  • We head to Broken Hill Australia for the launch of the 2024 Toyota LandCruiser. As part of the launch event, we experienced on-road driving, off-road driving, as well as some time towing a 3.1 tonne caravan.
Does the 4-cylinder suck? Is the 2024 70 Series LandCruiser any good? Well it's time to find out.

That chief Landcruiser engineer (8:47) sure put in a good afternoon's work this year. Take the exact engine and gearbox from a Prado and slap it in the Landcruiser, put in a couple of 'luxury' USB-C ports and a couple of cup holders and then take the rest of the year off for holidays knowing it will be a sell-out success. The guy works 1 afternoon a year and then goes out driving around, having fun, and gets to call it 'testing', he is living the life.

Thank goodness they finally have a function traction control (even if it's sluggish to react) as a 70 series without diff locks was totally pointless, just lifted wheels and stayed put.
Even a grassy acsent was a challenge without lockers.
Fortunately we had lockers, but companions who didn't opt for lockers were so pissed off.
That traction control has transformed it, front suspension on the 76 appeared to flex better than my previous vehicle, less wheel lift occuring.
The new 2.8 auto, traction control, appearance of better flex, maybe it's finally a real option. Power more than sufficient, better than the V8.
Absolutely loved my 76 initially, it was a hype thing but and the longer we owned it the more we despised it. Lasted just 3 years in our lives.
Absolutely was a disappointment in the end once the hype wore off.
Really wasn't a power plant irrespective to all the claims, thirsty as hell when driven as a V8 or utilised to tow our van and so frigen unstable on road.
When I looked into buying another, wife says
"You buy another one of them and you'll be travelling alone" she so hated it.
It was off the list so opted to a new 2016 GU ZD30 auto and love the thing. Diff lock available, not required, just crawls anything we point it at.
    Comfort, stability, capable.
ECU tune, responce is now better than V8 was, far more economical, great vehicle.
It's 6 going on 7 years of use, total tourer package and not about to part with it for one of these. Actually, won't be parting with it, kids will claim it once we don't want it.
Wonder how long it will be before Toyota stop quoting V8 power/torque outputs simply because they're embarrassing.
Nissan did that when the ZD30 appeared. Had better power/torque so eventually stopped quoting TD 4.2 outputs.
Have owned a TD 4.2 previously also, lasted 9 weeks in our lives, so friggin gutless and cooked whilst towing, another hyped up vehicle.
So sort after we sold it for a profit just 9 weeks after buying it, sucker.

I’ve recently tested the LC79 2.8l. I always try to speak my mind in life, although it’s not always pleasant for everyone. If you’ve never driven a V8, the new 2.8L and it’s automatic gearbox might seem okay, but if you have, it feels like nothing but total bullshit. It’s like ‘upgrading’ from a Mercedes Benz to a HAVAL.

This new four cylinder Landcruiser is definitely going to slowly diminish the V8 Landcruiser 🦕🦕 for most folk who want a nicer more comfortable yet still capable off-roader - this will include the city based folk who have to deal with the stop start traffic and would rather have a daily driver and off-roader/tourer in one vehicle - I’d happily own a Troopcarrier auto for touring around Australia and city/regional lifestyle especially given the higher fuel costs for the V8 - my Hilux is a regional daily driver/gardening/touring vehicle (that’s three vehicles for the price of one!) - using the same four cylinder engine with an automatic transmission I average 10km/litre hwy and 12-13l/100km fully loaded with camping gear/aluminium canopy or around town - a lot of folk that just bought/ordered a V8 will be trying to sell them or cancel orders so it will be interesting to see which way the prices go for them as Toyota reduce V8 stock in favour of the new four cylinder auto.

Australia gets the heavy duty suspension arrangement, same as every model since the 40 series with a full floating axle. Likely not worth the cost to re-engineer a narrower front axle to meet the required GVM.
Europe, Japan and UAE get the light duty suspension version with a semi floating axle. These have the same width front axle as the rear.

    • @matthewh8005

Theres no good reason at all. Its toyota being cheap cunts. Front axle was widened to accommodate the V8 but they couldnt be fucked matching the rear because the buyer will just live with it or pay for a mod themselves.
The 4 cyl doesnt need the extra space but because Toyota are cunts and want to keep the absolute gold mine going havent developed a front axle to suit the 4 cyl.
And until the V8 is axed (which is happening, Toyota are paving the way to drop it) theres is no chance it will fixed and even then, when the 70 goes 4cyl only, I doubt they will change it.

What does it matter if the 4 cylinder makes the 70 series viable for more people, Toyota can’t deliver enough to meet demand anyway. This is simply a matter coming up with the cheapest way to continue to milk customers on this car now that the V8 is gone in the 300 series. Toyota really wants to convince everyone that the V8 isn’t needed so they don’t have to keep producing it for just the 70 series. I know what will be worth more when second hand though.

Sigh, what reviewers don’t get is all that electronic crap is what fails first in the bush. Traction control, electric mirrors, object avoidance radar, remotely adjustable headlights are the items that will fail once these cars have some age & miles up on them. They could have brought the front track back in with the 4cyl, but didn’t, and no room for dual batteries.
