What the Final Shape is REALLY about - A Story Analysis
The Final Shape is a momentous conclusion. It’s climatic, and the Light and Darkness saga wraps up in a neat, well-trimmed bow. But what really makes the Final Shape stand out to me is that the campaign truly knows the story it’s telling. Right down to the very bones. So, what is it about? What is this story, down to its barest bones, really about?
Well, in this video essay, we will explore the answer. Final Shape is about finding purpose in a world of chaos.
This. This is what everything in a Final Shape orbits around. And it’s why everything seems to just flow so naturally together in this expansion. It’s because the Final Shape knows the story it’s telling, and it’s laser-focused on it.
In this video essay, we’re going to analyze the Final Shape by examining four characters: the Witness, Cayde-6, Crow, and Zavala. We’re going to see how their stories center around this idea of finding purpose in a world of chaos.

I agree, it will be interesting to see where the story goes in Dawntrail! I am super excited.
Remember us. Remember that we once lived.
One of the best lines in the game! This one hits hard
The real twist is the actual advice at the end where you told us that waiting around for that many hours just to see if the story would click with you is unreasonable. I heartily agree, amen, good sir. Also, second best boy Hien needs more spotlight.
It’s why I love 14 but want to know more about a person’s tastes and interests before recommending it. 14 is a big commitment! Hien is amazing, really he is just about tied with Aymeric for me haha.
I was there during the disaster 1.0 launch in 2010 - and now 14 years later it’s the best MMO ever made and a new expansion is about to be released. What a journey it’s been 🎉
It’s awesome that you were there from the start! Glad to see you are still enjoying the ride
It doesn’t matter how many times I’ve played mw2, the music during shepherds betrayal gives me chills every time
The music hits hard for sure! Thanks for watching
The Strength of FFXIV's writing is that they understand the one key important factor to great character development, and that is, every character, is the hero in their own story, and that includes of course the "villains" who really should be more called antagonists, as no one in the game, no character is truly evil. Everyone does everything for a reason that they truly feel justified in doing. And that is why it naturally evolves into a great story. Great characters lead to great story.
For sure! I think great character development is one of the best things about 14’s story. Every character is given ample attention and justification for their actions
I love the halo ODST story, except... Dare. Her leadership incompetence led to the majority of the problems. If the ODSTs knew their objective, they would have naturally randevoued in the data hive. Not only this, she gets out of her pod and dissappears. If she would have either taken cover, holed up nearby, or fought towards buck, they could have been together immediately and focused on the original mission. Who the hell sends in elite soldiers with no known objectives, then dissappears?
Fair point, I didn’t think of it that way! I wonder if there is a reason for her secrecy at the beginning, as far as not telling the ODSTs
ARR suffers from a lack of focus. It’s hard to know who is important and who will stick around after the story goes on. Meeting Haurchefaunt is way better when you know how important he becomes.
That is definitely fair! It can be hard to follow for sure. Thanks for watching
For me, I tried FFXIV first with the free trial post Stormblood, since some friends at the time were playing it and saying it was good. It never clicked with me then and I never really had fun with it. For reference I never even got to the level 15 MSQ and I thought Job Quests was the main story. Fast forward to 2022, Endwalker had been out for a few months then. I fell down the Runescape video rabbit hole and was considering maybe giving it a try. Then post D&D two of my friends suggested I give it a try again. There had been changes to A Realm Reborn that made it more streamlined. So I gave in despite my distaste for it prior. At the time you couldn't download FFXIV due to the massive player count, but then I remembered I had played it on playstation, it was in my account history. So I was able to redownload it, made a new SE account since I had long forgotten the old one, and created my character. I decided to use one of my D&D OCs as the basis for the character, figuring if nothing else I'd maybe have fun with that. Taking in ARR then was so different from before. I had friends to help explain things to me of course, but just living in that world, engaging in that story, and having the social aspect I missed due to the pandemic be there, it became my comfort game. Soon after beating base ARR I subbed to the game, unaware of the greatness to come. I enjoyed Heavensward and then is when I was turlly hooked and fell in love with the game. Then Stormblood, while not my favorite expansion, it still was pretty good with a lot of aspects I like and is when I really started appreciating the game as a game more. Then Shadowbringers happened. I had heard great things about it but I thought it would be good but a bit overhyped. Shadowbringers blew me out of the water and is my favorite expansion so far. I was content with how 5.3 ended, but of course we weren't at the end of the road yet. Endwalker, probably my second favorite expansion. The journey and story there is incredible as it pays off everything from A Realm Reborn to then. Endwalker 6.0 left me so satisfied that while I still stayed sub to the game and actively played, it took over a year for me to really get back into playing the story. I had briefly started 6.1 after beating Endwalker, but wasn't until this past week when I went through the patch storyline in preparation for Dawntrail. It was a solid storyline I enjoyed. And now, with maintenance ongoing, I await the coming of Dawntrail. I'm excited because it's my first expansion launch, but also a bit of anxiety is there. The game is changing and moving forward. With the graphics update, the game I love and cherish will look different but familiar. Though despite my fear I have every confidence in the devs to do it right. Oh and as for my character, playing XIV with them has been incredible. You know how people get really into their OCs, that is what happened with me. The XIV version of my D&D character has so much more lore and development to them compared to the original. So for those who are new and interested in trying XIV, I recommend you give it a try. The Free Trial includes Heavensward and Stormblood now, so you'll have 2 expansions to get through at your own pace before you even consider buying the game. Also, I recommend giving the game a try with friends. Whether it be starting completely new and blind, or meeting up with an experienced player to help guide you through the game. While XIV's story is great and definitely it's main appeal, I cannot downplay the experience and sentimental value you will have when you go through it with others with you by your side and awaiting you at every finish line, and taking in the game together.
I’m glad you gave the game another try! I’m like you in that Dawntrail will be my first expansion launch too. Thanks for sharing!
I came from ESO with over 8000 hours in that game. My daughter wanted me to try FFXIV out with her, so we played a bit of ARR then basically left the game for several months. It was okay, but it was so different from ESO that I had trouble loving the jobs, and the voice acting wasn't so great in ARR. But let's face it I was so bored with ESO and I just needed something different, so I hopped back on, and I am so glad I did. FFXIV was the best story I have ever played through MMO or RPG. The best part for me was actually going back through the second time and catching everything that I missed the first time because of the difference in perspective. Absolutely beautiful writing.
I’m glad you stuck with 14! It is a game that rewards the patient for sure.

THE ONE PIECE OF VIDEO GAMES SPECIALY MMOS
An apt comparison haha!
Look, I get that Destiny is a hard story to try and keep up on. So many years, long and drawn out due to being an MMO. But I’ve regime through the entire story and it’s pretty good, just tells the story in a unique way. If you only play through everything at launch and don’t go back through you can very easily forget it’s major beats, or fire bored with waiting. But it’d a good story about Humanity overcoming a great near god like power, of struggle and sacrifice, its length actually works in making it feel like a huge conflict, by the end you do feel weary of it, but once you get through Final Shape it feels truely worth it. To me at least.
I think the Final Shape did a great job of paying off the rest of the story! Thank you for watching
More like gaming's grandest disappointment. It went from being one of the greatest to being just... meh in the span of a single expansion, and the upcoming expac looks to be more of the same midness. All this being said, Shadowbringers was fantastic. Game was trucking right along until that final ShB patch.
What didn’t you like about Endwalker? Genuinely curious since most people seemed to really enjoy it, including myself!
@calvinfishermedia It lacked nuance, and a lot of what it told us wasn't lining up with what it *showed* us. I wasn't a fan of the lack of consequences, either. The hero made it through a story about the end of the world without losing a single person they cared about. Above all else, the tonal departure from what ShB was setting up was simply disappointing. We were gearing up for a darker story, with Venat and the Ascians being set up to have *all* been in the wrong. Instead, that last second rewrite they did to make the expansion more light-hearted included a bunch of light-washing that completely deviated from the original intent.
@@tek512 that is fair! I can see where you’re coming from.
The problem is people want to play sandbox rpgs. I'd even throw WoW into that mold. These games aren't bad, but they make some players of FF14 so fixated on a end goal that melds withe their character rather than just enjoying the game. I also found a correlation between people who like to read books/ practice music and their enjoyment of the story.
That’s fair! FF14 holds most of its progression behind the MSQ, so there isn’t a ton of flexibility compared to some other games.
@@calvinfishermedia yeah, it's like reading a book honestly. Me and my gf love reading. That, and I grew up with text based jrpgs so it doesn't feel too uncanny to me
@@sgtflamingo6532 for sure! I played the Pillars of Eternity games before FF14, and that was a good warm-up for the reading in this game haha
Okay, I respect your opinion, but have you played the "The Legend of Heroes: Trails[...]" series? Because it is legitimately the only equal if not better than XIV in terms of 'grandest' stories.
I haven’t, but I have gotten it recommended a lot on this video! I may have to check it out. Thanks for the suggestion!
@@calvinfishermedia As a fan I give you two suggestions for starting point: Generally, Sky (no addition) is the 'Universal' Starting point. If you can't stand the graphics, you can play Cold Steel 1/2 First, but I'd still suggest completing at least the Sky Trilogy before finishing Cold Steel. But no matter what, the Sky Trilogy, Zero/Azure, and Cold Steel 1-4 need to be finished before playing Reverie. Otherwise do not trust release dates, Sky (Trilogy), Zero/Azure, Cold Steel (Quadrilogy), Reverie, Daybreak is the (original) release order thus far.

genuinely an amazing video. I'm about 13 minutes through and just realized you only have 5k and the video is only shown as having 94 views. Way way underrated!!!
Thank you, I really appreciate it!
I've been a fan of the franchise for the longest time despite its MANY ups and downs. But what honestly surprised me most The Final Shape was the fact that it managed to sum up 10 years by just focusing on the vanguard. You would think they would try and have this be the biggest possible THING ever, but I love how it's a more personal feeling story since the sincerity is the best part of Bungie's storytelling in my opinion. Keep up the great work!
Well said! Final Shape has an intimacy that I wasn’t expecting from the culmination of the series. Thank you for watching!
Should have used the default Noble 6 because it better enhances his character
Fair enough! I get where you’re coming from. Thank you for watching!
14:21 It also symbolises that there’s no way out of the city and the last means of escape was destroyed
True, good point! Thank you for watching!
From what I’ve heard Destiny has a lot of INSANE lore that’s on par with the stuff you’d see in Elder Scrolls. Unfortunately, they’ve done an atrociously bad job of conveying it through the various expansions. Also, in addition to the various things you’ve mentioned in the video the first game was released in several dlc chunks that were clearly chopped up versions of the campaign (you could’ve mentioned that. It’s been a while since I watched the video, and I’m just now commenting). It’s such a shame the thing was so botched. We could’ve had something truly phenomenal. So are you any closer to finishing the Killzone trilogy, and starting on Resistance? Or are you mostly focused on other stuff? Something I found interesting about Resistance is how Fall of Man’s story is told like a documentary. It’s a cool concept, but sadly Nathan Hale is woefully underdeveloped. If there ever were to be a remake I’d want them to give him a voice like they did for Issac in the Dead Space remake. If he actually talked to the other characters during the game he would’ve been more developed. I also heard the ending of 2 was horrifically rushed, and Insomniac killed him off since they didn’t do a lot with his character. I’m sure he has more development in the book, but I haven’t read it so I can’t speak on it. It’s also interesting how they changed the weapon/health systems in each entry, and vehicles sadly only appeared in Fall of Man.
Destiny 1 definitely could have been handled better! I am getting a couple more videos out but hope to return to KZ soon!
That’s good news. What are some of the games you’re planning on covering before you resume Killzone? Also, will you do Resistance after covering Killzone, or do other videos before that?
@@shreksnow1918 I’m planning on covering Black Ops and Stalker as of now, maybe a follow up to my FF14 video too!
@calvinfishermedia Those will be interesting. It’s too bad that Black Ops 4’s story mode was cancelled. It definitely sounded interesting. So are you more interested in covering those games than Killzone/Resistance? It definitely is really disappointing that you’re not getting to them sooner, but at the same time I understand wanting to cover other stuff first.
@@shreksnow1918 one of the main reasons I’m planning on covering the other games first is because they are a bit more time contingent. Both Stalker and Black Ops have sequels coming out this year, so I hope to have their series done before the new games come out. If I have time, I may try to squeeze in the KZ2 video though!
I’ve always like the aesthetic of Destiny but never played. This story sounds good though! Thanks for the video!

Thanks for watching everyone! Did you enjoy the Final Shape?
Your point about Zenos.. If you haven't, you should read Zenos's short stories. You're almost right on. After reading that short story, Zenos clicked for me, and it really made me appreciate the character rather then what was presented in the game. It just wasn't brought across on me as it was intended.
Thanks! I didn’t know there were Zenos short stories, I will look into them.
Anyone else main hunter before it became popular?
Hunters for life!
I liked it a lot but it really has become epsisodic anime one piece kinda thing now with all the anime tropes. Back in Heavensward it felt like a grand video game with a movie level plot but now it feels like watching a tv series where you know whatever happens they’re all going to be alive and friends at the end and eat tacos in trailers etc. Which is fine but it doesn’t feel like final fantasy anymore.
That is a fair criticism for sure! It will be interesting to see if the new expansion shakes things up.
Should do the back ops trilogy and the new mw trilogy
I’m making a video on Black Ops 1 now actually! :)

One thing I never understood was how does the fog affect the self for symbiosis. Was it gonna knock everyone out and the symbiotes from the generators would take the unconscious body as a host? Did it alter the body to prepare for symbiosis? Like what was the fog doing.
Definitely a fair point! I don’t think there is ever a clear answer. I think it’s mainly a justification for the game’s low draw distance haha
@@calvinfishermedia yeah i love that they used it to address limitations. And as you said in the vid it really gives the game a visual flair i mean everyone who played this game remembers the fog. I just wondered after so many years what it did to assist in the process. I also loved your point about action figures because as I play this game as an adult this game feels exactly like the kind of made up spiderman story i’d make while playing with my old action figures as a kid.
@@justinsinger2505 For sure! The fog and the action figures vibe add a big nostalgia factor to the game for me
IMO the really long cutscene at the end of ARR sets the stage for the next 3 xpacs. 1. It leads directly into Heavensward 2. It indirectly leads to Stormblood which in turn. . . 3. Leads into Shadowbringers
The cutscene just before Heavensward is one of the best in the game!
I love the detail in MW2 of one of the russian soldiers raiding a fridge in the house with the crashed plane. Very realistic in context of the Ukraine war lmao Edit: also the riot shield shower room from the gulag was re-used in MW2019 as the gulag fight room in Warzone
Good point about the gulag being re-used! It was one of the reasons WZ had a nostalgic feeling for me haha
This is the popular claim of people who doesnt consume much quality media. If you think ff14 story is grand, you probably need to get out there and experience better stories.
You’re entitled to your opinion! Fwiw, I’m a pretty avid fantasy reader and have played a lot of RPG’s. Thanks for watching.
Bro u r ass💀
I never really took to Fandaniel, even after learning his backstory. He always felt like a discount Kefka to me. And then, while I was thinking about why, I realized it's because Zenos and Fandaniel are both half of Kefka, who is an apathetic nihilist who wants to tear down the world because he not only doesn't understand why people care, he hates that nobody seems to care about _him_ and all the pain the magitek experiments put him through.
That’s totally fair! Yes I would definitely say he still isn’t my favorite, but I think he works well as Endwalker’s villain for the themes they were going for. Thanks for watching
Love FF14 one of my favorite video game stories of all time. And I will say it....there is SO MUCH FILLER lol. I think at this point they could do a FF14 KAI like DBZ lol Excited for the expansion.
Yes, definitely a lot of filler! I think a good amount of the fetch quests in the MSQ could be cut without the game losing much.
No Russian doesn't make me feel bad, it's just a boring mission once you played it once. Hence why I skip it.
Definitely fair! No Russian doesn’t offer much gameplay wise
I just wish the gameplay was better. Graphics are fine and the community is awesome but it plays like a traditional boring tab target RPG. ESO has the opposite problem. Plays like a dream but the community are old snobby lore nerds plus looks super ugly.
Definitely fair! Gameplay during ARR can be a slog because you have such few options. I’ve really come to love the combat later in the game though!
What is the OST at the beginning, the calm version of Torn from the heavens
I think the first song I used was More Than Truth from the Shadowbringers OST
I am going to offer a bit of a defense to the Cortona/Gravemind interrupts. 1st they never actually interrupt action, they always occur between action and taking breaks from action is something every halo has done, sometimes you need to wait for the pelican, sometimes the next wave, sometimes you take a walk in the woods. Here I always felt like it was a nice way to show Chief breaking down and we had to wait not for some external even to happen but for Chief to quiet an internal event. He feels guilty over leaving Cortana behind, and with some echo of Cortana remaining in his head it was a way to show the connection these two had. Chief being the stoic type pushes through these interrupts and keeps going, but the cracks are beginning to show. Later with the Gravemind in High Charity I got the sense that the flood is just as big on psychological attacks as well as physical. If he cannot break Chief's body he will at least attempt to break Chief's spirit by manipulating whatever he can, usually taunting him with Cortana, sometimes taunting him over firing the Halo array. If the Gravemind can affect someone like Chief with Psychological attacks it makes him far more terrifying.
That interpretation makes a lot of sense! I can see how it enhances Chief’s character by highlighting the psychological impact. Thanks for sharing
As a reader of SF/F for over 50 years, I really appreciate what they did wiith the FF14 story. Early on they didn't really KNOW what the Ascians were, so they cleverly left holes that enabled them to retrofit the end onto the beginning. I love long series and a story well told is wonderful. I'll also check out your books if they're on Kindle. Edit: Amazon, what the hell? Usually with a series they show all the books in the series. FOr some reason I had to search for each one individually. Anyway 1-3 got :) IS that all of them currently?
Thank you for checking out my books, it really means a lot! Yes there are three out so far, I am working on the fourth and final book right now :)!
@@calvinfishermedia Nice! I'm in the middle the massive Malazan series, right now but they're there on my Kindle now.
this has to be one of the best retrospective videos I’ve watched in a while. I spent so much time playing these campaigns and loving the craftsmanship and art of these games. Though I never fully appreciated those things since I was only a kid, as an adult having someone take the time to play through, break down, and allow me to recollect everything is truly special. This video is absolutely amazing. Rock on.
Thank you for the kind feedback, it truly means a lot!
The main story is amazing, but there's also a seaming countless number of side stories, dozens of which are pretty much stand alone game stories in and of themselves, and plenty are better than most games! Ishikawa is a genius! Honorable mention to the music with Soken at the helm, easily the most emotional body of music in any game I've played in my decades of gaming!
The music is incredible!! Honestly so many amazing tracks, that fit the mood of the game so perfectly.
I hope you bring up Encyclopedia Eorzea, if not when you eventually do a Dawntrail video you should bring them up, they are such amazing books. There was a guy Ethys Asher who did entire fireside chat videos detailing lore and really getting into the Encyclopedia, so amazing they are still the benchmark for lore videos for me. Glad you love our world and thanks for the recap video!
I haven’t heard of them before, but I’ll have to look into them! Thank you for sharing!
