Fun Fact: The actor for Wedge Antilles, Denis Lawson, is the uncle of Ewan McGregor, who played Obi wan in the prequels.
@@victoriousmaximus1869 Thankfully Lawson eventually came around. Not only did he have a cameo in "Rise of Skywalker," but he also voiced Wedge again in Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron II.
You can watch them work together in the darkly intriguing movie 'Perfect Sense'.
@@victoriousmaximus1869 you mean don't try it
Did you realise that Yularen is in this movie
With the same appearance that he has in Rebels.
The guy beside the guy who got chocked is Yularen. The guy beside him wearing white is Yularen. *Here:* 4:27
*Yularen and Tarkin both died then the death star exploded*
I checked to make sure someone noted this.
Rest In Peace, Yularen. He was there to fight by Anakin through the Clone Wars to the Civil War.
The Steve Show Yeah rip.
@@BM-bt6rq And he almost made it through too, if it weren't for those pesky Jedi farm boys...
RIP..yeah I didnt initially see it
Fun fact: the bloke who plays wedge is Ewan McGregors uncle
Yep.Dennis Lawson. And he advised his nephew to avoid playing in any SW movie...! Luckily for us Ewan didn't listen to him!
@@olgak.1139
Yeah, glad he didn't listen to him, Ewan turned obi-wan into a great character, in ROTS he was amazing.
No shit? That’s awesome!
David N 22 nice.

4:24 Peter Coushing, who played Tarkin, was a really prolific actor. For some reason, he played a lot of vampire hunters with the vampires played by Christopher Lee, who played count dooku in the prequels.
lazymansload He was known for playing bad guys
Master Yoda that too, though he could play a wide range of characters. I once saw him play an absent-minded Professor alongside Doug McClure in Journey to the Center of the Earth
He also wore whatever he wanted to set especially when he was only being filmed from the waist up. Like he would wear slippers or pj's
Daedalus yeah the slippers were because he wore, i think like size 14 shoes or some ridiculously big size, and they couldn’t get boots in his size.
@@lazymansload520 And, of course, the cinematic Dr. Who, as well as Sherlock Holmes in "Hound of the Baskervilles".

God, I absolutely LOVE your reaction trough it all. It's a story to behold, that's for sure.
Seeing you recognize characters like Wedge, Tarkin and all those guys even before they are introduced, or you only hear their names, It's amazing, really.
The way you reacted to Tarkin's death for instance was pretty neat. It came as a surprise and a shock.
I am looking forward to seeing your reaction to Episode 5 and 6.
I love seeing your reaction as someone who has seen all of Rebels, TCW, the prequels, Rogue One, Solo, and Fallen Order before this. All the callbacks those stories did originated from here (and the rest of the OT).
Defiintely a VERY interesting reaction to see someone watch the OT and having seen everything chronologically before. I think ESB and ROTJ will be VERY interesting to see for her.
I mean... George didn't even know what a "Clone War" was in 1977. It just sounded neat :D
It could also have been a homage to his first film THX-1138
I think he said in an interview he had written a rough sketch for the timeline before this. Lucas always likes to begin the story in the middle, because "beginnings are boring." In fact I think it was released in a magazine or something like that the story of the republic into the Empire back in the late '70's. If you watch The Clone Wars, which Lucas had enormous control over, a large portion of the episodes will open in some form of action or battle in progress.
@@ClassicalMusic2002 IIRC, the rough idea of how the peaceful Republic was corrupted and turned into the Empire is explained in the novelization of A New Hope. Palpatine is even name dropped but at that stage he was merely a puppet ruler under the control of Governors and military officials like Tarkin. Lucas had many themes and ideas in his head but he constantly reworked his ideas.
Fun little detail at 4:25 within the Empire meeting the man wearing the white uniform is Wullf Yularen a Colonel in the Imperial Security Bureau (ISB) the same Bureau Agent Kallus was apart of. you may better know him as Admiral Yularen from the Clone Wars who served on General Skywalker’s Star Destroyer. In a Season 7 episode where Ashoka and the two twins leave on there ship which gets into the path of a Star Destroyer you could see an older Yularen telling Anakin “should we sent someone to arrest them” something along these lines. Unfortunately he died in the Death Star explosion along with the other members in that room.
Vader choking that guy in the meeting was actually the first instance of the Force's power being shown. That displayed it wasn't just a spiritual philosophy, but something that could be used.
"I find your lack of faith disturbing." One of my favorite Vader lines.
I like how you know the name of Tarkin, Wedge, Biggs, the trandoshans, etc. without had seen the movies!
That's what happens when your first intro to Star Wars is the Clone Wars cartoon. I loved how when the Death Star blew up, her first reaction was: "Tarkin died?!"
I can’t believe you haven’t seen this before, your reactions are gold tho, so it makes sense
Back when he wrote this, even George Lucas didn't know Vader was Anakin Skywalker or that Leia was Luke's brother.
Actually he did, he just didn't made the decision to set in stone yet until the next movie. Lucas had many things written down even back then, like the Siths and even Mace Windu's name were in some of his early drafts.
@@phenompy
Eh, no. He totally did not. In this film, Darth is actually his name, and not some Sith title, as you can clearly tell from his and bi-Wan's conversation. And Luke was always going to have a sister, but it wasn't supposed to be Leia. That came about because after Return Of The Jedi, Lucas was tired of Star Wars, and wanted to tie up every loose end, instead of making the original version of Episode VII, wherein Luke abandons the Rebellion to go look for his pirate queen sister in the Outer Rim.
@@Carabas72 He explicitly said it in an introduction to the 25th anniversary edition of the novelization of A New Hope. "When I wrote the original Star Wars screenplay," "I knew that Darth Vader was Luke Skywalker's father; the audience did not. I always felt that this revelation, when and if I got the chance to make it, would be shocking, but I never expected the level of emotional attachment that audiences had developed for Luke."
@@phenompy
Lucas has a very creative interpretation of the past. He's also been caught trying to insert mentions of midichlorians into old interviews of his from the 70s.
@@Carabas72 I'm sorry but I rather believe what the author has to say over than just think he's lying for the sake of assumption.
Also there's footage of Vader being referred as "sith lord" in a deleted scene of a New Hope /watch?v=8Erf6s_wYJk
"Here's where the fun begins... WHAT THE F!!!" Gaxelle 2020
Peter Cushing (Tarkin) I cant say enough good things about, and neither could the cast and crew, the guy was very funny, classy, and an all around British gentleman. He and Christopher Lee (Count Dooku) were great friends for decades having done the 1950's Hammer horror Dracula films for many years.
Tarkin was the first villain as a kid that i really hated, but years later I did research into a lot of the actors on the cast for Star Wars and it shocked me to find out when I was 13 that msot of the actors who played badguys were as far away from their characters as you could get.
About the only one that didnt have as much enthusiasm for the material was, ironically, Alec Guinness (Obi-Wan). He didn't particularly like Star Wars but he was never really mean-spirited about it. And he did have some fun moments on set especially with Mark Hamill between scenes, and Mark Hamill has some of the msot enthusiasm for his role even to this day. And Hamill usually has the funniest behind the scenes stories.
Apparently Carrie Fisher found it difficult to act with Cushing because he was a gentleman around her.
There’s a bloopers video you should see on CZcams, as well as the fact he would wear slippers during the movie
Some rebels do wear hard armor, but typically just their frontline combat soldiers. The guys we see here are supposed to look like security guards for a diplomat's ship.
The bartender at the cantina’s family was murdered by droids during the clone wars and that’s why he didn’t let any in.
Wow, is this canon or Legends?
Before the prequels were made I just figured that the people in the cantina were having meetings that they didn't want recorded, and droids can be very effective spies/recording devices.
@@caiostocco Could be canon, from a certain point of view
Yeah, but I ask if it was made before or after the Disney era
It’s from a Certain Point of View so it’s canon.
Leia just lost her family and entire planet and she still comforts Luke. What a queen.
Seriously though, unlike her father
"Schoot him with your feelings"
"Ok"
i literally died laughing when she said "Use your feelings" lol
I always wanted to see the reactions and thoughts of someone watching Star Wars in the in-universe chronology rather than real-world one, so thanks for that! I can't wait to see your reaction to The Empire Strikes Back, one of the best movies in the entire series.
I didn’t think that the climax of this movie could get any more awesome but after watching EVERYTHING leading up to this I can proudly say ‘I was so wrong’.
Love this! Very interesting to see a reaction from somebody with an extensive knowledge of this world. A joy to watch.
It's fascinating watching your reaction considering you're already familiar with all the backstory, unlike us old people that watched the original trilogy first. I think it speaks to the depth of George Lucas' story that even watching the movies in a different order is still deeply satisfying, just "from a certain point of view" to quote someone in a later movie. :) :)
It's so wholesome to see all these genuine reactions. You're what the Star Wars fandom needs right now.
Can't wait for your reaction to Empire Strikes Back, it's gonna get wild!
“Don’t be mean to Chewie!” Haha that was funny lol
Also if you think about it, Leia inherited characteristic traits of her father Anakin/Vader: inpatient, easily irritable to the point of flaring with anger, but very devoted leaders towards their respective causes (even to the point of seeing what’s wrong with them)
Yes ! I did notice that.
It's a trip seeing someone watch A New Hope for the first time, but already knowing who most of the characters are.
The bartender (Wuher) who wouldn’t allow droids in the Cantina actually has a justified reason, during the Clone Wars Separatist battle droids killed his parents when he was young.
It's a reason, not a justified reason. He's being prejudiced against all droids just cause of battle droids that have long been destroyed.
But to me it does make sense.
@@treygoldsworthy1402 Yes. It makes sense. I am simply commenting on how you said that he has a "justified" reason. He has a reason, and it makes sense, but that doesn't make it "justified" by any sense.
And the droids don't drink
@@0axis771 Why would droids be in there? They can't eat and drink.
These reactions are always interesting because the entry point for the Star Wars universe has changed so dramatically over the last 20 years or so. It used to be that the original trilogy was more or less the sole gateway. Now there's the prequels, sequels, Clone Wars, Rebels, Mandalorian, etc that all provide additional context to the OT that change the perception.
"When the Death Star was destroyed, about half of the 501st Legion was still in the hangar getting to their ships. Of those who made it out, another third were caught in the explosion. I'd fought with some of those men for over twenty years. Afterwards, those of us that survived hooked up with a nearby Imperial fleet making a retaliatory strike on the Rebel's base on Yavin IV. It wasn't the best thought out plan, but we were cut off from our leaders, tired, and operating on instinct. If not for our training, we probably would've never gotten past their orbital defenses."
Excerpt from 501st Journal, circa 0ABY
Oh my goodness, this is so delightful. I am 100% here for this reaction series.
I've seen people react to Star Wars in (I thought) just about every watch order. I'd seen chronological, I'd seen episode order, I've even seen a few react to machete order. But it's SO COOL to see someone who is 100% up on the lore of the universe who's never actually seen the movies the whole universe is about. Literally nobody points out "that's an Ithorian" in the cantina sequence. It's a whole different kind of informed viewership and I am digging it. Subscribed!
When the death star blows up, admiral yularen from the clone wars is also killed. You can see him in the meeting scene at the table with the other imperial officers. He has the white mustache.
In Star Wars lore, blasters fire plasma bolts that are powerful enough to punch through most forms of physical armor and personal energy shields are extremely expensive and rare. The armor that Stormtroopers wear is supposed to protect them from ballistic damage but are specially insulated to absorb blaster bolts and improve the chance of the wearer surviving, though they will at the very least be knocked unconscious. It's not too different to the armor that our troops wear in the field, except that Stormtrooper armor is much less flexible.
Lightsabers almost always cauterize any wounds they inflict instantly. However it is not unheard of for some wounds to not do so and bleed, such as when Obi-Wan "disarmed" the Ponda Baba in the Mos Eisley cantina.
Luke used the Force to guide the torpedos down into the shaft. It also allowed them to avoid hitting the walls of the shaft before they hit the reactor and therefore explode prematurely.
P.S. Yes, I am a nerd, and damn proud of it!
In Star Wars movies on the other hand, Stormtrooper armour offers about as much protection as a red t-shirt.
Actually I believee the retconned reason for the bleeding is that his species has blood that does not cauterise
@@Mr_Hoppykwins
What is the retconned reason for the arm looking nothing like Ponda Baba's arm?
This was so great to watch! I absolutely loved this. I've never seen someone watch the originals with pre knowledge of the background material. It was interesting seeing you connect the dots like this!
Yularen was also aboard the Death Star, from Rebels (and Clone Wars) in his white suit. He was at the meeting scene too. He died on the Death Star sadly, and also Bail Organa sadly died on Alderaan.
1:35
If they updated the dialogue for todays Star War Movies they would probably have Vader say something like: “B.S! I literally saw your ship at Scariff 10 1/2 minutes ago. Take her away!”
I think it was a few days
Gold Leader AKA Dutch was in the episode "Secret Cargo" in Rebels. He was also in the final space battle in Rogue One. Little fun fact.
14:27 The proton torpedoes "turned" because of the gravitational field in the Death Star, during the mission briefing you can see the simulation showing it, some people think it was Luke using the force but the only thing Luke accomplished with the force in that scene was getting a feeling on when to shoot, the targeting computer wasn't 100% accurate, shoot too soon and the torpedoes would catch up with the gravitational pull and thus hit the surface, shoot too late and they wouldn't reach the optimal angle to turn in time which would result in them hitting the surface as well.
This also explains how the star fighters would crash onto the Death Star despite being on space, the station is still built on the same principle as a planet so it requires an artificial gravity field, any objects that are close enough to it would be pulled to it.
Wow very interesting, thanks for explaining that.
That makes a lot of sense. I love learning in-universe explanations for things that aren't fully explained in the movies themselves.
@@y3ldarb2 At the start of the battle you can hear Red Leader warning the other pilots when they are entering onto the magnetic field as well.
"Didn't go in."
"That's what she said." I'm rollin! 😂
They came from behind!
Will you be able to pull out in time!
Carrie Fisher spent a lot of time in England when she was younger and a bit of an accent slipped in when she was angry, which is why she sounds a bit different while talking to Tarkin. This was retconned in Canon as Leia mocking him. Another retcon is the inclusion of Iden Versio from Battlefront 2 as one of the TIE pilots in the dogfight over the Death Star.
It is amazing getting to see someone watch this movie for the first time AFTER having watched the prequels and other stuff. Thank you!
That bar Han and Chewie were in is the same one Ventress met Bossk and the other bounty hunters
"Now you wanna hug the carpet!" hahahaha too funny!
Well at least Chewie received his medal in the last movie.... Well deserved long ago. ;)
I don’t think I’ve seen a first time viewer that was already so entrenched in the Star Wars lore. Very interesting reaction video
Thank you for this video. I always love sharing my passions with new people, but getting to see you react to a classic with all the backstory and characters that the prequels and tv series set up was a unique experience. Great to see how the uninitiated respond to Star Wars chronologically.
The two Ben kills in the cantina were the same two Cassian and Jyn bumped into on Jedha in Rogue One.
I heard, "that's what she said" and I giggled, thank you for that haha
Love your respectful attitude and genuine reactions! Thanks!
Tarkin is played by Peter Cushing. He and Christopher Lee, who played Count Dooku, were in a lot of movies together. The Hammer Frankenstein and Dracula films are probably their most famous. HORROR EXPRESS is one of my favorites.
Also did you like to see Jan Dodonna in his first appearance? He was one of the Rebel Cell leaders in Rebels, and he was in Rogue One too although portrayed by a different actor of course.
🤔 I dont recall that character....sounds familiar

You mean Admiral Yularen? Yep, but he was kinda more loyal to the Chancellor/Emperor than he was to the Jedi, anyway. I dont feel bad for him sitting all superior at the Moff's table.

The costumes were indeed expensive. And so were all the extras wearing them. But they looked so much more real and believable than the CGI troopers later on.
I recall people who saw this in the theatre in 1977 telling me that when the Star Destroyer flew over the top of the screen at the beginning, other people in the audience screamed because they had never seen or been led to expect anything like that.

I first saw the original Star Wars in theater during it's '97 re-release, and then the subsequent two. So I had the experience the film was designed for, that is, as an entry point into this story and universe. Very interesting to see it viewed by someone who already knows the backstory.
I was 11 in the summer of 1977 we got to the theater 1.5 hours early. We were the second group in line for the first showing in Greenville SC. Totally blown away and been a fan ever since. Good review.
A reference of Han saying negative on the intercom is actually seen in clone wars when Fives is yelling negative over the intercom to general Krell when the clones are playing with the spaceships
Can't wait for Empire reaction. This films great, but Empire is a a whole nother level. Literally in my top 3 favorite films.
It's amazing that you had never seen this movie before but you know what an Ithorian is, what Cad Bane's species is, who Tarkin is, etc. So well-versed in SW but never seen the movie that started it all.
13:01 - "It didn't go in." "That's what she said." and 14:16 - "That's a little dirty."
You seem to have picked up on the subtext - Luke, flying in his X-chromosome shaped vessel down a long tunnel, seeks to shoot his payload into the female hole of the motherly womb-shaped space station causing a massive explosion/climax. Also the hole he is aiming at is described as "a small thermal exhaust port right below the main port." That's so dirty. And there was a line in the film from one of the other pilots: "Luke, will you be able to pull out in time?"
And not to mention the whole idea of the boy Luke growing up to become a man by confronting his own father in a battle of giant glowing phallic symbols...
George Lucas was one sick pup. LOL.
I have seen this movie hundreds upon hundreds of times and this was almost as entertaining seeing your expressions and your "what the F!?!?" 😂

_That's_ your takeaway?
It's amazing to see how good a job Lucas did over the subsequent decades to build this universe up to a point that you enjoyed episode 4 as much or more than I did in the theater in the late 1970s.
This is the first time I've seen a reaction to Star Wars from your perspective, and it was delightful to see how much the movie is supported and amplified by the prequel content.
You named so many of the aliens in the cantina that had no names when I saw the movie as a child. It's not fair that you got to enjoy this film with such a wealth of foreknowledge!
Nice to get the perspective of someone who already knows some of the story and background, so thanks for that Gaxelle!
However, I think you might underestimate the "power" of watching this movie as your intro to the Star Wars universe. All the impact of the surprises is diminished when you already know the Skywalker DNA...
"Shoot him with your feelings, Luke!" That line was worth the price of admission alone ROTFL!!!!!
he was in the desert of Tatooine for 19 years. He came at age 38 and left at age 57. Alec Guinness was 63
4:26 “Ok nerd” 🤣🤣🤣🤣 That killed me
"Would he be bleeding that much?"

Han Solo chasing the stormtroopers! Love it.
At the end when Luke returns from the battle, Mark accidentally called Carrie by her name and not "Leia" xD
Edit:
Peter Cushing was also proud of his role as Tarkin and was happy it was so well-received. He worked on Star Wars not long after his wife's death, which he had taken very hard. He got along very well with the rest of the cast and was one of the few to believe it would be a much-liked movie at the time. His only regret was that he couldn't reprise the role since Tarkin died.
