    Born to Die was a monumental album. it is still on the billboards! it has greatly influenced all the female pop artists who came after. Taylor, billie, Halsey and others have openly stated how pivotal this album was. It changed the trajectory of pop music. it is rated by RS, pitchfork and other publications as the best album of that decade

    I’m 64 and just started listening to her recently. She’s been my 23 year old daughter’s favorite music artist since she was 12 and I finally decided to give her a listen after she saw her at lollapalooza this summer. I’m obsessed! I have no idea how I missed all this. So much more than I ever imagined. Love this album (paradise edition even better), love Norman F-ing Rockwell, Ultraviolence, Honeymoon and even songs from newer albums. Enjoyed your reaction and hope you do more!

    i've been a fan since 2011! she was actually an indie artist for around a decade before this album under her real name "lizzy grant" and played in bars around NYC and would make these homemade music videos she would edit herself, and she even released an album under that name but she was never really popular, i think her music was ahead of it's time tbh. she was blending genres and singing about toxic codependent relationships and stuff at a time when it wasn't popular and most female artists were singing about girl power and not needing a man, so there was a bad reaction to her music with critics calling it strange and anti-feminist, etc. this album was panned by critics, but it was super influential and she helped pave the way for other female artists (like billie, who says lana is one of her biggest inspirations) and a lot of those critics have admitted they were wrong about her. interesting fact is that the weeknd actually helped boost her popularity because he saw one of her homemade videos and liked it so much he helped promo it.

Lana is a huge fan and is very supportive of newer artists like Billie Eilish, Madison beer etc. it’s great to see such a positive relationship between old and new school artist in the same genre unlike feuds we have seen in the past like Madonna and Gaga or current feuds like Nicki and most of the rap girlies.

    she was sooooo criticized for this album back in the day its unreal lol it was different from everything. so she had to keep proving that she was authentic and talented album after album. the funny thing is that the next album, "ultraviolence", is basically her saying "fuck yall!" and taking everything they criticized and multiplying it for 1000x. it was even more polemic and sadder but also ironic and satirical, in response to the critics.

    I would love for u to explore her discography!! This album is one of not the most important pop album of the 2010’s.
    It was way ahead of it’s time, and though it (and she) was attacked relentlessly by the industry, it was a hit with the public who saw it for what it was, an album with drama, glamour, and ofc sarcastic winking humor sprinkled in!
    This completely went against the mainstream idea of “poptimism” and set the trend towards more moody pop. And of she influenced so many artists like taylor swift, billie, Lorde, troye sivan, halsey, etc etc
    This album has aged like fine wine to me tho it def is not her best album, which says a lot about her talent

    • @jspettifer
      @jspettifer Před 5 měsíci +10

      She got so many attacks for being inauthentic and many of the critics reviews were scathing of the album.
      Many publications have revisited the album admitting that they were wrong and that it was ahead of its time.
      She has among her fans Taylor Swift (who is one of her biggest promoters and has called her the most influential artist in pop), Billie Eilish (who said that Lana “birthed her”), Adele (who is a fan girl and obsessed with her), Bruce Springsteen (“Lana Del Rey is simply one of Americas greatest songwriters”), The Weeknd (“She is the girl in my music”)

"sad" songs, songs about being depressive and wanting to die, always existed. but lana made it become mainstream. there's music before and after lana, for sure. she received the "artist of the decade award" in Variety for a reason. you can see her influence in every corner of music industry. billie, olivia, halsey, even taylors folklore and evermore. queen of alt.

    btw, each album of hers is a part of a journey. You can see her from being a sort of character (Born To Die) to express her pain in the most lyrical way (Ultraviolence), Honeymoon is like a low-key psychedelic trip to the desert, in Lust for Life she is happier and unapologetic, and NFR! reflects on her life in a very bittersweet way. In Chemtrails Over The Country Club there's a sense of rebirth, it's folk, country, and a bit religious. Blue Banisters is A FUCKING MASTERPIECE and she said that it's not an album she put out for her fans, but it's like a diary we could read if we want to know something more about her. Finally, Did You Know That There's A Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd is mostly about family, death, grief and hope and is really psychanalitic. And, apart from those 8 albums there's another two albums prior her official born to die debut and hundreds of other unreleased songs you can find online.

    Lana is probably my favorite artist ever, I discovered her when I was 15 and she’s been my favorite since (I’m 23). You’ve got to listen to born to die the paradise edition with her special edition tracks, so + paradise ep + burning desire + BTD special tracks like without you, lucky ones, etc. it’s a great breakout album and although many people prefer BTD, you can see her evolving musically and personally while also experimenting with different styles and it’s spectacular. I go through varying “phases” where I prefer one album over her others. In the fandom, BTD, ultraviolence, and Norman are the favorites, but my personal favorite since the 2020s have been blue banisters, ultraviolence and now ocean. BTD is actually not her first album… but her first album “Lizzie Grant aka LDR” is very hard to find physically and on streaming services, except for CZcams. Although I’d love for her to go back to her UV and Norman style of music, her progression and evolution as an artist is spectacular, inspirational, and I truly admire how she is being true to herself through her music. She has barely been “trending” and going mainstream again since her BTD era, but she WILL be the artist that may be one of the most remembered from this generation… she has been inspired by many classic rock, hip hop, and blues artists and she has influenced or inspired countless female artists including Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Melanie Martinez, Olivia Rodrigo, likely Marina, Madison Beer, Lorde, Halsey and basically the entire new generation of pop stars… she practically also created a subgenre called whisper pop. She’s a legend

    'Diet mountain dew' is a reflection of how this boy is artificially sweet to her and 'no good for her' despite seeming like the better alternative. Lana has a lot of misleading soda songs, like Cola and A&W

    I understand that you don't know Lana Del Rey well, but don't compare her to Billie. Lana Del Rey is a game changer, a Goddess. Billie inspired by Lana Del Rey, that's why her music is a little bit similar to LDR, a little bit, because she can't compare to one and only.
