      Well put. 883 stripped to its essence. Less parts than a push lawn mower from Wal Mart. Although an Arlon Ness BIG SUCKER would def bump up the torque a little. That breather looks restrictive some.

    Fantastic machine. I think you have it idling around 600 or maybe 550 rpm. I know the engine will run at 450 rpm. However, anything below 900 rpm is not good for the big end bearings of the connecting rods. The engine jerks the bearings to strongly at low rpm. If you like to rebuild engines then continue the 550 rpm, it sure sounds sweet to my ear.
    Have you ever noticed the rubber pucks in the rear "cush drive". The rubber is there because an all metal rear drive can transmit shock waves via the final drive chain or belt that sends the shock of contact metal on metal back to the con-rods big ends and lead to early failure.

    • @wizrom3046
      @wizrom3046 Před rokem +5

      It's probably dumb to argue with a 5 yr old post, but what you said is an old wives tale.
      The stresses on the crank and big end at idling (even jerky idling) is MANY times less than the normal stresses exerted on the crank and rods at higher RPMs, especially high power output high rpms like hard acceleration.
      Sorry but it is just not true, you can set the idle as low as you like.
      Also, there is another old wives tale about top end oil pressure being too low at low rpm idling, this is also not true. The top end rockers at low rpm barely need any oil at all. Many farm harleys used in water pumps run for decades with no oil pump system, the farmer just squirts an oil can in the top of fhe engine every couple of weeks and it dribbles through and out the bottom. Low rpm, low power use is extremely gentle and barely needs a whiff of oil. Engine wear and damage occurs at high rpms, especially with high torque loads at high rpms.

    Laury Lafluer: Sorry, but, you are in error, in stating that the bike shown, at least, on this video is a Shovelhead. The bike shown is indeed an Ironhead, Sportster. You can see the right hand final, chain drive, whereas, the big Twin Shovelheads, had a left hand final chain drive. You can also see the smaller primary drive on the right side, on this Sporty, as opposed to the larger primary drive housing, on the big Twin Shovelheads. The Cylinders or barrels where indeed made of Iron, and the Heads, where made of aluminum. The two different metals, expanded and contracted, with heat, at different rates, and were thus, known to cause oil leakage, on the base gasket, and thereby, "marked their territory."Just saying.

    • @l.t.keefer9310
      @l.t.keefer9310 Před 7 lety +4

      they are called Ironheads because of the heads being iron, but they are still a shovelhead Sportster with same style rocker cover as the big twin shovelhead. Shovelhead and Ironhead is just nicknames but big twin and Sportster were considered Shovelheads. some even call them ironshovels

      Some call ironheads shovelhead sportsters. I don't know how correct is that... somehow I remember that shovelhead nickname was to just for big twins, but we should remember that shovelhead valvebox is a copy of sportster, not vice versa. Sportster ironhead valve cover was born in 1957 or -56, whereas big twin shovel valvebox was born in -66 or -67, so ten years later

    • @foreverfree6685
      @foreverfree6685 Před 6 lety +2

      there's multiple signs to show differences, your rocker boxes on a iron head and a shovel are totally different laury lafleur is a idiot.
      The ironhead was a Harley-Davidsonmotorcycle engine, so named because of the composition of the cylinder heads (Iron instead of Aluminium). The engine is a two-cylinder, two valves per cylinder, pushrod V-twin. It was produced from 1957 until 1985 and was replaced by the Evolution engine in 1986.
      This name was applied to the Harley-Davidson Sportster motorcycles that used this engine.
