  • Here's a test of the Emergency Broadcast System (EBS) as broadcast on WGN Channel 9.
    If the tone sounds off to you, it's because they screwed-up and only used the 853 Hz tone, instead of a combo of 853 and 960 Hz, as required.
    Voiceover by Merri Dee.
    This aired on local Chicago TV on Thursday, April 10th 1980 during the 12:00pm to 1pm timeframe.
    About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:
    The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels; footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical purposes. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to DVD, and to view more of the 4,700+ (and counting) video clips available for viewing in our online archive, please visit us at:

    Seems like WGN’s EBS encoder was on the fritz. That tone was the 853 Hz part of the dual-tone Attention Signal. The other part, a 960 Hz tone, isn’t present here.

    At the end of the attention tone, you can hear someone turning a page for the voiceover to read the script of the alert

    The old Civil Defense shield was one of the scarier things to see as a child. Very stark.

    Oopsie. Only one of the tones of the two-tone EBS attention signal got through.

    Must have been a technical fault with their EBS alert system that particular broadcast day.

    This is only a test...too bad WGN failed! :-D And clearly, someone wasn't minding the store here, given the slight gap between the opening VO and the actual test transmission.

      bkrbyex4339 - Many stations used the old Civil Defense logo as part of their EBS test graphics for years, such as Chicago's WFLD, Dallas-Ft. Worth's WFAA, and NY's WNBC

      Chuck D's All-New Classic TV Clubhouse didn't WMAQ, use one of those CD logos in their EBS tests, before they decided to retire them, in the 90's? also WBBM ch 2 Chicago, had a CD logo, set against a burlap background. now anybody recorded these on a betamax?

    • @JohnHolton
      @JohnHolton Před 6 lety +2

      To the best of my knowledge, WMAQ never used the Civil Defense shield, but WBBM did.
