- Moonstone Island mixes Pokemon with Stardew Valley and a card battler, and now it's on Nintendo Switch! I've been playing it on Steam for a while and can recommend it fully! With it in the news again, I got to wondering: What are each of the Moonstone Island Spirits based on? Why are they named what they are? And why are Bonefire, Fishbo, and Burgloon the best?

20:39 GG! Conclusion!
Gnoggin, hosted by its creator Lockstin, is a show delving into the mysteries of Pokemon! (and other games sometimes too). Explaining everything there is to explain! Why is each Pokemon given the type it has? What are their origins? What is the lore of the Pokemon world and the design inspirations? And what does it all have to do with alchemy? Let's Go find out! - Hry
A couple things worth mentioning:
Firstly, similar to Coolslime and Radlad, Spyreling is also from another game! It's from Slay the Spire, specifically the Fat Gremlin enemy.
Secondly, Pombomb from Cassette Beasts was recently added to the game as a Fire Spirit.
I love that, I love when games have little crossovers like that
18:34 That's actually awesome, because this was something I was actually pondering recently - that "Missingno." is a name arisen from a glitch, not an intentional feature, and thus is not an official character the same way Pikachu is. This means that the name likely isn't _trademarked,_ so a game could totally use the name and get away with it! Hence, Missingno is here!
19:42 A d-20 with a bunch of eyes that changes elemental types? That's just Miracle Matter from Kirby 64
That's what I was thinking too
About both Missingno and Overseer:
- Missingno being a hand is funny given the heavy hints towards Gen 1 Pokemon it has, after all, Missingno was usually accompanied by a "Pokemon" called Deadhand.
- Overseer having the ability to change types makes sense seeing how it is heavily inspired on Zero Two's first form from Kirby 64, a Boss that also could change its "type" at will.
That wasn't Zero Two, but Miracle Matter you're thinking of.
@@LegendofKal Eh, aren't both of them the same entity, though?.
1:08 YO-KAI WATCH SPOTTED! SUMMONING TOUGH!
bruff stuff rufe bluf bing bang blinkin stand bring bang tough
i did it by memory
"Archaea" are also a group of microorganisms similar to but distinct from bacteria. The main feature about them is that they live in extreme environments. Maybe implying that it could survive death itself? 😊 wouldn't that be a neat touch?
Adding to the fact they also made one called Karyote with the same typing, I absolutely agree
Then Missingno could also be the missing link between modern and ancient creatures 🤔
12:19 Spyreling is also based on the Fat Gremlin from Slay the Spire, hence its name and its ability, Slay the Fire
Wooow such a honor to see the game I worked on be featured in this channel!! Never thought something like this would happen haha I loved it!! The editing is amazing! 🥰🥰
I designed some Spirits for the game, so let me get you a few info:
3:36 The first idea I had for his name was "Timbus" which would be "Tio + Nimbus", I'm from Brazil and here "Tio" is like "Uncle" an older male person (the moustache haha), but the other option that the director liked more was "Claudio" because is a really common name here in Brazil for an older person too.. We thought it would be funny to have a Spirit with such a mundane name haha also the "Claud" is from "Cloud"
11:45 Sheemp is just the word "Sheep and Imp" combined haha it was supposed to be a Demon Sheep that evolves into a Demon Goat, also his fur is black because "black sheep" is a phrase we use for bad people
14:54 You got me...
That's it!! The team keep adding Spirits all the time, so for the people who liked them just keep an eye on future updates 😁
Late reply but it's fascinating how phrases or expressions change depending on location or language. Here in USA (or at least the part I live) black sheep is used for outcasts or people don't belong.
@@morgancrabtree6248 Yeah, here it has kinda of the same meaning, but usually they don't belong because they aren't seen as good people.. That's why that cousin that's always on trouble we call him "black sheep" haha
@@adriel.013 That's still really neat.
I love them so much, and the spritework is beautiful
If I can give a simple idea, Sky or Space Whales are really cool, it could be a psychic type
"Get me out of here, I'm proving a point!" ROFL XD
Thinking of doing Yokai Watch in the near future? Anything from 1-4 and nothing else. Idk if it takes a while and appears as a two-parter or so, I bet you can’t speed run an explained video about their name etymology and design origin beforehand.
19:42 Overseer reminds of a Kirby 64 boss: Miracle Matter. Both are blood red eyes on a 20 sided die shape with the only difference being that Miracle Matter is white, not purple
Overseer also resembles the base form of Miracle Matter, the (semi)final boss from Kirby 64 which can change forms to use the same elements Kirby used throughout the game against him.
A couple of these spirits look remarkably similar to bosses from Kirby 64, Tidan looks like Magman but made of water instead of magma, and Overseer is literally just purple Miracle Matter
To note about Arkeya is that like Karyote it’s named after archea another branch of the evolutionary tree and Karyote is made of multiple eyes as opposed to Arkeya’s one eye because eularyotes are the basis of multicellular organisms
How funny, I thought of the same connection to Archaea but focused on their extremophile nature. Maybe implying Arkeya could "survive even death" as the dark type xD our points are completely parallel to each other but still kind of support the theory :3
4:14 A fishbowl on *Spongebob's* legs, if his shoes were blue.
I think Rablit might be a joke about Lopunny by using the Sexy Lamp theory.
It’s a major award!
The what theory?
@@ArcherOfHoshido the Sexy Lamp theory dictates that a character is badly written if they can be replaced with a sexy lamp without altering the story. Mainly directed at characters made only for looks.
1:08 YOKAI WATCH MENTION!!!!
5:45 Birdbrain's royal garb could also be a reference to Skeksis from the Dark Crystal.
I look forward to Lockstin and Knoggin making videos of the monsters and there in origins for Monster Tamers it is just cool to see and gives the devs support for the game a win win!
Quit playin n do all season 1 Bakugan
I support this comment
OG Bakugan will always reign supreme!
Wait.....there are some that actually unironically like Bakugan? 😅 I wasn't aware
@@burninggames9587 new shits cool too!
@@Tactical_Turtwig Way more than people who like the sponsored weeaboo nonsense he usually covers tbh
Spyreling looks exactly like those Fat Gremlin enemies in Slay the Spire wielding the same weapon as well.
notably about starsee, is that IRL sea stars have eyes at the end of their arm too
Fascinating combo. While I'm not that big on Stardew Valley, I do like the style this game has going for it. ^^
0:17 Not gonna lie the fact it's part card battler sold me even more
I really want him to do this kind of video with every My singing monsters monster.
18:11
Also the "eu-" prefix in eukaryote means good, normal, or acceptable. Like, euglycemia means a normal level of glucose in your blood (which is good). So, the absence of the "eu-" prefix could mean Karyote is abnormal, bad, or evil. Hence, the typing.
I'm saddened to realize that L&G never made a video to cover the different creatures in Monster Sanctuary. Game is a bit dated now, but here's hoping. 😅
2:03 Longlogs face looks Like a whispy Woods reference aswell:D
I cannot tell you how much happiness seeing this video gave me.... I really love this game!!!
Starfish do actually have eyes at the end of each arm, so that design totally checks out.
12:20 slay the spire reference
There are some HEAVY studio ghibli vibes from these lil dudes! I really like it!
Well, I think I'm going to buy this tonight. Thanks Lockstin!
I gotta say spyreling looks suspiciously like a slay the spire gremlin
Considering the refrences to other games, it probably is
Lockstin sincerely thank you for bringing my attention to these amazing creature collecting games!!! As a creature designer, I live for creature designs 💜💙💚
gonna have to get this game now, thanks for covering it!
7:08 Also Taddle has a tail. Tattletale.
I have a... fairly unusal idea.
Every Chemy (from Kamen Rider Gotchard) explained.
12:23 and spire because slay the spire.
The sprite animation is incredible ! Super expressive and interesting to look at. Delightful! Thank you for the video!
10:46 shoutout to wizard101 rep XD
Starsee: those are actually roughly where starfish eyes are! They’re on the end of each arm. Stephen Hillenburg’s early SpongeBoy education comics include this depiction of
16:49 I believe it's also a reference to Schroeder's Cat, although in this case the cat is definitely dead.
Can't wait for you to do all digimon :D
9:32 is that.... A NEW ZEALAND ADVENTURE REFERENCE !?
Spyerling look familiar somehow… ;3
What was that Ceratosaurus pronunciation...
Horrendous. It's the first time I've ever heard it pronounced like that
“Sarah-taw-sir-us” 💀
Small Octopus are called Pups. I think.
Scratch that. They are called Hatchings or Fry
Can‘t wait for this lad to spend an unholy amount of money so he can show us all the gen 6 pokemon fit plushies. I always wait for his review before I buy some ^^
I love how this game brought in a few crossover Monsters.
We don't see that enough in Monster Taming games.
Tis because he be a salty sea dog! 4:53
I knew that you would do an explaining for Moonstone Island and I've been playing that game for a while now (From my pov, it's really cute). I was wondering if you'd also cover Subeta (A Neopets-like) and Kadomon next.
Longlog gives me the same, giggly serotonin spike that Rootle does.
Eau is also Water in french (referencing Beabeau ) :)
Oh so it’s not bong penguin!
🐧
5:51 is that choos goose
i really enjoyed this game, the fact that there was no stamina really made it a completely chill experience,i 100%ted the game
This seems like my childhood dream come true since I dreamed of a crossover between Pokémoon and then-Harvest Moon
Pixel art
Mon-like
At least one food creature
*I NEED*
If I recall correctly, the devs put out a Twitter post asking people to name the monster now called Brickhouse, and then chose their favorite. So the origins were that Twitter user, I guess!
7:15 holy crap its the coromon guy the one who chonktoads
I’m a huge fan of ooblets so I very much might have to check this game out
Yo-kai watch Yo-kai! Explain them!
In germany rabbits are sometimes called meister lampe (master lamp) so that could be an explanation
Really looking forward to these monster catcher name explanation videos. I hope Bulu Monster is on the list though :>
There has to be some Schrödinger's cat inspiration for catsket I mean dead cat in a box possessing the box bringing it to life making it both live and dead.
Fun fact: Some sea stars actually do have eyes on the end of each arm. Very rudimentary eyes, but eyes all the same.
Good to know it's on Switch. I've been waiting.
I honestly think this game looks kinda neat. I’m not the biggest fan of starter valley but this looks cool.
You should make a playlist of those videos
Paldea still needs a Japanese names explained video.
Spyreling is 500% a reference to Slay the Spire. Fat Gremlin. Same shape, colors, and even weapon.
Still waiting for yo-kai watch design origins explained ☹
This just makes me appreciate pokemon more.
An SMT V Vengeance all demons explained vid would be cool.
i'm surprised you didn't show a Legend of Korra's dark spirit in Arkeya's description. i think they look very alike, as a purple snakey flat dark spirit with a prominent symbol on its "face"
I just started playing this game and I’m obsessed.
You should do a Zelda enemies explained. Name origins and design origins are always ontetesting to learn.
Will you ever cover Yo-Kai Watch? I know a lot of Yo-Kai in that game are recolors of another Yo-Kai with a different name (you could probably make a video exclusively on all the Jibanyan variants, Jibanyan being the Pikachu of the series) but I still think it would be interesting to see. Though, with the amount exclusive to spin-offs or are in games that haven't released in America, you might need multiple videos.
Overseer seems to be HEAVILY based on Miracle Matter from Kirby 64
I feel like a lot of the names in this game are really, really simplistic...
Most of the designs too
Huh, Overseer looks like Miracle Matter from Kirby 64 which could change element types at will thus making it “any type” based on context.
Multi-sided die? An eye on each side? Can be any type? Miracle Matter?!
I can’t escape Massachusetts, it haunts me where ever I go.
LOCKSTIN!!!!!!! DROP ANOTHER NEO GEXIS VIDEO AND MY LIFE IS YOURS!
Great Video BTW. Loved seeing this get covered
Just me or is Ribbite possibly looking like a mushroom or toadstool, frog and toad? If so that is awesome
The animators of this game had so much freaking fun
No way- this sounds awesome.
Will you continue the story of Pokemon Legends Neo Ghetsis? Because i'm really love it, please!🥰
Dane here: you said hygge very well :]
All of these creatures are adorable!
Overseer look a lot like Miracle Matter from Kirby 64. have the same ability to have any elements too.
the minecraft iron golem is based on the robots form laputa and the Guardian reminds me more of the gardening robot from laputa
Could Sheemp also be a play on sheep/Imp? Since some imps are kinda "hellish" and hell type places are commonly associated with fire
Karyote “carry out” the bidding of Missingno
Karyote could also come from Carion or dead meat. How spooky
I would like a playlist with all the names explained of these non pokemon as it hard to search for and the only playlist is of pokemon names
Stardew Valley lets gooooo!
Birdbrain reminds me of Choose Goose haha
He needs to do all Bakugan explains. Emphasis on ALL.
