  • Guest, Dr. Perry Nickelston shares his journey from chiropractic, to illness, to addressing the immune system to recover from autoimmunity via the lymphatic system. He looks beyond the musculoskeletal system into the whole body as a whole system.
"No system in the body ever works alone. They never get injured alone. They never heal alone. There's no such thing as an isolated injury in the body. There's no such thing as isolated healing. It's all or nothing until lights out. What that means is everything matters. When it comes to healing recovery from pain and inflammation."
Perry Nickelston, DC aka ‘The Lymph Doc’ is a Chiropractic Physician with a primary focus on treating chronic pain and inflammation via the lymphatic and vascular systems. Owner of Stop Chasing Pain, LLC. International speaker and educator of the self-care MOJO series. Summary:
Dr. Perry Nickelston discusses the importance of the lymphatic system in treating chronic pain and inflammation. He shares his personal journey of discovering the lymphatic system and how it transformed his approach to healthcare. Dr. Nickelston introduces the concept of the Big Six, a series of self-care techniques to stimulate lymphatic flow and improve overall health. He emphasizes the order and technique of the Big Six and explains why it is important to clear the lymphatic system before treating specific body parts. Dr. Nickelston also provides resources for further understanding the lymphatic system. In this conversation, Dr. Perry discusses the importance of understanding the body's ecosystem and the interconnectedness of various systems. He emphasizes the significance of drainage preceding supply and explains how the lymphatic system plays a crucial role in overall health. Dr. Perry also delves into the importance of tongue placement and its impact on the body. Additionally, he explores the glymphatic system and its connection to brain health. The conversation concludes with a discussion on the big six and addressing personal health concerns.
    Takeaways:
Understanding the body's ecosystem and the interconnectedness of various systems is crucial for overall health.
Drainage precedes supply, meaning that clearing waste and promoting fluid flow is essential before focusing on nutrition and supplements.
Tongue placement at the roof of the mouth is important for proper posture, blood flow, and lymphatic flow.
The glymphatic system plays a vital role in brain health, and its function is closely linked to the lymphatic system.
Addressing personal health concerns requires focusing on the big six and understanding the underlying causes of inflammation.

The body IS one piece. Exactly what I keep saying. People say things like, "Oh maybe THAT'S your problem," when I describe how one AREA or another in my body is doing better, as I work at things on the whole. (Lymphatic work, etc..)

I have to give AI the credit for the "takeaways." They are standard now with the podcast recording program that I use (Riverside). I did not love that task anyway so I happily gave away this job to AI.

Oh my goodness. Today is my first time watching this video but I had an epiphany last week about all of this in regards to the extreme amount and range of symptoms I've been having for four years that the diagnoses didn't fully explain that the doctors told me and they were completely unable to answer my questions. I realized the same thing you did!! I have been driving my friend crazy talking about this nonstop and not only how important the underrated lymph system is and how much of chronic conditions can be attributed to it. I told him it must be from when we tense our muscles under chronic stress and don't relax them, since our lymph system doesnt have a heart to pump the fluid so it relies on the contractions and decontractions (not sure if this is correct terminology) to pump the lymph fluid😊and if we never stop tensing, its going to cause a dam. I also theorized that these "dams" cause the fluid buildup that then puts growing pressure on the cardiac system from swelling causing blood pressure to rise. When someone has problems with their heart, one of the largest symptoms that indicate this is swelling in the lower extremities, particularly calves and ankles, and/or the "apple" body figure with swelling in the abdomen.
I am only about a quarter into your video and I wouldn't be surprised at all if you cover some of these relationships between body systems but before I go back to this phenomenal video, I have numerous theories about lymph nodes and various connections. I have no formal training outside of pondering, theorizing, researching, and suffering a cascade of collective symptoms for 3 and a half years ranging from constant internal bleeding and passing of blood 12-15 times a day, intermittent extreme bouts of swelling that caused my face to look like an absolute monster for a few days, another time temporary deafness from pressure not in the ear canal, swelling with enough fluid that when it went down my weight would fluctuate up to 25-30 lbs over the course of a couple days. I developed Raynaud's that has nothing to do with the temperature outside, I would get sudden stabbing pain that had me begging God to stop hurting me that I could pinpoint dime-size areas that were enlarged lymph nodes on CT scans and MRIs. I also have swollen lymph nodes that don't hurt like it was pressing right on a nerve but they will put noticeable pressure internally that wouldn't be correctly described as pain but is still extremely uncomfortable. There are so, so, so many other symptoms like intermittent bloody noses including in the middle of the night while I was sleeping, woke up to virtually drowning in blood. Night sweats and excessive day sweating are the newest symptoms.
I have been literally begging my doctors office to please test one of the enlarged lymph nodes that have been steadily growing on every scan.
Although, I have been getting regular iron transfusions to make up the iron lost from the chronic blood loss, my MCH, MCV, MCHC continue to remain abnormally low while the rest of my CBC work up will show up as normal for a couple months after the iron infusion but those three never normalize.
My Globulin is high while my
    Theories I have:
What causes Restless Leg Syndrome is pretty much still unknown right?? Doesn't it make sense that it could be a lymphatic system issue directly caused by restriction of the lymph vessel narrowing and its our body's way of trying to forcibly correct the flow by using irresistible movement when laying or sitting down that is relieved by standing up usually with walking or moving of some kind??

Also, the bloody bowel movements are extremely strange because they don't mix with water but sink. I was trying to figure out what bodily fluid would be heavier than water for the last month or so and couldn't figure it out in any way that made sense. When I had the epiphany moment last week after looking up "would an enlarged lymph node cause abdominal swelling", looked up all about the lymphatic system, asked the ARNP about who would do lymphatic drainage massage (believing this should in theory help the abdominal swelling as no amount of exercise or barely being able to eat had budged the scale from 197 for 6 months and not under 195 for 4 years despite walking 60 miles in the month of April with a lot of luggage after losing our home and then having our car stolen out of a tow yard after it was towed for still being parked in what had temporarily become metro only for a few hours during the afternoon unbeknowst to me while i was at an emergency dr appt.
The ARNP didn't know who would do lymph node draining massage, so I was researching who would be trained in that regards (Physical therapists are likely to have a general training of it and lymphologists that deal with lymphoedema but are a pain to get referred into) and then watched some videos on PT that specialized in that kind of massage so I could what would differentiate the techniques used versus standard massage and looked into specifically abdominal swelling and lymph node draining massage. After a couple hours of studying that, I wondered if we can manually do it to ourselves without needing another person and, after watching a half dozen videos on techniques for that vary thing... I started deep diving more into the lymphatic system, listening to many many lectures teaching about anything and everything to do with it. It came to me that the only constant during this so called never ending unexplained flare up of daily chronic blood loss that steroids have done nothing to stop... Has been growing enlarged lymph nodes along the digestive tract that have not gone down and various other lymph nodes that intermittently enlarge throughout any given month. I looked up in lymph fluid heavier than water .. and it is. It is the only bodily fluid heavier than water that would sink while being completely fluid with just blood, blood clots, and something that has a consistently of oil (staying separate from the water but sinking under it just the same). Mucus, liquid fat, etc would float. None of this does.
      Another Theory
I learned a lot about body shapers after thinking about the use of compression socks and how swelling can be controlled to a point using them.... I wondered if they had something similar for abdominal swelling and found the world of spandex shapers for medicinal purposes. The compression helping the lymph fluid move simulating muscle that would be "tensing" tighter and relaxing in a pumping cycle that moves the fluid. Just like contracting our abdominal walls to do crunches because if you don't, you risk actually looking fatter than thinner the more you work out doing sit ups and crunches without pulling those ab muscles tight first.
      Anyways my theory
Apple shaped body types would especially be in regards to this theory, when the stomach is disproportionately larger on the body without excess fat on the face or chin that should be there to match it if the size was due to fat accumulation alone. When we don't "hold our bellies in", wear loose fitting clothing and overall avoid touching our belly because we wish it was smaller, we are causing a cycle of lymphatic systems unable to pump itself effectively.
The 80s were all about the spandex, right?? Autoimmune disorders, diseases of the bowel especially cancers, BMI, etc etc have all risen sharply in the past decades with thousands of theories behind why.... What if it's as simple as we quit wearing spandex and don't suck in our bellies so that the contracting and relaxing can pump our lymph fluid so it doesn't overflow??
I have done self lymphatic draining massage 3 times since May 24th when I was weighed at 197. On June 23rd, after having been made to promise to go to the ER for blood tests after that middle of the night bloody nose on top of the usual blood loss.... I weighed 185 lbs, the smallest I have been in 3 years... My eucinophils, for the first time in 4 years was not significantly high (I just realized this second that there could be a correlation there because I have had dozens of CBC lab work and this is the very first time my eosinophils came back in the normal range and the self massage was the absolute only thing I have done differently.
I have been begging and begging my medical team to test my enlarged lymph nodes to be sure it's not lymphoma and keep just getting shrugged off and passed to various ARNPs they are apparently unable to order that lab work.
I made a huge case a few days ago, citing my sources I used as research, all from the archives and articles of National Library of Medicine. That is as reputable a source online as any.
I have many many other hypotheses as well that I would absolutely love to further investigate to see if I can disprove them based on facts and not assumptions or opinions.
The medical staff are almost all students or newly graduated and the case I am making to try and rule out lymphoma have fallen on completely deaf ears and a stereotype that I'm a stupid blonde who probably just hit up webmd and randomly picked a condition.
(I didn't). My blood pressure, specially the diastolic pressure keeps steadily rising despite medication, it sits at 133. I now have damage to my heart that is indicated in the findings on the 3 EKGs I have had in the last few months during ER visits that the walk-in clinic would have me go to instead.
I just want them to biopsy one of the lymph nodes that has grown to alarming sizes and they will not just order the test, they keep having me just come in to the office to talk to ARNPs who aren't even familiar with my file and ask me what brings me in and what symptoms. By the time I'm done with everything from my hair falling out, to the random body part swelling up like a balloon and then deflating without an obvious cause (I'm wondering if itching it so often a symptom because the act of scratching could, in theory, act like a plunger that doesn't really fix the flow but as least kind of moves it around so it doesn't completely just continuously overflow everything.) to explaining how much blood I am really losing daily, even bringing a sample to show it is just blood that fills what is usually used for urine samples hoping the seriousness of my symptoms will finally lead to diagnostic testing and less endless guessing, assumptions, trial, and error.
Thank god I had a terrible instant reaction the infliximab infusion they were trying to give me based on those assumptions. If my theory is right, that had a strong possibility of causing nothing good in terms of prognosis and disease progression.
I want to be wrong, I keep telling them to just please rule out the possibility because I have been trying very very hard to do just that... And I haven't been able to do anything but solidify my growing suspicion that lymphoma is a strong possibility. Especially with new drenching night sweats and cold sweat during the day.
I wasn't trying to step on anyone's toes, I'm trying to stop from dying before I'm 40 or at the very least, not feel like I'm in labor pain throughout any given day. I want to see my little girls grow up, they are 8 and 12
But like I told Kasey, the ARNP, in another message on mychart prior to this revelation and because of the newest bout of added symptoms that my body wont let me ignore.... I can feel it in every fiber of my being, a loss of hope that I will have the diagnostic testing done in time before whatever this is kills my body. No matter how much I have trained myself to ignore as my new baseline continues to be raised higher and higher with each new medical staff I keep being brushed off to, damage is still being done to my body. Just because I'm blocking out the pain to the best of my psychological abilities doesn't mean that the damage it was warning me about isn't still being done.
I cry every time I send them a message advocating for my life and begging them to please help me. Complete with logs, pictures, etc hoping they understand fully the seriousness of the situation this time. July 2nd is my last attempt, though, because not ordering a diagnostic test that is commonly done solely because I asked directly about it before it was suggested by them.... Is a stupid reason for a late diagnosis with a drastically declining prognosis with that delay.
I have never wanted to be wrong more in my life, but if I'm not .. then they are serving me with a death sentence based on their feelings and pride.
