It's so sad though to see Mandela's achievements get wiped away by incompetent leaders in South Africa. There's no more talk of rapprochement and reconciliation, but revenge and suppression. The constitution has just been amended to allow for the confiscation of white-owned land. To quote the ANC minister for rural affairs: "The ANC unequivocally supports the principle of land expropriation without compensation." And parliamentarians are openly proclaiming that "the time for reconciliation is over". Mandela must be turning in his grave...

My mom was in the Peace Corp in Lesotho during the 1980's. The things she saw and friends she lost during the apartheid still haunt her. I grew up listening to her stories about Nelson Mandela and now he is my biggest role model. When he was released from prison my mother cried and told me that she never thought she'd see that day. Always forgive and never let the world harden your kindness, for violence and revenge are only ever temporary solutions ♡
If only the US President could have a hundredth of the courage Mandela had.

He spent DECADES in a hopeless fight against one of the world's most repressive governments, and he did it because of his belief in the goodness of the human spirit, and his belief that righteousness wins in the end. Because of people like him, the world is a much better place now than it has ever been in human history. Slavery is gone. Smallpox is gone. The global rate of extreme poverty is at an all-time low. The world IS getting better, and it is getting better because of people like Mandela, but also people like us.
If he could put up with 27 years in jail, I think we can put up with 2-4 years of idiocracy. 8 might be stretch, though.
