Sectional Warping a Floor Loom/Random Color Stripes, Weaving Cotton Dishtowels - Tips & Tricks

  • Hi, welcome to Fiber Love Diary! Today I'm warping my floor loom using a sectional warp beam, so I can use a warp much, much longer than I can wind on a mill. (I don't have a board). I choose a color palette, and then used a random number generator to choose colors for springy stripes.
    I'll be showing you how I wind bobbins for one of these warps, and also the little homemade tools John has made me to replace a huge bobbin rack, and how to use the tension box. I hope this helps someone. It is a long, involved process, but it will give me a long, long weaving time without warping again, so it's worth it to me. Thanks for joining me. I appreciate you! Thanks, I love you. Bye!

    Thanks so much for this video! None of my looms have a sectional beam, but I am less intimidated about eventually getting one. I saw that back beam issue and said “oh no” out loud. Btw, you blew me away with the yard counter from fishing line, the drill bit to wind bobbins, and the bobbin set up!!! • @FiberLoveDiary
      @FiberLoveDiary  Před rokem +3

      I totally get it. I didn't want to use up all that space either for a bobbin rack. You do have to practice setting up the fishing line counter to get it just right to count it, but it does work. I'm sure it's not exact, but they're very close so I think it still helps with waste compared to just throwing it on bobbins.

    Finally! someone else with a sectional beam that is 2" ! Every video I"ve ever seen shows looms with 1" sections, and considering how many problems I"ve had warping it, it seemed easier to me to have smaller amounts to do at a time. My loom sort of "came" to me; it is a Norwood loom and it is quite lovely cherry wood. But I have often wished for two other stooges to join me when I'm trying to do it because it's hard to be a stooge all by yourself! I have a hard time keeping the threads in order in each section because they turn over themselves as they roll on. Thanks to you, I have some really good ideas from how you did it that will help me next time. Although I have tried taping before, I think I"ll use a lot more and put the color changes in the middle. (My color changes so far have always been random whether I liked it or not). Thank you so much for this video. And maybe I can find a fishing line counter, because I don't have any way at this point to know how much is on my bobbins....I do a lot of guessing....alas. paula (I live in jerusalem, israel, and equipment to go with sectional beam looms is pretty hard to find)

    Thank you for this! Excellent info for multiple color warp on a sectional beam. I’ve only ever used 1 color. My brain was hurting trying to determine the best way to approach this.

  • @CrazyMountain_Fiberworks

    Thank you for sharing and explaining it so well. I have also done that before with not going over the back beam.

      It's extremely difficult to explain. I really should have talked with the loom in front of me, but live and learn!

    I believe the bolt your using on the drill is called a carriage bolt they come in various lengths like most bolts and screws do. I would either measure the length of your bobbin or take one to the store and make sure the bobbin will fit correctly

    I was gonna comment on the fiber on your shoulder and you removed it before I could 😅. Beautiful weaving pattern. I love watching your videos. John so loves you ❤️ 💖

    My loom is currently in storage (with a project on it) as I don't have space for it in my current home. Moving this summer and this makes me so excited to get back to weaving!!!!

    Hi Trish! I am watching this as I eat breakfast before I get ready for work. Thank you for this. It made sense. Looks great. One question - where do you find the time, energy, and motivation? I have a friend who says “Whatever drugs she’s on, I want them.” That’s how I feel when I watch you.

    Gorgeous! I love the colors. I did have that moment of panic with you, but simple solutions make it all better! I'm using up the warp that the previous owner had put on my 2 heddle loom, so I haven't had to wind more warp... I'm not looking forward to it.

    This is exciting! I bought a loom with a sectional warping thingy last fall and I'm planning to clean it and set it up this summer. I've also been looking for info about sectional warping and coming up with zilch! Holy crap is that gorgeous! I guess I'm going to need to buy one of those tensioning boxes. I'm pretty sure my loom didn't come with one. There is a box that is insanely dusty… better be brave and check it!
