I'm normally not the most nostalgic person, but The Hives are one of the few groups from my middle school years, right around the time that I started listening to material outside of mainstream radio, that I genuinely get that feeling. It certainly doesn't hurt that they put out a song THIS great in the year 2023.

My aunt made me a mixtape when I was a kid that had a bunch of shit on it (Hives, Misfits, early White Stripes, Rancid, I can't remember what else) but my favourite off of that was always The Hives and I've been listening to them ever since. Tyrannosaurus Hives and Veni Vidi Vicious I listened to continuously in early HS. Man, I'd love to find that tape again...

Saw these guys last Friday supporting Arctic monkeys. Pelle whacked himself in the face with the mic bad, blood all down his face, carried on absolutely legendary! Have a new fan in me ❤️❤️

Instant classic. The Hives do what they do so well that I think it's easy to miss how much effort it takes to look and sound this effortless. They have spent the past decade honing these new tracks into killing machines. To paraphrase Pelle, we're gonna die.

I remember being around 20 years old and hearing/seeing Main Offender for the first time on the music channel 'Q' and thinking what the fuck is this? (in a good way). I'd never even heard of The Hives and Hate to say I told you so had completely passed me by. Loved them instantly. But, life took its toll on me 😂, I aged and they disappeared from the scene. Then, a couple of months ago I took my daughter to see the Arctic Monkeys at Hillsborough Park, not even knowing who was supporting them 😂. Best surprise ever. They were absolutely fantastic. Anyway, that's my life story.
This and QOTSA's new song is giving me the life I needed.

@@zeusarts_illustration yeah, it often goes bad, but stagnation is worse than trying something new and failing, imo. Imagine if The Beatles, David Bowie, or Radiohead stuck to their original sound.
The Hives are a fun, light hearted band. They can stick to one sound because they don't have much musical ambition. They have one goal, and that's to be fun. But if you're a band that wants to make a deeper connection or make people feel something profound, you have to explore and broaden your musical goals.
