Wow I knew I didn't like these starters because they all turn into humanoids, but didn't realize how much I dislike them until it became apparent that I cannot even focus on this video because they're just so obvious and boring to me 😅
Good one
Ad goes from 12:50 to 14:20 since he couldn't be bothered to put a chapter there, you're welcome.
I may try it! I saw a Naganadel plush listing for a good price, so hopefully I can find another thing I want to justify the shipping cost!
I'm surprised you didn't mention the British animated band The Gorillaz when talking about rillaboom

I like how these videos turned from “what is a whooper” to hour long history essays tangentially related to Pokemon
Lol yea
Facts
Just gives me an excuse to say what I'm watching is educational
Worms don't actually hate the vibrations when the two sticks are rubbed together, they actually make a vibration similar to hard rainfall so that attracts them to the surface.
Actually that’s also a myth as well. The reason why the vibrations from worm grunting works is because it’s similar to the vibrations made by moles digging through the earth
Yeah, I’ve heard something similar, but that it sounds like pigs rooting around, which they would obviously ALSO want to flee from lol
Worms getting ding dong ditched by everyone.
Just a small clarification, from what I've heard, chameleons don't actually use their colors as camouflage, it's more of a display of communication for other chameleons, and any camouflage is coincidental.
Yeah you're right, their colour's due to different coloured cells in their skin called chromatophores that grow and shrink, and the way evolution works meant that a chameleon that was green when relaxed (depends on the species, some are usually brown coz theg live in dead leaves) would coincidentally be harder for predators to see than a neon purple one. So the green genes were passed on since they survived more often and it helps that they conveniently often live in trees. But an excited chameleon can be bright red or blue, panther chameleons get especially colourful when angry or horny haha
That's pretty cool
@@atgosh So they're basically mood rings?
It's a mix of both realy. That said their "base color" is usually enough camuflage, after all they mostly live in areas if the world where the foilage is green all year.
Well the camouflage part is usually done when they feel threatened, so it's not purely coincidental, but yes, it's mostly from people training them to do it or from communication
Another spy gadget at Inteleon's disposal is in its tail, specifically the sharp frill that comes out of the dark blue line, which is a reference to switchblades. That same frill becomes huge and spirals all around the tail in its Gmax form, making any attempts to climb the tower a not very... Sharp idea.
19:02 "Chameleon actor", showing a bunch of Johnny Depp roles, including Rango, a literal chameleon actor. XD
You: “I had an emo phase”
Me: *pretends to be shocked*
Actually, Spain tried to conquer Belice. but its entire fleet was destroyed by a storm and they couldn't afford the conflict anymore.
After reading the first book in the Tarzan series I was amazed to read about how the Dum Dum (some sort of rituals the apes did) seemed to be like drumming on logs. Which makes it even more amazing to be that Disney got Phil Collins (a world famous drummer) to do the soundtrack to Tarzan and then Pokémon has a gorilla that plays the drums that could be based on the Cadbury Gorilla who played a Phil Collins song in the advert.
It could all be coincidental but it still fascinates me that things can be that way.
This gen also had another mythical ape, star of the last pokemon film, which was a Tarzan-esque musical
Sobble’s name comes sob, because it cries a lot, and bubble.
But together, it sounds like soluble without the middle syllable, since it’s skin “dissolves” when in contact in water to become invisible.
I hate how accurately most of the Intellion section describes me as an introverted person. Maybe this is why I love Intellion…
I love inteleon my only complaint is that it wasn’t water/ghost type the set up was perfect.
Damn
I love the adorable lizard. Watching him go for such a shy cuite to a swave snd cool spie was perfect. ^^

Scorbunny line my beloved
There's a meme going around that compares the Galar starters to the Powerpuff Girls' design. It's just so fitting it's almost a possibility.
Who matches whom?
@@JamesDavy2009
Scorbunny: Blossom
Sobble: Bubbles
Grookey: Buttercup
And Zarude is Mojojojo.
Wouldn't be too far if they're actually referencing the characters because they're so similar.
@@hanzquejano7112 Not wrong there.
It is unfortunate that Rillaboom isn’t Grass/Normal (sound based moves are mostly normal type) or Grass/Rock (because ROCK and roll music)
If they gave them secondary types then Cinderace would have probably been fire fighting, although I could see a case for fire dark now but we had a fire dark starter the gen before, and for Inteleon im not sure but maybe water dark although we had a water dark starter 2 gens before, could see a case for water ghost or water flying
For Rillaboom... There are many Indigenous Tribes in Brazil who utilize Pau de Chuva ("Rain Stick", in a literal translation). It's a must-object for Rain Dances in those tribes. So, Another relation between Music, Wood and Rain.
I was waiting for this. I couldn't believe when gen 9 starters explanation got released first. Way to pull a Pokemon Go sir Lockstin
I just think its funny how rillaboom's shiny would 100% make sense if it was the autumn color scheme since it really fits the concept of Gigantopithecus but they decided to make it subtle and go for the yellow-green color lol.
I feel like rillabooms design would be perfect if they just embeamed the drum in his chest. Since gorillas are famous for banging their chests.
That does sound like a rather fitting concept. Maybe when it gets it potential regional form, that could be a possibility.
I've been saying this since the leaks back in the day. Him just pulling a drum out of his ass is stupid. We could have had a monkey with wood armor
@@yunaka_gaming He's doesn't really pull it out of his ass.
At which point it might've been more fitting to design Rillaboom after a marching band drummer.
@@501Magnum It's not like the one we have isn't fitting. Especially since Lockstin explained it, it really does fit.
sobble is just a lil baby
Yippe! Funny bunny and funky monkey!
And Scaredy Lizzie
Crying iguana-ing
And Bond, James Bond
Yes. Monke and wabbit
Yeah no one cares about the other line
6:46 as a professional plant nerd. The best I can offer to that claim is, people who are more likely to play music to plants, probably also know and care about plants more. So, while you can find plant growers who do play music, that music part might just be an unnecessary step. Causality doesn't mean causation.
Also, after intensive ways to not make google confused and show me the thing I'm not looking for. According to Michigan State University, wind helps a seedling grow a stronger stem. (I think also just general movement of plants might stimulate vegetative growth. But google, doesn't like cooperating with searches for that) So, maybe the sound waves can move the plants enough to stimulate that response??? Which of I remember correctly, louder music genres did in some tests yield better results. But take that with a pile of salt and look it up yourself before spreading this without fact check.
Before I finish the video:
The middle stage starters look like they're some highschool sitcom.
Drizzile is the generic angsty emo teen. apparently able to set up water balloon traps to dissuade others from entering its cave to avoid social contact.
Thwakey is the band drummer who gets into violent outbursts. Just look at the way it uses its two sticks to beat up its opponents.
And Raboot is the angsty teen varsity "jock". compared to your typical jock stereotype, he's the new guy, and looks scrawny compared to the other bigger members.
Lol yea
I love grookey, especially as a Phil Collins fan when he sang tarzan songs. I had a few nicknames for grooky from tarzan I had in mine when playing pokemon sword and sheild lol 😅
And Phil Collins put music yo the Cadbury gorilla ad
This video just made me appreciate Inteleon even more than I already do. I had no idea about his dark membrane shades!
Another aspect with these starters that I noticed were how people involve themselves with events.
The Cinderace line represents how a person directly involves themselves with events, Rillaboom participates just supporting on the side lines and Intelleon sits on the side lines not involving itself.
I just realized something mind-blowing. Rillaboom DOESN'T learn belly drum. I never really used one until recently so I always assumed it did. Kind of a wasted opportunity, huh?
I mean it was already a broken Pokemon in competitive, Belly Drum would be insane
do you want to give Leon another OP pokemon?
in the anime, He flattened the majority of both Alain and Diantha with ONLY Rillaboom.
@@TheHammerGuy94 Yes, absolutely. Monkes everywhere would be so proud. 😊
We eventually had to deal w/ BellyJet Azu, even though everyone used to say the reason they didn't allow Azu to learn both Belly Drum & Aqua Jet at the same time was "b/c it'd be too broken," lol. And then Grassy Glide's BP was nerfed. Signs point to BellyGlide Rilla in the somewhat far future.
@@emerfirek Give me my Belly Glide Rilla supported by Triage Comfey. I dare you.
Never liked Pokemon that included "props" in their design, but I do have a new appreciation for Rillaboom now at least. I can respect it.
2:28 bonksticks? Rockstin reference?
Sobble is also partially based on the Crested Newt, a species found in Great Britain.
22:20 Even though this might not happen, a cool idea for a Regional Variant for Cinderace is to have it be Fire/Ghost Type, using its ghost powers to have skulls on fire to reference that 🔥💀
honestly one of my favorite starter groups in terms of theming. Perfectly fits for the England region and has such synergy
Druids were not vegans or vegetarians, they commonly ate stuff like wild bour. You can look up that kind of stuff at tasting history with Matt Miller.
Based Tasting History fan.
Honestly, I love Sobble and its line. Grookey is also such a adorable little drummer. XD fun fact I named most of my Rillabooms after a famous drummer of one band or another. XD
Sounds funny
Is Ringo one of yours?
Rillaboom:

are you sure this isn't Zarude?
Unfortunately most people forget Zarude exists.
"I like shorts! They're comfy and easy to wear!" Classic Youngster. Happy to have caught that reference.
His name is Ben, BTW.
Anyone else think Bongorilla would've been a great name for Rillaboom or is it just me?
I'm just here to say Inteleon is a great Pokemon, and a perfect final evo of Sobble. I love this spy chameleon, and this video amplified that
Gigantamax Cinderace is what Arabia Fats wishes his Stand was.
"Plant Bending"
i think you mean Leafbending.
I snorted out loud when he water-boarded the Pikachu plush 😂
Alos seel like the sobble like is an evolution of plays. Sobble: school play, drizzile: comedy and tragedy, inteleon: movies theatre
Inteleon is the spy movie genre afterall
@@pokechatter still an evolution of play and theatre
@@mikerenois2220 I’m not disagreeing with you overall. Perhaps the whole line is just the concept of Drama overall.
@@pokechatter that would make alot of sense. Very astute observation
2:20 - I was just thinking yesterday that I want to see the alternate timeline where they actually used that on Benson AND worked.
Also, I sometimes do that to stim after that show.
Here's another potential connection to British pop culture I noticed pertaining to Scorbunny. Considering its a rabbit with predominantly white fur that runs around very fast, maybe it also pulls some slight inspiration from the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland?
Also, Rillaboom being a gorilla that plays a drum could be a reference to Donkey Kong. Which works especially well since not only is Donkey Kong also a fellow Nintendo character, but Rare, the video game studio that was the original developer of the Donkey Kong Country games, is based out of England!
I think Rillaboom not having a wooden drum chest that it beats with its fists was such a missed opportunity.
Same to a lesser extent for Inteleon not shooting out of its mouth in place of its hands. Like, a water…chameleon tongue that it snipes with.
I've seen people do redesigns for Rillaboom that incorporates the chest drum concept, and I've genuinely never seen the idea come out looking good. At worst the chest drum comes out looking like giant nipples, and it just looks really uncomfortable. I think Pokémon making the drum something it carried around was the right call
Shooting water out of its mouth is boring because every water type does that. Its got literal finger guns which is unqiue and was never done before
You mentioning the giant nipples will now make me not see this pokemon the same again if it does that@@nataliecoronado4206
@@nataliecoronado4206 Maybe a more subtle design, like making it partially wooden? I’m no designer, but it just seemed like the logical progression of “drum gorilla.”
@@Nutleaf420 The finger guns are cool, but I meant more of a tongue made of water, which hasn’t been done before.
I mean, Keldeo shoots water out of the closest thing it has to fingers too, but it’s a horse, so hooves.
That’s what I mean by the water from the mouth. Like, more chameleon-like.
Honestly, they could even do both. Blastoise has cannons, but also shoots water from its legs and mouth. Inteleon could easily have a water tongue and finger guns, but alas, I lack the creative muscles to realize the idea.
Every time I see cinderace do the sliding on the knees pose, I just hear Renaldo saying “SSUUUUUUUUIIIII!!!”
The Sobble line is my favorite Pokémon, and I think that in addition to being inspired by growing up shy and secret agents and snipers that line is also inspired by changelings. Specifically, the kind of changelings that were made to explain autistic people, like me. A person that is slightly off maybe considered fay touched. This at least makes sense to me.
I highly doubt that
@@DarthLiam-gd1wc at the start of sword and shield hype you told me that sobble was going to turn into a sniper I would have serious doubt.
@@nettlesandsnakes9138 90% of pokemon do that, if you think the galar starters specifically do it, you'd be wrong. Just look at dratini, clamperl, remoraid, and various others
I wasn't aware that Cinderace had an Aztec mythos reference in it. The more you know, I guess.
So Rillaboom is a Druid class? Well, crap... (scraps Rillaboom Barbarian character I made)
You can be a barb-druid... right?
@@emerfirek Of course, but I was expecting a more melee/marshal focused build for Rillaboom. Though, to be honest, Grass types being able to gain more from healing definitely pairs well with Druid... (This is based on some homebrew I am working on, FYI.)
Some druid practices survived in the welsh church.
My grandad was a druid but its completly different to the original meaning i think it basically meant someone who did something for the local community
Sir Gawain famously fought a green man armed with an axe. His suit of armour, skin colour, hair colour, and axe all green. Only his eyes were a different colour. Red as holly berries. They fought twice, one winter solstice and the next winter solstice, the first time Gawain beheaded the Green man, the second time the green man won but Gawain kept his head
22:53 common misconception, but the one who was sacrificed was actually the leader of the winning team - it was seen as an honor
Damn, that's actually even worse. 💀
After all, why would the gods want a loser as a sacrifice?
One of the highest in fact.
Pokémon lore never stops being awesome.
Fun fact about Cinderace many people think it's based on a striker but it's actually based on a defender to be specific a (Libero) which is a defensive position it is when a defender comes forward to connect the defence to the midfield or to play as a fake defender and join the attack as an attacking midfielder it requires a lot of versatility and that's why Cinderace's ability changes it's type.
The wise tree men part is kinda true for orangutans! In Indonesian Orangutan(Orang+Hutan) just means jungle person
"Orang" being person and "Hutan" being Jungle/Forest
Excuse me, I think you forgot the coolest part of Huitzlopochtli, in that he singlehandedly keeps the earth from waking up and eating space and time itself from its hundreds of stony alligator mouths.
2:14 No wonder Rillaboom is good against Intelleon
Fun fact: traditional Japanese taiko are made by cutting a whole tree trunk and shaping the trunk itself into a drum, rather than using separate wood planks. Here in the United States, Japanese Americans didn't have access to that kind of carpentry, so taiko drums are made out of reclaimed wine barrels from wineries.
Just a small clarification, in the mesoamerican ball game, the loser's captain wasn't the one being sacrificed, it was the winner. Having your blood poured out to the gods was seen as a great honor!
I can attest to the "do plants grow faster with music"-thingy, as I tested it in an highschool project of mine. I put watercress in three same-sized cardboard boxes along with some cheap, same-brand mp3-players. One box had the mp3-players play classical music like Vivaldi, one box had heavy/death metal (example: Blitzkrieg from Kill 'Em All), and one box had no music playing as a reference. I made sure only the music was different in all boxes (same number of seeds, same substrate, same environment, same equipment, same lights, etc.)
Results were quite cool. Don't know the exact numbers anymore, but the seeds exposed to classical music grew around 30% longer than those without music. Meanwhile the seeds exposed to heavy/death metal either grew very poorly or had died. Didn't test for significancy or anything (I wasn't that old and wise yet), but by just eyeing there was a very obvious difference between the three boxes.
It is an easily replicable experiment without too many costs, so I would suggest anyone to try it themselves.
I can't think of much else to comment about other than ask for more deep dives into Pokémon designs. They're just so well done and have inspired me to go deep myself with my own fakemon ideas
10:17 hilarious - it looks like the arrangement of these statues is a hand flipping us off. 😂
I’ve always liked Drizzile, but I have a whole new appreciation for them now.

I am autistic myself so I know this
I'm autistic and agree.
Hasn't every region 's (since alola) starters been based on entertainment, alola as circus, galar as music, movies and sport and paldea as dance, jesters and singing?
Tiny correction, in the mesoamerican ball game, in some cultures, it was the WINNERS who were sacrificed, as it was considered an honor to the gods to be as such. In place, their families would gain socioeconomic status, and basically move one up in the social heiriarchy.
Again, I could be wrong, this is all things I remember from a Mayan tour like 8 years ago.
Cinderace's giantamax form look a lot laharl from disgaea riding a meteor.
I am not kidding, look it up.
Same giant ball of fire, same pose while standing on top of the ball of fire and cinderace's long ears perfectly matches laharls two long pieces of hair.
Also in case your wondering if this a one time time thing for laharl, it is not.
Laharl has a move in game that summons a meteor for him to ride down to onto top of his enemies.
