Jari's style: majestic, storytelling
Alexi's style: badass, cool
I consider both of them metal guitar gods of our generation.
Jari should be considered one of the world's greatest guitarists, he's insane and quite the artist
Alexi for me... but not worth fighting over this.... both are godlike guitarists.
wrong
@@I2yantheGreat you mean wong.
I really enjoy both players as a both a listener, composer, and player.
I think Jari has a better palette to go from super simple to ultra technical than CoB. For the simple fact that Jari is writing musical pieces(no limitations) and Alexi/Janne strive to create good songs. That being said they both dip into each others territory a good percentage of the time in these projects, but I think it does set a "mood" for the ideals when coming to that point where its like "This would be a great spot for a solo" or the internal cue/want/need for a solo.
I love both forms of creation, one has no limits and can produce beautiful(and diluted) pieces. The other can be like a producer and trim the fat of the piece and try to work within some guidelines, which there is an art in itself to working within these guidelines that I enjoy as again, a listener, composer, and player.
Even though most ppl I know jumped ship on CoB post Hatecrew Deathroll, I actually enjoy "some" of the riffs, and most of the solos. I hear a lot more of the Steve Vai influence in his later solos which was always something I enjoyed in his playing, I thought if Steve ever had the real conviction to do metal, and be serious, this is a similar form of what I'd actually expect from him. Obviously Alexi's older material was from him as a younger player, and very enthusiastic and energetic style, even his work with Sinergy showed this same energy. The Wylde/Friedman pentatonic style is prominent. Murray/Smith-esque maiden mashup solo style is also a big part of his early and late playing. And of course we cant forget guys he mentions repeatedly in media, Holmes(W.A.S.P.) and Jabs/Roth/Schenker(The Scorpions) for the simple yet big stadium-style lead parts. Then we cant forget the Becker influence for creative shapes and execution on sweeps. Sweeps are so easy to drive yourself into a boring or exercise-centric hole of a sound, and I think they are both able to keep them in the cool tricks or cool sound dept quite well.
Jari on the other hand, didnt skip a beat from what style he was secluded to inside the industry. Ensiferum. Most of Wintersun sounds like that folk metal style with his obvious personal touches, the programmed style/black metal drumming(Arthemesia comes to mind), the eastern scales, the pentatonic played Japanese, even the simplicity used repetitively with nuance changes just feels personal but familiar. All of these things I think add to the "epicness" of Jari's solos. It's clear as day that Vivaldi and Beethoven are giant influences on both players, and they cater their styles to this neoclassical catalyst. But as for technique I think the Friedman Japanese pentatonic shows its head more often than most with his playing in Wintersun. I would guess that Romeo's scale runs are prominent in his influences but that is a very diverse and lengthy field to choose from. I think his tone during some of these runs is what points me to Romeo, it could be incorrect though, so easily haha. Becker comment from before lol
After all that....I really dont think there is a single thing one player can do better than the other technically. They both showcase similar techniques and do them flawlessly when it matters most.
Their composition is where they differ yet they are quite similar.
I love both though and constantly pull both of their material back into my playlist on both my ipod and my protools session for playing along with.
Alexi is great but Jari Maenpaa is from a higher level ,more like a hybrid of Ynwie Malmsteen + Marty Friedman = pure speed + soulful .
worstformm is that a TIME joke or are you just stating that he is ahead of the time? :P
Jaris is cleaner and much more precise yet very predictable, but Alexi is more naturally gifted, & has an instinctual nack that he doesnt even understand, because hes just so fucking lazy, & never puts the work in that Jaris does.
@@raymondlacasse2407 I fail to see how you think Jari is predictable.
oh cmon. the kissing the shadows solo is amazing. one of my favorites
Death and the Healing solo. Game over COB.
Wintersun by far. Alexi's solos are good no doubt, But Jari's solos are not only more technically advanced but also seem to have more soul in them, like with Alexi sometimes it feels like his shredding is just noise. With Jari, it's purely musical. No hard feelings either way and respect for those who disagree :)
I feel the complete opposite. I feel like Alexi's solos always got perfectly in the song and are very melodic and full of feeling. Unlike other bands that just play fast. I agree Jari is amazing though.
In my oppinion, Wintersun's better because they have very complex solos and not just that, the "feeling" of the solos are very powerful to me. Children of bodom have very soulful solos as wintersun, the sadly thing here for them is that the solos are not more complex as wintersun's.
this is very true. years ago i used to be able to play so many children of bodom solos, but i was always perplexed trying to figure out wintersuns solos
Yeah, although, i think that bodom is not about the solos, more about the rythym. The rythym guitars in bodom songs are godly.
When did complex mean better?
And that’s the reason I like alexi more but I feel a lot of emotion in wintersun solos as well. They are both fantastic
Winter. Fucking. Madness.
MY two favorite BANDS. Great Vid!
Both incredible, Jari and Alexi!
Great guitar-only edit on Kissing the Shadows. Thanks for the vid!
Alexi Laiho is the modern age Vivaldi, but Jari Mäenpää is better than Vivaldi.
Both are amazing, but I must say I'm growing to LOVE Jari and Wintersun
Great showdown video - the best between these two guys I've seen so far - comparable solos pitted against each other unlike so many of these x vs. y vids. Great work!
GREAT VIDEO MAN !!!!
I love COB, and Alexi is a killer player, but Jari is a guitar-god.
God, I get goosebumps every time I hear Jari's solos. I've been listening to Wintersun for almost 10 years, and that hasn't changed once. It's glorious. I love COB, but they don't do that for me.
I like the video. You did a good job dude :)
I remember I checked out this video when I don’t have a CZcams account. Now I come back for it to give it a thumbs up
I'll go with wintersun just for winter madness thats too epic sorry for my poor english :$
No solo can compare to that of Winter Madness.
Sorry Alexi, you're good and I love you, but life is a bitch.
I think so. Winter Madness solo is quite incomparable!
Yep, Jari probably used up 50% of his muse in that solo, probably why Time and Forest Seasons is only semi good
Time semi good? hell no , sons of winter and stars and time are some of jari's most finest works
I love the picture at 3:47 so much.
Adorable, they just look so genuinely happy to be playing for everyone.
Hey Im greatful that the man is taking so much time on his works, shows how serious he is about the quality of the stuff he releases! Even his demo songs are better than most!
love Alexi, but definetly Jari on this one
I grew up with COB but Jari is just out of this world :D
I love both bands, I can't hold one above the other - good collection of solos
It might have been a good idea to do simply a Jari VS Alexi video, as it's kinda what it is anyway. That way you could have included some really interesting solos from Jari's time with Ensiferum.
Hard to believe it's already been over 10 years since I first listened to Children of Bodom, and after all that time I still get shivers from these insane melodic solos on the first three albums. That being said, everything they recorded after Follow the Reaper never gave that kind of feeling.
I like Laiho's style a lot more - his solos just nail it, they're so accurate and concrete, enthralling, transfixing. They make the track just worth listening. And his solos sound more to be in minor (diminished) - I don't like major particularly .And I think that Laiho's solos fit the songs better than Jari's.
Though I must admit I do like Winter Madness' solo too.
Cant deny the guitar gods in Jari, but im all into Alexi melodies..Ton of guitarist sounds similar to Jari, nobody else sounds like Alexi.
"nobody else sounds like Alexi."
And neither did Alexi, because he couldn't fucking play 95% of the shit he wrote live. He had a great style, but you're kidding yourself if you think he was any more unique than Jari is.
Thanx man!!! \,,/
unas de mis bandas favoritas, las mejores yo diria, tmb me gusta ensiferum, exelente video man
Children Of Bodom !!!!
to me Towards dead end > downfall
The actual reason why everything Järi does becomes instant marvel is the exquisite way he combines insanely complex techniques with extreme beautifuly melodic licks.
excellent choice of songs.
Jari domination! end
Alexi. Jari plays very fastly but unteresting for me, just bunch of arpeggios. Alexi has more classic and blues in his style. ;-P
Although Jari rules too. It's just for me to much fantasy :-D
Vladimir Devyatoff Well, the biggest problem is that you have a very large selection of Alexi's songs to choose from... They got 9 albums and Alexi himself has many "side songs" with other bands while Wintersun has only 1.5 albums (approx. 11 songs). Of course, you cannot even compare recent work from Jari and Alexi... Jari has gone a huge step forward while it goes opposite for Alexi.
@@SylarSilent I don’t see how your comment has anything to do with the fact that he never mentioned how many songs etc there is to choose from. He simply said Alexi writes more melodicly satisfying solos compared to Jari who is more or less just a bunch of fast notes and arpeggios. And I agree, I love Wintersuns music but I like the melodic solos ik COB better.
Also I don’t see why people actually compare the two. Totally different playstyles and subgenres in metal.
Dude! In the end took two of my favorite solos ever and made me decide which one i like best! That's mean!
the aweeps of beyond the dark sun are the most beautiful sweeps i have ever heard... but alexi has so fucking good writting and crazy stuff.... both are amazing
Oh.my 2 fav bands, I would like to say : Jari is a really better composer than Alexi, wintersun is really more technic and difficult , BUT, COB is really good , Allu and his band kicks ass , 2differents styles, but the best must be Jari and Allu together playin' in a band
This isn't worth fighting over.
agreed-Wintersun is a damn good band, but Alexi Laiho and Children Of Bodom rule the fucking universe!! \m/
SONDRA IACOBACCI I think this comment was meant the other way around, buddy. But good try
@@frankberg2426 nope, Sondra is right.
Just fyi, Alexi Laiho is also a composer. He composes most of the band's material and then they all help to arrange it.
same goes for Jari, my friend
I went to the comments expecting to see thousands of flame wars, but to my surprise, I see a lot of "Both are fucking great bands" even from people who still prefer one band or another.
I'm proud of you dear metalheads!
PD: Both are fucking great bands!
Jari is a better guitar player, songwriter and a better musician in every aspect. The emotion in Wintersun's music is beyond this world. Alexi is tremendous, too, but his music has gone downhill since FTR, even though I do enjoy all COB's albums. With that said, when I was younger I though that Jari's solos are just show-off sweeping, but when my ears developed during the years I understood what masterpieces for example Death and the Healing and Winter Madness-solos are.
As much as I adored the Kissing The Shadows solo in my early metal days, I now prefer the Winter Madness solo. This solo really showcases the...well, madness-aspect XD
An ad with a guy living ing a Macy's window... this worlds gone mad!
Kissinge the shadows . No more words
Both are just amazing. Anybody know similar bands to both of them? You know, power/black/majestic/epic/death/extreme/ metal? I know:
Kalmah
Wintersun
Children of Bodom
Never been able to find bands like them. Norther kind of sucks in my opinion.
Scar Symmetry
Solution .45
Primalfrost
Equilibrium
Disarmonia Mundi
Norther
Crimson Shadows
Gladenfold
Kambrium
Solamnia
Whispered
Starkill
Eternal Tears of Sorrow
Dark Tranquillity also
Give Carach Angren a go for sure. Im not a guy that like black metal very much. But holy shit Carach Angren is my favorite band after wintersun. They are very dark and symphonic. And if you are interested in lyrics, then carach angren is the right band for you, especially if you like darker lyrics.
Amon Amarth.
Insomnium
cant help but notice its only comparing to alexi's work from when he was a still basicly a kid XD the video doesnt even show his near fastest or crazier soloing, needless to say over the decades Alexi has gotten eons better so its a pretty danm obvious whos the top dog to me. XD jari's got accuracy and speed toward some sweeping but look at the work laiho does for anihhilator and tell me me isn't lord
Alexi is still a kid compared to Jari.
Jari is untouchable when it comes to the musicality, originality and technicality BUT Alexi embodies rock n roll.
Both of them are awesome and amazing, you know.
I like them both, but wintersun and Jari literally has no bad songs. Every-fucking-song he makes is THE best song, if you know what i mean.
I would have to go with jari, I love Alexi laiho and children of bodom but Jari's solos are more diverse I feel, if that makes sense.
Just gonna toss a point out there, Alexi's solos are from 3 different albums on here, Jari's are all from one. That could sound like a good point for Jari, but I'd like to see how far his creativity will go in his albums to come. If he can keep it up, then good on him. But, the fact remains that Alexi has been producing quality shred for 7+ albums now.
love em both
Jari, for sure
Jari is a God of finnish metal!!!
totally right ;) !
support your point !
I think they both are just fantastic :)
Hi Jari, Guys here! You win, 'cause you're so goude.
This was never even a battle.
the organized chaos that jari can produce does not really compare to anyone.
When guitar players get to this skill level it's honestly only people's bias that makes them choose between them. Besides, I highly doubt any of you are good enough of guitar players to understand the difficulty differences; I sure as hell can't! Their both incredible players and all I can say is ROCK ON!
I think both bands are just great. All the solo's of both bands are beautiful.
I was a rabid COB fan in my younger days but as I got older and my music taste matured I leaned more towards Wintersun (especially their latest material) and I think that would've happened even sooner if Jari released more material by now.
The thing is you have a very large selection of Alexi's songs to choose from... COB have 9 albums and Alexi himself has many "side songs" with other bands while Wintersun has only 1.5 albums (approx. 11 songs). Of course, you cannot even compare recent work from Jari and Alexi... Jari has gone a huge step forward while it goes opposite for Alexi.
Wintersun are releasing a new album in July! :)
methinks both rolls like a boss... Of course not, JARI IS GOD lmL
Both kickass !
Thank you for that last statement! Took hours to make!! Days I think!!
I'd like to see Kalmah's Antti Kokko in the battle too.
Wintersun > COB....that being said, Roope is quite good but COB's music doesn't really showcase his talents.
Wintersun hands down. Beyond the Dark Sun and Winter Madness's solos are two perfect reasons why. Both min+ solos full of pure PWN. WIN
Have to say that both are amazing. But I've always been a COB fan, so I say that they are the bests (I especially love the solo of "the nail"). But I admit that Wintersun's solos are all insane ^^
I feel more emotion in Alexi’s solos, Jari however I don’t really "feel" the same emotion of epicness I do with Alexi’s playing.
I feel just the opposite :D
Totally .. Alexi solos are just emotional to me and legendary masterpiece I don’t know how a human brain could compose those.
Jari Mäenpää..
Winter Madness and Kissing the shadows truly are the masterpieces of guitar solos.
both of them are fuckin' great!
I love Alexi more than my own life but Jari is much better in every aspect!!!
Since COB is Melo Death and Wintersun is Melo Black, you can only judge them against each other by solos. Nothing else. With that being said, I've watched plenty of Wintersun and COB videos and there is much more that goes into Jaris work rather than Alexis. So I'm going Wintersun.
+Toki Wartooth but Alexi is just naturally better.... hes just kind of lazy lol, if he put in the work that Jaris did it would be crazy
+Toki Wartooth Wintersun Meloblack? wtf dude?
***** That's just ignorance.
teepeek Melodic Black metal
mxmeta Viking metal is melodic death metal. Plus, thats not how sub genres are determined.
Wintersun - all solos are almost the same, sweep, sweep, slide to higher fret, sweep, sweep, sweep, slide to lower fret, and the same, and the same.
Children Of Bodom - melody, every solo have other melody, many techniques, each solo is great. Alexi is an true artist in my opinion.
Alexi wins !
Jari is a god of guitar, and Alexi is the essence of metal, and they are both equal in my opinion. Jari can play some fast, insane, and melodic solos, and Alexi's solos just appeal to my ear. They are my two absolute favorite musicians of all time, and are more than a match for each other, in different styles
Alexi is great, but Jari is like the Mozart of metal and he's better on the stage aswell
I think Alexi is better. He has been playing like that even before turning 15 and by 2000 (Alexi being 21 years old) he has released three masterpieces whereas Jari has taken A LOT to produce more albums. Not saying Jari sucks or anything like that. Both are incredibly good guitar players but in my opinion Alexi is better.
Two of my favourite men in Metal.
Kissing the shadows solo is unreal xD and it bring memorys when i trained to play it. Jari`s sweeping sounds cool too.
You guys are comparing apples and oranges here. Jari is one of best musicians in the world today. Can he shred a guitar? Hell yes! But, is that his focus? I think not. He has more important "fish to fry".
Alexi's job is to shred the freck out of a guitar and, he does his job exceptionally well.
As far as the original question goes.... I would say that Alexi can play a better solo on stage but, Jari is by far the better musician.
exactly, now i start to see cob fans just like tallica/deth fans, unwilling to open up
Spot on Jake, if anything Wintersun is ridiculously clean live.
No way! Alexi Laiho is an amazing guitarist but he can also be really sloppy live. Jari however, is one of the tighest, most talented and skilled metal guitarists live that there is. Honestly just watch live performances of Winter Madness or Sons of Winter and Stars and compare it to the entire CoB Chaos Ridden years gig. No contest.
Dale Subic having seen both of these bands live and only barley listening to Wintersun before seeing them I was in awe of the guitarist throughout the whole gig. Alexi although being that of one of the greatest frontmen to grace a stage was sloppy in comparison.
Jari.! Incomparable.
It's very difficult for a lot of guitarists to even come near Jari's level of guitar technique. The man is a damn genius.
kissing the shadows - greatest solo ever!
Jari solos impress me with their technicality, but to me they often kinda 'overplayed', sometimes they get too chaotic and complicated, still clean, precise and melodic, though. Alexi solos just make me close my eyes, headbang and enjoy their easy-going, badass yet melodic feeling. When I hear Alexi solo my inner guitarplayer mostly rests and chill, but listener enjoy every second of his shredding. Alexi for me!
I honestly can't choose one over the other. They're both great and sound very close but in their own unique way of course. Both have very good musicianship
My 2 favourite groups.... I can't choose one... 50/50!!! ^^
amen!
the two most amazing bands ever!
Agreed!
Jari's playing still gives me chills. I love both but Jari's work has more musicality
Personally, Wintersun holds a special place in my heart.
That said, I love the work of BOTH bands.
Wintersun solos are so dramatic, like "Yes, I CAN devourer your soul!"
COB solos are energetic, like "Let's kick some fucking shit, hell ya!"
These are my two favourite bands - I much prefer Alexi for his compositions, riffs and melodies (he is my favourite guitarist) but the solos Jari creates, event though Alexi's are amazing, are incredible. They combine such strong feeling and shredding.
Alexi Laiho without a shadow of a doubt! Specially that DeadNight Warrior solo👹 Alexi solos are based on very mastering of Musical laws & techniques.
pure mind explotion. two are awesome bands cant wait, for the time album, or till bodom makes up for blooddrunk-.-
I can't chose :'( They are so perfect ....
