The pro-Hitler/Mussolini comments by Churchill have to be put into context. A the time, many people in Europe in the 1930's feared Stalinism/Leninism more than they feared Fascism. Communists nationalize property & industry & get rid of religion. The true horrors of Nazism became apparent during the blitz & when the concentration camps became liberated...it's commendable that Mark has the courage to provide these lessor known obscure comments made by Churchill, & then to let us make up our own minds.

Historically Chamberlain gets a very bad wrap, not least of which is dealt by Winston Churchill in his very unkind memoirs. Neville Chamberlain was a very accomplished politician both domestically and internationally and in fact after their meetings Hitler raged at his assistants that Chamberlain had in effect "scammed " him. Chamberlain may well have been guilty of being a touch naïve when it came to Hitler , but at the very least he garnered another crucial eighteen months for the UK armed forces to rebuild. I can refer you to a very concise documentary on Neville Chamberlain that is very illuminating.

Remember Gallipoli, his plans to attack the Soviet Union invading Norway in support of Finland, the useless campaigns at Greece and Crete, the fruitless slaughter at Italy, the confidence abuse in Market Garden and how Churchill agreed the plans of Stalin to subjugate Eastern Europe in exchange of absolutely nothing for the UK or nobody else.

I know this story and remember it well. We had to read it in the English classes of my Dutch school all the way back in 1963. The story was in Churchill´s own words so I suppose it was a quote from his memoires. I also remember Churchill writing¨ this was the only time me and herr Hitler had an opportunety to meet. Later on too much had happened and a meeting would have been improper and out of the question.¨Thanks for reviving these lessons , illustrated as always with great photo material. Now I am still curious...who was the Dutchman Hitler was talking to in the door opening of his Munich home?

I still think the most interesting meeting between Churchill and another WW2 leader was the meeting with Irish PM De Valera.
They spent the entirety of WW2 at each other throats; sending personal messages back and forth threatening to go to war at each other. (but never meet each other during WW2)
And then they just randomly bump into each other at a party one day after WW2, and De Valera finally realizes Churchill's animated personality and that De Valera should not have taken Churchill that seriously during WW2 and that's the way Churchill was towards everyone, even his friends.

THANKS. Great vid. I love your descending into the Winston Drawl, as I call it. It is the easiest British accent to affect. I once used it (causing offense) in a deans' meeting with our Welsh provost (this is in Pennsylvania) when I associated my stint as the cabinet secretary with Winston's well-known dict: 'History will not look kindly on poor Neville. I know, because I'm going to write it.' The Brits are prickly about attempts to mimic them.

''F.D.R and Mussolini writing each other''
Nice out of context bullshit there, Mussolini wrote frequently to FDR seeing as a lot of Italian immigrants had recently moved there and he wished for them to be properly taken care of.
''had a lot of positive comments about A.H. in Life magazine.''

Hi Mark - I’ve been really enjoying your videos lately, thanks for the great content. I would love to see you discuss Henry Tandey sparing Hitler’s life in WWI. To my limited knowledge, this is an extremely compelling story that is of dubious historical veracity at best. I’d love to hear you discuss the evidence for and against it, and recall how the story came about in the first place.
