Great video Mike! Really love the central cliff face, the snow effect on the ledges is just awesome! Thanks for talking through your work on this project, as snow is one of the trickiest things to get right on terrain I think many people will really benefit from your advice! All the best my friend.

Thanks, I just love to see how you improve and experiment with every project. You are truly a master modeler.

Love the looks and the experimentation on the project here. It's all about the creative vein in you.

@Terranscapes I've used white semi-translucent candle wax before and it works quite nicely. If you pour it in sheets, break it up.. When you place the pieces in the still-tacky water effects the translucency becomes more pronounced. Wax is also easier to break/shape.

Was waiting for this! wow love it. The entire piece looks amazing, i bet your client loves it!

You could pre-seal the wood before gluing it down to cut back on the bleed of the leaching. You never cease to impress.

Cool! thanks for the heads up! Nanuet is not far from here. I'll check it out!

Another thought. The slippage issue when you glue the foam together. Perhaps drive some toothpicks, or pieces of toothpicks on small items, into the foam to hold them in place like re-bar in concrete. Not through the top, but on the faces being glued together, essentially pinning them in place. might help.

A surfactant is an additive that helps 2 materials that dont usually get along, get along. like Oil and Water. normally, they dont mix, but a little surfactant and poof, they'll blend right up into solution or emulsification. On a chemical level, it tinkers with surface energy of the material so they will bond more freely. I'm not sure what he uses it for, jet dry and pva glue are both water based and should get along already. Probably as a wetting agent to improve flow.

Might consider baking the wood sticks in the oven on low for about 10-15 minutes. Should dry out all of the moisture and bring most of the oils to the surface. I havent tried this, but it might be worth a shot if you are really concerned about the oils leeching onto the terrain.

Hey how much did you charge to make this display board?

very nice work, a true inspiration to make some snow covered scenery for my wh40k space wolves :)
bout the icicles: i was wondering and thinking of trying to build them with clear silicone sealant (as a base) or hot glue and finish them of with water effects to make them look realistic and blend in. not sure if it'll work, but worth a try.
thx for all the tips ;)

I'm glad my superiors also find snow effects a challenge too ;) I agree there are so many ways to go about it! I quite like the effect you've created, though if I could make one minor criticism it is that it looks very 'dispersed'/powdery in the areas between the thick snow build up - the effect would be much stronger if the 'earth' areas were a little more pronounced.
I think the leeching is not a big deal, as you say snow is not always perfect white. The icicles look great!!

Absolute beautiful! You are a true master! Thanks for sharing. Couple of questions, if you have time to answer what exactly is surfactant (hope I spelled it right) what does it do for your sealant and what is mix ratio of "diluted PVA glue, Surfactant and Jet Dry". As always thank you for all your hard work. And good luck in NY.

@CustomTerrain As for ice build-up along the edges of the river, that would be trickier. I haven't tried it but have toyed with a few possibilities. One possible idea would be to pour water effect and allow to set, then put tape/string along the centre of the river - pour wax over the lot then rip up the tape to leave the centre of the river ice-free, but the wax on the edges remaining. Not sure if it will work, I'll try it one day :P

how would you go about making a snowy board... and your usual river effects... but with patches of ice in it... as in some semi fast moving water, you will find ice building around the edges and the bushes on the sides, but in the centre its still flowing... could you perhaps show how you would achieve something like that? Could use rock candy to form your own ice sickles.

    very nice work...
why can't I find any videos on how you carve your various styles of rocks?

    • @Terranscapes
      @Terranscapes  Před 7 lety +3

Well, there are some mixed in here and there. And I've referenced some other videos from time to time. In one of the Q&A's I describe how I do the carving for the rocks on the martian boards and one of the waterfalls. Sorry the info is scattered hither and thither. I've never shot an in process video, I think. I can't remember all of my videos anymore. :)

Woah, that is amazing! I feel like you have this posted somewhere, but I am a bit lazy. How long have you been making terrain, and how much money do you spend per board? Like, just say you has to buy everything from scratch, how much do you think? Again, great job!
