Lila and Hershey taking the Cloud Rider Test #horse #gaitedhorse #horsetraining
Hershey is a "gaited" chocolate Rocky Mountain Mare available in Raleigh, NC. Her rider is a college student who has been home for the summer and has dedicated her summer to advancing her horsemanship while volunteering to help out with our horses. Our spend several months with us before being offered as available. They go through extensive ground work and under saddle work including time being ridden in arenas, both covered and uncovered, on trail and in open fields. They are also trained on an elaborate obstacle course. This is a video of Lila and Hershey taking their Cloud Rider evaluation. Credit goes to the rider but Hershey has been Lilas sole training partner in all of the lessons leading up to this evaluation. If you have a stiff, resistant, pacey, horse maybe this type of training will help you build the soft supple horse you have always wanted. The answer to having the horse of your dreams might be in your own barn! All of our horses were "thrown away" by owners who did not have the skills to train. Very few gaited horses get the training we provide. We offer this to our horses to secure their future and keep them out of auctions and feedlots for life. Then we match them to the right owner. I hope you enjoy this video.

Training dogs is simple when you understand how animals learn. Treat training is not a natural way for dogs to learn and in fact can erode the relationship between owner and dog. A treat trained dog is never really trained. It goes through life begging for food, begging in the form of behaviors such as sit, down, come, etc, etc. In this video I introduce how easy it is to train an adult dog wit...

      Yeah, pretty much most dogs LOL LOL For sure a lot of different breeds and sizes can be service dogs. Small dogs are easier to travel on a plane with for sure and you don't need a big dog for a lot of service needs such as allergen alerts, seizure alerts, etc, etc.

    Oh my goodness I HAD NO IDEA THAT IT WAS CALLED A REVERSE SNEEZE! I have three Pomeranians which are known to have trachea problems. One of my Poms gets these reverse sneezes all the time. And I usually massage his neck up underneath his chin and it usually fixes it. But the next time it happens I'm going to try the cover of the nose thing! Thank you so much for your post I just came across your channel and subscribed. You seem like such a wonderful dog trainer. This!!! My dog is traumatized though. So he lunges at most men to defend my mother and I when we are walking him. He has gotten a little better with age, but still fights me when I stop. I have to remind myself. It is HIS walk. Not MY walk lol.

    • @dreamgaits
      @dreamgaits Před 20 hodinami

      It takes a lot of patience and repetition. Refuse to move forward when the dog tightens the leash. Practice in the house, in your own yard a lot. Take the time you would "go for a walk" and train at home for a few weeks. Good luck.

    • @KarnBlueEarring
      @KarnBlueEarring Před 3 hodinami

      @@dreamgaits I have tried for 9 years. At this point I think I can safely say that this is just a quirk that my dog just happens to have. There's this 19th century rulebook about horsetraining that said: "If your horse is not behaving to your expectations, follow these steps to determine the cause for it: 1. Have I made a mistake? 2. Is the horse injured, in pain or sick? 3. Is there something within the immediate environment, that may disturb the horse? If all 3 do not apply then, and only then, you may assume that the fault lies with the horse itself." I find this a very interesting approach to training. It invites you to think ciritcally, and even after all else fails, to understand that an animal may just have a piece of personality.

    • @dreamgaits
      @dreamgaits Před 2 dny

      Hi Pamela, Most trainers on you tube are full time trainers and show in some sort of competition. They are totally disconnected to the typical dog owner who works outside the home, has kids to shuttle to this and that, etc. Their dogs live all day in a cage and get out for training for competition or to make a youtube video then back in the cage. They really dont have a clue how to live with dogs in a normal every day fashion. Sounds like you are doing a fantastic job with your little MAS. Just as an aside, it has been broiling hot here in NC so I swim my dogs. If you have that opportunity give it a go! I take mine to my pond or a local lake. They love it and we all have fun.

    • @dreamgaits
      @dreamgaits Před 2 dny

      Hi Cade, Your puppy is too young for intensive training. If you started at six weeks with food training you need to stick with that for awhile because it sounds like she gets confused and frightened and then shuts down. I don't know what kind of collar or harness you are using but I think you are putting too much demand on this puppy way too young. Train her as much as you can off leash with your treats. Get her to come to you and follow and sit. Add the leash and collar or harness NOT a slip lead at this age unless you are converting it to a slip lead harness and practice the come, follow and sit with your treats. Do not take the puppy for walks. Keep her home and just let her drag the leash as you treat train come, follow, sit. Play with and bond with her and go easy on the training until she is 12-16 weeks old. Then you can introduce the pressure to her slowly. This dog sounds emotionally and mentally too young for what you are trying to accomplish. Slow down and enjoy these baby puppy days.

    We got our first toy aussie a year and a half ago. She's a doll BUT she loses her mind over anything with wheels (bikes, cars, the vacuum, etc.). She leaps and barks like crazy and you can't do anything to snap her out of it; finally, a dog trainer found us a small prong collar, and that has been a game changer because it gets her attention. We just had an hour long walk and she only lost control for one weird scooter that rolled by. As she gets older, and now that we have the prong collar to help us when she gets fixated, she is learning to walk well on the leash regardless of what rolls by. As for energy, she's a nut lol. We walk her for least an hour a day at the off leash dog park, with a lot of fetch and running the whole way. Rain or shine, this dog needs to get out! We also play fetch inside in the evenings, and we have the horsewhip toy you showed in one of your earlier videos; horsewhip is her favourite game and hubby plays with her for at least half an hour a day. We have also done hearding training and work with her several nights a week. All that to say, we have still had some issues with carpet chewing (that was a new one to me 😬), but on the whole, she is becoming a lovely, obedient, and sweet dog and people ask us about her all the time. When they say they want one, I always say, lots of dog in a little package. You need to be ready!

    This was a big lightbulb moment for us. The way it was explained to us is puppies have 4 needs; play, chewing, exercise and training. They are all important and all distinct. Neglecting any of them for long will result in undesired behaviors.

      @dreamgaits Před 2 dny

    It would be very interesting to see some progress on untrained dog, epsecially with some occured problem and how your dealing with overcome them, bery interesting approach, everywhere i see snack reinforcement, which sounds exhausting. I have only cats and learn one of them few tricks with that approach, but cant imagine having dog to use that on daily basis everywhere i go 😮‍💨

    This makes so much sense. I realize that I have been giving my 7 month old Aussie way too much freedom. She loves people and other dogs. The problem is she jumps on her hind legs and moves her front paws like a circus dog to get to everyone she sees. It makes it so hard to manage her when people come to our house or going anywhere in public I have tried putting a house line on her even as a small puppy and she chews through it pretty quickly. She also will chew through a harness while sitting at your feet if you take your eyes off of her. I’m excited to try the flip lead and stepping on the leash to stop the jumping, but do worry about being able to stop her from chewing on the leash.

    • @dreamgaits
      @dreamgaits Před 5 dny

      Hi Rebecca, At seven months old put a regular flat collar on her and attach your house line/leash. You have to correct the chewing! She has no idea it is wrong without making it uncomfortable for her to do it. She is old enough to correct. I would quickly pull it out her mouth in a rude way and "HEY' or "AH AH" However provide her something appropriate to chew instead. I use real bully sticks with no problems. Make sure she is getting plenty of exercise and interactive play. She sounds like she is bored and/or has excess energy. You can train using the slip or slip harness but when she is just around the house you can just use a regular collar and lead.

    I am a novice dog trainer and appreciate your videos - thank you. They make much more sense than the other youtube videos that I have seen. I have had a jack russell for a couple of years who is mostly a good boy (a bad and sometimes inconsistent trainer - me). Very social, and rather lonely after his companion (an Australian Magpie) died a few weeks ago . So we adopted what we thought was a kelpie/jack russell from a dog shelter - he had been found roaming the streets - but I think turns out to be a kelpie/boxer about 9 months old - my own assessment. Lovely dog but needs training - especially around impulse control and walking loose on lead - he's pulling and not focused on me at all. I'm going to try this method (in your teach your distracted reactive dog to focus and heel) to help him understand heel and loose leash. I feel that he really is too big to go on a table - 19 kilos and about 25 inches high but I might get my father to knock up a box for the purpose to give him a defined space to stay on, to teach him good sit, down and stand. And I will take your advice not to take him out walking until he has these skills under his belt as I feel like I am only reinforcing bad behaviours at present as he is highly stimulated by other dogs and wanting to smell everything swinging around on his leash etc and the more I correct him, the more recalcitrant he gets. Do you have any specific advice or have I picked up the gist of your training? Thank you in advance from Australia.

      I would encourage you to watch the four recent videos I posted on Practical Dog Training part 1-4. You are so right to keep this dog home and train and bond with him. You have no clue what kind of past he had or if he had any training or if any of the training was good so you need to break it down and start all over like he was a little puppy. At nine months he is still a puppy for sure, just a big one! The box or raised bed is a great idea for sure. If he is truly boxer/kelpie he needs tons of exercise! Be sure to give your other dog who just lost a best friend a lot of extra attention. He lost his bestie and now your attention is split and really more towards the new dog, so make sure your other dog is involved in training and gets tons of xoxoxo.

    I just found your videos…finally someone that makes sense!! I have a 1 yr old Queensland/border collie mix named Ruby, and I am training her to be my service dog (I’m Deaf). She was not a rescue. We live in an apt, and I am in my 60’s. She gets plenty of exercise as there are grassy fields around the apt as well as a fenced dog park attached to the apts. I did the “name and recall” as in the video, and she was stellar. In the house. Both standing and sitting. I took her outside using the slip harness (brilliant idea!!) and brought along the 30’ lead. When we got to the grassy area I attached the long lead and tried to do as you did in the video. She forgot her name. She forgot any semblance of recall. I had to literally “reel her in.” What I finally ended up doing, because I wanted it to end on a positive note, I let her get about 8’ from me, then say her name…she would then come and sit, and I gave her a treat or pets (at random). After 5 wins in succession, I took her over to the dog park (few people use it so we were alone) and let her sniff around. She is really nose-driven. I took off all the stuff and just “let her be.” Did I do it right? Should I start out with a shorter lead? I have both a 10’ and a 15’ leash. Should I have taken her to the dog park first and get the sniffing more out of her system? I do always play a rousing game of fetch and/or tug to get some of the excess energy out before trying to train her. I hope I included all the info you need…again, so many thanks for your common sense, so refreshing after being told this, that and the other, from other trainers on CZcams , all of which was contradictory, and of which none really worked.

      Hi Victoria, Thank you for your comment. She did not forget her name. She doesn't know the full meaning of it yet. Yes, perfect in the house because you were TRAINING the name and it will take several weeks of practice in a variety of locations (thats what the long line is for) before she will really understand. Instead of a long line I would use a belted flexi because you can give her a little "pop" even if she is way out on it. Name, wait a beat if she doesn't respond, give it a little pop and she will come. Reward with praise, pets, try to not use treats when on the line if possible. Dogs don't generalize very well, meaning as soon as you change locations you sort of have to "retrain" and your dog doesn't understand name, come or just name if you want the name to mean come. Practice in the house, go out and practice, then let her off to run. That's what I would do, but don't call her when she is loose because she can ignore it. Do whatever it takes to get her back, ball, whatever and then leash her until you know she will come off leash and that might take weeks of practice. I will do a video on this for you if it ever stops raining. Hurricane Debby is here.

    Very nice 👍🏻 Hendo doesn’t go out without me . He is waiting until I say you can go out . But I want him to tell me if someone is at the door (I don’t feel safe if I am home alone) I will practice with him and barking if the doorbell rings. Sometimes we have music on and don’t hear it or I am downstairs in my son’s apartment and then I don’t hear the doorbell but I can hear him barking and go up . So it’s on and off for what I want 😂 But we have a door like your front door between our hall and our front door . he can see what is happening through the window 😂So he can’t just run out of someone open the front door. Sorry my English is not so good 😂 We live at the country and it’s only family that comes by . I know if friends are coming over 😂🎉 Enjoy the day See you around CZcams streets Hugs and love 💝 Ps I don’t have a stick but I just stand infront of him so he has to back out. I use my energy and point where he must go .

      You do bring up a very good point! Barking to announce a visitor that you are not aware of is a valuable service dogs provide to us. So appropriate barking would be fine to me if my dog would stop when I tell it. I can tell by all of Hendo's fun videos that he is very very bonded to you and very well trained.

      OMG I bet Jax is a cutie! You are so wise to do your training at home first and then go back to very short successful walks. Remember, it takes two to pull, so if you take one step in the direction the dog is pulling the dog is being rewarded for pulling. Good luck with Jax and thanks for the comment.

      Hi Marina, That works for dogs because you can blow the dog dry with a high powered dryer, but if I wet this mess and wait for it to dry to shed her out I would be waiting until the cows come home and that would be a long time because I don't have cows.

    Great information! Question would this method also work for fence jumping? Heard you say gate. New 8 yr old boy has jumped the 5.5 foot fence twice and I set up boundary flags & we raised the fence. But I still need to work on leaving it. This seems easier. Loved Storms joke.

    • @dreamgaits
      @dreamgaits Před 8 dny

      Wow! You did watch to the end. Thanks so much. I don't think it will stop fence jumping but you can install electric dog wire on top if he is jumping and catching the top and then going over. Dog electric has a low shock and a pulse so it won't fry birds that land on your fence. He will only go over it once if he hits that shock wire.
