  • Hello hello!
In today's video we talk all about how exactly you can exchange your foreign driver's license for a Dutch driver's license in the Netherlands. This video was inspired by a lot of Expat Facebook groups where a lot of people seem to be confused or frustrated about the process of getting a Dutch driver's license. So we thought we'd film this video to answer all those commonly asked questions.
    So if you're asking yourself:
-Is it possible to exchange my foreign driver's license for a Dutch driver's license
-Do I need to take the Dutch driver's exam
-How much is it to exchange your driver's license
-Can I get a Dutch driver's license with my 30% ruling

The reason the tests are hard is because traffic is dangerous, you use it together with other people and that comes with a lot of responsibilty. Road situations here are often not 1 to 1 comparable with Canada or other countries. I dont get why that would be an issue. Even people at age here get tested regurlary.. thats for safety, not to annoy you ot other expats.
EDIT.. the way most US citizen get taught to drive scares the crap out of me to be honest. That said.. great that you guys interact with other expats and provide information. Keep it up!

I agree. Driving test should always be strict. Roads are not the public parks. These are dangerous (for you and others) if you are careless.

Makes total sense. Then why don't the expats who are getting the 30% ruling benefit, have to take the exam? Seems stupid to be honest.
Everyone should be taking the practical exam.

You didn't need a Health declaration? According to their website:
"A Health Declaration is always required when renewing a driving license from outside the EU or EFTA. If you have a driving license from the EU or EFTA, you do not always need a Health Declaration. You will receive a message about this from the RDW."

One quick question : What if my driving license was issued after I came to the Netherlands? As I also fall under 30% ruling, so I opted for test in my home country to exchange it directly but I see there is a rule that states to reside in the country of issue for at least 185 days which I do not comply. Do you have any info/experience on this? just for your information, my home country does not fall under any country that has treaty with NL to exchange the driving license. Please share your views. Thanks

Hi. Thanks for this information. How about if it's ur wife with the 30 percent ruling, can the husband with drivers license directly swap to Dutch license? Thanks

Hi guys and thanks for the info. If I do a swap with my American DL, do they keep the American DL? When you say "swap" it sounds like you have to give yours over to them? Where does it go? I would need that as proof of residence in the US when I go home to my house in the US.

Yes unfortunately, that is what happens. They take your foreign license, and apparently it’s kept with the foreign embassy (for us it was the Canadian Embassy). And apparently we were told you can get it back one day if you exchange it back.

  • @NaughtyNightlifeNomad

Why didn’t you mention the list of countries?

i am an international students here. i got Australian full driving licence. would would be the best process for me to get Dutch licence in future?
    thanks in advance

Unless you have 30% ruling through the highly skilled migrant worker sponsorship, I don’t think you can exchange your Australian license for a Dutch one. At least we don’t think there is an agreement between Australia and Holland to do an exchange without the 30% ruling - but do your research just to be sure

11:58 I cant understand how you can say that (...'so that you are somewhat!! familiar with the rules of the road'') What do you mean, somewhat familiar???
Driving a car is not like walking. You NEED to know the rules... I wish you all the best in the Netherlands, but plz, learn the rules of the road if you are going to use the road. I dont want to get hit when I am on my bike or just walking, because an expat or tourist didnt bother to learn the rules and didnt give me the right of way when I absolutely had the right of way.

And for Europeans that move to US, just go to DMV for a permit (a licence with some restrictions).
Don't bother learning anything, the questions are easy and you can have 40% wrong (multiple choice), even by guessing half the answers you will still pass.
I got just one question wrong:
    A) It is legal to shoot a firearm from a moving car.
    B) It is legal to shoot a firearm form a parked car.
    C) It is not legal to shoot a firearm form a car.
Obviously I picked C ..... B is the correct answer.
