    She didn’t write “Light of my life, Fire of my loins” it is a direct quote from the first line of the book Lolita by Nabakov. He is one of her favourite writes and she has his name tattooed on her (next to Whitman who is one of her other favourites)
    Born to Die is currently 71 on the Billboard 200 and is on its 483rd week on the charts. Only 18 albums have charted for longer.

    I’m glad you picked up on the pervasive themes of death through her work - I feel it’s part of what makes Ocean Blvd almost feel like closing the loop. Lana has talked about a watershed moment for her in childhood was when she first learned that she, and everyone around her, would one day die. Honestly, the obsessive way she describes her childhood thoughts make me wonder if it wasn’t an early sign of an emotional disorder that went undiagnosed due to her growing up in an abusive household. a lot of these songs lean heavily on autobiography- Lana lived a rough life before she wrote this album. A suicide attempt, becoming a black out alcoholic and going through rehab all before graduating high school, she went on to major in metaphysics, and instead of going back home to live in her privileged childhood home, she chose to live in a trailer park with a guy who would eventually be sent to prison and die (meaning two of the men she loved when she was younger died). She was also living a really kinda scary life - she said she’d walk around at night and meet people and just “go with them”, whatever that means?? She said there were a few years where she didn’t have an ID or a social security card, she was just lost and wondering and even got involved with a weird sobriety cult with an abusive leader. This album is so weird and lovely and dark, it could really only have been made by her.

      It's all very interesting, especially from a man's point of view so a somewhat 'outsider' lens perspective. Most interesting/thought-provoking for me is how there's a sort of "glamorisation" of these genuinely toxic, dark and dangerous elements of the lifestyle/world that Lana not manifests through her music, but has actually lived through in real life. Especially amongst younger women, there certainly appears a sense of fascination and allure to the "sad beauty" identity of being a Lana type figure and living such a lifestyle...bad boys, booze, drugs, living in the moment, rollercoaster of emotions, and so on. But of course, there's an undeniable level of risk attached to all that, and quite frankly Lana and the young women who engage in behaviour/lifestyle like that are playing with fire and rolling the dice as to whether they'll end up dead in some ditch somewhere, or in the back of a van. But I suspect to such people drawn to that identity and lifestyle...that level of risk is part of the allure to begin with.
      The thing with Lana, is that she is mostly self-aware about this, and admits that in her music. She knows what she was doing / the men she slept with her toxic, but she enjoyed the toxicity. My concern is that there are probably alot of young women who want to emulate this identity/lifestyle without such self-awareness and street smarts that Lana had, and will not be so resilient to the effects of it.
      My thoughts on the album and identity of it - regardless, Lana is the best female lyricist alive IMO. Ridiculous how so many straight men refrain from listening to her on the basis that her fandom/music is for 'gays' and for 'women'.

    This album was Lana’s noir period. Very cinematic, melancholy, and exaggerated, however, there’s a lot of truth sprinkled in. LDR has lived a crazy life, and at the start of her career, she felt she had to present her truth behind a persona in order to be accepted. You can see as she evolves that this persona is stripped away until you’re left with just Lana/Lizzy as she truly is.

    I am 65,adore LDR and when this came out I think I was up at midnight to download it the day it hit.it remained my favorite Lana album until ocean Blvd.Elizabeth Grant is #1 now because she does not lower her standards or beliefs to suit the ""insiders" at record companies or some disgruntled fans,she wants to be free like she sings about in "Get free". she wants to be a wife,mother,sister,daughter,friend and she shows us herself and ourselves on every album,she implores us to look beyond sexual control and manipulation,to find what lies beyond because she wondered in 2013 "will you still love me,when I'm no longer young and beautiful" she is a modern master who brings a lot of soul to the table..Love your reactions..Kent in Ohio.

In NA she is with her love, living fast and stuff, it sounds like life, and dark paradise she is without him,...this is so sad and she is a genius, Lana really does nothing by chance, everything makes so much sense...

    With the new album and other songs on her previous album "Blue Banisters" she goes so in depth about her childhood and her past that really make me have a new appreciation for her early songs like "Carmen" or "This is What Makes Us Girls" since it gives those songs even more context of what Lana was actually going through.
    Also summertime sadness is a song about a dear friend of Lana who sadly commited suicide during summer, a lot of people think it's about a guy/relationship.

      @wonderland4515 Před rokem +1

      I wouldn't say they're a 100% biographical, every song of hers is insipired from real life and things she went through but she's very glamorous and exaggerated in her lyrics and she's very good with words, she goes the extra step to really get the point across and to really give that shock value. I'd say her lyrics are 90%-95% biographical.

    Born To Die is Lana’s most popular album more than twice as popular than her second most popular album. I believe DUKTATUOB is her BEST album but only time will tell if it becomes her most popular.

    I made the connection between Aaron Greene dying and this song as well. In Dark Paradise she sings, "I'm lying in the ocean, singing your song" and Fingertips, "Pulled me up by my waist, long hair to the beach-side. I wanted to go out like you". A potential suicide attempt over losing her one true love?

    This is random, but I'm thinking the intro to National Anthem was reminding you of Bitter Sweet Symphony. Because I just now realized that myself lol
