, Sony, JVC have 2 USB ports even on $300-$400 base units. If they did it, ALPINE CAN DO THAT AS WELL!
    2) Why on God's earth, would they make the strip wire and position it in a location (when connect brains and screen) so easily to puncture with a screw when securing the unit during final assembly! To anyone who will install this... BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL when attaching screen to the brains. If you put a screw through that strip wire... you are done!

    • @crutchfield
      @crutchfield  Před 3 lety

      Unfortunately the Alpine Halo9 ILX-F309 does not fit the 2011 Cadillac CTS coupe . It doesn't fit because we don't have a dash kit to make it fit in the factory radio opening properly. With the floating screens like this one, it has to be anchored down properly so that it doesn't fall out of your dash. It's not that it won't physically fit, we just don't carry a dash kit to make it secure in the dash.

      The Alpine's iLX-F309's rear-panel HDMI input can be used to connect select Android or Apple iOS devices with video output to the digital media receiver. With the vehicle's parking brake engaged you can mirror the smartphone device's image and watch stored video and video apps (like CZcams) on the digital media receiver's touchscreen monitor.

      Great point, Ken. I just ordered the Sony XAV-AX5000 from Crutchfield for $429. My car is a 2008 SAAB 9-5 with a premium GM head unit with a huge volume knob, which is appreciated.
      I decided to bite the bullet and get the Sony because almost all of my volume duties are on the steering wheel. That said, I will miss all of the real, tactile buttons. Hopefully the Bluetooth, three cameras, SiriusXM with their 300 tuner, and other goodies will make me forget all of my previous features.

    I made the mistake of buying one of these. Worst Alpine head unit I've owned in 35 years. The volume buttons are infuriating. They don't work if your fingers are dirty or oily and only work half the time when they are clean. Alpine's UI is awful and laggy. It's so ridiculously bad that I had to read the manual to learn how to set a radio station.
    Carplay works fine but it buries the audio and sub level controls under many layers of menus, defeating Carplay's ease of use and making it dangerous to use while driving. Nice job, Alpine.
    First time installers should beware of the ribbon cable on the back of the monitor should you need to slide it upwards to clear AC controls or whatever. When you slide the monitor up as designed, the ribbon cable folds itself neatly over a screw hole and it then becomes possible to run the "security screw" right through the cable. You cannot see this happen because the monitor blocks your view of it and the final plastic trim piece still fits with the cable under it. You can literally spend hours installing this thing and destroy it on the very last step. It's one of the most piss poor designs I've seen in 35 years of installing. Thankfully, I was warned as you have now been.
    Also, no thief is getting this out of the dash unless he knows exactly what he is doing. It will get destroyed and everyone will lose in the end.
    Don't buy this.
