- In retrospective, we’re going to dive into each Modern Warfare game in the Trilogy. We’re going to look at the masterful craftsmanship of each game. The supreme command over pacing, and how the rollercoaster each game embodies is so fine-tuned. We’re going to look at how this craftsmanship allows the developers’ ambition to shine through, as the series pushes to amaze, excite, and even horrify you.
The original Modern Warfare Trilogy is the perfect storm of talent and ambition.
Chapter Breaks:
1:27 Modern Warfare
29:43 Modern Warfare 2
1:17:17 Modern Warfare 3

Thanks for watching everyone! This is a supercut of my prior modern warfare videos, and the series was a blast to make. I hope you enjoyed the video as much as I enjoyed making it!
Marine veteran here. You are correct about churches. Under the Geneva Conventions of 1949, they are considered "indispensable to civilian survival" and objects used for worship (like a Quran or rosary beads) are given the same importance and protection as medical supplies.
Thank you for the insight! Appreciate it.
Problem comes when the bad guys use the place of worship as a base for there criminal activities
@ReggieMan85 Yep. Then it becomes an international incident waiting to happen.
All Islamic crap needs to be taken off that list
@@leonrussell9607Absolutely not. Just because you disagree with their beliefs it doesn’t mean that the temples and other religious objects should be allowed to be destroyed or vandalized. I hope you’re just an internet troll because if you’re serious then you need to reevaluate your life and your beliefs.
Them saying the civil war in Russia and 15k nukes being "just another day in the office" while the bad news to them is a new guy joining the team just shows how bad ass these guys are
For sure! Such a great way to set the tone
Flashback scenes like All Ghillied Up are perfect for heavily scripted moments. It allows you to play the memory, while it plays the exact same every time, as if it's unchanging, like how history is. Flashback missions are the best possible use case for scripted missions
Never thought of that connection between linearity and flashbacks before! It’s an interesting point. Thanks for sharing
the twist of price setting the EMP off to save the rangers gets me so hype lmao
It’s so well done! I love that part.
It’s crazy all the perspectives sync at that one moment

When I initially played COD4:MW when I was 9, my game bugged out and wouldn't let me leave the helicopter. I was just left, stuck on a burning helicopter with the half conscious, bloodied body of a fellow marine. Eventually, I just decided to wait, watching the sparking lights on a fusebox in the helicopter. All I could see of the outside world was a small window, showing nothing but a mushroom cloud. It let me sit there and think about what just went down. After about a minute , the game just let the character bleed out and everything fade. For the longest time, I thought this bugged moment was actually how it was designed, and I still think it felt perfect. A dying marine, simply watching the sparks on a broken helicopter light up, indulging in his thoughts for a little while until death. It wasn't until around 2018 when my buddies and I played CoD4:MW Remastered that I realized what I experienced was a glitch that still fit the storytelling perfectly
Oh interesting! I am glad the glitch ended up working out to make the game’s story even more resonant. It’s cool when you get unique experiences with the story like that. Thanks for sharing
06:30 AM and haven’t slept. This is exactly what I needed right now
Definitely have had those nights haha! Thanks for checking out the video.
6:21am rn
6:04 am for me
I think the big difference between the original trilogy and newer cods is “show don’t tell”- in the originals you don’t need to be told that taking the gloves off is messy, like price having to tell that to gaz/player. Instead you see stuff like ghost about to torture Rojas and price detonating a nuke
Definitely! I did feel like the newer games hammered that in a little too hard. The older games felt a lot more natural as far as portraying gray moral situations
I didn’t mind it in mw2019 cuz it made for a good scene/quote but then it just kept being restated in slightly different words and just lost its muster. The og trilogy does it so much better
@@austinlarrimore6542 that’s fair, I think the first time worked ok but it just kept being repeated throughout the rest of the game
@@gatsbysgarage8389 it’s like when you need extra words in a essay to meet the word count so you just keep restating the same shit in different ways and it gets you there but in the process kinda ruins your essay😂
I love cod 4's AC130 mission. I know people personally who have worked in AC130's, and they have told me that the banter and chatter coming from the AC130 crew members in that mission, is very realistic.
Such a great mission! It’s cool that you could confirm its authenticity with people you know. Thanks for sharing!
There is actually a reason as to why MW3's ending is abrupt, a day before this video was uploaded, someone was able to restore a deleted post-credits scene in which Price sees a unknown character entering the Hotel after killing Makarov, after the unknown character leaves Price passes out and seemingly dies, the screen fades to black and the OP Kingfish photo is shown afterwards.
Unfortunately nobody really knows what this scene was supposed to mean, who the unknown character is or why the scene was cut in the first place. I have seen some say it was Death taking Price's body although it sounds a bit weird imo, while others say it was a tease for an unreleased MW4 that got replaced by Ghosts.
Either way i thought it would be interesting to talk about this.
That makes a lot of sense! Yeah I heard about the new cutscene, pretty crazy it’s been uncovered so many years later. Thanks for sharing!
1:35:35
You're actually pretty spot on, Shepard and Sandman have history, as they were all part of an operation that happened between MW1 and MW2, called Operation Kingfish. This is hinted at in Soap's Journal that you get as part of MW2's collector's edition, in the form of a photo of the group before the Op. As well as a prequel movie that was released, called Find Makarov: Operation Kingfish. You should check it out
Interesting! Someone mentioned this on my other video too. Good to know it’s not all in my head lol. Thank you for sharing!
OG MW trilogy: unique, creative, unexpected, full of surprises
Reboot MW trilogy: repeat of same ideas only with censorship now( New No Russian), predictable plot twists
I think the reboot did have a few interesting innovations like the night vision missions, but overall I agree. They don’t quite capture the same spark as the OG trilogy. Thanks for watching!
@@calvinfishermedia I did like the ghost and soap relationship, as well as the whole El Sin Nombre plot. I'm just vexxed that Soap was killed by Makarov (again), General Shepherd did a betrayal (again) and Shepherd died( in the form of a cutscene in a cutscene filled game)
Thats the reason why you can go back and replay og mw trilogy and still feel like your playing it for the first time
It plays it safer for sure, but the missions also feel much truer to life, which helps it a lot.
We need this but for the COD Black Ops Series
I hope to cover them at some point soon! Have a few other videos I want to make first. Thanks for watching!
One thing I’ve always noticed about modern warfare one, is how the Americans go into the Middle East, full of bravado thinking that it will be very easy to find Al-Asad. It’s telling that they have no reason to be there, and one of the first things you see in the American campaign is oil rigs and derricks. The Marines are brutally killed by insurgents, and although they technically have the better fire power - they are nearly always at a disadvantage.
They attack a tv station, and Al-Sad was never there. They then have to rescue a tank miles off where it’s meant to be, and only barely do so. They have to wait with said tank all night, presumably not getting any rest. Finally they then have to escort the tank through busy streets, constantly being flanked and dogged by untrained terrorists wielding very old weaponry. Finally they attack Al-Sad’s palace, saving an outnumbered squad and a downed pilot - for then thousands to be killed by a Soviet era warhead.
My point is that in many respects, it was showing how this has happened so many times. A bigger, seemingly more powerful nation (who had no right to be there) to be totally overran by an technologically inferior enemy.
This is an interesting way to look at it! I haven’t thought of it this way before but I can see it. Thanks for sharing!
@@calvinfishermedia That’s okay. I was slightly wary to put that comment, because I was worried that people would confuse what I was saying for the real US Military - which of course it wasn’t. 😃
1:42:18 just a heads up, they aren’t fighting in London, they’re fighting in Prague
You’re right, I did get that twisted! Thanks for watching
You mentioned that you don’t know why Price trusts Sandman. That’s because you left some important parts of the story out. 1, Operation Kingfish which was a short film about TF141 attempting to hunt down Makarov. In the film Sandman and Frost are seen as a Delta force sniper team working with TF141 on the operation. Also this shows how Price was captured in the first place and sent to the gulag. 2, mile high club. Mile high club is one of the first operations TF141 does and at the end of the mission they rescue a hostage who gives them intel on Makarov. Not too important to the story but still gives TF141 some lore that pieces everything together. Also a side note is that it seems to be implied that MW2019 was originally meant to be a MW trilogy prequel but was later turned into a reboot with them setting it in the modern day. That’s just unconfirmed piece of information that I think people should look into because it starts to make sense. I mean really all they had to do was change the year from the early 2000s to 2019, change Gaz from white to black and make him younger, and then change some various other details.
Thanks for sharing the added context! And that is interesting about MW2019, I can definitely see that being the case
Your videos made want to replay the campaigns again. I just got MW2 remastered on sale and will be playing it later.
Nice!! Love the remastered campaign! I think they did a great job with it. Thanks for watching!
Bro you’re underrated af I don’t understand how this doesn’t have any likes 😾😾
Thank you for the kind words, I really appreciate it!
Loved each video and glad they got compiled, keep up the awesome work and looking forward to your future growth!
Thank you I really appreciate that!!
Ive been up since 3 am, cant sleep. And now im watching your video, and its awesome. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for watching, I really appreciate it! Sorry you had trouble sleeping, insomnia is never fun.
You saying that the modern warfare trilogy is a perfect storm, and me finding this video after losing all 3 of my original discs, then getting the first 2 games from my grandfather, and finding the 3rd for 10 bucks cash. And getting to play through the entire trilogy myself and let all the memories and emotions of the story sink in once again. Is truly the perfect storm for me.
Nice, I’m glad the timing worked out well for you! I hope you enjoy replaying through the trilogy!
I had always been more of a fan of the Black Ops games, but playing this trilogy is always great fun
Black Ops 1 and 2 are amazing campaigns for sure. I enjoyed Cold War, but I feel like I’m still waiting for the third great Black Ops campaign. Thanks for watching!
I think a really cool aspect of this trilogy is that it’s telling Price’s story through the eyes of others, and you never play as him (save for a flashback) until the final mission
Good point! It is interesting to see Price from so many various perspectives like Yuri, Price, and Roach
What’s up next on the docket? Maybe the WaW/Black Ops 1+2 since was all know they didn’t make anymore BO games
I’m doing Destiny 1 next, a bit of a curveball lol! Hope to cover the waw/black ops games eventually though! Black ops 1 especially is one of my favorite cod games of all time
@@calvinfishermedia BO2 is my absolute favorite COD both multiplayer and campaign looking forward to Destiny video there isn’t too much story to cover at least in game from my memory but I enjoy your review/essays/critiques
@@Nixus237 BO2 is a COD that grew on me a lot over time! It's campaign is definitely one of the most innovative in the series. Thanks for the kind words!
@calvinfishermedia whaaaaaaaaat?? Destiny 1? God that game holds a special place with me, I'm very excited for video!
@@MrHellohorse awesome!! Hope you enjoy the video!!
Shepard’s line of “I lost 30,000 men in the blink of an eye… and the world just fuckin watched.” Is such a great line and is perfect for establishing his motivation for the entire game
An awesome retrospective to start my day going into summer classes.
Thanks for watching! Best of luck with the summer classes!
1:30:00 when you’re talking about the gas attack and that it would’ve been better showing from the SAS POV, it actually does. If you turn off mature content it completely skips over the family and stays as the SAS
Oh, that is super interesting! I didn’t know that. Thanks for sharing!
This video perfectly explains why i kept replaying the MW2 campaign the most back in the day. I even bought MW2 remastered.
I love MW2 remastered as well! I think they did such a great job. Thanks for watching!
It's crazy how we don't have mw3 remaster.
great video! i also love mw2, i think it takes itself seriously enough to have a compelling story whilst having a blast and having us hold the burger town
I think this is a great way to sum the game up! Thanks for watching!
Amazing video, really enjoyed the whole experience. ✌️
Thanks I really appreciate it! Glad you enjoyed the video!
To me, the grey palete of mw3 shows how the violence and atrocities have become the new normal, right from the beginning. Compared to previous games where the palete slowly turns more and more dark red to indicate a decent into chaos, mw3 starts out in chaos, and slowly crawls its way back out.
That’s an interesting interpretation! I didn’t think of it like that. It makes a lot of sense! Thanks for sharing
Great video, now I’m waiting for an entire Black Ops campaign retrospective 👍
Thanks for watching! I love the Black Ops games too (BO1 is pretty neck and neck with MW2 for me campaign wise). Hope to cover them soon! I have a couple other videos in the works first :)
Two minutes into the video i liked and subbed. Excellent work. The only thing i would offer is to try and sound more natural. Im still gonna watch the entire video. Youre gonna blow up
Definitely fair criticism! I’ve been working on my narration voice and hope to keep making improvement. Thanks for the kind words!
Fun fact
after soap dies
Price has alternative lines for Yuri in the following stealth mission
At on point price tells Yuri to take someone down and if u take long enough Price will says something along the lines of "what's wrong lost ur edge? lemme show u how it's done" and then proceed to do the takedown himself
likewise later in the level a similar alternative line can be heard if u don't blow up the bridge in time
Oh interesting! I didn’t know about that. Thank you for sharing!
56:39 Another thing about this mission, you don't see the beginning mission text with the mission name/setting until after you exit the bunker and realize yourself that you're in Washington DC
Ah, that is a good point! Thanks for sharing!
Dude watching this video brought back alot of memories lol the ranger missions from mw2 are my favorite as well! I only forgot that mission is why I always get excited whenever I see the burger town sign in every game
I love the burger town references too! I remember being really excited for that Advanced Warfare zombies map because it took place at a burger town lol.
First time watching definitely subscribing
Thanks I really appreciate that! I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
Fun fact, in COD4, if you shoot at the car Yuri and Makarov are in during all ghilied up, you will get a friendly fire failure. None of the other vehicles have a failure state applied to them. I believe this was added in a patch before MW3 released to maintain continuity between games.
MW2 was the first FPS game I ever played and I still remember playing MW2/MW3 multiplayer with my siblings for hours and hours after school. and the Spec Ops missions trying to beat them all on Veteran and failing time and again until we got it.
Only in the past year have i had a chance to try MW1 and damn is it great!
Thank you for this video sharing your look on these games that played (pun intended) such a pivotal reason why I value good storytelling and gameplay in whatever I play.
Man, the spec ops missions are so awesome in this game too! Glad you got the chance to try out MW1. Thanks for watching, I appreciate it!
I almost feel like we should thank the reboot for bringing people back to the original trilogy. 🤣
True! I suppose that is the silver lining with any reboot haha!
Very good vid, quick note: a pre-mission brief relays information prior to mission execution, while a post-mission brief, or ‘debrief’, occurs after the fact to conduct mission analysis and review lessons learned during mission execution.
Thanks for the correction! I appreciate that info.
There a deleted scene where a man in a suit walks in, looks at price then walks away and then price dies
I just saw it a few days ago, it’s really interesting! It changes the feeling of the ending a ton.
How I think the "shock" scene from MW3 could've been better, still including the family, would've been to show their vacation. Their house still in tatters from the war in the states (haven't played MW3 in a while, I think they're American) and such they take a vacation to get from the destruction. They arrive, recording the airport, the trip to their destination, visits around London and just bits around the hotel room, getting to know the family. Overcoming losses while the kids sleeps, having fun in another environment, bit like this. The way it would be shown could've been between missions. Before or maybe even after each mission brief. Starting at the start of the game, all the way up to this point.
Then the bomb.
Have the van near miss them as they cross a narrow street, heading to Big Ben. Have the husband or wife react to the driver with choice words as the van disappears down the narrow street. The cuss to each other as they walk off. Then the bomb detonates. The parents fall as the affect of the gas soon castles them. Its a slow, painful scene to watch as the parents are on the floor riding in pain. Through the smoke the little kid's silhouette is seen stumbling. Forward coughing, crying. The parents fall silent as the kid fall into her mothers arms, vegging her for help before silence falls upon the family. Distant panicking heard before that too soon falls quiet as the gas takes them. Leaving the camera recording for a while. Still on the family, lead there.
Far more affective I think. I get the unrealistic nature of the child standing longer than her parents, but come on. From what the game throws at us prior to this event.
Thanks for sharing! I think some sort of buildup and seeing the family beforehand would have helped the scene land better too!
1:50:38 something I always wondered with Delta Force in the mission. Where's Frost? Was with them rest of the game and could've made it even more wretching to see our player go down too, though it could overshadow the other squad members
Man, I have to play through one of these games at least once a year, mostly MW3 as I’ve personally always loved it as the best one, but the other 2 are still masterpieces in their own right.
They're so fun to revisit! It's nice that they can be beaten in a weekend, so I like replaying them between longer games.
@@calvinfishermedia Honestly it’s crazy to me that I loved the MW3 so much that when I finally got it again after a couple years of not playing it, I ended up beating it in Veteran within the span of 2 days.
@@locosword3985 Nice, veteran in 2 days is pretty impressive!
@CalvinFisherMedia fyi, it was discovered a few hours ago that someone looked into the MW3 gamefiles and found what appears to be a cut post-credit scene for Dust to Dust.
Oh interesting! I will have to check that out. Thanks for sharing!
You should check out the post credit scene that was cut. Came out about a week or two ago and it’s mind blowing
Just checked it out! Pretty wild how it was uncovered after so many years!
Mw2 is the perfect fps story to me because it wholly encapsulates two of the top storyline types and does so to near perfection you get the high octane james bond esc escapades of task force 141 which borders on the ridiculous then the grounded patriotic defense of the homeland specifically the mission where you storm the white house in a race against the clock is a showcase moment
For sure! Definitely agree with you. The 141 and Ranger missions contrast so well.
46:51 this still gives me goosebumps, brings me back to my childhood and it’s one of the best COD missions of all time imo. Also Have you seen the new ending cutscene for the OG MW3 that some dude dug up? I’ll give a link for it
czcams.com/video/De7Axarv12E/video.htmlsi=8Syyg0lOu0cMJLU2
The Ranger missions in MW2 are my absolute favorites. I just heard about the new cutscene! Crazy it was discovered after so long. Thanks for watching!
18:55 true but this mission is a NIGHTMARE on veteran
That definitely makes sense. I haven't played on Veteran, but I imagine all of those angles enemies can come from is a nightmare to handle haha
15:34 he’s actually needs to soften up resistance for the ground assault, not the air as said in the objective
Thanks for the correction!
28:23 Pretty sure they did get accomindations, just not publically. Since after his death in 3 you can see Soap has several British millitary accomidations which include the Victoria cross which is the highest award, which seems more likely for events as SAS in CoD4 rather than an international task force that had him branded an international terrorist by the end of it
Ramirez protect the Burger Town
Ramirez gets put to work in this game lol

Awesome video, such a shame that CoD lost its spark for me after BO2, I still sometimes replay all the old campaigns back to back
Thanks for watching! I am a fan of some of the newer campaigns, but the consistent quality of MW-BO2 is definitely missed. Each of those campaigns was spectacular
You know it's a super cut, when you realise the MW2 mistake is still there. 😂 It's a Boneyard in Afghanistan and a Safehouse in the Caucasus, not the other way around.
Still, those videos are great!
Lol definitely true! Thanks for watching!!
Surprised you didn’t use the Modern Warfare remastered with updated graphics for the Cod4 campaign cover
I did consider it, but since I played the original versions I didn’t want to give people the wrong impression! I played the originals because there isn’t an mw3 remastered. Thanks for watching!
Black ops series!!
I hope to cover black ops soon! Have a few other videos first but hopefully after that!
i love call of duty campaigns. cod4 and mw3 will always be some of my favorite ones. i think black ops trilogy is also really fun too. Oh no i dont mean black ops 3 although that game is fun mostly due to zombies. i mean waw-bo2. the true black ops trilogy in my eyes. i enjoy all 6 of these games including advanced warfare, primarily for gameplay aspect. call of duty will always have such a special place in my heart
Definitely with you there! Those six games are all so special. Quite the run.
Price trust sandman is because of operation kingfisher which was a short film.
Edit, you should also pay a bit more attention to the radio in the background of the delta missions in mw3, especially in iron lady. Also with that mission i found lower difficulty setting ruin what it was going for but it comes accross super well on higher difficulties as you more or less start seeing huge numbers of russian vehicles and soldiers pouring in and start to feel hopeless only for the airsupport to rip through destroying the remaining supports of the tower while hitting the russians as the people on the ground are more important.
Ha i suck at writing and hate howlong i made that but i hope i got what im saying across
they need to remaster COD: MW3 (with additional cutscenes and that hidden cutscene discovered where Price passes out/dies) - btw GREAT VIDEO with the info
I hope they do a MW3 remastered as well! Thanks for watching.
@@calvinfishermedia fingers crossed they do remaster it. you are welcome. Keep up the awesome videos and explaining things as there were things I did not know that you made me aware of with in COD.
1:03:07 this actualy has real world logic, the Russian and previous Soviet military was very reliant on its officers, an issue it's facing IRL in ukrane, the US is known for teaching its troops to function in small units and tend to train more autonomy into their forces and have invested much heavier into their NCOs but also even with their officers the ability to quickly establish a new chain of command when links in the existing one get swacked
This is an interesting point! That definitely makes a lot of sense. Thanks for sharing your insight!
Someone finally agrees that MW2 is the best fps campaign 😄
So great! Black ops 1 is neck and neck for me with MW2 as well. Those few years had such amazing campaigns back to back to back
Ur book sounds like the metro exidos if you can only stay in the outside of Moscow
That's a pretty good way to describe it! I love the metro games and they were definitely a source of influence for me.
1:04:58 other way round
Good catch!
I didn’t know Carl wheezer had a CZcams channel
Haven’t heard that comparison before lol! Thanks for checking out the video.
Call of duty 30, MW3, Part 3 2023
As much as I would like to agree with this whole take, I disagree with the last third of the video.
MW3 was meant to show how the entire globe was now active. You’re not going to see vibrant greens, blues, yellows. It’s going to be burning, burnt, and destroyed. Very little color shows how bad things have become, it’s war and war is hell.
Explosives are abundant especially in a warzone. So seeing the explosives go off constantly shows how who we are playing as aren’t in control of the situation.
Maybe I’m looking at it from a logical standpoint or I’m nitpicking.
That is fair! I definitely get your points. The color use is a preference thing for sure. Thanks for watching and sharing your opinion
Why is 4 in the past and 3 In the future???
1:14:02 That's no theory, that's explicitly the story.
When does the game state that Shepherd blew Allen’s cover on purpose? Genuinely curious if I missed something, because I didn’t find it explicitly stated in the game.
@@calvinfishermedia Maybe I exaggerated a bit. Granted it's been a few years since I played. It is however the obvious reading. Kinda like how Shepard being a traiter was so obvious it pissed me off. It's literally Game Trope 2 so I would have been more surprised if it was subverted and he was just GEN Charisma.
@@ChairmanKam fair enough! I know what you mean. General Shepherd’s sinister undertones are definitely prominent in the game. Thanks for checking out the video.
@@calvinfishermedia Of course! Good content! Your Halo Vids got me hooked. Since you blew away mine on the topic, I wanna see you cover Metro.
@@ChairmanKam appreciate it! And I LOVE the metro games. I am planning on covering them eventually!
Modern Warfare 3 is not the game it should've been and could've been, because Infinity Ward fired almost all the talents behind COD4 and MW2, and then out sourced MW3 to 10 different companies to help them make ends meet with it. And the result is pretty showcasing of that. It's all I'm gonna say.
I think some of that development strive comes through in the game. All circumstances considered I think the game turned out pretty well though! Thanks for watching
I see so you don't like no russian, you must be one of those mw remake fans.
You could’ve used remastered gameplay…
True! But since there isn’t an mw3 remastered, so I think it would have looked off. I opted for consistency.
Why though?
@@calvinfishermedia Good choice. The old games look more than good enough anyway
The real legendary devs left after mw2 as did all the actual cod fans. i never supported the bootleg devs after mw2 and skipped the dark ages of cod from mw2 till mw2019 when some came back.
I think Black Ops 1 at the very least is also a gem! Definitely recommend giving the campaign a shot if you haven’t already.
Ok mw2 is good but not better than bo2
It's a tough one for me! BO2 does so many things well too. I think I just prefer the WW3 setting of the MW games more.
Im still disappointed about MW3. Such a mid story and campaign.
I enjoyed it but I can definitely see how you could find it disappointing. Thanks for watching!
You sound like that dry eyes guy. There's like no emotion or enthusiasm in your voice. I came here from the reach video by the way. Even that one was a slog. You would basically just explain things, didn't offer much to the conversation and had no emotion or enthusiasm on display.
Then lad if you think you can do better to "add" to the conversation of very old third generation games please make a retrospective on the series..by all means.. dont critique someone about their voice and video style if you yourself can't do it. Atleast the guy tried and i listened to it while working and idm his flat tone LOL
