Make Small Sacrifices for a Big Change

  • Making small sacrifices is not just for Lent, because sacrifices and penance are necessary. As Christ said:
“If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23).
And this is true all year long. But when Jesus said to deny yourself, he didn’t mean to always go against what you want. Really. He meant there are things I want that will not make me more like him-a lot of things, actually. So following him often means dying to self by denying myself those things.
Mortifications-little deaths to self-make us more like Jesus and can be offered up for the sanctification of the world and others. Mortification can come in many different forms. It’s not always denying yourself something you want. Sometimes it means doing something you don’t want. Sloth or greed can cause us to not do things we should do. Choosing not to be slothful or greedy often means doing something for someone else-and this is a little death to self.
Love is the not-so-secret ingredient that helps us die to self. The entire gospel and Jesus’ life are about love. He is constantly telling us and showing us how to love one another and God. That’s because when we learn to love, dying to self becomes so much easier since we start living for God and others. Life is hard when we’re selfish, but when we live for love we see what Christ means when he says “my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:30).

This is one of the most accurate videos ever. Jesus never asked us to die in the aspects which draw us closer to him. Very often the deep desires within our hearts point towards these good aspects. Unfortunately, I used to believe it was easy to know God's will: just look at what you want the least, that would be his will for your life. Took me some years to correct it..

All you have to do is carry them thankfully, and at the end of the day, place them on the altar. Must admit... the only thing that's easy is really fasting. I can only pray and fast and in the small things that I succeed in... hopefully it will snowball to the bigger stuff. If it works for sins then it must work for the good stuff too. Life is about the tiny details... the small things we do repeatedly form us and mold us. We dont need visions or gifts although they can be helpful... but what we truly need is an awful lot of grace specially at the current situation. We must die to self. May God keep us all safe.

Such as praying the rosary very early in the morning. Watching a catholic video in between other videos. Reading the bible daily. Not just giving up things like sweets or movies.

Luke 13:3 "unless you do penance, you too shall perrish" its by design, you receive SO many graces from our Lord. Its simple really, He feels so loved to know you would rather love Him than your passions. They become easier to take on the more you do them because its also easier to fall in love with our Lord. You start to care about your passions much less, because you are so focused on our Lord. God designed it this way.

This was spot on! I absolutely applaud the focus on love. This is all about growing in love-choosing to grow in love in a healthy way, in a way that helps us to mature in the “Christ nature” given to us in baptism. And you make it very practical, very do-able, step by baby step.

Wow the Spirirt really does works in mysterious ways and I'm just realising (maybe a but late haha) that when we ask the Lord does provide always but sometimes we are just blind to see it, and all we have to do is pray that He helps us to open our eyes to see.
Basically in my Lectio group this week our passage was from Luke 9-18:36 and my prayer was Lord please help me to better understand how I can truly renounce and abandon self to follow you daily. And then there is this video...wow praise be our Lord most high. And Thank you very much Fr Mike for sharing this
