🚫DO NOT CELEBRATE THE DAY OF YOUR BIRTH🚫
📖A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth. It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart. Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better. The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth. It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools. For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity. Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart.📖(ECCLESIASTES 7:1-7)

It's so sad though to see Mandela's achievements get wiped away by incompetent leaders in South Africa. There's no more talk of rapprochement and reconciliation, but revenge and suppression. The constitution has just been amended to allow for the confiscation of white-owned land. To quote the ANC minister for rural affairs: "The ANC unequivocally supports the principle of land expropriation without compensation." And parliamentarians are openly proclaiming that "the time for reconciliation is over". Mandela must be turning in his grave...

K'Nai Massini What you need to do is to continue to meditate on Mandela's lessons. He spent DECADES in a hopeless fight against one of the world's most repressive governments, and he did it because of his belief in the goodness of the human spirit, and his belief that righteousness wins in the end. Because of people like him, the world is a much better place now than it has ever been in human history. Slavery is gone. Smallpox is gone. The global rate of extreme poverty is at an all-time low. The world IS getting better, and it is getting better because of people like Mandela, but also people like us.
If he could put up with 27 years in jail, I think we can put up with 2-4 years of idiocracy. 8 might be stretch, though.

I can't help but wonder who those 32 downvotes are, and my tendency is to focus on that -- but then I think about Mandela's wise words (and, more importantly, actions)... and I remind myself how it's so much more powerful to focus on the good.
