      Probably no, but they certainly can force/inspire the big two to make more gravel-oriented cassettes (with more 1T jumps between cogs).

    • @stefanwagener
      @stefanwagener Před 5 měsíci +3

      I especially like the progressive geared cassette of Campa compared to the rather linear spread of Shimano. But the options to go for the third party smaller chainrings or wheelset is much more limiting than with Shimano. Looking to the future and thinking about spare parts, it is much more expensive and will become more difficult to replace components of Campa group set.

      @@savagepro9060Exactly the drivetrain I've been using for over 20 years, quite happily. And I've never had to buy or use specialty Campy tools, including that ridiculously overpriced chain breaking tool. I very carefully use a very basic and cheap tool to break new chains to the proper length, then connect them using a master link. Never had a problem in well over 10,000 miles. Reinstalling a pin properly probably does require a better tool, but using a master link that's a non-issue for me. Do people still do that?
      Of course I've never installed a headset or prepped a fork and let a LBS do that. But these are not the sorts of things that most cyclists do often and my bike's headset isn't Campy (Cane Creek). I did install a Campy BB though, and did need a specialized tool, but from Tacx, not Campy. And there's that silly and clunky chainring bolt tool, which costs around $5 if that. With the 13 speed and gearing options, this Ekar GT can almost be considered road bike worthy. At least for the majority of cyclists, who doesn't do highly competitve racing. I know 1x 13sp with those cassettes would be plenty enough for me for gravel but also for the road.
    That said, for a purely specific gravel use, I still would choose mechanical, with a GRX or a Sram Apex, but not Ekar as it's still the most expensive of the bunch. And again, if racing is out of the equation, the best bang for buck gravel specific groupset is Microshift Sword (1x or 2x) with good quality mechanical disc brakes. It covers 99% of every gravel rider's needs, with the added bonus of being bulletproof.

      🤔 curious minds here at GCN megabase, why would you choose mechanical over electronic for specific gravel use?

    • @zoufmalade
      @zoufmalade Před 5 měsíci

      @h Mainly repairability. I know electronic shifting is very reliable, but it's easier to pack a derailleur cable and a multi-tool (Or even bodge something with a zip tie...) than having to rely on a bike shop and finishing your ride with only one gear if your electronic derailleur goes wrong. Even more so when doing an ultra distance event or a multi-day bikepacking trip. And also gravel allows for more rides remote from any form of civilisation.
      Also the fact that I sometimes forget to recharge my lights or my head unit, so I don't need an extra battery to think about 😂

      @@gcntech I just can underline zoufmalade's post. If you use your gravel bike for racing and afternoon rides... electronic or mechanical works great. Choose whatever you like. If you use your gravel bike for bike packing, too, it's just a decision for simplicity. One more part that can fall apart or fail and is not easy to replace.

    Just built up a CX bike with 1x11-speed Shimano GRX. Mix of 600 and 800 series, some old Ultegra-level levers (because I found a second-hand pair for cheap) and brake calipers (because all the new ones are only available in flat-mount variety which is incompatible with the old frame).
    If I'd be building a gravel bike, I'd most likely use something similar: whatever is available second-hand (not Ekar) and is compatible with whatever I already happen to have (definitely not Ekar). If not for DoubleTap and XDR, SRAM might tempt me with the (officially supported) wider range cassette options.

    I would build a gravel bike with "carbon Ekar". It's only 1200€ at R-2 bikes, so I guess the real price of the GT will be lower? I would pick it for reliability reasons and to not have to charge one more battery (front and rear lights and spares, wahoo element, powermeter, phone etc) which is a real pain when bike packing. Im also into ultra distance riding now days and it seems SRAM wireless shifting can't be trusted in longer events (Lacland Morton had issues and Justinas had problems at AMR). Shimano isn't really an option for me as their cranks fall to pieces and their power meters doesn't measure accurately, so I have some trust issues there. And you talked a bit about bringing an even higher level group set also. I don't know if that is a good idea when it's used for gravel riding and bike packing? I mean it's better to have something that you don't need to be super carful with and that you can afford to replace components on.

  • @volkerdietrich6019

    I switched from Shimano and Sram to (the underestimated) Campa Chorus two years ago. Just because other group sets were not available. Great! 24 gears mechanical, no battery, no problems. Now, with Campa on my list for group sets, I bought a gravel bike with Ekar... not great - absolute fantastic! The best group set I ever had... 13 real gears make my gravel bike just by switching the wheels to a very good road bike. I am not racing any more, but I still love to get some age group KOM's on Strava and it works. So guys at Campa, your marketing does place the new Ekar GT as a pure Gravel group set, again. Why? If money wouldn't be an object I would even replace my Chorus on the road bike with an Ekar! The gear ratios you can choose are good for any purpose. Could the new Ekar be the new group set of the people? Well, for the more wealthy people and it beats with the 13 gears available the one by group sets and lot of two by group sets with simplicity (no battery) and performance. Dear Campa, for your success, place it as a road group set, too. And yes, I am a fan since I use Campa 🙂

    I’m SUPER happy and thrilled that Campy is showing up with a new line/level of EKAR.
    I’m reassured with this initiative cuz I purchased EKAR carbon last year, with which I’ve ridden approx 1200km. I appreciate its range, ergonomic, braking power, modulation and most importantly its MECHANICAL. I do not care for electrical-digital on my bike.
    Also I’m happy to see a new 10-48 cassette (I hope the GT drive train is compatible with Carbon).
    I think a 40t crank with a 10-48would be the ideal setup for me here in Canada-Quebec terrain.
    So GT gives me and all more choices and redundancy in availability of spare or replaceable parts. This is awesome news.
    I have no issues with a 9t cog, as gravel is not about TT efficiency, the 9t is used downhill to not spin out a 55-65kph. Once above 65, I’m happy to coast along ;).
    Thus I obtain efficient power train on the 11,12,13,14 cogs as I, like the great majority of riders cannot push a 40 crank on a 9t cog at 45-55kph on the flat for very long anyway.
    Cheers and Youppi for GT🎉

In a way, I am somewhat old school, in that I much prefer to have a tighter cassette with a second chain ring as I like to be able to have that 1 gear that I can be just the right cadence in so I am optimal. Ignoring this idea and moving to a more mountain bike concept is something that I think the average mid range cyclist for road/cross/gravel will end up not preferring.

When launching 12s last year, Shimano noted that 70% of GRX sales were still mechanical, which is the inverse of road demand. Customers aren't looking at gravel as being heirloom items, and a more budget Ekar makes sense.
