When you think of toy dogs you think tiny but that is not necessarily the case with Toy Australian Shepherds. Toy Australian shepherds are determined by height and not by weight. Males under 14" at the shoulder are toys and females under 13" inches at the shoulder are toys, so toys can weight upwards of twenty pounds. speaking of males and females we will discuss which makes a better pet. (Hint neither) When a male dog is neutered he loses his hormones because his testicles are removed and they produce testosterone. Dogs identify each other through scent. When the hormones are absent the dog is not recognized by scent as a male or female by other dogs. This ends "same sex" aggression brought on by hormones, although most behavior both good and bad is more a product of socialization, training and genetics. Although technically a male with chromosomes xy is still a male, it is not recognized by other dogs as such through scent, same as with females chromosomes xx female but after spay and removal of ovaries which produce the female hormones they are not recognized as female though scent by other dogs. I felt I had to clarify this because in the video I refer to neutered and spayed dogs as "it" and this seems to have caused some confusion. If a dog is xy it is male xx it is female and no surgery can change that, but other dogs do not recognize them as such so choosing by "sex" is not as critical when considering relationships between dogs in the home. I hate to see someone pass up the perfect puppy for their family simply because it is "the wrong sex" when the dog is going to be spayed or neutered and thereby unrecognizable by other dogs as any particular sex within weeks of being altered. Spaying and neutering ends the sex drive of dogs and with ending that drive a score of behavioral problems RELATED TO SEX are eliminated. I hope this clears up any confusion. I don't edit my videos. You can see I did this entirely in one take, no edits, so if my verbiage caused confusion I apologize, but since over 5000 people have watched it and only a couple of people had a gripe about it I think most people got what I was trying to say.
I just adopted a toy Aussie from a rescue. She was being used as a breeder, living in a barn. After a few days of living in a loving home, her personality is emerging. She is the sweetest, smartest little princess. I absolutely adore her.

This breeder's comments that they are no longer male or female once neutered is absolutely wrong. Males will retain a male spirit and the females will be more docile . You cannot refer to a neutered dog as an "IT" and in 45 years I've never seen that to be true.
I beg to differ. There are plenty of "spirited" spayed females and neutered males. The point and I know you know what the point was, is all hormones are lost, so they no longer have male or female hormones. Just as a male horse who is neutered is called a gelding, he loses all his male aggression and intractability so he can be ridden, it is the same for dogs. The dog is no longer a male or a female because the hormones that make it such are gone.
Not so. Hormones determine sex. Once a dog is neutered it loses its male sex hormones. Once spayed it loses its female hormones unless the ovaries are left. No sex hormones, it is now a sexless being. That is the facts. Thanks for your comment.

I didnt neuter my male dog… just can’t do that to my boy. Luckily I got my toy Aussie from a breeder who didn’t mind if I chose not to neuter him.

I have a toy Australian shepherd and she’s 20lbs 😅 she’s soooo energetic she was the biggest out of the bunch even though her parents were both under 17lbs 😊

Vet here… For some breeds, sex makes a difference. Regardless if you S/N them.

Could you please list those breeds where spaying and neutering "won't make a difference" so people can stop wasting their money on the vet? And at what age does that spaying or neutering cease to make a difference? Can you show me the study where this was determined? Show me the science, please. Everybody is entitled to their opinion. And it sounds like you are simply stating yours, which is fine! Try to sit in front of a camera that is rolling and do an unedited video it ain't easy. I always thought they maintain the personality traits even after being fixed. They are still different.
They lose their sex hormones, so they don't display characteristics/behaviors associated with sex hormones. Yes xx and xy no matter what you do. A male is always a male and a female is always a female but their sex hormones are taken away.
Spay and neuter should be done later after the dog's body has a chance to naturally mature. Spaying and neutering creates for some breeds real issues if it occurs before the body is fully matured. This is a matter of contention for many who insist or spay/neutering early vs those like myself (and several veterinarians) who know that it is best not to interfere with the natural hormonal balance of dogs as they mature. Given this, there are in some breeds notable differences between male and female in behavior and size.

Feel like the research is mixed. I had my border collie aussie mix spayed when she was 8 months old. She'll turn 10 this year and is in fantastic health. My dog prior to her was a miniature poodle, who I did not have neutered until he was almost a year old. He passed at 13 of prostate cancer. Maybe it had nothing to do with it at all, but sometimes I wonder if I had done it earlier maybe it would have helped. But I don't know really. Just worried I did something wrong I guess.

I have two male Aussie’s indoors, one is a mini and the other a toy, and neither one mark territory. You’d think they would bring that I also have three females indoors as well. I do have them go outside as well to get there play time. Aussies have a lot of energy and need to be able to burn it off. I love my fur babies, I’d love one of yours. I’m in Texas though and rarely travel so I guess I’m outta luck.

Yes, they sure have a lot of energy and I try to showcase that in my videos to help people understand what is involved in keeping an aussie happy! I have people how come from all over the country to get a puppy. We are 15 minutes from RDU international and your puppy can travel home right in the cabin of the plane with you. (-:
How does spaying/neutering a dog take away its gender? That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard
It stops production of sex hormones, ie testosterone in males, which drive a lot of behavior in in-tact dogs. Her point is that their behavior has very little to do with their sex after they are fixed.

Ask any vet. Once you take away hormones then the dog stops being one sex or another. Especially in the eyes of other dogs who recognize gender though scent (hormones in the urine and on the dog) so this takes same sex aggression off the table. Now this isn't to say that one dog can't dislike another dog for other reasons, but once you take the hormones away this stops dogs being triggered into aggression by sex hormones being present.

I like a female because I’ve had three male dogs in my dog journey in each of my male marks his spot everywhere he goes. Everyone of mine have done that and I don’t know how to stop it redirect afraid everything however, I find the males are much more lovable.
Females mark , too. They just can't lift their legs as high.
I always get male since I don't fix my dogs. Females will bleed if they aren't fixed. My males don't mark and aren't aggressive.
You do a good job with your training!
I get females only, its way easier to clean up puddles than sprays when potty trainin

Okay you are clearly delusional if you think that dogs are no longer males or females just because they get fixed. They don’t lose their gender 🤣 Also some people just prefer to have certain genders because of jobs they want the dog to do. Also some people just bond more with certain genders. I’m a dog trainer and personally I just don’t like female dogs. Too independent and stubborn. I have 3 dogs of my own. Two males and one female. My bond is so strong with my males. I love my female but like I said she is very stubborn and independent. Whereas my males are obsessed with me and are happy to work for me. Nothing wrong with wanting a certain gender.
Read the description. Yes, male is xy female is xx you are missing the point that dogs recognize each other through scent. take away sex hormones and you take away their sex to other dogs, but thanks for your sweet comment! Yes, some do want one gender or the other but again the POINT was to don't overlook the RIGHT puppy just because it is the "wrong" sex. You are going to take the sex hormones away by spaying or neutering. Period.
P.S. I would not want a dog trainer that did not like female dogs! Good grief. That is half of your clients, if you have any. I also would not want a dog trainer with a negative attitude and an confrontational attitude when they don't agree with something. Balance yourself before trying to work with another species or another of your own species.

We are hoping more breeders realize this is just mutilation for fashion to cut off those beautiful expressive tails.
@@dreamgaits yes! It helps them with balance too! It’s crazy ppl still do it just because some weirdos decided dogs looks better with over half their tail gone, it’s the standard in Europe and I’ll do whatever I can in the states to help stop it here, hopefully someday soon the AKC and government and everyone else will get with the times and stop the mutilation of these beautiful babies! Also love that you do spay/neuter contracts, so important, hope it becomes the norm for all animals soon. Thanks for all you do and I can’t tell you how glad I am to see ppl not practicing tail docking- it makes me so happy (and I’m sure the puppies can’t thank you enough)!

If both parents have large dogs in their background you can get a big puppy out of small parents and vice versa.

Also I am totally guilty of having gotten hung up on male/ female. I always grew up with male dogs and though the personality of female dogs might be so much different and didn’t want to risk it.
Yes, so many people think it is by weight, but weight can be an issue because a dog could be starved to meet a standard size or too fat to be a toy, etc so the official way is to measure. I am going to do a video on exactly how to measure. Also, some sexes just resonate with people and that is fine. But I hate it when someone over looks the right individual just because of sex.

my maltese was fixed and was still very territorial all his life. no matter what I tried. he wasn't around other dogs.
Males or females, spayed or unspayed or neutered or not can become territorial. "Fixing" isn't the answer to behavior problems, but can lessen some hormone related behaviors. Thanks for your comment!
Hello. Beautiful puppies! Greetings from Oregon. We love Aussies. We are getting one (large Toy) 2 months old locally in a few weeks. Any tips on crate training or potty breaks? How well do your puppies adjust during the first few nights and weeks? So many questions. Any advice is helpful. Thank you in advance.
Please watch my video on bringing your new puppy home it is called what not to do when you bring your new puppy home. There will be a big adjustment and you must be patient. Feed the same food as the breeder, rub the mom and littermates with a plush toy for your baby to sleep with. Try to duplicate what the breeder was doing before you bring your puppy home.

@@dreamgaits Hi, I'm from Brasil. There are some australian Shepherd breeders here. But I live on a apartment, I think would be sad to a big dog being so small space on the most of day hours. And also I have a free roam bunny, so I can't have a heavy dog playing with her. I was looking for a small breed that can also run with me everyday and It cant be a terrier because of high prey drive they have. I think Mini aussie is so cute and perfect for my life, but we dont have Mini aussie breeders here, unfortunately. :(

I contacted a breeder and asked if they did testing for hip issues and they told me that hip dysplasia is not an issue for aussiss. From what I've read that's not true. What are your thoughts?

Hi Kate, I would recommend that you take your little baby to a vet and let them assess her size and health. I can't see her and honestly I don't know what 1500 grams is in pounds, ounces.
I did some research looks like a little over three pounds. You are saying she is a teacup so how big are her parents? If she is only going to be six pounds then that is a different story. Still I urge you to get her checked out for her health and your peace of mind.
@@dreamgaits thank you so much🙏 if I’m right it’s 3,4 pounds. I showed her to the vet, she didn’t find any issues with health but yesterday night after vaccination she got scary spasms. I love this little baby with all my heart and don’t know where to ask because in France and in Europe toy Aussies are rare. I uploaded recently on my channel very short video with her. @@dreamgaits her parents for about 6-7 pounds and she is only one quite little baby for delivery. She is very calm and kind , not much emotional but with a good appetite and perfect digesting 🙈

If your dog is not having structural problems, knee problems, etc then there is nothing wrong with your dog! My dogs have a bit more bone than some due to having "show" dogs in my lines and the fact that I want to raise sturdy dogs that hold up to sports and work.

We just bought what we believed was a mini. She was 2.6 pounds at nine weeks when we bought her and now she is just breaking 4 pounds at 12 weeks. What is going on? She seems pretty healthy.
Sounds like you have a toy! Sweet! Did you see the parents? If not, be sure to have a vet check her out and make sure is is fine, just tiny. If she is four pounds at 12 weeks and is not skinny I am going to make a wild guess that she will be 12-15 pounds grown.
@@dreamgaits She was actually checked by a Vet or the morning of the day we brought her home, and then she saw the same vet a few days later and was diagnosed with Giardia so they gave her that anti-inflammatory antibiotics for five days and then Panacur for five days.
And because of the dewormer it actually ruined her appetite for those four or five days so she thinned out just a little bit but not horribly. She’s been off the medication a full day now so I’ve notice she’s starting to eat a little bit more. She’s going to get checked for a UTI tomorrow oh just to be on the safe side.
From what I was told the mom was 20 pounds and the dad was 17 either that or the mom was 20 inches at the shoulder and the dad was 17 inches at the shoulder the place I bought her at couldn’t give me a straight answer. I have the breeder information so I could probably just contact them.
Sorry for such a long response, oh but I’ve never had this breed before so I am in dire need of counseling.
@@soulprovider915 The parasite problem can slow their growth for awhile. Now that she has been treated she should catch up. If you did not get her direct from the breeder she was probably raised in a puppy mill and did not get off to a good start. Now that she is with you she should do better. Yes, get in direct contact with the breeder and get specific health and size info on the parents. Also pictures of the parents and proof of genetic health testing.
@@dreamgaits OK great thank you very very much. So are there actually specific toy breeze for Aussies or is it just a genetic variation in the mini that could affect one or two in the litter? I am supposed to get my official AKC papers from the breeder in about 8 to 10 weeks.
AKC does not recognize the toy but the toy is a real thing. Your baby will be registered as a mini in AKC.
I would get a male over female because my toy female has luxating patella and it's more common in female toy breeds. Wish I had known.
I did not know there was a sex link to it. That is news to me. Where did you get that information.
Agree with her about choosing a puppy based on their energy level, characteristics, and temperament- not their sex. Don't really agree with the "it" part. The dog is still male or female regardless of being spayed or neutered. The parts for actual reproduction to occur have been removed, but other sex identifying parts remain. You still have a male or female dog..
Hi Jen, Yes, but the sex drive is gone. So negative behaviors associated with sex are gone. No desire to reproduce, so that was the point if "it". You cant get rid of xx or xy and I state that in the description. Thanks so much for your comment!

One has a penis, the other the respective accompanying genitalia. I'm a woman, if I have a hysterectomy, am I an it ? Same sex animals tend to be more territorial with each other. My female cat does better with male dogs which is why we have a preference of sex.
It depends on the individuals. I have three intact male dogs and they love each other. They even groom each other. So it does depend on the situation for sure.
My females cats just LOVE our female dog:)

But males tend to mark their territory using furniture etc. This can occur even if house trained.
Not neutered males and all of my intact males would not think of doing it because if they are house trained regardless of sex they won't mark. BTW females mark, too. Thanks for your comment!

@@janwarriner6554 Just because yours are not housebroken properly doesn't mean you should generalize your experience to all male dogs. I have intact male dogs and I have dogs in and out all the time. My dogs would not dream of peeing in my house because there are consequences. Females and males scent mark, males do it higher but all dogs scent mark. It is a matter of proper house training.

Why is that awful? All responsible breeders do it on pups adopted as pets. It is standard procedure.

Yes it is standard and typical breeder protocol as set by the AKC. Be wary of anyone selling dogs and not doing this as it is irresponsible breeding practices. Kudos to @Dreamgaits for being responsible

It doesn’t change the sex of the dog to have it fixed. It simply stops testosterone on your males. They live longer and behave better. Same with females but it’s estrogen if I remember correctly and it vastly improves their health and lifespan and makes it so they never have female cancers like ovarian, uterine, or breast cancer. It’s not playing god any more than taking antibiotics or vitamin c when sick. It’s like getting your tonsils out. It’s the exact same dog you get back with the exact same personality except minus any aggression toward other animals and it prevents spraying and marking territory.
