  • This is part 1 of a two part series showing how to dissemble a 2002 Ford Ranger 2.3L to get to fuel injectors (including information about how to replace the O rings on them and reinstall) or to replace intake manifold gasket, and how to plug the plug hole in the intake manifold that can pop out and cause a mysterious vacuum leak. If you have a leak that you can't identify where it's coming from, but it seems like it's around cylinder 1, this may be your issue. Part 2 can be found here ( • Mystery Vacuum Leak SO... ) and involves putting it all back together.
Special thanks to "Tanker3278" on the Ranger Forum. Once I figured out what was causing the vacuum, I found this thread (www.ranger-forums.com/dohc-2-...) and used Tanker's idea for the brass plug, as opposed to other fixes they tried that were not successful in the long term. Also, I say "doohickey" a lot. If you'd like the actual names of parts involved in this video, check out the thread, with pictures and accurate names.

Thank you, that saved me a few days!! I did figure out if you pull the power steering out of the way and just loosen up the 5 intake bolts it lets you pull it out just enough to thread in that plug.. As an added measure I also JB welded a nut behind it so there is no way it can ever back out again... Also if anyone else thinks this could be their issue, shine a light down there I could see my plug, took a lot of guess work out.

Rath, Thanks for the information! Question for you, would it work if I took a big dollop of JB Weld and filled the hole with it... And gave it a day to cure? Trying to avoid pulling the intake. Thanks in advance!

@@billyg8360 It might but like I said you just have to loosen the intake, not remove it. JB weld holds to plastic ok but I wouldn't be surprised if it failed later down the road.. a threaded plug is a better fix

Just a tip: Be extra careful not to cross-thread the bolts that go into the plastic intake manifold. I cross threaded one and made things way more difficult for me.

Extremely helpful video! Thank you so much for doing this. I have the same problem. Shop offered to fix it for $600 (new intake manifold and labor). I'm going to do it for free with your help. Thanks again

Great video. I have the same year and engine for my Ranger. My problem is a loose red vacuum line the comes from the back of the intake manifold. On your video I can where if goes off to the driver side along the firewall. Any chance you could tell me where it leads to?

Do you know where the air intake temperature sensor goes? I have the same truck.

Does the Intake manifold suck air thru driver side ? Like does it have a small vacuum hose like tip that sucks air?

    • @kairu_aname

      5:52
That the one you're talking about?
That vacuum port goes to a vacuum hose, and then to the imrc solenoid.
You may have to brighten up the video to see it. It's the little device on the side of the intake that takes an 8mm to take off.
Should be about 6:52 to see where that device is.

Look at the trouble codes that the computer gives you.
Trouble codes give you a place to start looking for the problem, they aren't usually the problem themselves.
If you're unsure of if you have a vacuum leak, and just don't want to look at the codes, get it smoke tested.

Should be the EGR intake pipe.
      I'm pretty sure.
