Today I look at the legendary Audi R8. Now about to be discontinued, the R8 may be the oldest supercar on sale, but it has a lot that the others could learn from.

My drinking game is taking a shot when James mentions his long torso
I think that the length of James’s torso should feature in the latest trivial pursuit edition. In fact many games in the local pubs make sure that they include the length of his torso. We must ask James to measure his torso-perhaps it can be used as an essential question in a stand off.
@@edthomas8486 "which automotive journalist has the greatest torso to leg ratio?"
Toxteth O'Grady, USA
🤣
Add the word “Ferrari” or phrases like “well judged” or “heal n toe” and you would be going to hospital.
Amazing engine, but one thing i hated about my R8 gen2 was the dynamic steering ratio. I had to swerve out of the way of a car pulling out of a junction and the ratio was not the same as i expected and didn't turn enough. I didn't crash, but a bit of poo came out.
One of the few Audi engines that doesn't return an entire Google page when I search 'problems'. Makes a nice change 👍
Luckily the new Audi engines are fairly reliable I haven't heard anything too bad about the new 1.5 TFSI or the 1.4 TFSI E or the revised 2.0 TFSI/TDIs only the older engines
@@Afraz_9n3 That's possibly only because they are too new to have started falling apart. Wouldn't trust Audi as far as I could throw them after the last 20 years churning out mostly shit.
@@Beer_Dad1975 lol very good argument to back up your opinion. Audi did screw on some engines but most of them are good enough to be considered reliable.
@@ederss7 Well as pointed out by the OP, google most Audi engines and you'll get pages of common and inexcusable failure points - so really didn't have to post any kind of argument. Also look at how bad they have been ranked on the annual JD Power surveys for the last 20 years. They are always one of the bottom feeders.
Haven’t yet watched the video but I’d say they are 10 reasons why it’s a lovely car .
V10 reasons !
An engine to die for .
The pre opf cars are great value and sound glorious
2016-2018 is peak R8 for me
Agreed, the post 2018 models sound awful
@@alexbooth1982 If you can afford an R8 you can afford a £5k exhaust system
@@MaackyD you need to rip out the OPF filters and change the exhaust. Not sure what car you drive, but if you’re spending £5k on an exhaust system for a supercar, you’re buying the wrong one. You should be spending £12-15k and buy a proper one.
@alexbooth1982 There's plenty under 8k, my mates dad has an RS7 and R8 V10+ and that's got an exhaust which was about 5k including labour. Plenty on the market for cheaper than that as well.
@@MaackyD according to ricky at re performance
Who knows more about audi r8s than anyone evan he says the best r8 is 16-18
Hes mentioned before but evan with a aftermarket exhaust on a opf car there still not as loud, pops etc… software etc…
My Gen 1 V10 manual is a keeper. Not as flash as a Lambo, but that suits me fine. Sounds fab with a decent exhaust and drives brilliantly. For a pure driving experience you can't beat the manual.
I agree! just bought 2011 spyder v10 manual. Only thing it needs is an exhaust. Went with topgear f1 valved loving it everyday!
Jealous lads! Everyone looking at 50/60k sports cars I always recommend the r8 v10 manual if one can be found for that much now in good nick
same. I've had a 2011 V10 manual spyder for 18 months now, fantastic. Though they're super rare and expensive here in USA
Very nice motors. That’s what’s I’m going for now! Or I might go facelift V8 🤔 but I know I’ll always be thinking I wish I had the v10…
You just can’t go past the Gen 1 v10 Manual in my opinion. The difference between the old Gen 2 and many other cars is there but it’s small. But add a manual box and it’s a total different proposition
Great video James, I’m the fortunate owner of a gen1 v10+ and it never fails to put a gigantic smile on my face. It has the full leather pack with diamond stitch which lifts the interior and leather quality quite significantly imho. Look forward to hearing you r8 story 👍
Che
I drove the V10 of this era and found it numb. It just felt almost too well engineered, too clinical, too germanic. I also drove the Huracan and despite being effectively the same car, they are chalk and cheese. They feel completely different. The R8 is if you want a daily supercar that you can feel safe in pushing it. The Huracan is a psychopath that scares you if you push it. I want the latter if I'm buying a supercar.
I suspect your right! I had a Golf GTD many years ago and thought it was fab, right up until I just got thoroughly bored with it, it was too clinical and I’ve found anything from the VW group the same since, I’ve only driven one lambo but that was track (and LP700) it too was a bit cold but I suspect on the road it would be scary…big car too, not in any way nimble
The R8 is, dare I say, BORING. Love the engine note, but it just doesn't give you the fizz.
A bit late to this video but I agree but, it’s been more positive for me. I’ve come from a high powered RWD Mercedes, more powerful than the R8 and the wanting to kill you thing wears thin after some time. Sure, dry day, infinite road its the huge buzz but daily it becomes a pain in butt to the point you question why you bother in the UK when last year was one of the wettest summers on record and that’s likely to be a theme again at some point. So, for the perfect days, a widow maker is what you want, but for 80% of all other occasions I have found the R8 to be perfect.
R8 looks stunning in yellow.
Bought my R8 V10+ 18 months ago as a box ticking exercise. I was planning to keep it for max a year. Not done with it anytime soon.. 👌🏻
I had the V10 Performance… first you have to get rid of the OPF because they make the sound so bad… and you ned a valve control because its nearly everytime closed from factory😂 i‘ve upgraded a few months ago to a huracan evo and have to say its a whole other world…. But the R8 costs the half so its a good car as well! Sorry for my bad english lol
Long live the V10!
Thanks for the video and stay safe ✌️.
Probably the most reliable car Audi makes. Mclaren and Ferrari are stupidly expensive for such poor quality and reliability. They’re definitely for rich guys that have more money than care, like look at me I can afford to drive a car that self destructs a little every time I drive it. The R8 Plus has been my daily since 2017 and has never been in the shop for anything other than tune-ups and me adding Audi Performance parts. It gets driven year round, summer and winter, and does awesome in snow. And the noise! I still love it.
Amazing video and absolutely love the spec on that car you drove
I got a poor man’s r8 v8 15 plate spyder, most people think it’s a 100grand plus car , my car interior is a bit dated but the exterior still looks amazing ,
Great review, cheers
Proper video..thanks James
Another well articulated, comprehensive review that as well as being informative was very enjoyable to watch and listen to. Thanks Jay Em!
"Depleted uranium " 🤣👏
Cheers for the video.
It is a joy to watch your reviews. You are a professional. Thank you James.
That’s a great upload Jay. Love the R8. The spec or engine is irrelevant to me. Incredible cars. Keep up the great work.
I totally agree with your assessment of Audi leather. I found my VW Golf GTI leather seats to be far superior to the pleather in my wife’s A4. How is VW interior so much better than it’s premium big brother brand? That said I also agree the R8 is awesome and daily drive-able.
The original still looked way better and had a actual transmission.
Nice colour
You only need one reason to buy this car and that is the motor…..
This is a very common attitude sadly. People who are in their teens(or are stuck mentally being in their teens) mock supercars and sportscars like this either because you can have "1000hp" with TTRS, RS3, RS6 or any other turbo car. Or because something like Veyron/Chiron or Tesla plaid exist when it comes to acceleration specs. Either way they are specs focused folk who never driver and true sportscar and dont get what matters in experience of driving one.
Imagine pulling up too the dogging spot in this
What 😂😂😂
wtf is a dogging spot?
I'm Glad you've finally saw the light James
beautiful colour on that r8. too many audi's are grey, black and silver.
Understated, classy and doesn't scream look at me.
Less police attention and blends in traffic and car park so less attention in general.
I believe people compare it too much with the Huracan. With the EVO things got a bit crazy and maybe the difference is too much to make any comparisons between them even tho they share the same engine.
You have forgotten the Corvette Z06. New car, huge power NA V8 for R8 money (if you can get an allocation).
Great video as usual. Chevy of course is doing the N/A V8 for the Vette with 670 bhp...
Yet they can't keep the R8 alive
well said jay
It’s funny how understeer is one of the most common complaints about cars and it’s one of the fastest things to be fixed with a driver mod. 😂
saw one in the same not massively imo flattering yelow taxi colour the other day but it did sound fab
Point of order. Don’t know if it is available in Britain, BUT the C8 Z06 Corvette, by the account of all who have driven it, qualifies as a super car, and the engine (5.5 liter, NA flat plane crank V8 with 8700 rpm redline making 670 HP) meets all the same criteria as that V10.
It is available here but quite difficult to get - long delay times.
But only in a straight line...
@@GryphLaneyeah no that's just not true
Depending on the track, it’s nip and tuck as to whether the Z06 or GT3 is quicker, and the Z06 is in spitting distance of a GT3 RS. Those aren’t opinions. They are facts that have been demonstrated in the real world.
@@GryphLane Fastest car on Motortrend Figure-8 after the 765LT, fastest car on Monticello after the AMG GT Black Series. Clueless
15:14 194cm here, I tried a R8 Spider and the top of the windscreen line blocked half my view of the road. If I had taken it on the motorway, I would have needed to fit a toupee afterwards with all the buffeting.
I love the R8, but I'm 6'2" and much prefer my modified V8 Lexus SC430 that has a back seat, trunk space, low BC Racing coilovers, big, fat tires and a muffler delete...People stop, stare and take pictures...
I'm 6'4" and fit just fine. Both in the old and the new R8.
Thank you.
Lots of these here in Au. Sadly they're just poser flex as there is nowhere to use them at all outside of a racetrack.
Been looking at a 2011 Spyder recently, think it is time to bring her home, many thx
One of the most well-rounded cars of all time. Ticks literally every box; but then again, maybe this is also its downside.
Love the Audi R 8 !!!!
Saying the R8 is an overweight TT is like saying a Lamborghini Gallardo/Hurecan is just an overweight Volkswagen Golf.
I know, and yet people do
TTS is half an R8
I always thought it was cool that a TTRS was a mini R8
People love manuals but buy autos/dual clutch
practicallity and comfort...
You also have to be a good driver inorder to drive a manual properly.
You're rev match, downshifts and heel toe have to be perfect, which is especially important on a mid engined car.
Watched this right after Harry's new RS4 retro review; Harry comments on how the RS4 debuted Audi's V8, and how we didn't know at the time that the R8 was just round the corner. V8 for me, as I'm a cross plane obsessive...
Great review and great car. What an engine that is
But James a manual is no good when driving around the west end...
My favorite car is gone. When I first saw this car in 06. I gasped. Love the first edition the best. 😭😭The huracan twin edition is cool too. Electric cars on the way. Had this car poster in glass. God I'm sad. Love this car as much as Doug Demuro loves his Porsche.😢😢 I'd kill for one almost.👍😎❤💙❤💙😍😘
i like Audi, so cool
The first 40 seconds sold me . . .
We want to buy a v10 hopefully in near future our v8 is just fine especially when hitting the gas ⛽️ in a tunnel 😮 we also have a mk2 vr6 tt and there not the same thing 😊
More grown up than the first generation - but I don’t want one as much…
my dream car. just slap on twin turbo ams or ugr and it will become hypercar killer
It's a nice car, and I enjoyed the video but supercars are always going to be outside my budget. I liked the cameo appearance of the Proton though, I can afford one of those. That model didn't have a model name, it was just called the Proton.
You have LOTS of sporting choices. Color not important, how it drives does. My 99 base manual 911 cab is plenty fun and it doesn’t matter a Hyundai manual 4 cyl turbo can beat me on a short track. Miata, Boxster, GTI, etc. Many choices,
I prefer the old Jayemm
Can you do a cayman vs r8 video
I drove a Huracan 610-4 on the track: felt like a hero but laptime not so impressive (15 secs slower than lap record). Drove Audi R8 V10 plus; felt like Mr. Bean yet I was within 5 secs of lap record. The Audi is like an older guy GT car yet it's quicker than the Huracan.
Corvette is naturally aspirated and a lot cheaper. I love the R8 and the way it sounds! The US version is the only one I have heard!
It is odd that some all aluminum cars weigh so much. I just bought a Jaguar F-Type 3.0 manual coupe, it weighs 3,500 pounds. It does have huge steel brake rotors though and a monster AGM battery in the trunk.
But it's still an awesome car though, and that exhaust!
@@odinikita4821 Indeed! From a purr to a howl, glorious sounds! I'm an old man, this is a pinnacle car for me, though Caterham 7s do beckon, one with a small engine. Opposite ends of the spectrum.
This, or the older RWD, V10, MT?
"well this... Is the last one."
I nearly wept.... Seriously though, I got a lump in my throat when you said that.
It's really sad.
Every videos you've done on the R8 I've said the same thing, but these WILL appreciate, even though I think we may have apexed on the used car market (I'm probably VERY wrong on this).
It's such a massive shame and whenever anyone says it I really do get a pit in my stomach over it, but this is the end of "proper" cars. Really it is.
Caveat - used!!
I mean used. At 150k maybe not... And 167k?
No.
It's probably a last hurrah.
Again... Such a shame. Such a massive, *massive* shame.
2nd caveat - in the USA no so much! For obvious reasons, but some less obvious. One being how small they are.
We're a bit shorter in Europe, barring the scandanavians.
They really ruined the design of the R8 with this gen.
Add to that OPFs and you've got an ugly and worse sounding R8.
12:31 Controls? For INDICATORS?!
Lexus lc500 naturally aspirated option
Thanks J, seems a good car, but can't say it looks like one, which for a 'supercar', is essential. 🙏🙏
£150K+….. Not a chance! I would be looking 911 Turbo S for that money!
But a 1st Gen Manual V10 with low miles for around £80k - Oh yes please!
£50k more like
Proton Saga Aeroback 1.3
👌👌👌
That Proton Saga is sure 1 of the greatest car produced by Malaysian 😂
Big N/A meat and potatoes engine? How about a Corvette. If you can drop "supercar" from the requirements and drop down to just sports car and you can add Mustang and Camaro.
Lmao...nobody is cross shopping an R8 and a mustang...
R8 and Viper ACR maybe
@@Legend57. No one said anything about cross shopping. Jay said the R8 had the last large N/A engine. He's wrong.
Not a V10 fan especially concerning Audi/VW
No more V10s??????🥺🥺🥺😭😭😭
I think the R8 is one of the better cars that can be a daily.
Thats no looker from the side
I don't understand the people who claim the R8 is an overgrown TT, mainly because unlike the TT, the R8 cannot include in it's family tree the likes of the VW golf, or Jetta......or my old Skoda Octavia 1.9 diesel. Brilliant car that Octavia, but it's far from sporty, it was a surprise to find that it's actually quite closely related to the MK1 TT. It is not at all closely related to the R8 and if it was, I would be asking serious questions of Audi
Unfortunately this is the result of the two being styled similarly - the general public seem very eager to overlook the massive difference in under-the-skin engineering
Sounds like a grown up RS3!
I wanted one. Now I don't.
wonder how hard it would be to retrofit the older better looking body style
Just get a last year 1st gen with the dct
lmao, why?
1.8 tons? I will stick to my alpine
The only thing I can't stand about the R8 is the vw interior.
Damn........his non-stop waffling, just gives me a headache.
Why wouldn’t this R8 be great what has changed? Nothing, it got great reviews back in the day why wouldn’t it today.
The best car on todays road is without doubt the 7.5 golf R. End of
Such an incredible engine, but you can't see it. For that reason, if I could buy a R8 Spyder, I wouldn't. Same as 911's.
Ahem.... Gordon Murray?
What about him?
@@JayEmmOnCars Is his 4 litre v12 not shouty enough for you?
Tbh I’d buy an atom for fun and a boring family car and still have tens of thousands left over for the price of these. Can’t see the appeal
Interior? I'd still take my F430 any day. Nowt you don't need.
... a powerplant that torques to you? ...
Somehow these look older than the 2007 R8.
Perhaps if you're blind and a timetraveller
Ford Mustang
For me personally if you're wanting a good value supercar I dont think you can do better than a McLaren, this or a 600LT spyder?🤷🏽♂️
The 600LT is just sensational to drive, but to live with is a pain in the ass
@@JayEmmOnCars Very true, probably don't want to daily a 600LT. Appreciate the reply keep up the awesome content!
What an awesome car it was such a shame they looked like a bag of smashed arse holes inside and about as reliable as something from Longbridge 😂
Of course it’s still got it unless you own a dozen Supercars 🤦🏻♂️,,
You look sort of sat on it, not in it.
EV's make me feel sick.
Unfortunately it has still got it fir all of you under 6ft....
I'm 6'4" and fit just fine. Both in the old and the new R8.
