Oh, when you whistle down the wind
When you needle the dark with your mind
When you're firing volleys of words in an arc
When you're snuffing out all that's still alive
    And a droplet falls
    From the dropper's eye
    Blooms like a wave
That slowly overruns all of your days
    And slips the caul
    From off your eyes
    You face alone
A fear that's dragging us all in its wake
    And you kill the lights
    I know
    You're in the river now
And you yield to the water's embrace
And you lie like a stone on the banks, giving out
As it carries off all of our names
    I know that sound
    I know what it likes
    I know it feels
Like all the guns of a battery trained
    Right at your eyes
    Because it's real
    Because it pulls
A thread of slowly unraveling days
    Annihilates
    Your mother tongue
    Your only light
    But hold this sound
    Follow it all the way
    And put down the knife
    The night is here
But still is spinning out stars in its wake
    And that stubborn light
    Pools in your heart
    Warm and nacreous, baby
    The milk of sighs
    And dreams

What is funny, I thought this is so hard song to get right live, but they did it beautifully! Down to perfect harmonics. Such a haunting, melancholy song that pulls you right in.

How can this sound so clumsy and genius all at once?... This is one of the most puzzlingly beautiful piece of live music I've ever heard. 💜

Absolutely the best indie band in the business then, and now. So intense, but without any of that b.s. indie self-consciousness. Shearwater, they rule.

Oh my God. The droplet falls from the dropper's eye... This gave me the shivers. What a voice. So deep and soft.

Jonathan Meiburg says the song is about a reckoning with suicide, what he calls a robocall from the universe. But to me it also reads as one of the great emblems of the psychedelic experience. “And the droplet falls / from the dropper’s eye…”

The 'down the wind' part of the phrase comes from the sport of falconry. When hawks are released to hunt they are sent upwind and when turned loose for recreation they are sent downwind. Thus, to 'whistle someone/thing down the wind' is to cast it off to its own fate. Shakespeare alluded to this in Othello, 1604:
If I do prove her haggard, Though that her jesses [leather straps] were my dear heartstrings, I'ld whistle her off and let her down the wind, To pray at fortune.
The first appearance of the phrase as we now know it that I can find in print comes from Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, 1826:
Surely someone who can whistle down the wind this painful weakness of his nature ... is an anomaly, not a man.

I can't explain why I like this song... But I do. Maybe the soft-spoken voice, maybe the simple but perfect guitar arrangements. Or maybe the conjunction of all.

He's utterly mesmerising on this... such a fantastic groove, so crisply & cleanly played, amazing feel, and he looks almost more into it than any drummer I've seen! Meiburg picks amazing musicians to play with him.
