- R.I.P. Ron who died yesterday. Mike Porter kindly informed me this morning and I'm sharing the sad news with all of you. It's purely because of him that I progressed as I did, having watched a Video tape of him teaching in the Wye Valley many years ago. His books are legendary as is his no nonsense method.
Many thanks Ron!

I am so sorry to hear of the death of Ron Ranson. He was my first 'workshop' teacher and helped me lay the groundwork as a successful, self-taught, painter and teacher. No matter which way my learning pushed me, my Hake brush was always in the brush container. When illness and physical disabilities kept me away from painting for six years, once I started to heal again, I returned to painting with the Hake. In 2014 I turned out over 100 paintings and sold them to raise money for the poor and homeless in our community. Without the large Hake brush, I could not have done the job. The two workshops I took from Ron in 1997 and 1998 were educational, of course, but also great fun. He was a great man and his legacy has influenced thousands of people worldwide.
Like the tribute, and I think old Ron pulled something special out of you for this one. He'll be much missed - I took to the hake some years ago, like many had trouble with it, but then realized or learned that the secret was not to use it when it was sopping wet - after that, it just worked for me. This demo made me want to get the brush out again and get busy on a bit of watercolour paper.
This news saddens me greatly, as I'd studied with Ron for four years (2000-2004). I regarded him as one of most important mentors. My heart goes out to Darlis and his family. Rest in peace, Ron. You were a true gentleman.
I join with you and show solidarity with Ron Ranson. He certainly had a fruitful life and left us all a wonderful legacy. R.I.P. Ron, and thanks Dave for continuing in his line. It is a good thing that there are people like you in this world.
Very sad to see the news that Ron has recently passed away. I was fortunate enough to work with him in when he was in industry in South Wales . I was aware at the time that he painted and decades later when I took up the brush found out how famous he actually was. He certainly influenced me as do others who paint in the same style.
David, Ron would be delighted to see your painting. I see it for him this evening. My father and I were very close. Thank you for your lovely tribute and I look forward to sharing your video with my Mother Darlis.Warm regards, Diana Fontaine
Thanks for the tribute to Ron Ranson. He was a great contributor to the arts. You are lucky to have personally known him. I admire your other acknowledgements of other like minded artists. Yes, just a bit more Sienna grasses in the lake edges and it would be in my back yard here in Canada about a week ago before the snow.
Thanks Dave, lovely tribute to Ron Ranson. so generous of you to share this with us all.
OMG I can't believe it...I was at his house 4? years ago in Oregon...Lovely man and his wife is just as nice as can be. She must be devastated....I'm so sorry. RIP Ron....
Thanks for sharing Dave. I only heard yesterday about his passing and my deepest sympathies are with his family and friends. Ron's books were a great influence on my own work and my teaching methods, so I have much to be grateful for, to fulfill my life long ambition of becoming an artist. Though I never met Ron I feel the loss as if he were family. RIP Ron Ranson
Great tribute to a great painter. He was also largely responsible to my success at painting in watercolour as well. He has left us all with a great method of expression. His instruction through his books, seminars, and dvds has helped so many of us doubters like myself become true artists and prove to ourselves we can do it. Gone but not forgotten. Thanks for the tribute Dave.
Sad news Dave, but his memory and his name will live on. Lovely job Dave.
Thank you for this lovely painting in memory of Ron Ranson, Dave. I thank both you and Steven Cronin, who steered me towards the marvel of painting watercolours in the style of Mr. Ranson. Very sad to hear of his passing.
R.I.P Ron. A beautiful tribute to a great hake brush artist. I just finished my first hake brush painting today and just the day before he passed I ordered several of his books. Thanks Dave for the beautiful work you do. I really enjoy watching and learning from your videos.
Thank you for another great video. I was sorry to hear about Mr Ranson, I enjoy using his hake too.
I hope your chest improves soon, and your grandson's too, and hope your cracked rib is healing nicely.
a beautiful tribute David, im sure Ron RAnson would agree, with me, thanks for sharing, have a lovely weekend
Thank you for this tribute and demo. I've been a keen follower of Steve Cronin's work and learned an awful lot. I came across this demo accidentally and I didn't know Ron Ranson had died. He was an inspiration to many. Looking forward to watching more of your work. Thank you again for the lovely painting.
Love this Dave. Jumping on the Patron 1st of the month. Ty for sharing your time,Art and skill. Really means a lot to me.
thank you Dave for sharing your memories, as you painted your tribute to Ron, to know the effect he had for water colour artist who followed his idea and progressed to their own style. It is a lovely painting. Caz
I think Ron Ranson would be very proud of that painting, Dave.

It's a great tribute to a master, it's a wonderful piece Dave, thanks for sharing your thoughts, sentiment and technique.
Thanks for letting us know Dave I loved his work and he introduced me to the hake after watching a video of his as I was having trouble holding small brushes
I didnt realise he had passed away 😞 rip . I am getting back to watercolours after a huge time & am struggling & i owned his book years ago & just googled his name to see this . I am so sorry . A good teacher 🙏 god rest his soul 🙏🙏🙏😞
It is a hake brush Ron used. I took two conferences with him, Mary Conroy Toronto, On.
Hi Dave, many thanks for this watercolor in memory of Mr Ron Ranson. Very beautiful, he must be happy.
Sad to hear about Ron,i read loads of his books and watched videos from my libraryand decided his style of painting was just for me.Your painting and other works are a fine tribute to him Dave.
I have watched your tribute several times now. You and Steven turned me on to Ron about 8 months ago and I've since purchased about 8 of his books. Ron also added burnt sienna to his palette by the time Skies was written it seems. He has an unimaginably lasting legacy in all of us who wield the hake brush. I always enjoy your footage and commentary. He was a watercolour giant for sure and was already a living legend many years before his passing.
Thanks, Dave.
Also, his videos are still available, though who knows for how long from APV. I myself beat the rush and already ordered the two that my library lacked.
'Mud is a popular colour...' no wonder I seem drawn to it all the time!! (: (: Thanks for this video.
I received my first hake brush yesterday. RIP Ron. Thank you Dave.
Sorry to read those bad news.... R.I.P. Mr. Ranson
Thanks god we have an honourable disciple like you.
ah sad to find out about Ron. Anyway were still here and we carry on living and enjoying life and I'm glad I found your channel! only hope I can paint as lovely as you one day!
You did Ron proud, Dave
Thanks Paul. :)
Very beautiful painting Dave. Kinda looks like the marshes of southwest England.
Just watched this Dave. A nice tribute to a man who greatly influenced us all. I'll mention this tribute to his wife, Darlis. Thanks so much.
Forgot to mention that I sent the link to this video directly to his wife, Darlis.
Good job, Dave. A wonderful tribute to the old master! I can't explain why, but something made me get out my old Ron Ranson books and have a look at the old videos this weekend. I was thinking of trying to reach Mr. Porter to enquire how Ron was doing, when I saw your announcement. Very sad news, for us anyway, but I am certain he enjoyed a good life, doing what he loved. He surely brought us joy. I am still there--same Cotman paints, same brushes, and I'm sticking with them. I don't have that type of tray but a large, rectangular white plastic low-sided box with a lid, although I use stretchy cling film on top. Anyway, I also hope you get to feeling better soon. You've had a rough week! Just take it easy. Good luck with the Christmas tree and the cat.
Margaret, my email is tmikeporter@gmail.com if you'd like to contact me. That goes for any of you. Cheers.
Good video, Dave.
RIP Ron Ranson.
Dave,
Ron would've been ecstatic over this painting. Clean and simple with no "fiddling" (overworking) as he called it. Thanks!
Thanks Dave, that was very nice. Hope you are feeling better. Take care
