I had the privilege to see Jekyll and Hyde in Houston before it went to Broadway. Linda Eder literally stopped the show with this song. She was brilliant .
The singing is amazing, as is always the case with Linda Eder, but noone seems to be mentioning the AMAZING acting she is doing too. I mean . . . wow! Look at the subtlety of eye movement and body language, as well as vocal inflection, all expressing such depth of feeling. This is a tribute to every actor's goal of becoming the part they are playing! Well done Linda!
Well-said and add to what you observe here, she is singing at the top of her lungs while moving around and changing her position on and off of that bed the whole time.
People comparing Coleen to Linda here must realize this whole play was basically written around Linda's voice. Without her voice this play never would have happened. The reason her husband was the writer so thank Linda's voice for the inspiration of all these songs in this play.
They made two or three recordings over the course of several years before the broadway cast album, and she was the only singer who appeared on all of them. And of all her solo cds, the best ones are the ones featuring Frank’s music. He knows how to write for there voice.
Linda will always be the gold standard performance for this role, but it's unrealistic to expect her to play this role for an entire run of a show especially if it spans more than a year or two.. Colleen Sexton did a phenomenal job taking over for Linda... fast forward a few years when the remake came out with Constantine Mouralis and Deborah Cox... Deborah Cox was the perfect modern equivalent of Linda Eder to portray this role and she definitely SLAYed it.
Linda Eder OWNS this song along with Someone Like You. There is no one like her. I have seen her three times in concert and she always has the audience in her trance.
I saw her live in Los Angeles at a historic old theater. I was in the 3rd row. When she sang "Don't Rain on my Parade" , she literally took my breath away. Not even Streisand could do that.
Linda's voice has a classic quality, like the old pop singers (I am talking 50s thereabouts) - very rich and full and when she belts it out, it's truly a thing to behold. Colleen Sexton does sing it very well, it's just her voice is so much thinner so the belts don't have that 'whale' like quality.
9 people don't know great singing with sincere introspective acting when they see it, I guess!! I'm glad I do... this is one of the most amazing voices I've ever heard.
Khary Wilson...maybe, just maybe those people you negatively judged have something other than singing on their minds. Maybe they did not like the camera work. Maybe they wanted more from the videographer. Maybe, just maybe, they did not like the audio. Of course, maybe they did not like Linda’s voice. We are all different and have different tastes in music. Just saying...
A new life What i wouldn't give to have a new life One thing I have learned as I go through life Nothing is for free along the way A new start That's the thing I need to give me new heart Half a chance in life to find a new part Just a simple role that i can play A new hope Something to convince me to renue hope A new day Bright enough to help me find my way A new chance One that maybe has a touch of romance Where can it be? The chance for me A new dream I have one i know that very few dream I would like to see that over-due dream Even though it never may come true A new love Though i know there's no such thing as true love Even so, although i never knew love Still i feel that one dream is my due A new world This one thing i want to ask of you world Once, before its time to say "Adieu" world One sweet chance to prove the cinics wrong A new life More and more im sure as i go through life Just to play the game and to persue life Just to share its pleasures and belong That's what i've been here for all along Each days a brand new life
I don't know if it's the incredibly pure vibrato in her voice, but her voice has an amazing ringing quality that I've rarely heard in other singers. And, she has it across the range... low, medium, and high notes. Most often you'll hear a singer who has a sweet spot where their voice sounds far better, but Linda's range is incredible -- she's comfortable and effortless across so much more of the scale. This song is a killer, with so many key changes, yet she pounds it home. Amazing mastery of her voice.
Amazing Number by one of the best Female Singers. Saw her in Jekyll and Hyde on Broadway invited by Frank Wildhorn who composed the Music and was her Husband. How Magical that Night was. They are both Brilliant and to be Treasured.
I've been a fan of this show ever since it came out on Broadway... and Linda Eder was the first woman I saw to portray the role of Lucy Harris... and she's always absolutely nailed the performance of "A New Life" every single time; this song is pivotal in the storyline because it lets the audience know just what position Lucy is in, and how she wants to find a better life for herself but... well... to avoid any spolers, she never gets there... but Linda has become the absolute gold standard for this song's performance. Colleen Sexton was incredible, and even Deborah Cox delivered a beautifully updated version of this... but Linda Eder will always be the queen, she'll always be the original, the true Lucy Harris, from Jekyll & Hyde.
I love that portion too and especially right before when she sings “I know that very few dream”. Her body and her eyes gaze up. Such a small thing but as someone else said very introspective acting. We are watching her alone. She’s not singing as if she’s well aware of the audience.
Linda Eder is an absolutely amazing singer. I love the way she performs this wonderful song with such emotion and with a voice that is so beautiful and so powerful. She is one of the greats.
I've listened to a few versions of this but there is something in the way she sings this that makes me feel that the character and the woman felt every word. This is how you sell a song and I'm buying all of it. She is just amazing.
What an immense talent this woman is! The vocals! She gives so many levels, with just her voice and her interpretation of the text is SPOT on. This is High caliber art at its finest right here.
It's quite amazing to see her transmit that much without even trying too hard. You can tell she's insecure and not convinced of herself as an actress yet integrates all of that into her performance. And out comes magic!
in the beginning her voice is literally baby angels on clouds singing baby unicorns to sleep. then at the end she's belting her entire face off and making me cry. just amazing.
I was an usher at the Plymouth Theater during her final week in this show. Sadly, she lost her voice during this number and struggled to finish. During intermission, the stage manager announced that her understudy would step in for the second act. The audience was understandably disappointed as were all of us working “front of house”
we saw her performance in 1997 , it was outstanding and from then on J & H became our favorite broadway musical. It was also a pleasure meeting Miss Eder, Robert and Cristine after the show....excellent post !
Omg when I watch this woman sing I'm in awe. She's stunning to look at and it maybe just me but she has to have one of the best voices broadway has ever seen. No one can top her as Lucy. I just think colleen is too young for the role and reminds me of Ariel from the little mermaid that jumped into Lucy's clothes and tried to sing this song. Linda's ending gives me chills I think Colleen cracked! Love you Linda!
Linda has an amazing voice and was perfect for this part. She deserved at least a nomination for a Tony for this part. I saw it a few years ago with Deborah Cox and while I liked her in it, she was no where near as good as Linda in this part. Unlike Deborah and others who have played this part, Linda really puts her heart into this part,
Jamie Paul the voters hated this musical that year😂😂😂 it only got 4 nominations and didn’t win any of them. Honestly the role of Lucy is a weird role to have opinions on. You either love her or hate her. Many of my friends hate this role, I kind of understand due to the fact that she sings about the same thing over and over again. But I do agree that it should’ve at least gotten a tony nom
Linda's voice is stunning! I wish I would have been older when she was doing the show! I think Coleen does a pretty awesome job with this song as well.
This became my fav musical..in '97, I met Miss Eder, Cuccioli and Cristine Knoll after the show.....I still have the pics and autographs...........treasures!
Incredible! I love Linda Eder. Her voice always blows me away. Very few singers can belt and have those high overtones. Just listen to the last note, and you'll hear what I'm talking about.
Por Dios que gran voz !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!que respiración increible, afinación, colocación y administración del aire. TECNICA, RELAJACIÓN Y CONCENTRACIÓN DE UNA GRAN ARTISTA
I'll say this. This was made for Linda just in the way other roles were made for others but when they actually had to replace the role, I was very impressed with Coleen. She was the first role I saw so I was partial to her but I find they are both very talented women and make it their own. Bravo to both of them for bringing such a well written and complex character to life.
I have an easier time believing Linda's performance. There's so much passion and her acting is spot-on. I've always felt Coleen cheapens the role a bit and I know that's an unpopular opinion, and it might just be because Linda is MY Lucy in my eyes and heart, but I don't feel like Coleen measures up at all.
I agree I think from the clips I have seen Coleen over acts a bit. A little to animated for me. But that is just a personal preference. I am partial to Linda been a fan since star search.
Thanks for posting this. Linda is amazing She put a lot into this song and Someone like you. I also got to see Jekyl and Hyde in Prebroadway in Chicago in March, and Deborah was good nothing like Linda.
I love Linda and Coleen!! I can't wait to hear Deborah Cox version when the show comes back to Broadway this April. I heard part of it in the new commercial!
Her name is Coleen Sexton and she also played Lucy in a later version of J&H. She is on the DVD release of the show with David Hasselhoff if u want to check it out!
i love both Coleen Sexton and Linda Eder. they both bring a different type of personality to Lucy and both have very different oices so i cant say i like one better. i think they are both amazing :)
It's really weird, everyone sings this song so differently - I did it 2 years ago on my channel and I do it differently to everyone I've heard, but all of them - Emily, Colleen and Linda are all phenomenal!
I completely agree! I only wish she had been teamed with Andrea Rivette, whose voice is more mature than Christianne Nolls'. I'm going to be singing this for my voice class, as it's my favourite from the show. Linda is SUCH a phenomenal talent!!!!
I think she fainted at the end! That last note did for her! For the record she held that note for 14 seconds! World famous tenors typically manage 9 seconds on the big high C of Nessun Dorma and Pavarotti (known as the King of the High Cs) usally manages around 12 seconds.
Why must there always be a war between Colleen and Linda. They are both amazing and perform the part to the way they thought it should be performed. Linda has a great voice as does Colleen, and they both did amazing jobs with the rold. Can't we leave it at that and not say anything harsh about their singing or acting skills. Please and thank you :)
I know a lot of people compair Linda and colleen. to me colleen was the stronger actress but when it comes down to who owned the musical aspect Linda was the queen.

J Cook...well put young man! VERY well put!!!
Well-said and add to what you observe here, she is singing at the top of her lungs while moving around and changing her position on and off of that bed the whole time.
She played this role with so much more humanity and subtlety than anyone else who has followed.
People comparing Coleen to Linda here must realize this whole play was basically written around Linda's voice. Without her voice this play never would have happened. The reason her husband was the writer so thank Linda's voice for the inspiration of all these songs in this play.
true

Learn something new every day. Very cool!
Linda has one of the greatest voices ever. If she had made music in 90s she would have been a super star.
This is from the 90s 😒
The first time I heard Linda Eder sing, I thought she sounded like a mix between Celine Dion and Barbra Streisand. Yes? Yes?
Amazing Breath control
Linda Eder OWNS this song along with Someone Like You. There is no one like her. I have seen her three times in concert and she always has the audience in her trance.
I saw her live in Los Angeles at a historic old theater. I was in the 3rd row. When she sang "Don't Rain on my Parade" , she literally took my breath away. Not even Streisand could do that.
I've met her, got her autograph, saw her in concert multiple times, she's so sweet and so gracious...my favorite of all time!

Hear, hear!!
A new life
What i wouldn't give to have a new life
One thing I have learned as I go through life
Nothing is for free along the way
A new start
That's the thing I need to give me new heart
Half a chance in life to find a new part
Just a simple role that i can play
A new hope
Something to convince me to renue hope
A new day
Bright enough to help me find my way
A new chance
One that maybe has a touch of romance
Where can it be?
The chance for me
A new dream
I have one i know that very few dream
I would like to see that over-due dream
Even though it never may come true
A new love
Though i know there's no such thing as true love
Even so, although i never knew love
Still i feel that one dream is my due
A new world
This one thing i want to ask of you world
Once, before its time to say "Adieu" world
One sweet chance to prove the cinics wrong
A new life
More and more im sure as i go through life
Just to play the game and to persue life
Just to share its pleasures and belong
That's what i've been here for all along
Each days a brand new life

The way she sings overdue is pretty much my reason for living...
I love that portion too and especially right before when she sings “I know that very few dream”. Her body and her eyes gaze up. Such a small thing but as someone else said very introspective acting. We are watching her alone. She’s not singing as if she’s well aware of the audience.

I can't get enough of her. Love listening to her.
I saw him on broadway front seats! Tremendous!
in the beginning her voice is literally baby angels on clouds singing baby unicorns to sleep. then at the end she's belting her entire face off and making me cry. just amazing.
I was an usher at the Plymouth Theater during her final week in this show.

That voice! What more can I say?
she is perfection
Sooooo talented. Luv you Linda Eder!
we saw her performance in 1997 , it was outstanding and from then on J & H became our favorite broadway musical. It was also a pleasure meeting Miss Eder, Robert and Cristine after the show....excellent post !
Best voice ever!

Saw her perform this live in New Haven - gave me chills! Never thought anyone could compare with Streisand -just amazing!
This is what I call an "intense" performance. She's the best Lucy in my opinion
I am so lucky to have seen this show when it opened. She was amazing.
Linda has an amazing voice and was perfect for this part. She deserved at least a nomination for a Tony for this part. No One Can Sing This and " Someone like You " in Such A Moving & Soothing Manner As Linda DOES!!!!!!!!!
If anyone was BORN to play this role, it's Eder...
WOW!! Have not seen this video before - Linda Eder is a Goddess!! LUV IT!!
Seeing this live was just amazing. The video can't do her justice.
Gawd she's wondrous... one of the few great voices I've heard
Have loved this song for years and Linda takes the crown
i am straight up UNWORTHY to watch this friggen 750hp video of a legitimate angel singing into my soul. Bless this woman.
Por Dios que gran voz !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!que respiración increible, afinación, colocación y administración del aire. TECNICA, RELAJACIÓN Y CONCENTRACIÓN DE UNA GRAN ARTISTA
She has no peers today. No gimmicks - nothing false, Just that voice - like no other.

This version of Lucy is my favorite. The acting is PERFECT
Linda owns this song.
No one will ever sing Frank Wildhorn's music like Linda Eder. Period.
Her and Coleen are just as good as each other! So much emotion and power!! :)
Spectacular.
Damn she can sang!
On Broadway - Greatest. Voice. Ever.
theres something beautiful about linda's performance. she's older, she's experienced more heartbreak. it's just gorgeous.
This performance is absolutely brilliant. I tear up EVERY time I hear this song. It expresses so much of my own wishes and dreams and regrets.
I really need a Linda/Celine duet written and produced by David Foster. It would be sublime.
When she preformed in Denver, she literally stoppped the show after singing this song. An unforgettable experience!
Hope to see Linda again at the Hollywood Cinegrill again. Great Show!
memories of meeting Linda after J/K in 1997....she signed my playbill
You can't even compare Linda Eder and the other woman. Can't compare Linda Eder to anyone. She is in a league of her own.
I have this on repeat every single day !
I have tears in my eyes. Beautiful.
She's amazing, I wish I could sing like her
Are you kidding me?!?! No one can hold a candle to Linda Eder as Lucy...the role was written for her!
Sing it baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Talk about nailing a song. Bravo bravo bravo
I have an easier time believing Linda's performance. There's so much passion and her acting is spot-on. She's absolutely incredible!!! Wow!!
This is such a powerful song. The way she belted brand new life. It's so sad that she will die on the next scene.
She's literally perfect.
Hey 1997 :) I was born that year... I wish I could see the Broadway show with her or Coleen in it. I love them both.
So great, added this to my audition collection. :)
Thanks for posting this. Linda is amazing She put a lot into this song and Someone like you. I also got to see Jekyl and Hyde in Prebroadway in Chicago in March, and Deborah was good nothing like Linda.
Jekyll and Hyde in Korea is really good, but it's so nice and touching to hear the English version If I have a chance, I want to see it
That is one VERY talented woman.
They were both amazing! I mean really how can you take anything away from either of them. Eder Sexton/Sexton Eder. Both deserve the accolades!
OH MY GOD THAT WAS INCREDIBLE
She is GREAT!
What a voice!
AMAZING!
i agree! My favorite is definitly Colleen Sexton. I love her voice and how she portrays Lucy...so believeable!
I agree. She is great
she's my hero...
i love both Coleen Sexton and Linda Eder. they both bring a different type of personality to Lucy and both have very different oices so i cant say i like one better. i think they are both amazing :)
Agreed. This isn't like comparing Anthony Warlow and David Hasselhoff.
Please come back to Broadway =(
It's really weird, everyone sings this song so differently - I did it 2 years ago on my channel and I do it differently to everyone I've heard, but all of them - Emily, Colleen and Linda are all phenomenal!

This video is from a press reel issued for the original Broadway cast. I don't know of any official release of the full original cast.
Why must there always be a war between Colleen and Linda. They are both amazing and perform the part to the way they thought it should be performed. Want to sing want to sing want to siiiiiiiing!
I know a lot of people compair Linda and colleen. to me colleen was the stronger actress but when it comes down to who owned the musical aspect Linda was the queen.
Elise Fincher completely agree!
wow. i was JUST about to type pretty much the same thing, then i scrolled down and saw this. haha
well, i agree. :]
Exactly!
