- Inside of the concentration camps during the Second World War, there were many stories of brutal guards and barbaric treatment. One of the most evil guards who worked inside of Buchenwald was Martin Sommer who was known as 'The Hangman of Buchenwald.' He was even tried by the Nazis for being too violent and was later imprisoned for his role as a torturer, executioner and terrifying brute. Inside of Buchenwald, Sommer was in charge of extracting information and torturing prisoners and two people he targeted were two Austrian Priests.
Otto Neururer and Matthais Spanlang had both been transported to Buchenwald from Dachau and had been imprisoned for speaking out against the Nazis. They were imprisoned and then were tortured further as it was alleged that they both performed banned ceremonies inside of the camp. But the pair were then executed in brutal scenes in a forest next to Buchenwald. The pair were allegedly crucified on a tree upside down by Martin Sommer, and Neururer succumbed to his execution 34 hours after he was initially tied to the tree. Spanlang also its believed was killed next to Neururer.

Over a thousand priests died at Dachau concentration camp from hunger, disease, medical experiments, forced labor etc. The majority were polish. Many others died at other camps too.

WW2 was a religious war. The America and the western powers were Christians, the soviets were atheist, the jews were being slaughtered and the nazis were satanist.

As mentioned, Ilse Koch, the "red witch of Buchenwald" was particularly sadistic, even more so than her husband, Otto Koch. She was also known as the "lampshade woman." She delighted in torturing camp prisoners by, for example, parading them naked in the freezing cold until they died of exposure. She was eventually brought to trial in 1950.

Whenever I begin to feel sorry for myself over petty things that happen in everyday life I always try to think of the brutality of the thousands of people who had to endure during WW2. It always brings me back to reality of how spoiled I can be. My heart aches for these people.

I’ve done the same for years. It’s almost a religious outlet to see Holocaust is comparable the crucifixion. The world changed dramatically after WW2, my parents are Baby Boomers. Had it not been for the suffering, I may not be here.

Don't feel like you are spoiled. Those generations suffered the unimaginable and most don't want history to repeat itself.
The ones spoiled are the ones born decades after and, in lacking of having any "amazing wartime story", try to elevate themselves because "they had less convenience than we have", but in truth they had a life easier than anyone before or after them and are still very much reaping the results of the advancements "they didn't have back then", even more so in terms of medical treatment since they are now elderly.

How those camp guards had the intestinal fortitude to ruthlessly commit such atrocities and not give it a second thought is beyond me. To kill innocent human lives in the most abhorrent ways possible and then treat it all like just another day at work -- it's beyond sickening. How can they just shut off their conscience and gas to death an innocent Jewish child or torture to death a man of the cloth? To sanction mass murder on that scale is a special kind of evil, the likes of which I will never be able to fathom.

The film at the beginning of this video was shot at a satellite camp of Buchebwald outside the town of Ohrdruf. It was the first camp liberated in the West and my father was there as a member of the US Fourth Armored Division. Toward the end of his life, I asked him about Ohrdruf. His face went ashen, his eyes took on a "thousand yard stare" and he struggled to find words. Finally, he said, " The smell was beyond belief." Just seeing smelling place scarred his soul.

The human capacity for great evil lies just below the surface. These videos are an important reminder to everyone of that fact.
Whenever I get depressed with my situations around I watch these videos. I find these much more powerful than talking to a priest or shrink to restore my hope. Nevertheless, they make me feel guilty all the same.

I fist saw that horrifying thumbnail picture of those poor prisoners hanging by their arms when I toured Dachau in 1989. I never forgot it because back then before the internet, pictures like that weren’t in many books or docs.

These priests were not double-dealers like Oskar Schindler (whom the Jewish people also rightly honor). I suggested canonization because that is how Rome honors martyrs. Sorry, to continue from next (below) …and Sachenhausen camps were brought back into operation by the Soviets and Stasi as death camps until 1987. I have personally visited Sachenhausen and the reopened camp was extremely effective at killing those sent there.

My next door neighbor here in NYC is the son of a Dachau survivor. His grandparents were Catholics and in the "anti-Nazi" resistance movement in Germany. His father was was 9 at the time. The parents were betrayed and sent to Dachau. The mother, the main underground person in the family, was guillotined in front of her husband. The father died of a heart attack a few moments later. The son (my neighbor's father) was taken to the children's camp until he was 15 and then transferred to the adult camp. He was brutalized and once stabbed by a prison guard with a bayonet for being "insolent." He was bayonetted because he wouldn't (1) give up his "anti-nazi" stanceand (2) he wouldn't give up being a Catholic. He was 16. He survived. I have over 700 pages of official pages from the US Army confirming all of this. After his release from Dachau, he was hired by the US Army "goverment" of Bavaria. He was 19. He was allowed to carry a gun and helped the US track down prison guards from Dachau. The grandparents major crimes were (1) being Anti-Nazi/Hitler and (2) being Catholic.
Martin Sommer is a journalist of the Dutch 'de Volkskrant'. It must not be pleasant for him to have such a namesake.

This is the firs time I’ve heard of priests in camps. Soo sad. Martin Sommer May have evaded justice, but according to several articles he was wounded, loosing an arm and a leg on the opposite side. He was imprisoned for several years in this condition and spend the last 15 years of his life in a nursing home. If this is true then he had a horrible life and punishment came in another way.

To my humble knowledge and understanding the Roman catholic church /VATICAN was actually happy that the NAZIS in a brutal way helped to eliminate the archenemy of the Catholic faith , the Jews.
Possible even the few murdered priests where a calculated forecast ,to have a excuse on hand if something went wrong with the NAZIS. Actually the Church and the VATICAN itself knowed very well what was going one in the concentration camps never condemned or actually accused the NAZIS during the war. Especially the pope Pius X|| never said or condemned anything
On top it was again , when the Nazi top brass was escaping over Spain to South America the helping hand of the Catholic church. They stayed in Spanish Monasteries, changed their name, got false documents, passports and Money 💰

Does any one know of a Poland town called Olau in the 1940 s. or even before the 1940 s? My mother was born there, she was lucky and survived, I have looked and looked but can not find that town.
