How to Practice the Presence of God

  • Throughout the Gospels Jesus says, “Remain in me” or “abide in me,” which-in simplified terms-means whatever you do, invite Jesus along. Ask him to “come with.” This is a way to grow in your relationship with him, but it’s also a smart thing to do because, after all, Jesus said:
“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5).
When we ask someone to “come with” or “go with”, as Fr. Mike says they do in Minnesota, we are implying that we enjoy their company and even have a certain kind of love for them. When you love someone, you want them to come with you wherever you go.
But “remain in me” means more than that. It also means gaze upon Jesus, not just at his face in a religious icon-though that could help-but gaze upon him with the interior gaze of the heart. Be aware that he is present. This shouldn’t be burdensome. It’s simple. Spending time with one you love is as easy as doing nothing.
Thirdly, remaining in Christ means to speak to him. Tell him your dreams and desires. Ask him what he wills. When you do this keep in mind, the Lord is free. He is not robotic. He is free to love us as he wills, and sometimes that love is difficult-but it’s what we need.
So next time you do something, anything, say, “Jesus, wanna go with?”

@@ZzzoneOut It’s quite postive, actually being precise about the nature and process of reasoning. So no need to worry about my state of cheerfulness.
The fact that it’s a joke doesn’t mean it jokes about it’s own presuppositions about the nature of reality so you’re barking up the wrong tree there.
Negative is when one is being overbearing and feeling the need to address other people as “chile”, to prop oneself up, while actually either missing the point or perhaps attempting to change the subject.

Actually, I like the answer, "Finally, thought you'd never ask."

It's quite easy to make difficult questions sound simple Dina, all you have to do is rationalize. Quite simple, begin with a feel good narrative like, oh I know, "There's a god who loves me" and then just listen to anything at all that supports that point and disregard anything that points in the opposite direction. Do this forever and you'll always be happy.

For what its worth, you have a solid run on the board and unfortunately, I find it difficult to hand those out on this thread. Still, well done you!

Tremendous. What a great day to begin my morning. Thank you. I love the three steps to how you invite someone to be present with you: 1. You ask them. 2. You gaze upon them or you give them your attention. 3. You speak to them. I have come to learn in recent years a fourth step which has become key to me in my relationship with Jesus, 4. You LISTEN to Him. In our speaking to God where we ask and seek direction and help, I have learned the value to stop and listen to Him in listening prayer. It doesn't make much sense to ask anyone for advice or help only to walk away without hearing what they may say to you. Live Fully, Mark

This is so easy and simply said it gives me a peace to be trusting and unafraid. Often we do not know what we need but GOD always does. Often I complicate GOD with my own damage that's why I like this Sooo much Thanks once again Father Mike 💜✝️💜

I was saved I guess earlier this year, round march. From out of the blue the local priest gave me a bible. I started reading and praying. I do it every day it feels very normal to me. Its very strange because I never thought about becoming a believer, God just came for me one day! After almost a year with christ I still cant believe how present he is. With me all day every day it comes so easy! I talk to him and ask if he can come with, but he always is.. Lot of feelings being new to this! But thanks for your work! / Robert, Sweden

  • @johnfitzsimmons3293

Jesus said he would be with us always until the end of time. When we ask fir him to come with, we are acknowledging that’s. It you look at children, or Adam and Eve, it is in our nature to hide when we do something wrong. By asking Jesus to be present, we are asking that he is present always, so all we do is for His honor and glory. Just as a child wouldn’t blatantly do something wrong in front of a parent, by acknowledging Christ’s present, we are less likely to do wrong, and more likely to do what He wills, more likely to love our neighbor as ourselves. It is actually a beautiful image to have God the creator of all, Jesus, who stepped in to take the punishment for our wrong doings, and the Holy Spirit to whom gives us the strength and knowledge to do God’s will, present in everything we do to work for Their honor and glory.
    How could we fail?
    Thanks for another great reflection.

This is so crazy. God is so good! I"m an inactive Mormon, turned Protestant, now investigating both Catholicism and Orthodoxy. The question of "How can I feel the presence of God." has been bothering me today and I've been praying to God and asking Him for an answer or insight into this question. I was totally not expecting Him to answer so quickly! Anyways, I haven't watched Ascension Presents videos in a while, but I just thought I'd watch a few to pass the time. I started watching one Fr. Mike video, and then this one was recommended up in the top lefthand corner. And what an answer to my prayer it is! Thank you for reminding me that this is a practice to get nearer to God, and not an overnight thing. Thank you! And I am so thankful to the Father for answering my question through a Fr. Mike video!

I was reminded about my Guardian Angel by a Canadian Priest ( exorcist, among other things ) who can see his Guardian Angel and talk to him.
He said your Guardian Angel is always there, just waiting to help you - you just need to ask.
I have been helped many times before I heard him say this, so I have really upped my asking. Always helps me!
But my prayer life is diminishing because of the illness I have, which causes exhaustion, brain fog and pain.
I try to pray, but cannot get enough energy to even think.
Thank you for this, Father, I will do this instead of formal prayers right now.
I feel no emotion as well ( flat - part of the illness ) so I am used to that.
But to ask God to come with - lying in bed, sounds like something I am able to do. Even just lying down.
He knows what I am going through.

When the Holy Spirit clearly clears my mind in order to put something in it He wants me to say or do, I often verbally acknowledge that and say thank you even when other people are around. Admittingly, I only really do it around believers but on the rare occasions that I do it reminds me of the seemingly crazy Irish guy from Braveheart and makes me smile. Brother Lawrence " Practice of the Presence of God " and Frank Laubach "Letters of a Modern Mystic" and " Games with minutes".
Frank Laubach wrote that while he was typing he sensed/felt Jesus' fingers IN his fingers........brilliant!! This takes attention and effort to keep this awareness all day, it's beautiful and simple, but it is not easy. This is why Frank wrote the book " Games with minutes " precisely as an exercise to see how often you can keep the Lord's presence in mind in a minute!!! Fantastic book btw, very short but very good...
Brother Lawrence held an interior conversation with Jesus as often as he could , asking the Lord for His blessing but also said his most common, usual way of being with God was the "interior gaze" within, knowing that God dwelt within his soul and this is where He was to be found!!! No words, just an interior awareness or " gaze " on his Beloved........to keep the Lord company in the interior depths of his soul, with the occasional " Jesus, I love You " to keep the flame of his love alive.
Two spiritual classics however I must say that I love Brother Lawrence and his method more and would highly, highly recommend this wonderful book, if you have never read it. It was written in the 1600's and has never been out of print. It has been translated into virtually every language under the sun and is the essence of what spirituality is all about.
Father Mike studied the greek and all the biblical nuances of remaining with Jesus and then explained that through his zoom group, one of the students boiled it down to " wanna go with "..... Brother Lawrence does this in his book and I thank the Good God everyday for this Carmelite mystic and his wonderful teaching!!!! Brother Lawrence, pray for us!!!

    Thank you, Father. I frequently ask our Lord to join me. Learned it from Exodu 33:13;
Moses to God "Now if indeed I have found favor in Your sight, please let me know Your ways, that I may know You and find favor in Your sight.” And the LORD answered, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” Once after Mass, there was a Christmas reception and I asked the Lord to join us. I got in line for the buffer. Then I turned around and there was a little girl with her mother waiting in line. I asked the little girl her name. She said the "Emmanuel." I knew it was HIM!!!! Jesus never refuses an INVIT. Amen

If God so wills it, I pray that He grant me strength of mind and body so I can work and be a conduit of God's blessings for my family. I pray that I don't infect any customers during this pandemic. Or if I do fall ill, I pray that God grant me the strength to bear it, and make my suffering mean something. I also thanked and praised him for the beautiful, calming sunset as I rode my bike home. Fr Mike, please talk about George Floyd this Sunday at Mass or make a video. Many of us are hurt, angry, and need guidance at this time for the injustice seen in your home state. Your preaching has always brought many of us closer to our faith. Please do it once more

On Monday Bishop Mark J. Seitz became the first Catholic bishop to publicly take the knee in symbolic recognition of racial injustice and police brutality in America. On Wednesday, Seitz received a call from Pope Francis, thanking him for speaking out and providing pastoral care during civil unrest in America.
I'm with you on this. It would be great if Fr. Mike made a video. Black Lives Matter and to stay silent on such injustice is doing Christ and his message a disservice. Peace to all.

Thank you Fr. Michael, it's true... I always have expected too much about that experience... actually, I think I have worked hard to much indeed, pretending to reach that truth that He propose in his Word... "how should be" or "how can I reach that" but along time I have learned that it is that simple, as God is simple... that He just is with us always, and that's all... that He loves me always in the present moment in the way He wants to and I need, that much as I need (as you said). It helps too much to make silence and discover that loving gaze fixed on us, but I think that happens when we stop pretending how should be and just let God being God. I ask you for a prayer for me, to be faithful to Jesus and don't lose Him so easily because of sin and my weakness. I believe He can transform us.

Happy bday! A priest once told us to pray specially with an open heart on our bdays because it’s a very important day that marks history he told us to ask God to heal us from anything that may be troubling us as individuals or as a linage (family tree) all together and to ask of deliverance of those bad things or habits, just some advice I thought could be useful enjoy ur Bday and may the lord bless you and protect u on ur special day! :)

Hi Fr MikeThis reminds me of (and have you ever noticed this with others..) when ever I do something I say “okay now we’re going to do such and such...or now we place this over there (to accomplish whatever it is..) and I had someone from my old neighborhood - a childhood friend- tell me, (many years ago) “ no you have to say “I’m going to do such and such! Not We are going to do such and such! She didn’t know...and she used to go to our church!
I see the “we” description used a lot on you tube when people are demonstrating (especially on some cooking videos!) and I think to myself I wonder if they really know who the We in their “we” that they are talking about!
    Great topic! Thanks! God Bless!

Then out of nowhere it suddenly occurred to me that God is sitting beside me whilst we are watching your video together. Goosebumps! ❤️
