- You asked for it, but I never thought it would happen. Today I am driving an absolutely legendary machine. A 1989 Mercedes Benz 190E Evo I. One of only 502 cars produced, this is a homologation special of the finest order.
Not satisifed with the regular, screaming 4 cyclinder 2.5L AMG built engine, this car was equipped from the factory with a Power Pack upgrade - and it's special. Supplied by and on sale from JT Auto Classics (www.jtautoclassics.com)

That induction noise is superb and the exhaust really compliments the car. Couldn't care less about the on paper figures being quite modest, the sound and responsiveness is sure to make up for that :)
And so they do. It still feels punchy enough for back roads
Couldn't agree more. 👍
One of the best-sounding 'fours' I've ever heard.
My parents had a black 190E 2.0, bought new in 1985, when I was little. I love this car!
The 16V is on my list of ‘the fifteen cars I could afford ten-fifteen years ago but did not buy and I deeply regret’. I still had a 1985 2.0 auto and I loved it, apart from the uncomfortable seats.
A more civilized Mercedes from more civilized times when they could put real exhaust.
Did you mean to say " An elegant weapon for a more civilized age"?
Foosa dee Cat yep
Such incredible exhausts which destroyed the environment and sounded not even that good while doing it. 80s were interesting at best, certainly not more "civilized" than the modern times by any measure.
@@smh1245 The comment was about metal exhaust tip not entire system. Some premium cars today have two regular pipes hidden behind bumper and fake exhaust tips.
And also about sound. It is possible today to make car that have good sound note, but the sound muffling and isolation is so dense that now they are putting speakers to simulate engine noise.
As a e30 m3 owner and m5 owner. This is the only merc im seriously looking at adding to my garage. These are the same age as me. What an era for german cars the 80s was.
190E is my fav Merc ever! Especially the DTM one
My Dad & I are finally getting round to sorting the restoration of his 2.3-16 that's been in the family for over 30 years now. Just came back to watch this as worthwhile inspiration. The entire 190 16v lineup are something special. Would kill to modify the 2.3 to get closer to the performance of the 2.5 power-pack, just to squeeze a bit more out of it.
Thanks to JayEmm for a super day! great to give the car a run out and as a former 500e owner all I can say is the 190 Evolution is completely different gravy to drive..
The induction noise and the sound from that modest looking tailpipe is intoxicating! This car is from an era when the driver drove the car when pomp armed to our digital and computer aided cars that drives its self. Iconic E190 evo
This is one of the absolute GOAT cars. Absolutely love your videos and I was absolutely giddy watching you drive this masterpiece of a car.
Cheers George, it was a hell of a day
@@JayEmmOnCars That car looks incredible fun to test.
I feel like I'm going to regret watching your channel because it is so damn pleasant. Your are like a Clarkson who knows how to chill. A Hammond without little man syndrome. A May who isn't stuck.
Bravo mate. Bravo.
Cheers, I can see you working your way through the videos!
E30 m3 is a must now.
Btw nice video, like most of your videos. Looking forward to the next one.
Next one is equally amazing I think
So glad I’ve came across your channel the last couple days. Unbelievable production quality, with fantastic description and journalism !
This calls for an E30 M3 review! I happen to have one, you’re welcome to feature it. Located in Germany...
Needs to be a Sport Evolution
Corr, it's in top nick, this motor, inside, outside and underneath. Spotless.
Thanks for the review on this 80s hero car!, as a kid I wasn't too interested in Ferrari and lambo's etc. They just seems too unobtainable this and the E30 M3, Ur Audi Quattro(sport quattro), and Sierra Rs500 it seemed like one day you could own one if I saved all my pocket and paperound money I could afford one..
You get the best cars on youtube Jay!
I do get quite lucky
@John Mitchell I think you're gonna love Saturday's video
Thank you for this review.... definitely the OG... amazing machine
One of my favorite cars!! Thanks for reviewing it.
Good video, absolutely love the 190e
Great review. What a great sounding 4 cylinder Mercedes.
Sorry couldn’t be there on the day but pleased you had a great time filming Jayemm see you soon
The only thing the 190E 2.5-16 Evo I has got of AMG is the option of the Power Pack; the rest is pure Mercedes-Benz
Great review!
Jay - I am really enjoying the excellent content. You are just a pure enthusiast and have a great style. Keep it up!!
Fantastic punditry my man. Very enjoyable
Stunning car !
my great uncle had one a 85 190e 2.3 5 speed in the us here imported from Germany after the service; what a car, always wanted to drive/ or own an evo 1 or 2
Yes, I think you did a great job with this clip. I must say, though, you are great at what you do. I am looking forward to your next project.
One of my favorite AMG-Mercedes!
Really great video of this awesome car
lovely car - great post
Amazing car and a really cool video..thank you
"1980s visibility" - not heard that before, but makes great sense. Good channel, this one! 👍
It's true though. None of those pesky life saving pillars getting in the way lol.
Got to be one of the best sounding four bangers out there.
My absolute dream car, I want to park it in my driveway and just look at it. Unfortunately that's the reason they are so rare nowadays, people lock them up with their collections and never drive them. I mean how can you blame them, it's automotive perfection at its finest.
They just gotta drive it man
Friend of mine (Cosworth Phil) used to have an RS 500 Cosworth. He had the option to buy either his Sierra, BMW M3 E30, and the Cosworth 190E.
Make matters worst he sold the car to Ford at Dartford a year or so later for the same price he’d paid for the car new. Probably worth over 100k now.
Great video James
Love those old mercs classic styling unique 👌😎💪
If I bought this thing, first thing is a visit to the exhaust shop and remove one of the mufflers on that system and just enjoy the sound. Give the people what they want...!
I had all so a amg power pack 25,000 DM for the upgrade that time😍😍 245 km on 4 gear to the 5 gear and than a full gear to go and back shifts its spitting fire
like your work, keep it up
What a car!!
More of this, please!
Very cool and beautiful car ☺
ooh yes, what a beast .. keep toying with trying to find a nice 190 .. you may have just inspired me
Good luck in the hunt!
Been a while since I saw one of these..... and the guy that owned it, well, no idea what modifications he had done but the end result was a premature death 😡😡. Glad to see one that survived. Thanks 👍
You’ve got yourself a classic review right there! Type of video you can come back to. A legendary DTM special screaming down on British back roads. Couldn’t do wrong with it really.
It was most enjoyable to film, and to edit. One of my favourite videos to date.
Seriously exotic car that.
Superb 😎
I am far from being a Merc fan, but this thing is one of my all time favourite cars. Fast enough, but not so fast that it's boring at any legal speed (my biggest complaint about my current car, yes that makes me spoiled) and it's got just the right amount of frilly bits to tell you what it is without being quite as OTT as the Evo II.
Have to comment on one other thing- "I've knackered my driving shoes" tells you that you're in the right job ☺
Beautiful specimen.
That exhaust is phenomenal, and not just for being lightweight. Y merge right after the headers, where it makes most sense, then what looks to be "gruppe A" 65mm single pipe rest of the way. Sounds just right, not obnoxious, and for that might even get a slap on the wrist pass in countries that demand E/EC mark and papers.
Love this car
thanks for this video. there are not much of 190e review.
Love that Steve McQueen shirt, James (video's the usual great too!)
Fabulous 👍
what a monster
I always preferred the 190E Cosworth to the E30 M3 as a kid, even though the M3 was quicker and my opinion hasn't changed, this car is awesome IMO.
Both cool but M3 all day long
@@2702simmo I preferred the E28 M5 to the M3, I like 4 door saloons so the E30 325i was my choice of that range.
Another great review. Love seeing your take on these classics. Also be interested to see your take on a 140i
I've done 140i reviews
@@JayEmmOnCars off to that video I go
One of my faveour cars O.A.T, absolut iconic
Martin Brundle, the former Formula One driver, said that this car had one of the best chassis ever fitted to a four-door saloon.
Thank you for this
The denied it when James May phoned him up 😂
JayEmm brought me here lol.
What a car. Talk about a car being more than the sum of its parts...though that sum is substantial in this case.
Designed before the computers that simulate vehicular aerodynamics were designed! Which is why it looks awesome. No natural inclination to trend towards a wedge shape. They had testing tunnels for aerodynamics back then, sure, but the car design process these days has caused a homogenization of design, to some extent. The natural progression of the evolution of design for aerodynamics has taken us to the wEDGE (and back a bit, you could argue too)!
I guess it might not be the fault of the design process and more an increased status of importance being bestowed by manufacturers on speed and performance, and thus aerodynamics as a factor of achieving required performance levels.
Not all manufacturers, mind, but some have gone all wedgy. Some more than others, too...
That's my contribution. Thanks for sharing the video. Was great to see this classic being driven as it was intended - with its awesome 'soundtrack' - rather than just ogling it stationary. I really appreciated that. 👍
Hi james, big follower since the last few months of your channel. I really love your videos and there are quite a few id thought to comment on(like the 4.8is one where the limpmode was on...). Well the brakes are actually rated quite good...being 4 pot calipers and such...mabe rubbers and brakepads didnt give you a good idea. Btw if you ever decide to come to germany for a test, we could organise a ride in some of amgs premerger w201s with 2.6(@185hp) to 3.6-12(@250hp) or even a 3.6-24v or 5.5 m113 one. This said, about the cars...w201 has quite a community.
Nice!!!
Great car
These and the B18c5 and K20 are the best sounding I4 engines ever.
I'm an e30 guy... The m3 for me is my favourite but is now a lottery win due to the way the prices have just gone crazy lol. That said, the 190 cosworth is a close second definitely.! I think one of the greatest cars ever made personally. Someone else touched on this in the comments, the e30 m3, these and the audi s1 quattro, special machines. You definitely need to get an e30 m3 on the channel now mate and see how it feels....
I can't afford one now sadly. Prices have gone insane. But I have built myself a v8 e30 2 door for fun 😁
Great change from four weeks of lockdown decorating 🙄 Thanks for the prompt
The 2.5-16v was the mark two 190e evo. The first was the 2.3-16v 190e evo. An if I remember rightly their was another reworking of the version 2 with a bigger build kit and more power.
Still a beautiful car tho and fast.
The best Sport Sedan Mercedes with the 500E W124
Wow amazing car mate I envy you
James please do a homologation series, e.g Celica Gt4 Carlos sainz, cosworths etc
Very cool, I don’t think these AMG fettled cars came to America? We got the Cosworth cars, and only very few....just LOVE these cars, always have!
Best of Evo2
I had a brand new Isuzu I-Mark Turboin 1987, and man, that thing was quick. The thing at the time was the 5.0 liter mustang, and thus little car always smoked them off the line.
As an American, I don’t feel it’s a proper car program unless the host is English. Thank you!
I quite agree
yeah Bro ,,, you one lucky guy
It would nice if you did some standing close ups of the cars man, most of us are car enthusiasts and your videos are cool just, lack of visual details of the cars featured, otherwise the rest is gold mate
Someone please let Jay review a proper AMG Hammer. And then let me come too lol.
Love these, the sound is intoxicating, and the way it looks. Park this next to most modern cars, I'm looking at this.
Jack The Hat Well, those are REALLY special, hard to find, and even more someone to borrow it from. Regardless, I'd also like to see it on the channel.
@@apexseal2811 yep I don't think there are many around sadly. I've only read about them in a book I used to have. Picture was of it going sideways. Epic machines.
Looked at this car similar this but was a 2.5 cosworth, the other week. can’t believe I could have got a minter for a £1500 in 2003. This is a beauty if only I knew now that they would be a classic high return on sale. I could have that a mint Bmw e30 M30 for £5000
My brother in-laws used to have a replica when I was young boy that's the only reason I actually knew about them
My father, who's eighty, had one of these. He owned well over fifty cars in his life excluding race cars, and he told me that the 190E was the best car he had. He did own a lot of Alfas so perhaps has low standards.
Absolutely dream car material this is!
P.s. apparently 1 A-class AMG owner watched that video...
a very handsome car, exactly what a merc should be like
Great video and ohh what an 'old skool' DTM classic: absolutely don't make em like this anymore...as they say proper German over engineering at its simplicity best!! Thanks for sharing.. Any Chance of an Evolution 2........please.
Great review, just one fault you made with this one, its the induction noice thats important with this AMG, not the exhaust.
God these are good
I actually like this one a lot more than the Evo II's bizzare aero. I know it's for aerodynamics reason but I just love the subtler look on Evo I more.
God that thing is gorgeous...
Love your content Jay and anything Motorsport or group B inspired is fine with me. Talking of S2000s, what about an NSX next? (Just not an auto). Happy Xmas!
I've driven the first gen NSX
I see you've done the nsx already. And a 300bjp MR2! GENIUS 👍🏼
i've got a 2.3 16v cosworth with itbs
10:00 well if you think the race version did close to 10,000rpm then 7500 will indeed leave it with the feeling of more to give
Great car I love these , though I wish you would have given more details on the engine like torque and BHP stuff like that
BHP is mentioned in the video I think?
JayEmm on Cars you only mention the added BHP through modifications and the £15,000 extra for 30bhp mate
@@medievilassassin standard car is 204 bhp
Missing the AMG Pack exhaust (Vital component of the AMG Pack), so it may not be an AMG Pack car. The AMG sparkplug cover was fairly easy to obtain back in the day, so documentation would be important to determine its authenticity. Even then, hopefully the factory AMG exhaust was preserved, so it can be re-installed! Otherwise, it looks like a VERY clean Evo 1.
It's definitely a power pack car, with the documentation to support
That would be terrific! How about the original exhaust?
@@AutobahnVault Long gone unfortunately.
@@JayEmmOnCars Regardless, awesome Evo 1. A true childhood hero.
Original AMG PP build docs present confirming engine/vin number build dates etc Titanium exhaust is a work of art, quiet at idle and unobtrusive on a cruise with no boom at any part of the rev range but sounds wonderful when extended.Whoever did this exhaust really knew what they were doing..
Yea, I hope someone offers a E30 M3. But you should do a E36 M3 Evo (3.2) aswell.
Its 'pure class'...😊💯👍✅👌🆒️
really wish you demonstrated the II
Have you got one?
Apparently Martin Brundle himself said that this is the finest rear drive chassis saloon ever made!!!!!!!! Well, that's what James May said at least (I know its not actually the same model, but I don't care)
