Yoda is intentionally behaving goofy to test Luke's patience, understanding, and how he treats others. That's why Yoda pulls a complete 180 behavior-wise when they get to his home.
Yes. That's how I always understood Yoda's initial goofiness-as a test of Luke's patience.
@@gufu21 And the thing is, he fails miserably at Yoda's test, showing just how far our whiney farmboy has to go in order to become a Jedi Knight.
Agreed. I always thought that as being obvious. This film has loads more depth than its given credit. It's a masterpiece
Chad K. Davis this is how I perceived it as well and why Yoda’s behaviour in TLJ where he acted silly seemed out of place to me.
@Adam 0202 *Ruin
Its so funny for you to catch references from the clone wars when for us it was the clone wars that was referencing these movies
That's what makes her reactions unique. She's like the only channel who's watching all of Star Wars the canon chronological order for first time!
@@dawarrior95 I would say that is the wrong way because you miss out on so much, but let's face it...almost everyone, even those who haven't seen a second of Star Wars know something about Vader being Luke's father.
"It's like poetry, it rhymes. Every stanza should rhyme with the last one. I don't know. Hopefully it'll work." - George Lucas
@@bromixsr I mean, we have evidence within this very channel that it actually works to watch things in chronological order, since you can still understand the interconnected references.
Exactly
On Luke holding his own against Vader: Vader isn't try to kill him and for most of the fight he's toying with him to gauge his strength. It's part of why he fights with only one hand for part of the fight. When Luke gets that lucky hit in on his shoulder Vader pretty much immediately lops his hand off because he's like "ok, enough of this!"
Vader does the same thing in VI, only it’s so Luke can be his apprentice
Darth Vader never tries lol he only tried when chopping Luke’s hand off . In return if Jedi he wasn’t trying either. He let Luke win so he wouldn’t have to kill him. If Vader fully tried as hard as he could , he could possibly overthrow palpatine but lots is still to be known.
@@sci4705 In terms of Lightsaber skill, Vader could _possibly_ take Palpatine, (even though Palpatine is lightning fast even if he isn't as skilled), but that's why Palpatine purposefully made Vader's suit vulnerable to Force Lightning. Vader is more than likely capable of using Force Lightning, he just can't use it because of his prosthetic limbs and respirator. The moment he uses it, it'd backfire and seize up his arms and likely damage his respirator. With this weakness, Palpatine always held a trump card over Vader.
The Unknown SCP You taught me some stuff I never thought of and I’ve seen these movies so many times.
@@TheMightyOdin Happy to inform :) The movies are great, but they don't even scratch the surface of what Jedi and Sith are capable of.
If you wanna know more, I recommend you look up the expanded Universe, otherwise known now as the Legends Continuity. It basically have many stories that are now non-canon thanks to Disney but they are some of my favourite Star Wars content.
I also recommend the CZcams channel "Jensaarai One", he makes versus videos where he goes in depth about the characters he analyses for the matches and comes to his own conclusions on who would win based on their feats and abilities, such as Yoda vs Darth Malak or Plo Koon vs Darth Vader. One of his I really recommend is Anakin Skywalker vs General Grievous.
They may be on the long side but worth it if you're interested, I know pretty much all I do form him alone. He also does descriptions on the 7 types of Lightsaber combat as well.
9:19: Technically, yes, Qui-gon had not yet been created when this film originally came out. That said, I don't really see the line from Obi-wan as being a contradiction. Yoda was basically the grandmaster Jedi, who played some part in the teaching of pretty much every living Jedi during the prequel era, including Obi-wan. So while Qui-gon was his actual master, Yoda was in some sense a master to all of them.
Besides, Yoda did teach the younglings
@@marcolechuga5292 And in Legends continuity, Obi-Wan was with the Younglings longer than he should have been, no one wanted to take him as a padawan until Qui-gon came along. So he spent more time with master Yoda than probably a lot of other Jedi do, at least that early in their training.
@@chrisallen9638 Now that's interesting, I also read from somewhere Ahsoka's situation was similar to that too. The Jedi didn't want to take her (probably because she was reckless and her emotions were unstable) that's why until her age of 14, she stayed as a youngling under Yoda which is a late age for a padawan. Then Yoda decided to give her to Anakin because he thought they were kinda similar and can connect to each other so Anakin would've learned to teach and also emotions like letting go. But I never knew Obi-Wan was a late padawan, I wonder why. He looks like a very loyal and wise Jedi since his padawan days, why they didn't choose him? Now I love Qui Gon even more.
@@basak9746 This is all based on memory from reading a wookieepedia article I read. I haven't gotten around to reading the book(s) in question myself, if I remember right it's the kids novel series, jedi apprentice or something that I think this came from. Anyway, my point is take my recollection with a grain of salt because I could be remembering a 2nd hand source incorrectly, but I think he didn't show an immediate strength and affinity with the Force. He was force sensitive, but he wasn't gifted in it at all. Which means the fact that Obi-Wan ended up becoming one of the greatest Jedi Knights of all time was 100% his own hard work and determination, guided by the steady, supportive hand of Qui-Gon Jinn.
@@basak9746 in the Canon Book "Master and Apprentice" Obi Wan was characterized as a Rebell against everything, and as a difficult Youngling. Thats why the Jedi Council choose that Obi-Wan become the New Padawan of Qui-Gon, because Qui Gon is a Rebel and disagree often with the decisions of the Jedi Council, too. And so in the beginning of the Book the relationship between Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon is very difficult, because Obi-Wan as a Rebell often disagree with Qui-Gon, and he became a Jedi who agrees often with the Jedi-Council, so he became the Obi-Wan we know.
Basically Yoda training Obi-Wan is when Yoda taught all the younglings, until they became Padawans and got personal masters, like Qui-Gon for Obi-Wan
Yeah, every single Jedi for many generations was taught by Yoda at some point or another.
Yes, this is true. But to completely answer her question, no, when they filmed this Qui-Gon didn't exist, but what they said in this doesn't say he couldn't have been Obi-Wan's master.
“For 800 years have I trained Jedi”
Also, didn't Yoda teach Obi-Wan about the living force during their exile? If so, nice point of view again.
That's right

"That guy" with Lando is Lobot. He has a cybernetic brain implant ala the one we saw on Tseebo in Rebels, which he uses to interface with the systems on Cloud City.
Because Lobot's brain is hooked directly up to the station compurers, Lando basically uses him like an Alexa for the whole city.
I love how she didn't even really give him a second thought but back in the 80s he became just as popular a character as Boba because that's just how SW was back then lol
The actor is also the lead character in George Lucas’ first film “THX-138”.

I always love how Obi-Wan says, “You will go to the Day-Go-Bah system” and Luke is like, “Degabuh System?”

That explains why we get the discounted Yoda in this movie. Luke was one planet off

You don't think daygobah and degobuh are similar? Come on. It's just their British and American accents. It's not like he said a completely different word.
When your boss is choked to death by Darth Vader, that equals instant promotion.
One step closer to death choke.
Piett was sure he should space himself when the Falcon escaped.
I bet that when Luke throws himself to the bottom of Bespin, Vader was like "yup, he is my son..." remembering Anakin from Clone Wars
The bounty hunters are not working together in this. Bossk has his own ship, and the Shadows Of The Empire comic book shows them competing to collect the bounty on Han Solo.
Looking forward to your Episode 6 reaction. 🙂
Yeah murderbears
Fun fact: The internal temperature of a tauntaun is lukewarm.
Its been 3 years since The Death Star blew up. Thats why their so much older. The original trilogy takes place over only 4 years.
Yeah, that's why Luke's climbed the ranks in the Rebel Alliance.
jmhaces was he a General in ROTJ or still just a Commander?
Lukes looks older than others becuase Mark Hamill was in a car accidentin which he fractured his nose and left cheekbone and needing plastic sirgury.
@@ApocalipsisEnSabah Well yes, but all three of them are older. But you are right Mark Hamill doesn't look so boyish anymore.
@@ApocalipsisEnSabah Mark also got bitten by a snake during filming on Dagobah..... the force may be with Luke but not with Mark Hamill.
Actually carbon freezing is extremely dangerous and can cause symptoms such as blindness to death depending on long they are frozen
I think it also depends on the carbon freezer. There are some designed to freeze living things and some that are not, this one was one that was not and was modified under Vaders orders.
Alpha2307 exactly, and it’s why he says “this facility is crude, but it should be adequate to freeze Skywalker...” in other settings, it’s not a lethal threat to put a living being into carbon freeze, as the one on Cloud City was only meant for supplies and such if I’m not mistaken
@@itsthemumu8585 and that makes sense. The one in Clone Wars didn't seem to hurt as they looked very calm and serene in the carbonite, whereas the one on Bespin looked painful as Han looked like it actually hurt a little during the process. Two different machines, yet both non-fatal.
I love how you said Luke jumped away from Vader because he trusted in the froce like it wouldn't let him die. I never thiught about that ! Everyone just says he'd rather die than join Vader, which I think is also true.
Yeah, I think it's a mix of both. It was a leap of faith, but it was also like "Well, if this doesn't work, I'd still rather be dead than with that guy!"
That is what ive allways thought too. I suppose they are both true. From a certain point of view
johan tölli you will find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view
i think he makes a choice...hes not afraid to fight back..he has no fear..he will resist no matter what cause the darkside is fa worse then death.....if he dies he dies...he expected to escape but he does not know if he will fall to his death..he would rather fall then join his father...some say the series jumped the shark with that line but at the time when he said that and luke jumping was probably so shocking...luke is so good he would rather die then join his dad as he just got revealed to him

This movie: "At least they aren't related in real life"
Once she watched ROTJ she needs to watch THAT edited scene with Han
It was priceless! 😂😂😂
Awakard as fuck
It could have been worse. It could have been Game of Thrones worse.
This film takes place a few years after A New Hope. As for Lukes training with Yoda, no one can say for sure how long it took. Some say weeks, others say a month but there's no actual confirmation to exactly how long.
I think we can assume he trained for at least two weeks. The falcon was without a functioning hyperdrive, and they stopped two separate times before heading to Bespin, which is a whole ‘nother long trip “it’s far but I think we can make it.” And the Falcon crew was on Bespin for at least a couple of days before they were captured, not to mention likely one or two more before Luke arrived (who had a working hyperdrive). It could’ve been longer than that (a month?) or it could’ve been shorter (only one week?) but who knows 🤷🏼♂️
ROTS has the same kind of storytelling. I know it’s confirmed to be anywhere from 5-9 days long but I always loved how the viewer could piece it together however they wanted

Same
Yoda completed Obi-Wan's training after the death of Qui-Gon, he also instructs all younglings at some point during their training as a jedi
Luke getting attacked was a way to explain the scars on his face, ones that he got in real life from a motorcycle accident, so they made that scene to give reason to that
Mark Hamill actually busted this myth in an interview. He said it was actually completely unrelated to his accident, which happened shortly before ANH reshoots, hence why he could not perform any reshoots. His face was healed by then. Besides, it’s perfectly plausible to say that Luke had seen some battles over three years, and is now older, and received scars during that time frame
Mark had the accident, but the scene was always there. It's pure coincidence, but still a neat story.
i like it..he has scars...he is all messed up by the end of the film...they fail time and time again
As to how long Luke was training with Yoda, keep in mind that the Millennium Falcon had to travel to Bespin without the use of hyperdrive (so sub-light engines only). While the movie never tells you exactly how much time has passed between scenes, it's a good guess that Luke was with Yoda for at least several weeks if not longer before leaving for Bespin himself.
You want to hear something really crazy? Empire predates the "Training Montage." That's why there is such a disconnect.
Yeah, I don't think it's unreasonable to assume Luke didn't learn flips and handstands and swinging on vines in the trees in a week - when he left Hoth he could just barely pull his lightsaber a couple of feet, yet we see him lifting several rocks, stacking them neatly on top of each other, and even lift R2 (which we know is pretty heavy), all before understanding that weight and mass makes no difference when using the Force ("only different in your mind")... A month of training seems an excessively conservative estimate of how long he spent training with Yoda.

"Laught it up fuzz ball" .. one of my all time favourite quotes :D love Han and Chewie
I loved how you not freaked out on “No, I am your father” because of your background knowledge, that did not exist at that time. After all it is the biggest twist in movie history and you were like “Yea, I know that, so what’s next?” Really funny and lovable to watch.
Keep on the good work, I really enjoy your videos and the chance to follow your Star Wars journey.
Haha xD thanks. Yeah I know it's a big deal to folks and I acknowledge that. It was a big media moment so even folks who didnt see the movie knew about it for the most part, ha!
the carbon freeze facility in the clone wars was well maintained while this was one meant for garbage so vader wanted to test it on han. so he can use it on luke

15:40 He wasn’t really trusting the force. He fell because he would rather die than join the dark side. He 100% thought that he was a goner when he fell. That part’s so powerful to me
Fun fact. While filming in Norway during the winter for all the snow parts, an actual snow storm hit forcing the cast and crew inside this house they were staying at. Deciding they needed to do something, George had Mark Hamill (Luke) get into costume, walk out into the storm, then filmed him walk back while everyone else stayed inside nice and warm with the camera set up in the doorway.

Yoda did teach Obi-Wan, but in the way he teaches all younglings, like that class we see in Attack of the Clones.
And yeah the human carbon freezing is a bit of a retcon. It was meant to be some weird punishment that's barely been used before. But then Anakin, Obi-Wan, Ahsoka, and a bunch of clones use it in The Clone Wars.
Regarding the carbon freezing, I think the reason the carbon freezing in Empire is seen as a potential danger is because the facility is crude and the one in Coruscant in the Clone Wars was not.
Probably wasn't*
I think she shows more emotion and surprise in this reaction video than any of her others. It shows what a great movie ESB was.

I never get tired of the 'Luke and Leia are brother and sister' freak out. Always hilarious.
I can imagine R2 thinking 'how did I ever get myself involved with you people?' as Yoda was goofing around with Luke. And was probably beeping 'Damn it Yoda! Stop messing around and give me the stupid thing!' as he tried wrestling the light thing from Yoda.
The Original Trilogy is so much fun to watch with you because you have so much prequel knowledge going into the movies that it helps elevate the story :)
This takes place 3 years after A New Hope. That's why Luke's as high ranking as he is and why the Alliance had established a functioning base on Hoth at this point.
That new Imperial ship is an Executor class dreadnought. More specifically, it is THE Executor. Vader's personal flagship.
Where as a normal Imperial star destroyer is 1600 meters, the Executor is 19'000 meters in length. So yea, "Unusually ginormous" as you said yourself. XD
Fun fact Jainormous is also my porn name. Get it, cuz my name is Jai? Lol

Fun fact: the guy who plays Wedge Antilles is Ewan McGregor's uncle in real life. He is one of the main reasons we got as good of an Obi Wan as we did in the prequels.
I thought that was the actor for Captain Anitilles.. the guy Vader chokes out in start of Ep IV
In terms of timeline, ESB takes place two years after ANH, so a lot has happened to our favourite farm boy, nerf-herder, princess, walking carpet and droid duet which is explored in comics and novella. The giant ship is a Super Star Destroyer, (SSD), the Executor, Flagship of Death Squadron, Vaders personal fleet. And the black sphere Vader sits in throughout the movie is a Meditation Chamber, where he can focus and enhance his power. It also acts as a life support pod, enabling him to breath without his helmet whilst he's inside
I'm really late for this, but I love your content a lot! I love your reactions to Rebels and Clone Wars. Keep up the great work!!!
Also, I really feel bad for Vader (even though he's technically a bad guy). He really felt worthless after his son rejected him. He had to feel like crap after that. First his wife saw him as a monster, then his own son jumped to what could have been his death to avoid him.
Great reaction...thanks for reminding me how great this one is 🤗

The Snowspeeder design is reminiscent of the tail-gunners seen on bombers during WW2, Y-Wings had them too.
Look up the Bearcat, and the Stuka.
Loved your reactions. You seem very genuine.
Ive been looking forward to this. So fun and great reactions as always :)
If im not mistaken i think its been 3 years since A New Hope. And Luke spends only about 2 weeks on Dagobah with Yoda.
During the 3 years since A new hope, Luke has been training solo (thats why he can pull the lightsaber out of the snow at the begining) so i would say he has about 3 years of very very basic force training, and then about 2 intense weeks of actual force/jedi training with Yoda.
He is wildly outmatched by Vader, but Its intresting to see also how Vader approaches this "fight". Vader toys with him the whole fight, testing how much Luke actually knows and how skilled he is and the second Vader gets hit and actually senses that Luke is a bit of a threat he stops playing and takes down Luke in 3 moves and cuts his hand off.
The whole final scenes from the moment Luke comes up through the elevator and sees Vader til the last shot of the fleet and the galaxy in the background is just amazing. The peak of Star wars in my opinon
It is an absolute treat seeing someone coming into this with a Clone Wars and Rebels knowledge. I am SO JEALOUS of being able to watch it like this
Seeing someone recognise Bossk in TESB from TCW and not the other way around is so frickin weird. It’s like opposite land on this channel lol. Like you know Bossk by name yet this is your 1st time watching Empire. Wild. I have sometimes wondered what it would be like for a first time viewer to literally watch the whole universe in timeline order so thank you for this haha
We had to wait 3 years for an answer on "no, I am your father."
Another great one!
Fun fact, General Veers is Grand Maester Pycelle from Game of Thrones. Also props to General Veers, he was the only one of the walkers able to destroy any of the snowspeeders with his blaster cannons, that's a hell of a shot.
When the Falcon jumps into hyperspace Vader reminiscent of how Anakin moved in Clone Wars when Cad Bane escaped.
It was 3 years between A New Hope and Empire, Luke learned a lot on his own. His training with Yoda was at least a few weeks. This is implied when movie switches back and forth between Luke/Yoda and Han/Leia story. Each new scene Luke's clothing gets more and more worn out, dirty and torn. The Millennium Falcon's hyperdrive is broke and travelling is much slower relying on a back up, so it took some time to travel between Hoth and Bespin. Keep in mind, light travel isn't instantaneous, but compressing everything in a 2 hours movie it seems that way.
I saw this as a kid in the 80's. You are seeing it now. Which says a lot.
You had it coming with the "at least it was on the cheek.." comment on the previous movie. :D
A lot of people don't realize when R2 got flung back and down into the maintenance pit that he bounced. Not only did he bounce but he bounced ON Chewie!
Notes:Some people said because Mark Hamill was in a car crash, the people in charge added in the scene where he was attacked by the wampa to account for the plastic surgery.
Hobby is the only other defector from Skystrike Academy with Wedge, leaving Wedge the last survivor now.
Yoda is pretty much fucking with Luke to test his patience and see if he's worthy to be trained.
Yoda taught all the Younglings, but back then, they probably simplified it to just Yoda training Obi Wan alone before Qui Gon was created.
Carbon freezing HAS been done before, but the chambers on Cloud City were used for dangerous material, not people(which is why it had to be tested first, unlike the ones they used for the Citadel mission in "Clone Wars").
Lobot(Landos assistant)has a cybernetic brain enhancement like Seebo, Ezra Bridgers Rodian friend from season 1 of Rebels. Productivity in exchange for personality.
Yoda is acting like a child at first to test Luke. He's testing his patience to see if he could actually train him.
You have to remember that the OG trilogy was the only fully-developed stories out of a 9-film *outline* that Lucas had back in 1977-1983. Qui-Gon Jin and the other prequel story contents didn't come until much, much later. So they've had to retcon a lot of stuff to make it fit the OG series but they didn't know what was going to come before or after yet.
The "I know" is perfect. Because there was never any doubt that Han loved Leia. His goal the entire movie was to get her to admit that she loved him too. So when she finally said it he replied with "I know". Perfect!
Bounty Droid = IG-88. When I was a kid and seeing these for the first time, the lore I learned behind IG-88 scared me more than Boba Fett's lore ever did.
Sorry, that's all of Bossk you'll see in the series. There's actually a very tiny Easter Egg in the scene when Chewbacca initially recovers C3PO scattered in pieces from the Ugnaughts on Cloud City. There's the remains of another bounty hunter in the background of that scene (not Bossk, don't worry).
IG-88 maybe?
That is indeed IG-88. He was tracking Boba Fett, but Boba caught wind of it and destroyed 88. Boba wanted the bounty all to himself. Can't blame him really.
@@nashvillan4lif Ohhhh so Boba killed IG? kewl I didn't know that
@@nashvillan4lif He killed one of the IG-88s. There are 12, I believe. I think Boba had killed a few of them at the time of this movie
Love your reaction videos 😆😁👍
Little known fact, the imperial officer that was escorting Leia away on cloud city was the same actor in the boba Fett suit
How odd! Interesting
GREAT reaction. Thank you
2:01. The main reason for the scene with wampa was because Mark Hamill was in a pretty bad car accident after filming Episode IV, and had some scars from it. They kept his face mostly covered for the first couple minutes of Episode V and wrote the wampa scene in in order to explain the slightly disfigured face.
This video was so amazing
Gaxelle: (about Lando and C3-PO): "Lando, you are not interested in the droid? Just kidding." It is very satisfying to see someone react to the old trilogy that has already seen first the Solo movie, and Episodes 7, 8, and 9 (plus the Clone War series)
Haha xD yeah that's good to hear it's interesting to folks :)
Yoda trains almost every jedi as younglings to a curtain age when they get their own master
The time gap in universe is the same as the time gap between the release of A New Hope and this movie, which is why Han and Leia's relationship is so developed and Luke has command experience. They've all been together in the Rebellion for 3 years at this point, not just a few months like you seem to think. Edit - Its also part of why Luke is able to pick up Yoda's training as quickly as he did (a span of a few weeks), because he had been practicing the bare bone basics he had learned from Obi-Wan on his own for 3 years by that point. Luke had trained as far as he could on his own and gotten stuck. With Yoda's techniques and an experienced teacher to point out where he'd been going wrong and correct the major flaw that had been holding him back - his mindset about the Force - Luke was able to make major progress very quickly.
I really think you should watch the "Most Terrifying lightsaber duel" by full fat video when you get the chance, it really paints the scene with Vader and the holo call with Palpatine in a different tone, you already picked up on it, well done Ms.Gaxelle.
40 years later, and I STILL get chills when Vader says, "The Force is with you, young Slywalker." The shot is SO iconic. I love Vader's sarcasm when he follows with, "......but you are not a Jedi yet." Just pure nerd gold!!!
it's actually been a couple years, our heroes bonded and worked up the ranks in the comics. also! this movie takes place over about a month at most, luke's training and the millenium falcon crew on the run lasts for weeks.
Your remark about Qui Gon reminds me of what the initial concept for the Clone Wars was. Originally, the books and expanded universe made it seem like the war had been about an evil army of clones trying to take over the galaxy. But then the prequels had the Clones fight along side the Jedi and they had to retcon some stuff.
As the Falcon was damaged it took Han and Leia a few weeks to get to Bespin..... it is therefore suggested Luke's training with Yoda in this movie took 2 or 3 weeks. According to Disney canon in books and comics, Luke did practice his lightsaber fighting between Episode IV and V and the Yoda training in Episode V was his formal training.... not his only training. When fighting Luke, as Vader knew Luke was his son he was not going all out to destroy Luke.....
"Are we going to see any force sensitivity from Leia?" We actually see just that at the end of this movie. Its how she hears Luke and knows where he is when they're flying away and he's hanging from that weathervane or w/e it is below the city.
All of the youngsters were students of Yoda before they were assigned to their respective masters, so Obi-Wan was once a student of Yoda before he became Quigon's student
