  • This is a quick video I made about how to condition a new butcher block using mineral oils. I read a lot about mineral oils vs more organic oils like coconut oil and found that organic oils can actually go rancid after a while so that's why it's better to go with food grade mineral oils. For this video specifically I used the Howard BBC012 Butcher Block Conditioner 12-Ounce from Amazon. It had great reviews and looks fantastic.

    Couple of tips:
    1. Throw the bottle in the microwave for 3 minutes to warm up.
    2. Use the product generously and leave a heavy coat and recoat until a sheen is left. At that point you can be comfortable that the would is saturated.
    3. Expect 5 coats for an initial saturation.
In this video, he used far too little material. There’s no such thing as too much oil and excess can be wiped away.

I just did butcher block countertop. It took 3 coats of the howard mineral oil let it soak in for 1-2 hours for each coat. 3rd coat will be sitting overnight then wipe excess off. Then tomrrow I will be doing at least 1-2 coats of the conditioner to seal it good. Some don't do underneath but I don't want take chance did the back too. Going see what 1 coat looks like if needs a 2nd coat probably do that. I used a old plastic chopping board to spread the oil. Thanks for the tip about microwaving the bottle. I was trying to figure out how to get it out since looks super thick.

Home Depot- they have it in the paint section. Also- don’t spend that much money on the mineral oil. Go to Walmart- in the laxative section. Spend $2 instead of $9 for the same amount of vitamin E fortified mineral oil. Also- you also want to go WITH the grain. If it’s a thick butcher block, let it sit for an hour- and do the application & soaking in process 3 to 4 times. Once dry- THEN buff.....if you’re just starting, let it soak and buff it after your final application.

What's the best way to buff it? High grit sandpaper?

@@garrettjones8017 A clean lint free cloth or lint free paper towel will do the trick.

New wood or untreated wood??? Should have done like 3-4 coats of mineral oil first. Then 2-3 coats of conditioner.

I could be wrong but I thought the feed n wax is NOT food grade

You could use the Howard butcher block conditioning product! I personally use occasionally Howard feed wax with orange oil and haven’t died yet! But I am conservative! 🇺🇸
