I thought the History Channel (or its second incarnation -- History Channel 2) already did a story on the Swiss assassin. It was a chapter in its Hitler's Bodyguard series.
I was lucky enough to have a great history teacher for 6 years, this channel is carrying on where my education ended.

I was fortunate enough to have a father who was in Holland as a child and witnessed portions of the war as a child, He came to Canada and taught World War II history and amassed quite a collection of books and information. He recently passed away and I inherited his collection and interest in this history. These channels fill in details not found in the usual literature sources.

I have never heard the name Maurice Bavaud before,even though I know about Bormann's tactic to buy out local residents to enlarge the security perimeter. This is what makes your channel(s) so dear to me; you always have a surprise at hand, about things I thought I already new a lot about...

@@palomino73 in at least one case Boorman did indeed send a landowner to Dachau for a couple months. If there were more, who knows, although the huge sums of money and the fear of what would happen if they didn't sell...well I doubt there were any others who refused. Dr Felton covers this in one of his videos about the Berghoff.
I am so happy that the CZcams censors haven't banned these videos for showing swastikas and mentioning Nazis or Hitler.

No they still do. I had an R/C tank video taken down on another channel (one is still up ironically). The video had been on YT for 10 years. The only Swastika was on a Navy flag at the beginning. There was no hate speech just a model tank with Panzer Lied in the background. It was filmed by an Englishman in Wales ffs. That song is still used by many tank units around the world today and was used in the Battle of the Bulge movie. It was not a Nazi song. Unfortunately YT has their own secret police that don't know much about history or indeed anything else.

Here's a dark thought: Just about every bit of information about what Bavaud did in this video came directly from his torture.

Just thought I'd mention, as Albert Speer was mentioned, that in the loft of a house my sister was living in in Portsmouth, they found a whole load of architectural plans and drawings. When they were analysed they turned out to be the plans and drawings Albert Speer had made for Berlin for after WW2. They fetched a few thousand at auction if I remember correctly. How they got there in the first place wasn't entirely clear.
Those will end up being worth a lot more one day

The idea of Hitler using public paths here shocks me. Really lax...shame nobody took him out.
This guy was literally camping out for 2 days and practicing his marksmanship. Nobody heard anything? no security detail combed through that area I guess?

One thing about why his gunshots went unheard. A 6.35mm pistol, aka .25 auto, is extremely small and underpowered. Though it was considered adequate in the early 1900s, it would definitely take a well placed shot to deliver a lethal blow at greater distances than say 15 feet, or ~4.5 meters. It's also very quiet compared to your standard military pistol or rifle, though still audible. It's likely that nearby residents/guards could mistake it for a far off shot, if noise would carry that far at all in a dense forest in hilly/mountainous terrain. Just thought I'd throw that out there
Edit: if he was concerned with his shooting, it was likely the absolutely puny pistol he was trying to use as an assassins weapon which offers little in terms of accuracy
There is a video by Dr. Felton where he says that Hitler carried a 6.35mm Walther PPK. I wonder if it is known what model of gun Bavaud had. I have a Mauser 1910 in 6.35.

Not exactly the smartest guy. Travelling on a train without a ticket while carrying with him a pistol and a forged letter. Thats kind of like asking for trouble.

Distressed people, personally emotionally driven, all too typically do not plan well and act rashly. The professional sniper or assassin treats a killing as a job. Beyond professional pride they are not emotionally involved.

This will add to the "recklessness" of inspired operators. Who needs a great plan, when God is your copilot.

"It's a small world, isn't it?" goes a line from the song, and it is remarkable how few degrees of separation one can have from notable (and notorious) people and events. One of my clients some years back was Wolf von dem Bussche, a local Berkeley photographer of some note, whose first cousin, Axel von dem Bussche, was the principal actor in one of the plots to assassinate Hitler. The plot failed, as they all did, but he survived to tell the tale.

Any chance you can do a video on the polizei 35th ss grenadier division ? My great grandfather was a German police officer in Berlin for 15 years before the war and was annexed into this division where he served as a something like an MP / quartermaster. He was in near Pilsen when they broke away from the check uprising and escaped the Russians to surrender to the allies . A few days later he was told to cut the bolts off of his arm because they were being handed over to the Russians. He nearly died in captivity at a salt mine . Released in 1949 he lived out his days near the Rhine river in Berlin . I would love to learn more about his division and anything else pertinent to the Czech uprising (as the Russians closed in from the east) thank you for all your great videos Dr Felton !

Mark, another fine episode, thank you. Your opening comments put me on mind of who introduced AH to the area - as you obviously know, Eckhart. From there I recalled Hanfstaengl. Both of these characters would make for fascinating listening (The 'piano player' book has some great information, but it's style leaves a lot to be desired). The young Swiss man had an ambitious plan and had an opportunity to execute it, despite the challenges. The 15ft distance from the target, the risk to hit other people, as well as his inexperience should not have stopped him from carrying out the plan. Being an under-resourced team of one assassin against a heavily protected statesman, it's a huge miscalculation to assume he'd have another opportunity to kill Hitler. His weapon of choice was not appropriate to shoot at long range to begin with.
Do you remember what kind of damage the assasin did by shooting at Ronald Reagan and a Secret Service Agent and a Police Officer (the assasin had used a 0.22 calibre Revolver)?

Hi don't forget the Beer Hall bomb attempt on Hitler in November 1939. When Hitler mysteriously left early before it went off. I can't remember name of the assassin but he was caught and ended up usual way executed in 1945.i think.
I believe it was George Elsner.
That's right I think he was a watch maker. I read there was mystery why the security forces kept him alive for so long.
