UNLEASH THE ARCHERS on “Northwest Passage”:
“This song means a lot to us as a band, we like to put it on during those long drives on tour and it always brings us right back home. We originally recorded it to be a bonus track for our last full length album Apex, but we loved the track so much we knew it needed special treatment. We held on to it for a bit and eventually decided to release it as its own 7" vinyl EP with another Canadian cover song as the B side. The song “Northwest Passage” is all about touring through Canada, which Stan Rogers did a lot, and how it equates to being an explorer looking for the passage all those years ago. It really hits home with us, we've toured through Canada too many times to count, so we know just how Stan was feeling. That's where the name of the EP came from too; every time we hit the road on tour it's like we too become Explorers, with the great big unknown stretching out before us.”

See power metal band covers a Stan Rogers folk song, I laugh in delight.
Hear power metal band cover a Stan Rogers song, I cry in delight.
I know, right? I mean I realise they're Canadian, so that makes sense, but I saw this in a playlist I was listening to and I thought a Stan Rogers metal cover??? No way! Brittany can certainly belt this one out as well.
They aren't the only metal band to cover Stan Rogers. Alestorm covered Barrett's Privateers on their album, Back Through time.
This cover warms my black little Canadian heart in rare ways.
I love this cover. It works
I cri ever tim 😢
For years I've been the drunkest person in the room, the one who starts singing this song at the end of a party. To hear a high tempo, power-metal version literally brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for making this.
I've been banned from ever being in charge of the music at parties for this very reason.
You're not the only one who cried at this 😢

I was playing this song in the car after picking my kids up from school and my ten year old yells from the back seat "dad! I learned about this and the NW passage in school today!" I got a good laugh and then cranked the volume up and yelled let's keep it going then! We proceed to rock out all the way home lol
I found Stan Rogers the same quarter I was taking NW history in Highschool. It was so cool to understand all the references and learn more about them.
i doubt that...
She has an INSANE vocal range.
That's totally true.
She sounds like Lady Gaga
Not as insane as nepenthez
An old Scottish Gaelic blessing is Cuiridh mi clach air do chàrn, "I'll put a stone on your stone". In Highland folklore it is recounted that before Highland clans fought in a battle, each man would place a stone in a pile. Those who survived the battle returned and removed a stone from the pile. The stones that remained were built into a cairn to honour the dead.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cairn

Thank you so much for that piece of culture. I will remember it!
In this case the cairn referred to is this one described in this article: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franklin%27s_lost_expedition

"Northwest Passage"
Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea
Tracing one warm line through a land so wide and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea
Westward from the Davis Strait 'tis there it was said to lie
The sea route to the Orient for which so many died
Seeking gold and glory, leaving weathered, broken bones
And a long-forgotten lonely cairn of stones
Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea
Tracing one warm line through a land so wide and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea
Three centuries thereafter, I take passage overland
In the footsteps of brave Kelso, where his "sea of flowers" began
Watching cities rise before me, then behind me sink again
This tardiest explorer, driving hard across the plain
Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea
Tracing one warm line through a land so wide and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea
And through the night, behind the wheel, the mileage clicking west
I think upon Mackenzie, David Thompson and the rest
Who cracked the mountain ramparts and did show a path for me
To race the roaring Fraser to the sea
Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea
Tracing one warm line through a land so wide and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea
How then am I so different from the first men through this way
Like them I left a settled life, I threw it all away
To seek a Northwest Passage at the call of many men
To find there but the road back home again
Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage

Respect, from an American. I never thought that a Stan Rogers song could get better, at least in the sense of making a new generation receptive to his lyrics. His music sparked my interest in Canadian history.
It sparked me wanting to expatriate to Canada.

@Juggled Lotus I feel like that's a bit of an exaggeration. Lady Gaga is the biggest tool in the music industry.
Only female voice in the industry who could do justice to Stan Rogers. Great song and video.

First time I've seen a Stan Rogers references on a heavy metal video. Good on ya.
Obviously you have not heard of Floor Jansen, have you? www.thetoptens.com/best-female-metal-singer/
@@tarmotyyri6733 Not even remotely the same style of singing. She's sings operatic, symphonic metal, while Brittney is a power metal singer. And pretty much anyone who's a metalhead from the last decade or so, has at least heard of Floor.
@@War624 Obviously you are not too familiar with Floor and how versatile she is. You might be surprised with her vocals in her former bands like After Forever, Revamp & Northward, and also with her as a featured vocalist with e.g. Ayreon, Soilwork & Evergrey, not to mention her current band Nightwish.
I like to imagine how Rogers would react to hearing this, were he still with us today. He would've been 70. Nathan would've pulled up a recording on his computer (which he probably wouldn't know how to use), and played it for him as he sat and listened studiously. Then... Slowly.. Carefully... Considerately... Stan would've lifted his right hand and made the devil horns for the first time in his life.

Me: I get it now! Brittney's seeing alternate versions of her life, versions of her and her bandmates that they would have been if they didn't decide to become the band they are today. She's reflecting on her life and her journey to get there, and in the end she "defeats" the version of herself that doubts her self-worth.

This song just hits me every time. It's especially poignant right now, as my wife is starting her own business after being suddenly let go from a great job. She's starting the search for her own Northwest Passage, and I am behind her every step of the way. I tear up hearing the strong female vocals and relating it to the strongest woman in my life.
Tears every damn time.
Glad to know that Stan Rogers songs are still remembered :P
Once heard,they are never forgotten.
Such a good timing that this cover of a song talking about a part of Canada's History is released the same week as Parks Canada release a stunning video of the HMS Terror, one of the fabled ships of the 1845 Franklin Expedition that set sail from England in search of a Northwest Passage.

Many Edmontonians take the Anthony Henday journey every day.
This is Folk music in the truest sense--celebrating the achievements of our ancestors, not tearing them down. This is what our music should be. This is what our music *would* be, if we had not welcomed a certain wandering tribe in from the desert...

Stan Rogers' original version of this song is my favourite song of all time. Unleash the Archers is my favourite band. The first time I saw this pop up in my suggestions I thought: "huh, that's funny, imagine if it was a cover of THAT song." Then I listened to it.
Cut to me screaming along to this in my sitting room. I was honestly in tears by the end. This version is incredible. Britney's voice is fucking so perfect and versatile, the verses are so moving, and when it kicks up a notch the sheer freaking emotion from herself and the boys is so overwhelming and positive, the sense of adventure and closure, exploring for the sake of it, especially if you listen to the lyrics.
This is special. This is important, and this is the song I listen to when i feel down. Fucking well done you guys.
I agree with pretty much everything you said here
100%, though The Mary Ellen Carter is my ‘down feeling’ song of choice. Just divorced after 14 years together and that song’s the only thing that keeps me going.
