Strength training is one of the most important things you can do for longevity. By lifting weights, you can preserve strength and maintain muscle mass as you age. Lifting weights for men over 50 might be even MORE important than lifting weights while you are young. This is based on REAL strength training research.
Getting older is a process of losing muscle mass, mobility, and energy. One of the best ways to combat these side effects of aging including sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss) is by doing strength training. Other benefits of strength training include boosting your metabolism and activating genes that help promote longevity.
In this video, I'll go over all of the benefits of lifting weights for men and women over 40 and guide you through the research behind it. It's never too late to start strength training and lifting weights, no matter how old you are. Get started by trying any of our workouts!

Very informative. I'm in my mid sixties. I was getting in to some weight lifting when Covid hit. I'm undecided about going back to the gym. What are the positive impacts of running and pushups? I do about a 100 or more pushups a day, and run (fingers crossed) 5 to 6 days a week. I do have some weights here in the house. Establishing an effective home routine with them is the real problem.

Fit Father Project - Fitness For Busy Fathers Doc I would like to know how aging people can attain more agility and flexibility and how to overcome mobility restrictions, joint pain and physical conditions which limit training and which worsen with training. For example when young I could sprint fast, swing on monkey bars easily, and get up off the floor no problem. Now those simple things are near impossible even though I workout with weights and am fairly fit from jogging

@@gixxer750axld my point about ebikes could have been explained more clearly. Regular mountain biking, particularly in the woods, is a HIIT, high intensity interval style training. An electric mountain bike turns your rides into more of a low intensity, steady state style of training. It’s in my opinion excellent for weight loss while maintaining muscle retention. You can ride very aggressive and still keep your heart rate in your desired zone. I have had tremendous results keeping my muscle while loosing the 60lbs this year. As a life time mountain biker/lifter I would loose much more muscle when aggressively riding while dieting before I purchased an ebike. I have a class 1 pedal assist, no throttle. There is a 40% mortality rate for people over 50 who have this happen. Even with the bad medical care I survived. After 5 weeks I had dropped from a strong/fit 165 lbs to 135. 10 weeks after the rupture and after gaining back 10 pounds, I resumed working out. Hey Dr.A, this is such great video. Your enthusiasm is very motivating. I find doing supersets for 45 minutes 3 days a week to be efficient and highly effective. Supersets are great for both intense cardio and muscle building. Thanks for all of your wonderful advice!

Enthusiasm is the good virus!! I'm glad you enjoyed this and great job on that workout. Your superset plan 3x/week sounds spot on. We totally agree that supersets are a phenomenal way to get cardio + muscle gains in one. In addition to supersets, we like to do these pyramid style workouts. If you're interested in something new for one of your full body sessions this upcoming week, check this out... we call it the "24-Min Workout" ... super effective... All true !
I have been training in the gym for over 40 years. I still train about 11 hours weekly . . . mostly free weights and cardio.
Last Autumn my doctor said that my physiological age was that of a man in his mid 30's. Most folks think that I am in my 50's.
Both of my younger brothers look older than I am . . . My youngest brother is 60.
There is no secret ! Just be committed and consistent with good nutrition, strength and cardio routine, regular sleep cycles, and a low stress level.

I started lifting at 50 and wish and think I should’ve started earlier. Not that I was a couch potato because I routinely jogged and did cardio but that kind of workout ruined my lower back, I learned that you can combine both but lifting put you state of mind in another level. I also learned that for lifting, right position is king. A wrong posture can send you to the hospital. Start low and slow with the correct posture and do not confuse hypertrophy with exhaustion. The former is good; the latter is not.

72 - I use basically a band workout 2 days a week at home and weights 2 days at the gym. After lifting for almost 2 years I set up exercise bands in my basement and found it made a huge difference. I trained with basically bands only for 5 months and then started adding some weights again. My body felt better after band training and my lifts were actually heavier. Hope you are incorporating this in your routines? Btw, I'm talking working hard and making the bands cause maximum effort. My body has been beat up through the years from sports and other activities and the bands allow me to get a better result than I was getting with weights alone. I'm hoping this inspires some who can't really get into weight lifting.

Bands are a good suplament in between work outs. I started using them too. It helps to take out sorness from lifting a couple of days before that. I also have been experimenting with Hiit and plyometrics combos. Isometrics is a way to increase strength. I'm 72 and don't give up but listen to that old body and put the pedal to the metal when it wants to go. Make sure you give it time to heal in between work outs or you won't be able to get stronger. The heavier you go the longer it takes to heal.

I think it's also important that men who've been working out since their 20s need to train differently in their 40s 50s and older. Bob Paris wrote a great book about 20 years ago called "Prime," going over how you're more prone to injury, and while you shouldn't stop lifting, you need to be wiser about how your body won't recover as well if you're trying to lift with the same intensity you did at 25.
