Nathan. At the end you mentioned how good the drums sure. I don't know how much Zeppelin you've listened to so far or learned about them, but if you haven't listened to much Zep, listen to all the albums . The drummer, John 'Bonzo' Bonham is considered one of the best drummers of all times. Studios have copied his drum sound for decades.

Stairway was published in 1971 and Bohemian in 1975. So it would have been the other way round.
Anyway, the history of rock is a great continuum of master songs : 1971 Stairway, 1973 Confortably Numb, 1975 Bohemian, 1976 Hotel California, 1978 Sultans of Swing… and on and on and on… to name only a very, very few.

"Stairway To Heaven" is itself structured like a stairway to heaven, step by step, building to the heaven of that guitar solo, those drum fills, and lyrics voicing ancient truths -- "When all are one and one is all, To be a rock and not to roll" ... John Bonham, their drummer, passed in 1980. The surviving members of Led Zeppelin received the Kennedy Center Honors from President Obama back in 2012. They sat in an upper tier booth wearing rainbow colored accolades adorned with presidential medals along side the Obamas while presenters elaborated on impacts their music made in people's lives. The presentation was capped off with a performance of "Stairway to Heaven" lead by Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart, that featured a gospel choir and drumming by Jason Bonham, son of the late John Bonham. Check CZcams for clips. It's really cool.

Love to see the younger generation appreciate the older generation music. Although I am biased, the late 60’s and 70’s had amazing music.

    The best RocknRoll band ever!
I was a teenage girl listening to them & my Momma tried hard to get me not to like them. She said a nice girl shouldn't be listening to a band like this. I said "Momma I'm sorry to disappoint you but I gotta listen to them, I love them"! 😂❤
I'm an old girl now & still listening!

Jimmy's own words from recorded interviews. If he told you something different then he's telling different stories to different people. BTW, there are many YT videos of them rehearsing Stairway during its construction.

This is a song that was so popular that for about thirty? fourty? years it was a nerve-grinding cliche for someone to play, since everyone with even a basic guitar knowledge just had to pick it up. There's a gag based on that in Wayne's World, where a guitar store has a sign up that just says "NO STAIRWAY"

    • @Prone2Thrill

LOL my dad had the misfortune of working at a guitar store in a mall way back and every hack in the place came in a butchered that song in particular. Dad would cringe so hard!

most definitely the most perfect song in rock history. F-IMO, it just IS. it's also how i describe the blueprint for how to get people into heavier, harder music...start them out the way this song starts, with something catchy and even pretty, then little by little add layers until the time is right to blow the gddamn lid off--but be able to deliver when that time comes.
