- I still can't believe I made my own peanut butter with peanuts I grew in my backyard! It took 6 whole months including curing time, but it was well worth it, and Im going to grow them again next year just because they're so easy!
All they need is plenty of sun, and some debatable amount of water, and that's it! Are you going to try to grow peanuts this year?

It warms my heart to know there's someone out there who loves peanut butter as much as I do.
I feel your joy, that is why I love gardening.
Those have to be THE MOST BEAUTIFUL peanuts I've ever seen in my life! Congratulations on your awesome grow!
Thank you thank you!! I love love love the striped variety. So pretty
While you admired the beauty of the peanuts I was distracted by the beauty of the green nails!
I had a random plant come up in one of my raised beds and had no idea what it was. So I used my plant ID app, and found it was a peanut plant! I couldn't figure it out, as I've never planted peanuts, but then I realized, I give whole peanuts in the shells to the birds and squirrels, so I assume a squirrel must have done some gardening for me. I'm looking forward to see what I get from my one little plant. Haha! I'm pretty sure it won't be as pretty as yours. I'm also in NC, in Chapel Hill and it had never occurred to me to try and grow them.
I love how you were so stoked throughout the whole process!
Nothing makes me happier!
Now I really want to experiment with peanuts in my garden. Just the idea of making the worlds best PB&J sandwich on homemade sourdough, with my homemade jam and PB just sounds delightful. I have a small garden so it would probably only be enough for a couple sandwiches. But my garden is more for fun & experimentation than high production.
I feel the same way about my garden. The more fun and experimental it is, the better! I hope your peanut growing journey goes well!
I'm definitely curious if you decided to do an unirrigated bed this year 😊!
Questions:
How long is the shelf life, just the ingredients you provided us?
Can it be water bath canned for longer storage or does it have to be pressure cooked?
If you don't make peanut butter, how long do the cured in shell peanuts last? Roasted peanut last? Boiled peanuts?
Thanks for posting, it looks like quite the enjoyable adventure! ❤
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I am married to the son of a peanut farmer so it brought back a lot of memories of us hauling p-nuts to the dryers after picking. As for the watering of the plants, my father-in-law always yielded more p-nuts per acre on the irrigated land. I really enjoyed your video. Keep up the excellent work!
These peanuts are dressed to impress, omg :D I'm in zone 8b and for some reason I had no idea peanuts could grow in zone 8! I may have to try that this summer!
They really are! I love their striping, it makes them so beautiful! Zone 8 is perfect for growing peanuts!! You’ve gotta give them a try if you can ❤️
How exciting!! I purchased some Tennessee reds that I'll be dropping in ground tomorrow 🎉
The sweet taste 👅 of the labor and patience. Thanks 🙏 for sharing your amazing 😻 experience.
Namaste 🙏
I love peanuts and for years in Africa, we grow them next to corn
Above ground beds need irrigation because that are above ground. I stopped buying consumer gardening gear and switched to in ground gardening with tree trimming company wood chip mulch as a cover on top of the ground preventing sun from striking and drying out my ground. Even in stage D4 drought in Texas I never watered the in ground garden and it flourished. Lots of watermelons and cantaloupe melons. If that didn't teach me a life long lesson I don't know what have.
I would love to garden in ground but the soil here is just so clay and dense. Would’ve taken me years to amend it. I have started working on a few small in ground patches though and having some success.
@@meggrowsplants my soil is almost completely clay. It's called Black Gumbo Clay locally.
I’m going to be growing these this year!!! I’m so excited!
Ohhh, what a gorgeous harvest! I'm not sure it's possible to grow peanuts in the UK, even in a greenhouse, but you've cruising made me want to experiment with them. Unrelated to gardening, love your emerald nail polish, it suits you great.
It could MAYBE be possible if you start them indoors and choose a cold hardy variety like the northern Valencia hardy. If I were you, I would experiment with it! And thank you so much!
Great video! Thanks for sharing your experience. I will be growing some peanuts this summer.
Great video Meg, love your enthusiasm, its inspiring.
I grew peanuts last year too. From peanuts off Amazon that were meant for boiling. You got a much larger harvest than I did
I will definitely be growing peanuts next year! Thanks for the inspiration!
That was amazing!!! I so want to grow my own peanut butter! Those peanuts were beautiful! thank you for sharing pretty lady Meg!
This is your sign to do it! It’s so fun. Thank you so much ❤️❤️
Well done! I love the striping on these peanuts. I am really interested in attempting to grow these now, I’m not far from you in zone 7a and hoping to give them a try this year or next!
P.s. I love your nails! It’s not very common to see other female gardeners with cute nails and I love all the different sets you had in this video 😊 love your content Meg!
Thank you so much! You could definitely grow them in 7a. You may need to start them indoors first though just to get a little bit of a head start. But definitely experiment with that! And thank you, they’re mostly press ons! I love wearing them but I also pretty much have to to protect my real nails. I have Hashimotos and it makes my real nails so thin and brittle so the press ons give them a barrier especially when I’m gardening! Plus, they’re just fun 💅🏼
These type of peanuts is so beautiful❤❤
Thank you for sharing learned so much!!
Hi Meg. I'm growing peanuts for the 1st time as well. I want to make a fertilizer using them. Thanks for sharing.
This video is inspiring...I'm ABT to plant my peanuts today... Appreciate the inspiration v much💌⭐✌🏽
you are quickly becoming my favorite channel lol
I would totally do this! I don’t eat peanut butter I do like roasted peanuts, so I may give this a try. Thanks for sharing! 😊
Im going to try it!
Report back on how it goes!
You can go to a really good bakery and get really good bread for a good price. But making bread on your own is a totally different experience. These things are no joke. You grew those mfing peanuts.
SUCH a good point!!! There’s just something about doing it yourself that is so fulfilling. I grew these mfing peanuts!
Great video! Tks for the explanation! 🔝
Thank you (:
I’m so interested in your experiment !
I'm obsessed with this
& im obsessed w/ you
@@meggrowsplants 😘 😘
Very impressive 👏
They resemble. Potatoes flower and stems above fruit below
I ordered peanuts the first time this year, very well timed 👌
Awesome!! So excited for you to grow them! They’re so fun
@meggrowsplants my first "job" was pulling weeds out of peanut fields when I was 4-5 years old, it's about time the peanut fields are mine 💪 (by fields I mean maybe a 4'×4' garden block lol)
What variety did you grow? Where did you get your seeds? This is fantastic
The variety is called Fastigiata Pin Striped and I got them from southern exposure seed exchange!
I have been growing them .
Hello Meg this video was great very informative. I’m going to grow peanuts this year in a grow bag I don’t know if that’s a great idea but I want to give it a try. I probably won’t get as much peanuts 😂 question when did you plant your peanuts? I don’t want to plant mine too early or too late.
Hi there!! Thank you! You can grow them in grow bags, but you’re right. You may not get a ton of peanuts. Usually each plant produces 10-20 peanuts in my experience. And you could get away with maybe planting 2-3 plants in a 20 gallon grow bag. As far as when you plant, what zone are you in? You should plant after the last frost and the soil is warm!
I thought they grew on a bush. Lol
Excellent video
Well, they kind of do “bush out” with their foliage when they’re growing, but all of the delicious peanuts are underground!
Loved this video! Definitely want to try growing peanuts oneday in containers through! Also I heard that you don't harvest until the plant starts to yellow! I wonder
See, I thought so as well. But frost came and mine never yellowed. And it had been over 150 days. So I just went by the days to harvest instead of the yellowing 🤷🏻♀️
@@meggrowsplants that makes a lot of sense!!! Worked well I think
Hi. Link to the food processor please I’ve been wanting a really good one.
we call them groundnuts in Ghana!
15:13 min/sec. Had to replay that expression reaction to the first taste of homemade homegrown peanut butter. 😅
1:40 The German word for "peanut" is "Erdnuß" which actually means "earth nut" or "soil nut". However, I'm pretty sure many of us Germans don't even know why! ;)
Honestly that makes so much more sense! I’ve heard that it is like that in other languages as well. Someone told me that in Danish it means “ground nut”. Would take away a lot of the confusion lol
@@meggrowsplantsa lot of our older language made more literal sense. Modern English has lost so many old words and borrowed so many new words we lose the literal easy meanings, for example Middle English sykhous, and similar forms in other Scandinavian and Germanic languages is Sick House, where you go when you are sick. After the French invaded England a lot of French loan words came in. “Ospital”, being Old French is the basis for Hospital today.
Hi Meg!
Hi there!!
I grew them for the flowers.
Their flowers are so cute!
Do you have to cure them if you plan to boil them? I love boiled peanuts I don't really care for roasted peanuts or peanut butter. I purchase some seeds this year and hope to grow enough to have at least one small pot of boil peanuts. Finding fresh green peanuts where I am is very difficult. When I lived in NYC I could find them in the Korean stores periodically but since I moved to New Jersey I haven't seen them at all
“This is not a ton of peanuts” *thinks about Kevin’s pitiful peanut harvest video*
Hahahahaha I’m always teasing him about him and Jacques tiny little harvests 😂
❤❤❤❤❤
When did you stop watering?
no chaos planting for peanuts?
How do you keep the squirrels out
Build a cage of chicken wire .. the little demons can't go through 1/4 " contractor mesh.. where do you order your seed stock???
I just received my valencia peanut seeds. Planning on trying them in a 50 gallon grow bag in Southern Ontario 🤞🏼 mine as well try for fun
Ahhh good luck! You’ll have to let me know how that goes! I’ve heard of northern gardeners having much luck with northern hardy Valencia.
What zone are you in? I'm in zone 9b
Zone 8a, formerly zone 7b!
Welcome to the peanut gallery. The refs so far are a joke. Sober up and get your eyeballs calibrated.
Don’t even know what this means lol
yeah that peanut taste bland.
Noooo way
@@meggrowsplants I'm going to make my own bland peanut butter.
Can you hook me up with me with seeds. I have a bigger yard than you. But my brother has a business in Las Vegas . HI 2 sin. But he sells peanuts i am his older that just want to make him proud to make him proud! I will do my best so I ask the best of peanut s. K aloha
