Their album Urban Hymns was huge when it came out in 1997 . I was 18 years old then and I still listen to it today
Ditto.
We all do!
Same. That album, along with OCS added to the whole scene back then, with Oasis, Pulp, Blur. The whole lot. Loved those days.
Great UK band. Watch Lucky Man as well.
Yes!! Definitely react to Lucky Man. Good call 👍
and sonnet
Lucky Man by The Verve next. Their Urban Hymns album is all killer no filler.
Richard Ashcroft's "A Song For The Lovers" . One of my favourites ever.
Mine too!!
This song is widely regarded as having a double meaning, referring to both Richard Ashcroft's struggles with drugs, and his dad's battle against cancer and the effects of chemotherapy
Yeah his dad was complaining drugs don’t work
Drugs worked for me until I had no control over my life anymore. I was facing some serious consequences and decided to try recovery. I am very lucky that it worked the very 1st time I actually made an effort. Later this year,I will have 28 years of sobriety. No drugs, no alcohol and a year after that clean date, I stopped smoking as well!
Congrats, that's huge ❤
Right on! I've been without alcohol 4.5 years 👍
Congrats!! I’m glad you made it.
So glad I live through the 90s in the UK, was rife with wall to wall classics like this, don’t think there’s quite been a decade like it..❤❤
Got to listen to History. Noel Gallagher said it’s the one song he wished he wrote. Classic
I love that song
Great song! and it has a mind games sample 😎👌
My understanding of this back in the day was that it was about someone dying of cancer and the 'drugs don't work' anymore. Lots of ways to interpret this song on a personal level.
Classic 90s! Agree with the "Lucky Man" suggestion for the next one to react to by the Verve. Having enjoyed "Bittersweet Symphony" you should definitely check out the video for the orchestral "Unfinished Sympathy" by Massive Attack which has multiple parallels but importantly is an earlier song. Massive Attack have multiple classics including the ethereal "Teardrop" with its unique and oddly compelling video and the atmospheric "Angel". I bet one of you will say I've heard this somewhere!
To quote Half Baked, "I don't do drugs, just weed".
Great reaction, its about his Father dying of cancer. And its about the drugs treating the cancer not working, not recreational drugs. The Verve/Richard Ashcroft so underrated. Lucky Man, History, Rolling People, Sonnet, This Thing Called Life
The saddest, most heart-breaking, beautiful song ever written. It's a masterpiece. Great reaction.
i listened to this a lot when my nephew passed away! the whole album was fantastic!
I dont know that ive ever clicked a video faster. When i first got their album Urban Hymns, this was the song that stood out the most for me, and i still love it!
The Stone Roses are my favorite band of that time period, but Pulp deserves more recognition as well as Doves. And the drugs worked until they didn't
This whole album by the verve is an absolute vibe (urban hymns)
Got a few chilled out ones for you to check from the 2nd wave
Oasis - Cast no Shadow (dedicated to Richard Ashcroft of the verve)
The Verve - Lucky Man
Blur - Tender
That‘s my Favorit the verve Song ❤
Lucky man is their best song imo
I remember The Verve's version, but I really love Ben Harper's version from the Live on Mars album. Really good stuff
The verve means vigir and spirit, or enthusiasm. And yes you guys gave changed. The wall is the proof. That wouldn't be there if you guys weren't great. I don't care what anyone says, this channel is family and it's like hanging out with friends on a back porch or around a fire pit just shooting the sh%t.
Same band did bitter sweet symphony that ren covered. One of my all time favourite songs this. Seen the verve several times love to. ❤
Been a long while since I've heard The Verve... they were very big when I was at uni, long while back now. You should check out one of Richard Ashcroft's solo songs, Check the Meaning, quite a haunting song and video
The Verve is sick and underrated imo.
There's some great songs on their previous albums too. On your own is a personal favourite.
YES!!!!!!!!!!
When I hear the line “if you want a show” reminds me of my friend who was addicted to drugs having a good night but by 1-2am he would show us the violent side of himself but it wasn’t really him just him not realising where he was or who he was talking too. So it was like he put on a show for us. I still miss him RIP Goughy.
Check out Velvet Morning by these. Fantastic song!
From one of my favourite ever albums.
There from my home town wigan 🏴 😊
Sonnet by the verve needs a trash talkers review.
Lucky man would have to be next, and for me Ashcrofts song for the lovers 👌🏼
I'm from the same town as The Verve and there's posters all over Wigan advertising Richard Ashcrofts (their lead singer) solo tour and I'm convinced that Murdoch from Gorillaz is based on him because they just look too much alike
In terms of the British bands "blowing up" in the UK, compared to the US, the UK was probably about an album ahead for Oasis and two ahead for Blur (Oasis got popular pretty quickly from the start, while Blur's third album Parklife was the one that made them huge in the UK). For the Verve, the time frame was much closer because Urban Hymns was their comeback album after their first split and their reputation and popularity grew during their absence.
You Need LUCKY MAN as your Next Verve Reaction! #flawless
There's two verve tunes I'd love to see you guys react to. Not sure either were singles in the US muchless but lucky man or come on. The latter is something I think you guys will love. Peace ✌🏼 ⚒️
Worthwhile to listen to the cover of this track by Ben Harper... one of those covers that (in my opinion) is better than the original. Check out the version from the Live from Mars album. Definitely worth the listen.
Compared to the first and 3rd albums, Richard Ashcroft must have sold his soul to come up with Urban Hymns. Not a bad track on it, zero filler
Love the verve. Right you 2 I've commented 1000 times get listening to some aphex twin please please. Come to daddy by them good place to start😊
I interpreted this one as losing someone to cancer as eventually the painkillers to keep them comfortable eventually stop working an degrade the person more.
verve - lucky man
I think I lean a little more towards Blur just because Damon Albarn is a beautiful man 😍 not necessarily about the music lol. But also, you guys have never heard the Libertines, although they were a bit later (early 2000s). They never got much recognition in the US but I love that band!
Imitrex definitely works for me! When you’ve had a migraine for 3 days and nothing else is working, it’s such a relief.
My life has changed a lot in the past 5 years. I got a new job, started making more money, moved into my apartment, got a new car, stopped talking to my best friend (that part isn’t so good, but it’s the path she chose and I can’t change it.) And I met my Boo Boo, who has definitely changed my life 🥰
very deep
This was written about his childhood and his life , the title is the last words his dad said before he died "the drugs dont work "
Y'all ain't wrong about the meds for pain... been doin' that song & dance since 2002😞
Morning guys! This song hits me hard. Because in my drug days I never thought I'd be able to quit, pills or hard stuff. And I managed to get out. Out of both and never thought I could. I got lucky and was able to up and leave my old stomping grounds and come back to my other place I used to use 20+ years ago and no one's around that I used to know. And now I'm in school to help others to get away from that stuff! I feel grateful to be here today and really shouldn't be..thankfully I am and can share my experience with others...❤️ Ya guys!
Ok, here's a '90s jam y'all have to check out:: "X-French Tee Shirt" by Shudder To Think.
Tune 👌
This was the verve’s 3rd album , and very commercial compared to the first two , tracks like slide away , she’s a superstar, history and on your own are all absolutely incredible, if you liked this I’d recommend history for sure
Fear Factory!!!! Powershifter!!!!
Blur fan here, you should totally react to their song Beetlebum!
The drugs do work, until they don't. That includes prescription drugs. They are temporary solutions most people try to use for long term problems.
Check out the CASISDEAD version of this. It’s from the perspective of the drug dealer, turned into the user. Plus it’s rap, if you’ve never heard of him. Dope UK artist.
Nice, i recommend "Sonnet" or "Lucky man", by the way smoke dog is an enciclopedy fuck common university, you rock guys 🥳
As well as Blur, Oasis and the Verve - Pulp, Suede, and the Stone Roses fell in that timeline
yall should react to no scrubs - TLC
I'm sure yall heard it b4 but i just wanna know ur opinions!!
To me this song exemplifies the era in which it was made. At this point I think it could be argued that in some senses the cultural/musical landscape was going through a sort of second-wave of ec***sy.
And whereas the first wave, around Rave music and culture, had a very positive vibe, the second wave, with more questions about quality of substance and a lot of bad comedowns, required a song like this perhaps, which Richard and the band seemed to provide effortlessly, and with care.
Obviously I could be wrong, and maybe there were other cultural/spiritual/personal factors involved in the song, but that's my take on it.
smokey high af
Sonnet
Now react to CASISDEAD - Drugs, one of the lesser known goated UK rappers tribute to this song.
Have you guys listened to Manic Street Preachers?
React to some , catfish and the bottlemen tracks
Bittersweet sympathy is the same music as the Rolling Stones the last time, they used a classical version of it, look into it
I like Coldplay the best.
I might have read that this song is about his father dying of cancer.
I'm like Willing, Nelson, Snoop Dog, and Wiz khalifa. 😊 🌱🌲🍃😁💨
While your on a Brit pop could you check out one of the original bands. Stone Roses, i am the resurrection
The drugs you talked about work everytime.
The drugs that don't work are the ones you give your father for his terminal cancer.
oasis
I am begging you to do more Badflower! Family would be preferable but Move Me and the acoustic version of Ghost are also great.
Future Leaders of the World have s song called Spotlight that hits hard. Parts of the guy’s voice reminds me of Kurt Cobain.
I love his voice....song...not so much.
