These Farmers are the givers of the world. Such selflessness. And as proof, look at peanut prices. They’ve been by far the cheapest nut in any form for years. And they’re healthier than sunflower seeds.

I Grew my first crop of Virginia variety peanuts this year in Cumberland County near the Appomattox river basin where the soil is close to sandy loam and i did pretty good considering the soil composition and lack of first year minerals etc,. that i needed. My "Nuts" were rather large and often triple hulled and came out with a rich full flavor and roasted very nicely and also made a wonderful Peanut soup and also a Peanut Pie for the Holidays. I fertilized my first year crop with 10 year old Composted Cow manure to jump start the process for next years crop also. We hauled in over 1000 yards of Composted manure and will switch over next year to conventional fertilizer mixtures.

I’m 68 and when I was in middle school my uncle planted peanuts for several years after I met him until he passed away. He farmed with a mule. The peanuts would be harvested and piled up in “shocks” he called them. The shocks woulddry in the field. The vines went to his cattle that roamed free range back then. The peanuts were sold, traded for pecans and such. The rest would be eaten by the family and they were parched and eaten or my aunt would make them into a pie, kind of like a pecan pie. Very tasty. I remember him saying they were Spanish peanuts.

The backstory of peanuts and George Washington Carver, was that after reconstruction, the federal government allotment programs effectively prohibited the former slaves from growing cotton or tobacco. The Federal Government bought much of the crop.
